Added a new printer; other printers in Printer Utility list dissappeared

Ok, i did something unconscious. Added a new printer (Canon MP160) to a list of many while the Printer Setup Utility was open. No harm i figured, when i rebooted 4 printers from my list were gone. Found them in Users> Library> Printers. Any way to simply drag & drop them back to the list? I don't seem to be able to add tyhem....
Thanks for offering any insight or solutions.

Because the printers are still showing in Users/Library/Printers then that shows that they are still installed on your Mac. So it is possible that as the Printer Setup Utility was open it may have caused your current problem, although from what I remember most of the Canon installers I've run close all open application before installing? Anyway, if another restart doesn't get them back into view then it could be that the printers.conf file (a hidden file located in etc/cups) has not updated correctly. Open Safari and type "http://127.0.0.1:631/printers". You should see all the printers currently installed and if this file is 'damaged' then you may only see the MP160.
Of course, it may be a lot simpler than this. It could be due to the View menu in the Printer Setup Utility. Select View > Columns and enable 'In Menu'. If there is no tick next to the other printers then that can be one reason.
Also, if the other printers are not currently connected to the Mac you are using, then that can also stop the printers from being displayed. Also, if they are shared printers and the Mac sharing them is off/sleep, then that can stop them from appearing also.

  • New printer not listed within Reader as an option for printing

    Hi all
Prior to changing printers, Reader worked fine.
Our old Dell 1815dn laser printer needed to be replaced. We bought an updated model, the Dell 2335dn.  We first uninstalled the old printer and then installed the new one. Word documents print without a problem.  However, when trying to print a PDF document, the new printer is not listed as an option but the old one is, despite having been uninstalled.  I have updated Reader to v11 and tried again with the same result.  The laptop has been completely shut down between the varios stages of this.
    Any ideas please?

    Hi Michael.
The screenprint is attached (or below! - I'm not sure which as I type!).
The printer shown (1815) is the old, uninstalled one.  The new one is a Dell 2335dn and isn't shown at all.

  • Adding a new value at the beginning of the list

    Hi,
I've a list of values which are hard coded in the 'Elements in List' property for a Combo Box. Now, I want to add a new value at the beginning of the list. It doesn't allow me to add one. I have to delete all values and re-enter from the first which includes the new one. Is there any way that I can add a new value at the beginning of the list without having to remove other values.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi ,
In order to implement the appropriate moves you have to use the key combinations : 1) <shift>+<ctrl>+'<' for deletion of the current list item(where the cursor is located)
2)<shift>+<ctrl>+'>' for appending a blank row in order to add a new element...

  • Adding a new printer in OS9.2.x

I am working on OS 9.2 and I need to know how to setup a printer that is connected through a network. If someone could help me with a step by step guide that would be great.

    Hi, amortae -
Assuming the netwwork is an ethernet one, and the printer is connected directly to the network (rtaher than connected to a computer which is connected to the network), it should be a simple matter.
If it is a Postscript printer, open Chooser (in the Apple menu); in the lefthand pane of Chooser select LaserWriter 8. If the printer is supported by that driver, its name will appear on the righthand side. Select it, and a Create or Setup button should become active at the bottom of that side of Chooser. Click that button and follow the prompts.
Some printers have additional features that require the installation of their PPD (Postscript Printer Description) file. If so, the software for that will have come with the printer, and may also be downloadable from the printer manufacurer's website.
Some printers will not work with LaserWriter 8, and require that their own software be installed. If the printer in question is one of those, you will need to install that software, then restart, go to Chooser, then select the appropriate proprietary printer driver on the left - at that point the printer should appear in the righthand pane, and can be selected.
Just about all HP Laserjet printers designed to work with OS 9 will work with LaserWriter 8 as the software.

  • Adding a new printer

Alright i am Mac Stupid. I know less than nothing about Mac OS's. How do I add a printer in OS 9.x? I am trying to install an HP LaserJet 5P via a USB to Parallel converter cable. The Imac sees the printer but we keep getting an error on the display when we try to send a print job. Something about a level 3 error. Anybody have any ideas?

Is it a PostScript Level 3 error? Which app are you printing from and which printer driver are you using? For most jobs, the Apple LaserWriter driver should be fine, but when you're using Adobe software, you may want to use the Adobe PS driver. They should both be available in the "Chooser".
... at least that's how it works with my HP LaserJet 5MP. The "M" stands for Mac, since it was packaged with mac specific CDs and manuals. The hardware should be the same.

  • Recently bought new printer. All works fine with one OSX user. However, cannot print anything on other OSX user, including cannot print Adobe PDFs or to new printer. Puzzling!

    computer = Mac PowerPC G5
    OS = 10.4.11
    Adobe Acrobat 7
    HP laserjet M1212nf
I recently bought a new HP printer. I was on an admin user when I installed it. All works fine with this admin account/user. I can print to the HP, print to Adobe PDFs.
However, when I then go over to another user account, I cannot print *anything*. I cannot print to Adobe PDF, cannot print to the new HP. If I try to print an excel file, it says "cannot communicate with the printer" along with some useless suggestions. If I try to print a page on FireFox, nothing happens. That is, sure I get the usual dialog box, click the appropriate choice of printer, click the number of copies, then click the OK button ... and nothing happens. No pdf process is started. Nothing is sent to the HP printer.
The fact that both printer options are not working suggests it is some kind of OS problem, not specific to either printer "device".
    Any assistance is appreciated! Thanks!

    Hi BDAqua,
Thanks for the suggestion. I'm a bit leery of trying that. I would think that if the driver was not installed, then none of my users could use the printer. However, both admin users can use the new printer. The list of available printers is:
    Adobe PDF 7.0
    New HP Printer
I also used to have Old HP Printer, which I  removed. Before, Users A, B and C could use both the Adobe PDF and the Old HP printers. Then, after I added the New HP Printer, it showed up in the list of printers for all three users. However, after I added the new printer, only the two admin accounts, users A and C, can actually print anything. Both users A and C can use the Adobe PDF printer AND the New HP Printer. But I get error messages with user B, for both the Adobe PDF printer and the New HP Printer.

  • I lost the lan ethernet connection of an older windows 7 pc to my 3 Terabyte router when adding a new local printer to the pc. How do i set this up again so the PC is recognized and can get to the internet again through the time capsule?

I recently added a new printer to a 2005 vintage PC that is running windows 7. It used to go through a router in my wifes upstairs office to the time capsule by wired ethernet (cat5) but when I added her new local printer thought I would network it, big mistaked, lost all my ethernet connection and she cannot get to the internet. Wireless not an option. How do i set up again the ethernet connection and i will only USB the printer locally this time for the windows pc?
Tried windows diagnostics, and besides telling me to reset everything and turn router off and on etc. I am in an endless loop.
Other Mac products are not impacted by this issue.

I see no direct connection.. a printer and the computer setup for internet are not related.
But it sounds like the router in the wife's office is now in the wrong mode..
If you have an existing main router replace the second router for a switch .. that is the easy way.
Otherwise you need to bridge the router if it has that option.. most do not. Or use wan bypass.. where you turn off the dhcp server in the router and fix its ip to match the range of the main router.. this is the hassle of using router as a switch.
BUT I am making a huge number of assumptions.
What I need is the full network layout.. a quick picture would help.
I need main modem.. main router.. (maybe same box or different).. make model and current IP address and how dhcp is setup.
I need secondary router.. if that is what it is, IP and settings.
I want the printer type and model. How it is connected.
BTW I much prefer to see a network printer plugged into the network rather than usb.. it is only a matter of sorting the IP settings and driver pointing to the network rather than local.
Or you should think of it as a broken washing machine and call the technician.. who could fix the whole lot in an hour.

  • Add a new printer to hp solutions center

I have added an new printer ( HP PSC1410) to my computer since my other one quit working (HP office jet 6500 E709a series). I cannot get hp solutions center to recognize the new printer. The printer has been added in the control panel and is now the default but solutions center won't recognize it.

    Hi there,
If you are no longer using the Officejet 6500, I would suggest uninstalling it.  You will then need to install the software driver for the PSC 1410.  By uninstalling the 6500, the software for the PSC 1410 and the Officejet 6500 will not be in conflict.  You can uninstall the 6500 by following the instructions located here.
Once you have uninstalled the Officejet 6500, then you will need to install the PSC 1410 by downloading the driver.  You can do that by going to your product support page on  the HP Customer Care website.  The PSC 1410 product support page is here. Once you are there, do the following:
    1.Click on Drivers.
    2.  Your operating system should automatically be detected and display in the dropdown list under 'Select or confirm your operating system and click Next.'  If it's not, select your Operating System from the list and click on the blue Next button.
    3.  Scroll down on the page and click on the + sign next to Driver - Product Installation Software.
    4.  Click on the blue Download button next to the download that says something like 'HP Deskjet and Officejet Full Feature Software and Drivers'.  You want the FULL driver - this is important if you want the Solution Center software.
    5.  Follow the instructions from there.
Let me know how that goes...
    Thanks!
    Tara

  • Adding new printer with ARD 2.2

I just installed a new printer in a lab of 27 eMacs (an hp 1200). I set up the printer on one of the eMacs and now would like to use ARD 2.2 to install the printer on the other computers. Where is the information about installed printers stored in 10.4? I copied the /users/username/library/printer folder from the eMac with the new printer setup to one of the other eMacs but it didn't copy the new printer into that folder. Is there a better way to do this? I thought that there would be a folder or file that stores this info. that I could easily copy to the other eMacs. Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Hi there,
Printer information is stored in /etc/cups. Here you will have several files containing printer information, such as cupsd.conf and printers.conf. There is also the ppd folder that contains the ppds for the printer/s that have been added.
I haven't tried this but I think if you copy the two files and folder mentioned above and the file/s from the ~/library/Printers folder, then this may be sufficient.
Of course the printer would have to be a network printer. If it is physically connected to the eMac then this won't be suitable. Sorry if this is obvious but you didn't mention how the printer was configured so I couldn't assume you were aware of this.

  • New print driver impacted existing printers - why?

    Hi friends,
Today I added a new driver to our print server which I have done many times before, only this time in adding the new driver, all other printers of the same manufacturer (Canon) stopped working, with the device on everyone's computer showing "Driver
    update needed".
The new driver was for an iDV-ADV C5250. The printers which stopped working are all C5051's. The driver was added but at this point, no other action was taken, the driver was not used for a printer (hardware hasn't arrived yet) so the very simple step of
adding a new driver in preparation for a new printer causes a major issue.
To resolve it on the Windows Server 2008 R2 print server, I selected any one of the existing Canon printers and set the driver to the new driver I added. Of course this did NOT work however then setting the driver back to what it was originally did resolve
the issue... kind of. ALL users were then required to delete and re-add the printer(s) on their computers. You can see this was not a popular fault.
Although I resolved it, I really want to understand why this occurred. Can anyone help? I really need to make sure this doesn't happen again. I thought maybe printer isolation might help but you can't set a driver to isolated until after it's added can you?
    Thanks.

    Hi Norton_San,
Based on your description, I understand that you add a new driver for iDV-ADV C5250 in printer server. However,
this operation affected all other C5051 printers (stop working). If anything I misunderstand, please don’t hesitate to let me know.
When an administrator updates a printer driver on a shared print server, the Point and Print feature automatically
updates printer drivers from the print server to a client computer. Some printers may share driver files across several printer models or across a family of printers. An update to one of these shared driver files will cause client computers to update the drivers
for any device that depends on the updated files.
    Hope this helps.
    Best regards,
    Justin Gu

  • Ease of adding new printer- what am I missing?

I haven't had to add any peripherals to my iMac for several years, but am now trying to help my parents (in another state) install a new printer on their eMac. I've always heard how easy it is to add and install peripherals on a Mac compared to a PC, but they're having a heck of a time and I'm having trouble talking them through it over the phone.
They're trying to install a Canon Pixma MP-830. They installed the software from disk and tried to print- nothing. I explained how to "Add A Printer" from the Print Utility, but they're it's still not showing up for some reason. Part of the problem is the "old dog/new tricks" thing- they're in their late 60's and are slowly adapting to the world of computing; another problem is that I'm trying to help them remotely.
My brother, a PC-guy, insists that if they were installing it on a PC it would be plug and play right out of the box. My parents and I are all getting quite frustrated with the difficulties they're encountering, considering it should be a fairly basic exercise.
Is there something we're missing about the supposed ease of adding a printer? It certainly hasn't been easy thus far.
    Thanks.
    iMac G3 600 MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

    Hello Dave,
There are a couple of things you can get them to check. The first is that the printer is showing as being connected to the Mac. Get them to open System Profiler and select Hardware > USB. All going well they should see the printer details on the USB bus. If it is present then we can move on but if it isn't then get them to disconnect the power to the 830 (not the USB) and then reconnect the power. The printer should now appear unless it or the usb cable is faulty.
    If it does appear then we can check the driver. After running the driver installer they have to restart. If they don't then that can stop the software detecting the printer. If the driver did install correctly then when they go to add the printer they should see it in the Default Browser view of the Printer Setup Utility. When they select it the Print Using menu should show Canon IJ Printer. If it doesn't then there has been a problem with the software installation. So I would get them to do the following;
    1. Open Printer Setup Utility, click on Printer Setup Utility and select Reset Printing System.
    2. Close the Printer Setup Utility.
    3. Go to Library > Printers > Canon and delete the contents of the BJPrinters folder.
    4. Go to Library > Receipts and delete the file Canon iPxxxx xxx.pkg
    5. Empty the Trash
    6. Restart the Mac
    7. Install the latest version of the Canon driver. Check the Canon web site to ensure you have the latest version. Do the restart when prompted. This is important.
    8. After the restart, go to Applications > Utilities and open Disk Utility. Run the Repair Disk Permissions option.
    9. Open Printer Setup Utility and click Add.
    10. Select the Default Browser view and select the Canon printer connected via the USB port. The Print Using menu should automatically change to Canon IJ Printer.
    11. Click Add to add the printer.
Hopefully this is not too much for them but unfortunately when things don't work then these extra steps are needed. As for your brothers comment - I can guarantee you that Windows is no better. The same problem does occur.

I have a G4 with OSX 10.2 and my printer died.  New printers only seem to work with 10.4.11 and newer - can I upgrade my G4 enough to use a new printer?

    Aha!
Well in outer Mongolia ASAP means something totally different and involves weaving tent fabric from camel hair so that has taken me a bit of time....  However if you have the patience of a saint and the compassion of Mother Theresas' more helpful sister then....
So it would appear I have the following supersonics:
    OSX 10.2.1
    60 Gb HD
    G4 dual processor 1GHz
Now the critical issue here is that I get the computer up to speed enough to be compatible with a modern photo printer - which I think needs to be 10.4.11 or even 10.5
Any assistance would be most gratefully and humbly recieved.

  • Adding my network printer to my new mackbook pro

I am trying to add our networked Canon CLC ir C3220 printer to my machine.
Tried adding an IP printer with the printers IP address, choosing both Line Printer Daemon - LPD and Internet Printing Protocol - IPP.
Cant get it to work at all, any ideas what I do?

If your C3220 has an imagePASS C2 print controller then the LPD queue name needs to be print and it must be entered in lower case.
If it is not using the imagePASS then try using IP > HP Jetdirect for the queue. This does not require a queue name.
