ACR 4.4.1 opening 8-bit TIFFs as 16-bit TIFFs

I have a number of 8-bit sRGB TIFFs produced from scans of 35mm colour slides by the Epson Perfection 4990 Photo scanner. Am using Win XP Pro SP3.
If I open these images from Bridge 2.1.1.9 directly in Ps CS3 10.0.1 they are correctly shown in File Info and at the top of the Ps file view window as being 8-bit sRGB TIFFs.
However, if I open these from Bridge into ACR 4.4.1 (using either CTRL+R or File/Open in Camera Raw) they are shown (in the blue text at the bottom of the view window) as being 16-bit sRGB TIFFs.
Further, if, whilst in ACR, I choose Open Image to open any one of these images in Ps, Ps then says that the image is 16-bit - that is, it now agrees with ACR. If I then save the image as a TIFF (whether or not any adjustments were made in ACR), Ps saves it as 16-bit which nearly trebles the file size (18 to 47 MB).
Anyone have any idea as to why this might be happening?

Andrew,
You are severely confused.
>Seems like ACR should be able to tell the bit depth of a file
RAW files are neither 8-bit nor 16-bit by themselves. It is the conversion in ACR that produces a non-raw (cooked) file in whatever bit depth you define in ACR.
>and the image is then opened in Ps from ACR, and you then choose immediately to close the image without making any edits in Ps, Ps still asks you if you want to save the changes to the document be
The instant you click on Open in the ACR dialog box, a brand new image is
created in RAM with whatever parameters you define in ACR. You no longer are looking at your raw image {or TIFF] but at a converted image that exists only in RAM. If you do not save it, that image is lost forever --meaning that you need to go back and open the raw image {or TIFF] in ACR all over again.
You need to do your homework, Andrew. Read the white papers linked in the FAQs of this forum to understand what a raw image is (essentially a very, very dark linear grayscale image) and read Jeff Schewe's book on ACR to learn how to use it.

  • How can I set ACR 5.2 to open RAW files as 16 Bit and not 8?

Whenever I open RAW files in ACR 5.2 they open as 8 bit. I change the bit depth to 16 and work on a file... but when I open my next RAW file it's back to 8.
Is there any way to set ACR so that it always opens my RAW files as 16 Bit.. and saves other settings as well?

Bennett, when you open a raw file in Camera Raw and finish working on it the choices to click on are Open Image, Cancel, and Done. Which one are you clicking on to close the image in ACR? Cancel will do just that. Cancel the changes and the 16/8 bit setting will not be kept. The other two choices (Open Image and Done) will maintain the changes you made and the 16/8 bit setting and the color space should stick for the next image.

  • How to get Bridge-hosted ACR to always open 32-bit PS?

I am using CS4 on the 64-bit version of Windows 7.  Does anyone know how I can force ACR to use the 32-bit version of PS instead of the 64-bit version when using the "Open in Camera Raw" method from Bridge?
I have made file association and registry changes so that everything else (double-click a CR2 file in Bridge, using Open, etc.) uses 32-bit PS.  When I use the ACR hosted by Bridge via the "Open in Camera Raw", however, and then do an "Open Image", ACR will always use the 64-bit version of PS unless the 32-bit version of PS is already open.
I am trying to form a new habit of using the PS-hosted version of ACR with the "Open" command but it is a hard habit to break.  It also takes a little longer the first time I use ACR.  I´d love to use 64-bit all the time but I have third-party filters that work only on the 32-bit version.
    Any ideas?

Plain advice: open Bridge, open 32-bit PS,
and when we then open a file in/from Bridge it goes (via ACR) into 32-bit PS.

  • Opening 16-bit TIFF in LabVIEW Pro

16-bit images are captured from a PerkinElmer digital panel in an x-ray system. LabVIEW will not open these saved TIFF images directly. If images are first opened using ImageJ and then re-saved as a TIFF image LabVIEW can then open them. The images however have the same file size but are slightly modified at the high intensity values which currently are not an issue.
How can these TIFF images be opened without having to go through this second step; has anyone written LabVIEW software to take images directly from the panel - free or for purchase as a vi for use in a larger program?

Would it be possible to post one these images.  I have tried to duplicate the issue using a stock Tiff image, but I cannot get the error you are reporting.  I would check and make sure that all of your image types match up, such as in IMAQ Create and IMAQ ImageToArray.  If you are reserving a memory location for an image other than 16 Bit, then that could cause an error.  Also, if you don't have the correct indicator wired to the output of the IMAQ ImageToArray VI, that could cause an error too.  It sounds like the error is occuring at IMAQ ReadFile though.  Are you using the default file options, or are you setting them through a control or constant?  If so, what inputs are you changing?  If the inputs don't match up, that could lead to an error also.

It would be nice to be able in choosing wether to open jpeg and tiff in ACR using right mouse click menu. AFAIK now you only can set preferences to open these files always in ACR or never.

  • Even though I have checked "Automatically open all supported TIFF's" in Camera RAw Preferences - My tiff files do not open up in camera RAW

Even though I have checked "Automatically open all supported TIFF's" in Camera RAw Preferences - My tiff files do not open up in camera RAW - PS 6

Sorry I'm taking to along, but I checked a few things using ACR 8.6
Saved a png as an 8 bit tiff, then to 16 bit. Changed the background layer into a floating layer, all opened in ACR.
It was when I added an adjustment layer, that it no longer opened in ACR.
Now what can I recommend? If you have Lightroom, you can Import and work on your layered tiffs that way. I hope this is a viable alternative for you, because I think ACR does have a problem with layered tiffs and I don't really know of any workaround, but you are free to explore.

Even though I have checked "Automatically open all supported TIFF's" in Camera RAw Preferences - My tiff files do not open up in camera RAW. How can I correct the problem?

What kind of TIFFs?  Are they multi-layered, for instance?  ACR will not open layered files.

  • ACR (CS5 Bridge) not opening all RAW files

I upgraded to CS5 last week and I'm having a problem with processing some RAW files. If I select ALL the images in a folder in Bridge and right click to open in ACR it doesn't open ALL the images - there are missing images and I cannot for the life of me figure out why it won't open these images up. I've also tried to select one of those omitted images in Bridge and right click to open up in ACR it still won't open it but if I double click it'll open it in ACR but only via PS. I don't get why it won't open some files especially as they're shot with exactly the same camera - any ideas or has anyone else noticed this happening? Thanks in advance!

Make sure you have renamed the files correctly, i.e. with the appropriate three-letter extension and with no illegal characters in the file name.
If the files are correctly labeled, you might want to purge the cache for the folder through the Tools menu in Bridge.

  • Photoshop CS5 64 bit opens, 32 bit will not using Win 7 64 operating system

    Hi;
I have not any problems using CS5 64 bit and until now could use CS5 32 bit which I use because some plug-ins will not install to 64 bit CS5, but will to CS5 32 bit.
Now: I can open 32 bit CS5, but when I attempt to open a file (JPG) it shows in navigator but will not open in work space.
    Any solutions or ideas, please.

  • Opening 32 bit TIFF in camera raw (or not...)

I have been following tutorials on creating HDR images in photoshop using the 32 bit function.
Once I have created the 32 bit image, and saved it as a Tiff file. I then go into bridge and made sure the preferences for camera raw are set to enable suppoprted TIFFs. However I cannot open this image through camera raw, it just opens up in photoshop...
In the turorials I have seen this does not seem to be a problem for others, why won't this work for me?

    Sudarshan,
    Thankyou for your reply.
I have managed to resolve this problem now. I have recently downloaded photoshop and therefore assumed it was the most up to date version. This was not however the case, as I had camera raw 7.0 installed. I have updated this to the latest version and this problem has resolved itself, I can now edit the 32-bit TIFFs in camera raw.

  • ACR or PS on Scanned 8 bit/16bit files.

I have my medium format chromes scanned to 200MB/8 bit and more recently 400MB/16 bit. These are Tiff files in EktaSpace. In the past I have done all adjustments in PS/CS3 and used PhotoKit sharpener (capture and output). I have recently started to become familiar with ACR am considering changing my workflow to do all non-local adjustments in ACR. Questions:
    * Should I do most global adjustments in ACR on the 8bit TIFF files?
    * Should I do most global adjustments in ACR on the 16bit TIFF files?
    * Should I continue to do sharpening with PK?
If ACR is recommended I'll get Real World Camera Raw for Photographers and dig in.
    Your advice is appreciated.

Ann - thanks for the response.
Part of the reason for my post is a line in "Real World Camera Raw with Adobe Photoshop CS3" by Bruce Frazer and Jeff Schewe relating to Tiff files. On page 112: "The jury is out on whether the ability for Camera Raw to open and adjust JPEG and TIFF files will end up being considered a good thing." Unfortunately it does not explain why there might be a limitations.
A couple of people I've spoken with, who do drum scans of med/large format, have indicated that they only operate in PS and do not use ACR, but only because that this is what they know and it works well for them. I, on the other hand, have only a modest knowledge of PS and from a brief exposure to ACR it is more intuitive. I would still be doing local adjustments (eg dodge/burn) with PS layers after using ACR.
I'm interested in learning if 8bit as well as 16bit are better handled in one of these two environments.
Also, is the improved capture sharpening tools in ACR negating the need to use PhotoKit Sharpener, which I'm been very pleased with.
I have Martin Evening's book for CS3 (which I would also recommend). I have not planned on updating to CS4/ACR 5.2 (to save the $), since I had read that the major benefit was performance.

  • PSE 7 - ACR 5.5 - Can open Raw files but can't see in Organiser

hi, I've just installed PSE 7 on my new Windows 7 (64 bit) Dell and have replaced the ACR with 5.5 and can open all images, including my CR2 files from my Canon 50d.  Although I can edit them with ACR from PSE the thumbnails are all just greyed out images.  Am I missing a vital piece of the puzzle to get this working properly ?
    Cheers

Bennett, when you open a raw file in Camera Raw and finish working on it the choices to click on are Open Image, Cancel, and Done. Which one are you clicking on to close the image in ACR? Cancel will do just that. Cancel the changes and the 16/8 bit setting will not be kept. The other two choices (Open Image and Done) will maintain the changes you made and the 16/8 bit setting and the color space should stick for the next image.

  • Camera Raw only offers to open 16-bit raw files in 8-bit mode

I am using a windows CS6 Bridge => Camera Raw (8.2) => CS6 Photoshop (13.0.1 x64) to try to open various 16-bit raw files (.dng, .nef, .arw) which Bridge sees as 16-bit, but only an 8-bit version makes it into photoshop.
How do I convince Camera Raw to do its job?
Lightroom (4.4) is able to export a 16-bit .psd which sort-of-works but shouldn't be necessary.
    Thanks in advance,
    Steve

You set the bitdepth in your work options dialog box, which you access by clicking on the line that looks like a link right under the ACR preview:
Don't be afraid to read the Help files or other documentation that came with Photoshop (otherwise known as Read The Fine Manual).

  • How do I open an unsupported Tiff?

    Hello there,
I have a folder of tiffs that were recovered from an sd card out of a Canon T3i.  The only recovery software that worked saved them as Tiff files.  I can view the thumbnail, I can even view the full res version in Windows Picture Viewer, but the files cannot be opened by Lightroom, Photoshop, Infranview or Gimp.  The all spit out a message to the tune of "unsupported tiff format".
I'd be happy to just get these things into jpeg format so that I can edit them, this mess is turning into a nightmare.  Please, please give me some wisdom.  I'm at a loss.

Conroy is correct for the OP in this case. But does not work on my machine.
You and your machine are not the centre of the universe. In fact, dare I suggest that they are completely irrelevant and of no interest to all except yourself.
Chris's infomation I feel is also correct and important.
Nobody has disputed the correctness or importance of Chris's information. However, Chris's informative post was not an answer to the OP's actual question. My post that was marked correct by the OP should not have been unmarked as correct in order for Chris's post to be marked correct.
If I was having the same problem as the OP and downloaded his tiff and saw I had the same problem with his as with mine.
For heaven's sake, man! Please consider someone other than yourself for a moment!
When I saw conroy's append I would have tried it and found it  did not work on my machine.
Who cares?! You and your machine are irrelevant to all except yourself.
I would then see that it worked on the Op machine and I would also have seen Chris append.
I would now be asking the Op which version of Windows and Photoshop he is using and what image Codecs he had installed on his system and I would be searching the net for codec to decode type 6 Tiff file.  So I feel both appends are important a relative.
Nothing you write can excuse my post being unmarked as correct by a member of staff after the OP marked it as correct because it did correctly answer his question.
I was trying to tell conroy Chris was not writing he was wrong or incorrect. Because of the emotion conroy's append seem to convey to me.
There was no need for you to try to tell me anything of the sort. Again, I am asking you to read the thread carefully for once. I had never claimed that Chris wrote that I was correct or incorrect. I complained that my post had been unmarked as correct in favour of his post being marked as correct when my post, not Chris's, was the actual correct answer to the specific question posed by the OP.
What's to like or not like?
"You may be amazed that anything could read the file, but I have many apps that can read it. Even Adobe Camera Raw can read it. Furthermore, if ACR is set to automatically open supported TIFFs, it does automatically open the OP's file. You may not like that, but it's true and my answer was and is correct."
To like or not to like the fact that Photoshop fails to read certain files that other graphics apps do read.

  • ACR 4.1 defaults to 8 bit

Using Photoshop CS3 under Windows XP...
Just spotted that when I open a RAW (Canon) file with CS3 (and Camera RAW 4.1), it defaults to 8-bit workflow settings (and I have to change the bit depth via the drop down box). CS2 defaulted to 16-bit
At the bottom of the Camera Raw 4.1 screen it states (for a RAW file I just opened) : Adobe RGB (1998); 8 bit; 2592 by 3888 (10.1MP); 240 ppi
Is there anyway to get it to default to 16 bit? I know it's only one extra step, but wasn't an issue with CS2
    Thanks

    >At the bottom of the Camera Raw 4.1 screen it states (for a RAW file I just opened) : Adobe RGB (1998); 8 bit; 2592 by 3888 (10.1MP); 240 ppi

The workflow settings at the bottom of the ACR screen are stick. If you choose 16 bit, the next time you use ACR it will be set to 16 bit. The same applies to the working color space
