Active database duplication v.s. backup based duplication

I would like to get some advice from forum that comparing active database duplication with backup based duplication. Which one could do better in performance?
In Oracle 11g, DBA can use RMAN DUPLICATE to clone the database either on the same host or on the remote host. Using RMAN DUPLICATE has two methods:
1. active database duplication -- this is connect to TARGET instance and Auxiliary instance. No backup needed and RMAN will duplicate source database to auxiliary database. This sound very good and save a lot of time if your database is big one (over a couple of TB). This method rely on network and on production database (target DB). It will affect production database performance a lot.
2. backup based duplication - this is to RMAN backup target database, then either physically move backup set to remote host, then connect to taregt and auxiliary to do duplicate. Or without connecting to target, but connect to catalog and auxiliary to do duplication , or don't connect to catalog and only connect to auxiliary with backup location to do duplication. This is called targetless duplication. This method sound cheaper in cost. So if I have a production DB with the size over 4 TB. We are using NAS storage. When I RMAN production DB to a location on storage, can I keep backup set there, then on auxiliary host to mount to that location, then RMAN duplicate database with backup location. In this way, I don't need to physically move backup set from target to auxiliary.
I would like to hear from you. What is pros and cons of different RMAN duplication methods. Thanks.

#1 has better performance, I have seen no impact on a 2T source database using 4 channels (takes approx. 4 hours.)
:p

  • Problems doing an active Database duplication through RMAN

    Hi,
    I'm trying to do active Database duplication through RMAN (http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B28359_01/backup.111/b28270/rcmdupdb.htm#).
    My OS is Sun Solaris 5
    Oracle version: 11gR1 Database on a 11gR2 Grid.
    I'm receiving the error
    RMAN> connect auxiliary sys/sys@rac402

    I'm seeing the listeners are in blocked state as mt auxiliary Database is in nomount state.
    Service "rac40" has 1 instance(s).
    Instance "rac402", status BLOCKED, has 1 handler(s) for this service...
    Service "rac40_XPT" has 1 instance(s).
    Instance "rac402", status BLOCKED, has 1 handler(s) for this service...
    If I connect directly, I'm able to connect ("connect auxiliary / " after setting ORACLE_SID)
    But active RMAN is saying
    RMAN-03002: failure of Duplicate Db command at 06/18/2012 01:37:14
    RMAN-06217: not connected to auxiliary database with a net service name (I don't know why Oracle is so specific in connecting through net service name only!!!)
    So, how could I move forward?? any help is greatly appreciated!!!
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    CSM

  • Creating a duplicated database from active database

    I'm having problem trying to duplicate a database from a target database (PROD) to the auxiliary one (AUX).
    This is what I've configured:
    listener.ora
    SID_LIST_LISTENER =
      (SID_LIST =
        (SID_DESC =
          (GLOBAL_DBNAME = PROD)
          (ORACLE_HOME = /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1/)
          (SID_NAME = PROD)
        (SID_DESC =
          (GLOBAL_DBNAME = AUX)
          (ORACLE_HOME = /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1/)
          (SID_NAME = AUX)
    LISTENER =
      (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
        (DESCRIPTION =
          (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = my_ip)(PORT = 1521))
    ADR_BASE_LISTENER = /u01/app/oracletnsnames.ora
    AUX =
      (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = my_ip)(PORT = 1521)))
        (CONNECT_DATA =
          (SERVER = DEDICATED)
          (SERVICE_NAME = AUX)

      (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = my_ip)(PORT = 1521)))
        (CONNECT_DATA =
          (SERVER = DEDICATED)
          (SERVICE_NAME = PROD)
      )/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1/dbs/initAUX.ora
    db_name='AUX'
    cp /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1/dbs/orapwPROD /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1/dbs/orapwAUX- Started PROD database (open and in archive log mode)
    - Started AUX database (in nomount mode and usinf pfile='/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1/dbs/initAUX.ora')
    But when I issue the following command I get connected to auxiliary database (not started) :
    rman target sys/oracle@PROD auxiliary sys/oracle@AUX

    The command completed successfullyI have already created a duplicated database from a backup of the target one and the configuration was quite the same: the differences are that using active database duplication I needed to use orapw files (and they need to have the same password) and that I needed to connect using Oracle Net service name to connect to the auxiliary instance.. otherwise I got:
    export ORACLE_SID=AUX
    rman target sys/oracle@PROD auxiliary sys/oracle

    connected to auxiliary database: AUX (not mounted)

    Don't know if this will help, but I use the connect string below to connect, then run the command below. This is, of course, after the rman backup from the prod system has been copied to the flash_recovery_area of the aux database. All file paths are the same between the two systems. Works like a charm most nights. The local tnsnames file on the rman catalog server has working entries for @SDPROD, @rman and @SDSTB.

    Yes, this is it.
    I tested only three cases before:
    - not allocating any channel
    - allocating local channel only
    - allocating auxiliary channel only
    I need to allocate both channels in the run block, then it works.

  • Duplicate from Active database

    Hi,
    I have RAC primary database running in 11.2.0.3 with linux 5(dc). We also have configured RAC cluster on DR site recently.Now we need to create stanby database on DR site.
    For this is have following doubts
    My database size is 6TB(from dba_segmnets) and total is 14TB(from dba_data_files)
    1) How duplicate of active database works internally? Does it copy the exact file to standby site for example copy datafile(which is of 5GB in size) and send it over to standby over network?
    2) Both primary and standby sites are in different states, so i was thinking to backup the primary database first to tapes and then courier tapes to dr site and then finally restore and recover standby.
    I have doubts in above approaches which should i implement. I think active database duplication will skip a)backup time b) courier time. Is that correct?
    However if my database size is 14TB and using 1st method, does it send files to dr worth of 14TB size?

    I am working on active database duplication and has below issue. Can any one help me on this?

  • Tuning RMAN - duplicate active database with size 1.7TB

    Dear Oracle experts!
    We are going to have a project where we will migrate an ERP standalone database to RAC cluster database.
    The source standalone db version is 11gR3 with the latest PSU patch.
    The target database would be on the same version on a RAC cluster with ASM.
    Of course we want to use RMAN for duplication. The source box and the target cluster nodes are different physical servers.
    Being given that the database is around 1.7TB, I would like to ask you some kind of best practices what rman options we can leverage having less time for the actual data migration. In the past I did several RAC migration with 4 allocated channels. Here is a sample for the RMAN script:
    run
    allocate channel dev1 device type disk;
    allocate channel dev2 device type disk;
    allocate channel dev3 device type disk;
    allocate channel dev4 device type disk;
    allocate auxiliary channel dev5 device type disk;
    allocate auxiliary channel dev6 device type disk;
    allocate auxiliary channel dev7 device type disk;
    allocate auxiliary channel dev8 device type disk;
    duplicate target database to NEW_RAC
    from active database
    password file
    spfile
    set control_files='+FRA_DG/NEW_RAC/controlfile/control01.ctl','+DATA_DG/NEW_RAC/controlfile/control02.ctl'
    set db_create_file_dest='+DATA_DG'
    set db_create_online_log_dest_1='+FRA_DG'
    set db_recovery_file_dest='+FRA_DG'
    set db_recovery_file_dest_size='1G';
    Of course there are many pre and post steps like configuring tnsnames for rman then creating undo tablespaces, rac services etc. I would like to ask you to focus on the main data migration part and let me know your suggestions.
    Thank you in advance,
    Laszlo

    We are going to have a project where we will migrate an ERP standalone database to RAC cluster database.This is what we do in similar situations :
    1. Full RMAN backup of the source database, and subsequent archivelogs backup every 2 hours
    2. Restore the full backup on the new server, changing file names (if necessary, as in your case)
    3. Apply all archivelogs generated in the meantime
    4. Archive the last log and stop the source database and Application Servers
    5. Apply the last log on the new server, and start the database
    6. Change what needed on Application Servers and start applications.
    The above requires a few minutes downtime. I use the same procedure for database upgrades, and in this case the downtime is, more or less, half an hour.

    Hello;
    Script has to be run from auxiliary.
    Great details, but what I don't see is how you connect in RMAN.
    Example
    Start RMAN
    $ORACLE_HOME/bin/rman target=sys/@recover2 auxiliary=sys/@reclone
    Recovery Manager: Release 11.2.0.2.0 - Production on Wed Feb 22 14:50:31 2012
    Copyright (c) 1982, 2009, Oracle and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved.
    connected to target database: RECOVER2 (DBID=3806912436)
    connected to auxiliary database: RECLONE (not mounted)Nothing in your tnsnames or listener jumps out as wrong. I copied them into my text editor and compared against my working ones.
    Generally for active duplication I start the future standby on a pfile NOMOUNT.
    Auxiliary Instance Initialization Parameters Needed :
    DB_NAME
    CONTROL_FILES
    DB_BLOCK_SIZE
    ( add extra parameters like DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT and LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT instead of using the SET command - clean up standby spfile right after duplication )
    Then start RMAN and finally run a single line duplication command.
    $ORACLE_HOME/bin/rman target=sys/@primary auxiliary=sys/@standby
    RMAN>duplicate target database for standby from active database NOFILENAMECHECK;Best Regards

  • RMAN restore from active database, ASM

    I'm attempting to refresh a stage database from a prod database using RMAN restore from active database. Both are on ASM. After working through various hurdles, I've got one issue I'm a bit stuck on. I've got a handful of data files that do NOT have OMF names (ie MSTRDATA/mstrmdpd/datafile/gsa_indx instead of MSTRDATA/mstrmdpd/datafile/gsa_indx.351.714779777) and these are failing when I do the restore. The syntax I'm using in RMAN is as follows:
    duplicate target database to dwstage
    from active database
    spfile parameter_value_convert 'dwprod','dwstage'
    SET DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT '+DWPROD','+DWSTAGE'
    SET LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT '+DWPROD','+DWSTAGE';
    The error message I'm getting is this:
    RMAN-03009: failure of backup command on ORA_DISK_1 channel at 04/21/2011 13:26:24
    ORA-17628: Oracle error 19505 returned by remote Oracle server
    continuing other job steps, job failed will not be re-run
    Normally from what I've seen/read this error can be traced back to needing to pre-create the directories for the controlfiles etc, but since 90% of the datafiles copied correctly...
    Any suggestions as to a way around this, or am I going to be forced to restore from a backupset?

    This fails saying that "ORA-12528: TNS:listener: all appropriate instances are blocking new connections" which is quite normal given that the listener is havig a handle in BLOCKED state for this AUXDB as it is in NOMOUNT state.
    Could you please help me on how to proceed?
    One option can be to create the controlfile manually and mount the instance before doing the duplicate. I hope Rman can continue from there.
    Another option is to go for backup based duplicate.
    Is there any other way to go?
    Provide static registration on AUXILIARY side for your auxiliary instance and try again.For example change listener.ora file as
    SID_LIST_LISTENER =
      (SID_LIST =
        (SID_DESC =
          (GLOBAL_DBNAME = AUXDB)
          (ORACLE_HOME = <your oracle home>)
          (SID_NAME = AUXDB)
    LISTENER =
      (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = <auxiliary host/ip>)(PORT = 1521))
      )And restart listener on auxiliary host then try again

  • Standby from active database

    Hello,
    I am attempting to create a physical standby database, following this guide:
    http://www.oracle.com/global/uk/education/downloads/uwe_data_guard.pdf
    as well as the oracle documentation on Data Guard. Using Oracle 11gR2 patched at #7 running on Windows Server 2008.
    I've set all the parameters, created password files and checked connectivity. Hopefully correctly. I will post pfile exports at the end.
    Here is where I hit a dead end.
    RMAN> connect target system/password@HPROD89
    connected to target database : HPROD89 (DBID)
    RMAN> connect auxiliary sys/password@HPROD89STND
    connected to auxiliary database: HPROD89STND (not mounted)
    RMAN> duplicate target database for standby from active database;Error from spool. I need to spool the file to get the error code, otherwise the only thing rman provides is a "error message stack follows" message with nothing after that.
    RMAN-03002: failure of Duplicate Db command at 11/19/2010 21:24:04
    RMAN-06136: ORACLE error from auxiliary database: ORA-03114: not connected to ORACLEI'm running rman on the standby server with the database in NOMOUNT as the guide linked above suggests. This raises a simple question to start with: what server do I run rman on? The one with the primary database, or on the standby?
    I hope it's just because it's getting late, but this issue has me confused .. rman clearly connects the auxiliary, but when trying to perform the actual duplication, it's not connected.
    Thanks for input.
    Regards.

    No archivelogs were purged or backed up and the current logs were retained....so im somewhat confused....i am not restoring from backup but running active duplicate...
    should I re-run the command with:
    SET UNTIL SEQUENCE 64713 THREAD 1

  • RMAN DUPLICATE FOR STANDBY FROM ACTIVE DATABASE fails

    Hello
    I'm trying to use RMAN DUPLICATE to create a standby database using Oracle 11.2.0.3 with PSU 6 on HP-UX.
    Primary is 2 node RAC. Standby is also 2 node RAC.
    Standby database instance is started in nomount mode.
    I use:
    duplicate target database for standby from active database
      spfile
      <some spfile parameters>
    with PFILE I get:
    RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
    RMAN-00569: =============== ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS ===============
    RMAN-00571: ===========================================================

    ORA-27037: unable to obtain file status
    HPUX-ia64 Error: 2: No such file or directory
    With SPFILE I get;

    RMAN-05537: DUPLICATE without TARGET connection when auxiliary instance is started with spfile cannot use SPFILE clause
    But I do have RMAN connexion to target database.
    Thanks for your help.

    Here is the output beginning of the script which clearly shows that I'm always connected to target database:
