ACS SAN EAP-TLS Issue

Hi,
we have an issue with eap-tls authentication with SAN (Subject Alternate Name). The authentication uses the CN instead of SAN.
Our enviroment is so build:
1 LWAPP Cisco AP
1 WLC & 1 WCS
1 ACS (4.2.(1) Build 15 Patch 3)
1 CA (Certification Authority enTrust)
1 Windows 8.1 Client
The ACS global authentication configuration is attacched to the discussion.
The ACS certification is loaded correctly and the CA is trusted.
On the client the user certificate is correctly loaded.
In the Failed Attempts I can found in the username field the CN of user's certificate but i cannot see the SAN.

  • Distributed ISE & Distributed PKI = EAP-TLS issues ... Correct?

    In a distributed ISE deployment with regional intermediate CA, I am getting failed authentication due to " EAP-TLS failed SSL/TLS handshake because of an unknown CA in the client certificates chain".  Client device have only one client certificate issued from regional intermediate CA. When client device goes across the region, they can't authenticate and gets this "unknown” CA error. The admin node has certificates of all intermediate CAs and root CA.
    One possible solution is to add intermediate CA certificates to all regional Node groups but apparently it is not possible on ISE policy nodes.
    Have a look at the diagram below and let me know you think (Client authentication failure at both location 1 and 3).

    we have identified the issue and it has been resolved now. It was down to one of the cert corruption on primary admin.
    It was only identified after going to debug logs in prrt. Verification was done by export that particular cert and analyzing it. Don't know how it got corrupted but it did.
    In CA cert section on primary admin node, it was displaying correct value like issue date etc but when it was exported for analysis, I couldn't open it.
    So moral of the story is that the someone thought that they need to put a status field against every cert on ISE and it wasn't decided how to check its status - no offence.

    Is it possible to authenticate Users with the EAP-TLS mechanism against a ACS Server coupled with a Novell eDirectory?

  • 'Could not find user' with EAP-TLS in ACS

    Hi all,
    we are running ACS 4.2(1) Build 15 on a Win2003 member server and use the ACS for EAP-TLS with certificates (Microsoft-PKI) for WLAN authentication (WLC 4402, 6.0 and 4.2). We are using both machine and user authentication.
    Sometimes machine authentications fail with following message in AUTH.log:
    AUTH 11/01/2010 09:11:28 E 1395 1904 0x31cb External DB [NTAuthenDLL.dll]: Could not find user host/<xxxxxxxx>.com (0x5012)
    But some minutes/hours later the same machine can authenticate successful. Other machines never have this problem, no problems at all with user authentications.
    Does anyone have an idea where I can proceed with troubleshooting? I haven't found any related messages in server event logs. Are there any other logs where I can find reasons for these problems that are occuring only sometimes?

    AUTH.log and RDS.log are two log file you need to look into on ACS side. Make sure the log level is set to "Full"
    You might need to check the log on AD side to see why it could not find this host.
    Comparing the logs between the working and non-working cases might be helpful.

  • EAP-TLS with windows machine

    I had configured everything for certificate authentication EAP-TLS in Windows 2003 AD with enterprise CA. After logging a machine to domain I receive a certificate for computer, then setup XP SP3 to reauthenticate perion 120 sec (by Microsoft KB). I try two different machines with XP to use EAP-TLS authentication, but reason is not toward success.
    I use "authentication open" on switch therefore machines could communicate with whole network. Nothing appars in Failed Attempts.csv of Passed Attempts.csv (of couse).
    Just list of RDS.log appears some activity ended with
    NAS: 172.24.34.62:27910:25 Cleaning lookup entry. AND reapeted
    If I change an authentication type to PEAP, and I had not it configured on ACS, than failed attempt log issue is arrised: EAP_PEAP Type not configured.
    Is it necessary to use http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957931 on windows XP to success machine authentication?

    what could be a problem of my unsuccessness of use EAP-TLS.

    In order to use EAP-TLS you should ensure that you have the complete certs chain. I've noticed that EAP-TLS and service pack 3 has some compatibility issue so please try authenticating with a windows XP sp2 machine.

    In Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), both the wired and wireless connections are handled by the Wireless Zero Config (WZCSVC) service. Additionally, this service is always running. In Windows XP SP3, this WZCSVC functionality is divided into the following separate services as part of Network Access Protection (NAP) integration:
    * The WZCSVC service
    * The Wired AutoConfig service (DOT3SVC)
    As we are using wired authentication, I would suggest you to check whether wired autoconfig service is running or not.You can check by going to Manually start the Wired AutoConfig service
    If you are an end-user who has already installed Windows XP SP3, follow
    these steps:
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type services.msc, and then press ENTER.
    3. Locate the Wired AutoConfig service, right-click it, and then click

    Since, we are not getting any hits on the ACS for EAP-TLS, it's clearly indicates that supplicant is not sending access-request...

    As far as peap is concerned where we are getting EAP_TYPE not configured. Here you need to enable peap-mschapv2 under the on the ACS >system configuration > global authentication setup and check the PEAP and EAP-TLS.
    Also make sure that your logging is set to full > Go to system configuration > services control > check the radio button for FULL > click on Restart.
    Also, let me know the full ACS version and platform.

    I understand how the EAP-TLS exchange works (I think), but If I have a client (wireless or wired) that is using EAP-TLS with an ACS, can I confirm the following.
    Let say both user and computer certs are employed:
    1. Both Client and ACS perform check with each others certs to ensure they are know to each other. The eap-tls exchange.
    2a. At some stage and I am assuming before the eap-tls success message is sent back to the client, the ACS has to check if either the username or computer name is in the AD database?
    2b. Wot is the paramater that is checked against the AD database?

    Client Certificates
    Client Certificates are used to positively identify the user in EAP-TLS. They have no role in building the TLS tunnel and are not used for encryption. Positive identification is accomplished by one of three means:
    CN (or Name)Comparison-Compares the CN in the certificate with the username in the database. More information on this comparison type is included in the description of the Subject field of the certificate.
    SAN Comparison-Compares the SAN in the certificate with the username in the database. This is only supported as of ACS 3.2. More information on this comparison type is included in the description of the Subject Alternative Name field of the certificate.
    Binary Comparison-Compares the certificate with a binary copy of the certificate stored in the database (only AD and LDAP can do this). Tried everything from cisco docs but not able to install certificate as its giving " Unsupported private key file format." The steps whic i had performed are...
    1) Generate Certificate Signing Request:
    Certificate subject ---- CN=idea_acs_01
    Private key file ---- privatekeyfile.pem
    Private key password -- cisco
    Retype private key password -- cisco
    Key length --- 1024
    Digest to sign with --- SHA1
    Then coppied the certificate signing request from the right side & pasted it on CA using "advanced certificate request" & then "Submit a certificate request by using a base-64-encoded CMC or PKCS #10 file, or submit a renewal request by using a base-64-encoded PKCS #7 file" option on CA & pasted the output in Base-64-encoded
    certificate request. Then issued the certificate from CA & downloaded it on my desktop & then from my desktop to FTP server.
    Even made a file naming privatekeyfile.pem with the output got during Generating Certificate Signing Request & uploaded the same on FTP.
    2)Install ACS Certificate:
    Then downloaded the certificate certnew.cer from FTP server using Download certificate file option. And also Download private key file from the FTP & typed password cisco. But after Submiting it gives error:
    "Unsupported private key file format."
    m not able to get why this srror is comming. Even tried all the steps above changing the format of Private key file ie .pvk , .pk but its not working for me.

  • ACS 5.2 / WLC - EAP-TLS Certificate from 2 CA

    Hello,
    I'm Newbie with ACS equipment, i'm trying to implement it to secure our WIFI environment.
    One wifi SSID is broadcasted on a site, I would like to authenticate WIFI client through machine certificate.
    The big deal is that some client computer belong to an AD (AD1) and having its own CA1. Other client computer belong to another AD (AD2) also having its own CA (CA2). (With no relation or between the 2 CA)
    So computer1 having machine certificate from CA1 and computer2 having machine certificate from CA2
    I have imported the root certificate from the both CA into the "certificate authorities" store of the ACS.
    I have generated certificate signing request, one for each CA. Then I have binding the CA signed certificate.
    After configuring... the access services (identity, authorization...) and so on  I have the following issue:
    - Computer with certificate from the CA1 can connect without any problem.
    - Computer with certificate from the CA2 can NOT connect:
         - After investigation: the client computer do not trust the server ACS and reject the connection
         - Error return :
    RADIUS Status:Authentication failed 11514 Unexpectedly received empty TLS message; treating as a rejection by the client
         - (If i get ridd of the option "verify server identity" on wifi optionof the client, the computer can conect: but this option is not acceptable)
         - It seems that the ACS sends only its certificate signed by the CA1
    The questions are:
    1- How can I configure the ACS to send the right certificate signed by the right CA corresponding to the computer that is intenting to authenticate
    2- I could see in documentation:
        "For TLS related EAP protocols, a single local certificate is used to authenticate the server for all the TLS related protocol"
         --> Does it mean that we can only configure one local certificate to allow the ACS to authenticate to client for all the EAP-TLS protocol used ?
         --> How can I choose it ?
         --> For the current configuration, I have only the certificate signed by the CA which is configure "EAP: Used for EAP protocols that use SSL/TLS tunneling" (i don't know if this option has an impact with the certificate presented by the ACS when it authenticate itself to the client")

    it is actually what i did.
    The point here i have 2 CA involved, with no relation between them.
    So I did the operation twice for each CA :
    -> making a certificate signing request, sent it to the CA, signed to by the CA and then imported/binded into the ACS
    -> I have added the root CA of each CA into the ACS as well.
    The point is when a computer, try to connect, it try to verify ACS server identity. And the ACS server only seems to present the certificate signed from CA1.
    So when a computer with certificate machine CA2, try to connect, it doesn't trust the ACS server has the ACS sent its certificate signed by CA1.
    I don't know how to allow the ACS to present the right signed certificated depending on the cleint that try to connect.
    Then another conf I do not understand is the option:
    EAP: Used for EAP protocols that use SSL/TLS tunneling --> in local cetificate, when you add a local certificate to the ACS
    I do not undestand what does this option stand for ?

    Doest it means that the ACS can use only one single certificate for All the TLS protocol configured in the ACS, to authenticate itself to the client?
    Or does the ACS can use a diferent local certificate from each dedicated eap-tls protocol?

  • Eap-tls wired 802.1x - certificate issue?

    I have configured ACS 4.0 and an 2003 Enterprise root CA on the same server, successfully applied the GPO to auto-enroll machines with Computer certificates, and then enabled 802.1x security on Catalyst 3750s. Note this is for wired 802.1x.
    If I reboot the machine, the EAP packets go through and you can see a successful authentication in the "Passed Authentications" log. However, if you disconnect the wire and then plug it back in, Windows gets stuck in "Validatiny Identity", and eventually a balloon pops up saying: "Windows was unable to find a certificate to log you on". Doing a 'sh dot1x interface ...' shows it is CONNECTING until the auth timeout is reached then it dumps the workstation into the guest vlan. Nothing is logged to Passed Authentications or Failed Attempts on the ACS server.
    Basically, the only time the EAP-TLS machine authentication works is when you reboot the machine. And if you change the state of the port either by diabling/enabling from the workstation or switch, or unplug the cable and plug it back in, Windows does not seem to pass the certificate information along to the PAE.
    This does not seem to happen when a user/client certificate is issued, only when it is a machine/computer certificate
    Has anybody seen this before and have any solutions why Windows cannot recogonize the machine certificate properly?

    We solved our WIRELESS problem by editing the following entrees. I sure this can be applied to the wired side somehow.

    The areas of interest are the SupplicantMode (EAPOL-Start Message) and AuthMode (what type of authentication to use) registry entries. These can be configured manually in the registry or applied via Group Policy.
    This allows just the machine to authenticate (using a Cert all ready on the Machine) then we use our ACS server to auth the user via AD.
    I am doing this wirelessly and using as long as you are using a WDS the following will be the result.
    Roaming AP to AP I only lost 1 packet.
    Roaming from Vlan to other Vlan I lost 5 packets (Different ip address)
    Shutting the wireless off and back on I only lost 8 packets.
    I thought this was a very good result. We will be launching our lab with 35 plus laptops in a classroom with 2 radios.

  • EAP-TLS configuration issues

    Hi ,
    I am trying to set up a mixed vendor NIC wireless environment and have opted to use EAP-TLS. I am however having some problems getting it to work. I am using AP1100, Aironet 350 PCMCIA cards , Microsoft CA, and ACS3.1. I have successfully setup the client and ACS side certificates and followed the instructions on the EAP-TLS Deployment Guide for Wireless networks which I downloaded off CCO. When I run a "debug radius" on the Access point I dont see any debug info. When I reconfigure everything for LEAP I can then see the AP radius debugs. Does anyone have any tips or recommendations ? I have upgraded XP to service pack 1 ? If you could perhaps direct me to a more comprehensive installation document I would also appreciate it .

    I'm trying to deploy a WLAN with EAP-TLS XP clients but without success. With LEAP all work fine and I can see AP debugs but not with EAP-TLS.
    I think certificates works fine because the same user unable to authenticate with AP1100 is able to authenticate with EAP-TLS with Catalyst 2950.
    I have see the following messages in EAPOL.log
    (Win XP Prof. with SP1)
    [1144] 17:41:25: ElProcessEapConfigChange: Modified SSID non-NULL, PCB SSID NULL
    [1144] 17:41:25: ElProcessEapConfigChange: Finished with error 0

  • EAP-TLS on ACS v4 for wireless users

    Hi,
    I?m trying to deploy EAP-TLS authentication method on ACS v4.0 for my local wireless users; really I stuck with the certificate issue and need your assistance to understand the required procedures to accomplish the task.
    As mentioned on the ACS configuration guide I have to have CA server to generate certificates for both ACS and wireless users, but I found an option on the ACS under System configuration tab then ACS Certificate Setup a Generate Self-Signed Certificate, I generated a certificate and uploaded a copy to my PC, installed and followed the recommended steps to configure the Microsoft XP client configuration but still I got the error ?Windows was unable to find a certificate to log you on to the network SSID? . Honestly I don?t know if this is possible but I gave it a try but failed.
    Kindly advice what is the appropriate and easiest way to accomplish the task, if you could provide me with helpful documents I?ll appreciate it.

    I am currently using EAP-TLS authentication on my wireless users using ACS 3.2. I have had that problem before. This is what I did...
    Setup a Microsoft Certificate server as my
    CA. You can use same machine wih your ACS and CA.
    Then, generate certificate signing request from ACS then request a server certificate from CA then copy and install a certificate to ACS. On the ACS, go to global authentication setup check the EAP-TLS cetificate. If it failed to respond means that the server certificate is not properly setup.
    On the windows xp clients, connect your machine using wired LAN, then request a certificate from CA(the same CA that you have use to your ACS) using IE (ex. http://CAip/certsrv), but this time request a client certificate. The name you should put when requesting the cert must be you local windows user, use 1024, choose microsoft base cryptographic provider 1.0. then installl the certificate on the client. Verify you client certificate it i was installed properly.
    At that poit you should be able to connect you r wireless client using EAP-TLS.

    I have a large customer that is moving into a new building and adding some
    new wireless.
    They are using a 5508 with 1142's and an ACS server.
    They will have the following SSID's
    SSID01 -> WPA-EAP-TLS
    SSID02 -> WPA2-EAP-TLS (future use)
    SSID03 -> Guest Access (internet access only)
    They currently use this design across the enterprise which has worked well.
    The problem is to get certificates pushed down to the client for the EAP-TLS
    they always connect the machine once by wire and log on to the domain so a
    GPO pushes the cert to the machine.
    This creates a problem that I don't know how to solve as they want to use
    iPhones on the new deployment.
    Does anyone have any ideas on how to get a cert down to the iPhones for use
    with the SSID's?

    I don't think we can push certs from windows server to iphones . Probably set up a webpage say a accessible from a different ssid  from which clients can download and install cert. ?

  • EAP-TLS or PEAP authentication failed during SSL handshake to the ACS serve

    We are running the LWAPP (2006 wlc's and 1242 AP's) and using the ACS 4.0 for authentication. Our users are
    experiencing an issue, where they are successfully authenticated the first time, however as the number of them is increasing, they're starting to drop the connections and being prompted to re-authenticate. At this point, they are not being able to authenticate again.
    We're using PEAP for the authentication and Win XP SP2 clients as the supplicants. The error message that we are seeing on the ACS for that controller is "EAP-TLS or PEAP authentication failed during SSL handshake to the ACS server"...Not sure if this error msg is relevant since we have other WLC's that are working OK and still generating the same error msg on the ACS...
