Activity window in safari is very complicated.. any fix?

Streaming videos in safari were so easy to download in Lion. Mountain Lion really made the activity window a mess(in my opinion)! Has anyone found a way to download streamning videos in Safari? I tried downloading from the new activity window but with least success.
Any suggestions?

I've been searching this on google for days now with very little success. However, I did find a method that works. I put this together from bits and pieces of what i've found on google, then expanded on it. It's not as easy as it was with the original activity window, however it does the job and I hope that this works out for you.
1) First off you need to enable the Developer menu in safari: Safari>Preferences>Advanced and put a check box next to "show developer menu in menu bar". Once you've done this, you'll find a new menu at the top of the screen named "Develop". Now if you've been searching google you've probably seen this already, tried it out, and failed. Keep reading though, it gets better
2) Next, navigate to the website from which you would like to download the streaming video/music/content. Do not click on the content yet to start it. You do not want safari to start downloading/streaming before you are ready to capture it.
3) Once you are at the site you want, go to the "Develop" menu and click on "Start Timeline Recording" The bottom third of safari will now show you all the different file/content that are currently being streamed to your computer. It shouldn't show anything yet since you havn't started streaming your video yet.
4) Once you have clicked on that, you should now start to play the content which you want to download.
5) Now that it is streaming and downloading, it will show up in the Network Requests Timeline. If you are trying to download a flash video or sound file, I would expect it to be bigger than 1MB, so on the right side of the network requests window, sort the files by size so that the largest files appear on top. When you believe you see the file that you wish to download, go back up to the "Develop" windows and click on "Stop Timeline Recording".
6) Next to the file that you wish to download in the Network Requests Timeline, there should be a little arrow that is pointing to the right. Click on it and it will try to play the video. It has a hard time loading for me, but that isn't important. What is important is that on the right side of the window, it gives you the full address of the video file.
7) Highlight the address, copy it, and paste it into the address bar of safari and press enter. The file will now begin to download to your "downloads" folder or wherever you have designated your files to be downloaded to.
And your done!!!!!!
It's definately not as easy as the old windows activity window, but it works, and in some ways is easier..... Once you get in the habbit of doing it correctly. If anybody is still having trouble, make a reply on here and I will see about doing a picture or video tutorial.
And to anybody who works for Apple that might read this, the activity window was one of the single greatest features that I have ever seen on a web browser. I suspect it may have been removed beacuse of people downloading material(s) that they were not suppose to download, but for all the bad that might have been done with it, it was an amazing tool and a real loss for safari which I think will drive people to other browsers. Please re-activate the activity window and don't cripple safari any further.

  • What happened to the Activity window in Safari?

there is no more Activity window in Safari.  What happened and how can I geet it back?

In Safari 6 in preferences you navigate to the advanced menu and click on the "Show develop menu in menu bar" and you should be able to see much of what is in the page. It certainly is not what we are used to and there are certainly a number of strange changes i am not sure developers have tested on the average user before implementing.

  • "Activity window" in Safari no longer works to download YouTube videos. Why not? Workaround?

For years I have used Apple's recommended standard technique whenever I wanted to download a Flash video embedded in a YouTube page to my hard drive:
    - Open a YouTube page and click on the video's "play" button to get it started;
    - Press command-option-A to then open up Safari's "Activity Window" which lists all the components of the page;
    - Find on the list the component for the loading Flash video, which is usually much larger (measured in MB rather than KB) than all the other components, and also is usually still in the process of loading, so it's easy to spot;
    - Double-click the component's name on the list in the Activity Window, and voila, the video downloads to my hard drive.
This "trick" is described everywhere as THE standard way to download YouTube videos (and similar page components); and I have used it successfully for many years.
HOWEVER, sometime very recently (not sure when, exactly -- a few weeks or months ago) YouTube has changed the way its pages are coded, so that this technique no longer works. When I open the Activity Window, instead of seeing one large loading video file that's easily identifiable, I see a whole series of large files, all exactly 1.7mb big (no matter how large the file size of the actual video in question is), and they constantly increase in number -- at first there are two such files, but over the seconds and minutes more and more appear. Furthermore, many files with no named size are constantly loading and then disappearing. And here's the whole point: I've tried double-clicking on ALL of these files, dozens of ways on dozens of YouTube pages, and none of the are the video file I seek and none of them cause the file to  download to my hard drive.
If I click on one the mysterious 1.7mb components, I indeed get a ".flv" downloaded to my hard drive, but it's not actually a Flash video; clicking on its downloaded file icon just brings up a blank box or an error message saying that it's not really a video file at all. I think it's some sort of "decoy" file or something to do with streaming Flash code.
To see what I mean, just go to YouTube, load any random video page, and then open Safari's Activity WIndow and try to download the video that way.
This happens on an iMac running Safari 5.1 on OSX 10.6.8, and also on a MacBook Pro running Safari 5.0.2  on OSX 10.6.5, and on a few other new-ish Macs I tested it out on, but failed to note their version numbers.
I'm presuming that this problem is not specific to my computer, but is caused by the way that YouTube altered the background code for their pages. I don't know if the glitch is an intentional attempt by YouTube to prevent downloads, or if it is an accidental "bug" of the new code. Either way:
How can I fix the problem? Is there some other lesser-known built-in way for Safari/Mac to download the new kind of YouTube videos? Or is there some reliable freeware or shareware or plug-in or extension or whatever for Safari that would enable YouTube downloading?
I tried a freeware program called "Evom" that was highly touted, but it too was thwarted by the new YouTube code and failed to extract any videos from the YouTube page, even though that's what the application was designed to do.
As a side note, I will say that I also have (though rarely use) FireFox for Mac, and the "Unplug" plug-in installed on it, and that ALSO "broke" recently and no longer has the capacity to recognize or download YouTube videos, even though previously it worked fine. This is why I think the issue is not specific to my set-up or computer, but is due to a change in YouTube's underlying code.)
Any help with an explanation, solution or workaround would be much appreciated (by me and by millions of others who I assume are facing the same problem!).

    Carolyn:
I just now did exactly as you recommended. Result? No change.
Even after trashing the files and restarting and everything else, the Activity Window and YouTube behave exactly as they did before.
(I had actually previously tried something very similar to your recommendation, and it didn't have any effect then either.)
In case it's helpful, here's an example of what one of the mystery components that load endlessly in the Activity Window is listed as:
    http://s.youtube.com/s?rendering=software&lact=102489&decoding=&rt=112.382&et=11 0.829&tsphab=1&st=69.939&tspne=0&tspfdt=262&nsiabblmin=62945.000&nsidf=2&tabsb=1 &ad_flags=0&h=360&nsiabblmean=72646.865&md=1&docid=zPxFu7taftE&bc=15194849&csipt =watch5ad&ad_event=3&el=detailpage&hasstoryboard=1&vid=72A5TVVpDgRoXDV3HvMeKPjLx BFdU61DC&fmt=34&cr=US&sd=BD075E8E6HH1336502192683396&vtmp=1&nsiabblmax=79054.000 &hl=en_US&ns=yt&nsivbblmax=774478.000&referrer=None&sidx=0&hbd=7790924&w=480&hbt =2.751&cid=6&sendtmp=1&sst=0&cfps=25.974025974025974&screenw=1440&mt=0.6&vq=auto &playerw=640&playerh=390&slots=sst~0;sidx~0;at~2_3&scoville=1&at=2_3&volume=100& art=1.842&mos=0&plid=AAS_iqoqfi0mjNc0&fs=0&nsivbblc=208&nsivbblmin=561638.000&bd =931267&allowed=1_1,1_3,2_1,2_3&bt=7.441&fvid=bNz97ILtwqc&screenh=900&len=127.92 &vw=480&nsivbblmean=668895.024&nsiabblc=208&vh=360&fexp=912001,914050,913539,919 306,907217,901802,906507

  • Where's The Activity Window in Safari 6?

    ?

I tried re-installing 5.1.7 but it immediately crashes now. Switching the Safari 6 file for the 5.17 file isn't enough; there are probably other files that need to be downgraded also but I didnt want to play around with that. I have found a weird, obtuse work-around, though.
    1.      Enable the Developer menu under Preference...Advanced.
    2.      Open the Web Inspector BEFORE you get to the page with the movie you want to save. You can actually go to the page first, then open the inspector, then hit back then forward to reload the movie page. Just hitting reload may also work.
    3.      In the left-most pane there will be a list of folders; one should be titled "Other". Reload the page to get this folder if it's not there. I don't know what to tell you if there is no "Other" folder.
    4.      Click the triangle to open the Other folder.
    5.      One of the things listed in Other should be the movie file; click on it.
    6.      In the right-most pane the full url of the movie willl be listed. Copy this URL just like you would've from the activity window.
This has worked for me. I'd rather have the Activity window back.

  • Apple deleted the Activity Window in Safari 6? That's crazy!

Like many people - millions probably - I sometimes download videos from the Web by using Safari's Activity Window.
    Now it has gone.
Apple, if you are listening, please put it back....pronto!
I would trade it for all the other new features in Mountain Lion.

    Hi GeorgiPorgi,
I couldn't agree more. What were they thinking?
May I suggest you write to them here. I did, as have many others.
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/safari.html
The more requests they get to bring back the Activity Window, the more chance that it will happen.
    best,
    James

  • Activity window in Safari 7?

The Activity window has come and gone several times over the generations of Safari, I see in Safari 7 it is gone again, is this true or do I need to look elsewhere?

Actually, I kind of found a solution using the new system. I was having trouble downloading videos from Wistia, who takes great pains to embed them and for which a scraping tool like keepvid.com has yet to be developed. But if you look in the Resources and search for ".mp4" it will narrow down the heirarchy. (you can also search for .flv or .mp3, or whatever) From there, see which is the file you're actually looking for and copy the full URL to the file, as shown in the right paneI.
It's not a full replacement for the old Activity panel, but it gets the job done.

  • ExtendScript2 CS3 Object Model Viewer (very complicated - any alternative viewer ??)

hallo iam just starting with JavaScript in CS3 and what i found most confusing is the Adobe's Object Model Viewer in ExtendScript2...
its no help whatsoever and i didnt figure out the logics of the various dictionary items listed, whatsoever...
if this is currentlly the only complete reference to CS3 JavaScript model than god help us....
the ExtendScript2 Object Model Viewer needs to be COMPLETELLY REWORKED to become a full powered dictionary tool instead of an unorganized pile of items
have you tried InDesign CS3 AppleScript Dictionary in Apple's ScriptEditor... thats a dictionary of object model as i would imagine
    1) its FULLY tree-structured dictionary from topmost level down
    2) all items are categorized and sorted BY TYPE using various icons
    3) every item has a properties catalog card with nice english explanations of that function with hyperlinks to all other relevant items
IS THERE ANY ALTERNATIVE TO VIEW CS3 JAVASCRIPT OBJECT MODEL AND NOT USE THE EXTENDSCRIPT2 WEAK VIEWER ?????

    Hi Rosta,
I have to admit that I don't understand. I see very little difference between the ESTK object model viewer and the AppleScript dictionary viewer. If anything, I think the ESTK version is superior because it connects methods with their objects--something that the AppleScript viewer doesn't do at all. But I pretty much find them equivalent.
Regardless, the descriptions are *identical* between the object model viewer in the ESTK, the AppleScript dictionary viewer, and the Visual Basic/VBA object browser. All descriptions come from the scripting resources in InDesign, and all languages use the same description string.
Jongware's HTML version, however, is much better than any of the above. Its hyperlinking is very good, and everything else can be found with your browser's Find command.
Relying on the object model viewers has freed me from the task of maintaining the reference PDFs--which was taking almost all of my time. Without that burden, I can focus on writing the Scripting Guides, Scripting Tutorial, and example scripts. While I agree that the object model viewers aren't perfect, I believe that this is a better use of my time. I think that scripting examples are more useful, overall, than reference documentation (which simply repeats the information from the scripting resources, in any case).
One very nice thing--because we have to rely on the object model viewers, we were allowed to fix literally hundreds of errors in the descriptions in the scripting resources.
    Thanks,
    Ole

Not all YouTube videos are available for downloading, but:
There is the Free  iTube Grabber which can capture almost any audio and/or video stream (it says here) but only works with Intel Macs.
    http://itube-grabber.en.softonic.com/mac
Firefox Download Helper is also supposed to work, you have to be logged into YouTube first.
and the RealPlayer Downloader that comes with RealPlayer SP for Mac from:
    http://www.real.com/realplayer/mac
which also downloads videos from YouTube.
There is also iTubeX which allows you to download videos (Flash, HTML5 and others), .mp3 and .swf files from almost every website as easily as possible:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/27604/itubex
Lastly: How to download Flash videos and play them in Quicktime using Perian is explained here:

It's the video at the bottom of the page.

  • Z68-GD65 Hangs on Starting Windows because of USB Controller. Any fixes?

Issue: During Windows 7 (32 bit & 64 bit) installation and startup, the computer hangs at "Starting Windows". It will display a pixel or two of the first red part of the logo animation and then stop.
    System Setup/Hardware:
    Mobo - Z68-GD65
    RAM - Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB)
    HDD - Corsair Force 3 60GB SSD
    CPU - Intel i5-2400 (Sandybridge)
PSU - Antec Earth Watts 650W
GPU - Asus Geforce GTX 560 Ti
Cause: I found that when I disabled the USB Controller completely from the BIOS, everything worked smoothly (install & startup). If I left the USB Controller enabled and just disabled the Legacy Controller, I would be left with a blinking DOS cursor after POST.
This is an issue because both keyboard and mouse are USB. I had to borrow an old PS/2 mouse to even install windows.
    Troubleshooting tried:
    - Tried disabling EVERY (and yes, I mean every, I've rebooted this thing 50+ times [stopped keeping track]) setting that can possible be disabled individually
    - Tried unplugged every component except: board, hdd and dvdrom
    - Tried swapping RAM
    - Tried swapping HDDs (to Sata non SSD)
    - Tried swapping PSUs
    - Tried changing Windows 7 install discs (one 32 bit, one 64 bit)
    - Tried removing all motherboard connections (FP audio, FP usb, etc, everything but 24+8pin power)
    - Tried clearing CMOS and resetting BIOS
    - Tried enabling USB Controller via ClickOnce BIOS and restarting
    - Tried fully updating Windows 7 and all drivers (video, mobo, etc)
    - Tried updating BIOS with Live 5
    - Tried leaving only USB 3.0 Controller enabled and plugging mouse/keyboard into those ports (blue on back)
    - Tried Windows repair
    - Tried Windows boot logging (got to file CLASSPNP.sys)
    - Tried booting to Safe Mode
    - Tried banging head on wall  (this was successful in giving me a headache, but not booting the computer)
I mainly list the troubleshooting above to convey the amount of frustration I've had with this board.
The USB Controller simply seems bad or the driver (or the way the board interacts/loads the Windows driver) is bad. I must have USB on my computer.
If I need to RMA, please let me know, however, I would hope there is a solution out there to fix the USB Controller issue. The RMA deadline is the 20th, I hope I can get an answer one way or the other before this as if there is no answer, I will be forced to RMA and go with another product from a different manufacturer (I really wanted to get over my "Asus only" attitude and try you MSI! I've been impressed up until this point, please don't let me down).
    Please help?
-Frazzled not tech illiterate personal system builder.

    phasedone,
I was having the exact same issue with a new build (Mobo MSI Z68-GD65-G3).  I had been banging my head against the wall for a while and then I came across your post.  Subsequently, I disabled the USB controller in BIOS and my Win 7 install ran fine (minus the fact that I had no access to my USB keyboard and mouse).   I set the BIOS back to default settings which re-enabled the USB controller, and thus was able to re-plug the mouse and keyboard in after the windows loading screen, where the 4 colored orbs come together to make the Windows flag.  This seemed to do the trick.
Now the problem is, everytime the computer restarts (i.e. for any Windows updates), it freezes at the same point it would during the installation.  This is again assuming the mouse and keyboard are still plugged into the rear panel USB ports.  Which of course they're going to be!
Anyone with a recommendation as to how to fix this?  Is this a hardware defect or can it be solved with some sort of driver or firmware update?  I'm at a loss... but I certainly shouldn't have to unplug all USBs before starting the computer, that's just nuts.
I'm considering RMA as well, but would like to see if any MSI staff members or forum members might be able to share their insight.

  • IPad 1 activation issue with iOS 5.1 update - any fixes?

Tried to update my iPad 1 over WiFi to iOS 5.1 this morning.  I get a message:
"iPad could not be activated because activation servier is termporarily unavailable.  Try connecting your iPad to iTunes to activate it, or try again in a couple minutes"
No luck - I've tried all day.  When connecting direclty to may iMac, I get an iTunes message stating that it cannot recognize the contents of the iPad and suggests a full factory restore (which I want to avoid unless no other option is available).  iTunes does recognize that the iPad has OS 5.1 installed, however.  I've tried a few tricks I've seen posted (such as changing the DNS #), but nothing works to "activate" it.   I don't ever recall needing to "activate" an iPad with the previous updates - only after initial purchase.
If anyone has the same problem, and has found a fix, I'd appreciate the help.  Thanks.

Thanks - I hadn't tried that earlier (had only tried the red slider shutdown).   The problem, however, still persists (states activation server is termporarily unavailable).
After two days of not being able to use the iPad, I"m about to break down and try restoring to factory conditions......  I hope that works.
