Adding a mask to a moving still?

I want to add a mask to a moving still picture -- the mask following the picture exactly (I want to highlight a particular form in the picture by making a semi-opaque mask around the non-essential part).
I can make a mask easily enough, but I can't remember how to get it to track with the picture...

not sure what was happening with your project, sometimes strange things do happen, but this is the expected way it works:
add a mask to an image and animate the image and the mask will move around as well. So if you masked an image to show only a man's face, and then moved the image around you would always only see the face.
Of course you can also animate the mask itself. so you could have a mask that moved around an image and revealed different parts as it moves. And you can animate both picture and mask at the same time.
Now add some animation to the layer containing the image and you can get yourself into a right mess!

AFAIK, the only way to do this is to write a system modifcation.
The BADI is executed only once at startup of the session, so that makes it merely static. (A strange point in time, I discussed it with SAP and they just shook their heads)
I had the same problem with some other F4-Helps and it was a big hazzle. From my experience, no straight answer.

Adding a mask in a datagrid

The first code block is an item renderer that is used to
place a button into a datagrid. The second code block is a class
that adds some interactivity to the button. The second code block
also contains two commented out lines where I have attempted to add
a mask to the button. My problem is that at present I am adding the
mask inside the button, whereas I would like the mask to be outside
the button (i.e. in the datagrid so I can animate the button to a
different state when it is clicked). I cannot figure out where I
should put the mask (I assume that it should go in the button
renderer) but have no idea where or how to place it. Can anyone
point me in the right direction?

The masking object would need to be in the canvas (outside of
the button).

Adding a mask for a sprite

I am having trouble adding a mask for a sprite, here is the
reason why:
After adding everything in the currect display list (i would
hope it is), the mask area for the sprite is bkack and covers it
rather than showing the content, and everywhere else the mask is
not located, the sprite shows. It seems to be showing the opposite
of what it should. If I do not use the mask, the sprites will not
show or exist at all, and with it they appear, similar with using
just a filled movieclip within the "other" sprite.
Here are the conditions:
I made a sprite with a given size and location (call it the
main sprite). Then I added two sprites to that main sprite, and one
of those two was the mask for the other. After that for the "other"
sprite within the main, i made a for loop and filled it some with
textfields using a database. Then, filled the mask sprite with
color. Also, the main sprite was sized the same as the mask sprite
so they are identical.

If you've just added an address to your account then it will be an alternate/secondary email address, a rescue email address can only be added by answering 2 of your security questions. If you already had one on your account then go to https://appleid.apple.com/ and click 'Manage your Apple ID' on the right-hand side of that page and log into your account. Then click on 'Password and Security' on the left-hand side of that page and on the right-hand side you should see an option to send security question reset info to your rescue email address.
If you don't have a rescue email addressthen you will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple to get the questions reset.

Mask is not moving with the set key frames

Hi Everyone,
Though I have been using this forum a couple of years now, I never felt the need to ask a question, up until now that is. First of all, I would like to take the opportunity to thank so many of you for giving me the answers hence solving my problem before I had to ask. In particular people like Bill Hunt and Harm come to mind. Thanks!
Now on to my question. In my project a have a track matte key on top of a video with a mask on top of it. A bit like that "24-Kiefer Sutherland-type" editing. This has worked great for me in other projects. However, in this particular one I have set motion key frames on the mask but it only starts moving way later than the key frames are set. Pushing the keyframes forward as a workaround does not give a nice result. Any idea what could be the problem here? I'm editting a 1920x1080 project and the mask has the same dimensions. The update for Premiere only mentions something about Facebook which I don't care about so I don't think a bug will be removed with that upgrade and I'm affraid updates will slow down my workflow (as was the case with the latest Lightroom update for me....)
I hope this makes sense to any of you.

Hi Ann, sorry for the late reply. I got the (hidden) message to update anyway, didn't know there was a "learn more" link which actually stated "general bug fixing" or something so I thought I'd give it a try. Updated PPro, restarted my computer but the problem with the mask remains. Here are some screenshots:
You can see my mask and in the effect controls panel you can see that the CTI is way past my keyframe but the picture is still way outside the "wanted" image, a bit later it all of a sudden slips quickly in place but of course it doesn't look nice at all (mind the CTI):
By the way, the image of the guy himself is getting smaller as well at the same time via a simple scale key framing. Here's a close-up of what I'm trying to do:

Problem with exporting moving still images

Hello.
I would like to create a sequence where the movie is made of still images (photos in .PSD format, reminiscent of a old-fashioned Polaroid photos) with added motion.
Now the problem is that after rendering and exporting (DV format, both interlaced and progressive) these moving-images somehow bounce or leap on the edges, especially inner white edge. It doesn't matter if I turn on or off the "optimize stills" option.
I attached short sample but it shows what I mean.
The file is 1MiB, 5sec, progressive, compressed with XviD with constant quantizer=2, resized to 640x480.
But all above modifications of exported file do not matter what so ever. It's the same with original export.
What shoud I do to improve fluency and smoothness of the movie?
I use Premiere Pro 1.5.

I'm a newbee...brand new at learning premiere pro cs3....so I should not give you advice but others here are very very good at this stuff. I like the effect of your sample video. When I first looked at it I thought only the bottom edge was slightly jittery, but I can now see that the entire image inside the white border does jump...the jittery-ness is the vertical (not horizontal) movement of the image about 1 or 2 pixels up and down as it is interpolated at certain points in time. The larger the screensize of the image the more noticeable it is.
I found this help file about keyframes and animation and interpolation...
Change transition settings
In the Timeline panel, click a transition to select it.
In the Effect Controls panel, adjust settings:
Edge selectors
Change the orientation or direction of the transition. Click an Edge selector arrow on the transition’s thumbnail. For example, the Barn Doors transition can be oriented vertically or horizontally. A transition doesn’t have Edge selectors if it has one orientation or if orientation isn’t applicable.
Start and End sliders
Set the percentage of the transition that is complete at the start and end of the transition. Hold down the Shift key to move the start and end sliders together.
Show Actual Sources
Displays the starting and ending frames of the clips.
Border Width
Adjusts the width of the optional border on the transition. The default Border is None. Some transitions do not have borders.
Border Color
Specifies the color of the transition’s border. Double‑click the color swatch or use the eyedropper to choose the color.
Reverse
Plays the transition backward. For example, the Clock Wipe transition plays counterclockwise.
Anti‑Aliasing Quality
Adjusts the smoothness of the transition’s edges.
Custom
Changes settings specific to the transition. Most transitions don’t have custom settings.
Maybe the anti-aliasing quality adjustment will help?
I put your sample clip into VirtualDub and tried a filter called "Field Bob" (compensates for field jumping in field- split video by applying bob-deinterlacing techniques). In the filter setting I tried "smooth" for both even and odd fields. It didn't really help.

Add 'animated line' to 'moving still'??

I've never done this before with Motion ... and i'm not sure where to even look in the manual:
I've done a simple zoom in on a map. I want to animate a railway line (simple red line) being built ... supered over the map as the zoom takes place. I haven't done much motion tracking ... where would I look in the manual for instructions?
Or perhaps I need to animate the red line on the map (still) first, THEN animate the zoom on the map (live-action)?

Your way is much better. I had drawn the line. Then made a matte that moved, slowly revealing the line over time. Then I exported the still frame with the moving line, making it a QT movie which I then re-imported into a new project, and to which I added a zoom. But the end result was a bit artifact happy. Your way is MUCH better. Thank you. I'm getting used to all the new tools in Motion. I haven't used the app for years. Love it.

In the last 36 hours my photos have jumbled within various albums. Random photos have attached at the end of an unrelated album, old photos have appeared again on Recently Added, some photos are missing but still on "collections". No date order

Within the last 36 hours my photo albums have turned into a real jumbled mess. Random photos have appeared at the bottom of my Recently Added album. In most cases it's a copy of a photo that was taken months or years ago so now it appears twice.. 200 random photos have appeared in an unrelated album. Some photos are missing completely. The date order is correct in some places and then it goes back and forth over the months and years. The "collections" appears to be okay. This morning when I went into the photo app About 50 photos that were permanently deleted 3 months ago reappeared on the Recently Added Album which I deleted again. if I delete these irreplaceable photos from the unwanted album it will delete the photo completely. Help please - this is so annoying and frustrating. I hate to think when I turn the iPad on tmoor row what else will have changed .

Quick Update:
I usually have my Mac laptop up with Messages running on it. As you know, it will receive the same messages you send/receive on your iPhone. I thought all my old photos would be there too, but they have all disappeared as well except for the last few.
Messages is supposed to archive all old photos to a directory called ~/Library/Messages/Attachments. On my mac, this was a 0 byte file that was created back in Jan 2014. As a result, none of the old photos got saved on my Messages app either. I looked at a Time Machine Backup and it has been the case since September (no earlier backups available). So, it's unclear how long this issue has been going on for my Messages app and how related it is to my iPhone problem.
In any case, if any of you use Messages, you may be able to recover your photos in that directory provided it didn't get trashed like mine did. I moved the file and created a new Attachments directory. Upon relaunch, Messages started properly storing new photos in there again.
Either there was a really terrible bug in the Apple software or something malicious has happened.
P.S. I'm running OS 10.9.5 Mavericks. There is a thread of people with this problem on Yosemite here:

This seems like a pretty seriously terrible bug. I will be talking again to AppleCare on Wednesday and I hope they can escalate this.

After Export, Moving Stills flickering

Hello,
I've shot a project in AVCHD, imported into FCP and exported through Compressor using H.264, 464 kps, Keyframe Auto, Deinterlaced filter added.
The still images (whether Tiff or JPG) sometimes flicker with black frames in between, or drop out altogether with just a black background.
I'm not sure what's going on here.

Shot on a Sony HDR-SR11, which is interlaced 1440x1080 HD. I brought it into FCP Studio 2 Apple Pro res 422 codec, on a 2x3.2 Quad-Core Intel Xeon Mac.
The resolution of the stills vary, most of them around 2-3mb files.
Some of the pics are dissolving fine, others aren't. And if I re-export, the same pic that dropped out before, may only flicker this time, or not at all. So it seems to me to be an issue of interlacing... but I don't know. I'm an editor, not a software wizard (sorry, I'm from the Beta tape days in news... I saw one of those in a museum last week.)
I really appreciate your help. Can't figure out why this is not reproducible over the same zone of the timeline, nor why it exports fine with short renders, but not the entire documentary.

I have Avira version 14 and have removed/added Firefox to allowed sites but still not working!

When I run Firefox it just churns away and expires. Sometimes, if I just leave it, after ten/twenty minutes it will run v, v slowly. I have uninstalled and installed Firefox. I have the most recent version of Avira [14] and have removed Firefox and added to permitted applications, still no joy. Am writing this from another Browser. Also if I close Firefox and then try to restart I keep getting the Firefox is running... Getting seriously annoying now. I can only assume that Firefox is not quite up-to-date with Avira's version yet. The other browser runs without problem.

hello AMc123, you could try to [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems|reset firefox]] to make sure that there is nothing wrong with its internal configuration.
firefox should just use the network resources that are provided by the system to connect to the internet. you could test if there is an interference by external software by launching your system in safe mode (with networking enabled) & running firefox then: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7

please note that it's the other way round - third-party software that hooks into firefox would need to adapt and correct bugs, since mozilla cannot fix bugs in a different code base. so you might also try to contact avira, maybe you can get a more detailed reply from them what steps should ideally be taken. thank you!

Original picture turns black and white when adding layer masks.

Creating a collage. Just placed a new object with a layer mask. Now I need to create a hue/saturation, levels adjustment layer and color balance adjustment layer all with masks. Ok, no problem, but when I do this, my original picture turns black and white. HELP!!! School project and has to be completed by Monday morning.

You haven't added a Hue/Saturation layer that's got Saturation turned all the way down, by chance?
It might be helpful if you'd capture a screen grab and post it here, showing your layers and channels panels. With a look at how things are organized knowledgeable folks here should be able to help or at least ask more direct questions.

Keeping a mask stationary while moving the object

Hi all,
How do I lock a mask in place while moving the layer it is masking through the mask and out the other side. I find that the mask always wants to emulate the motion of its object, which makes sense. I've been manually deleting the motion path for the mask or animating a resize that makes the mask stay in the same location. I know there must be an easy way to do it.

Howdy,
Put the layer in a group, and mask the group. This will allow you to independently transform the layer without affecting the mask.

Moving still images to a new location

I am part way through creating a slide show and I would like to move the image files to a new location on my HDD. I think there is a Move tool to do this in Premiere Elements 7 without breaking the links and having to reconnect the images however I cannot find the way to do it.
Can anyone help?

As Neale points out, the "Where is file ____ ?" message will pop up on the first "missing" file, and then PrE will help you locate the new folder/drive. For all Assets, in the same folder, once you find the first, PrE will then look in that folder and relink to all others in that folder. If you have moved several folders of Assets, you will need to do the Find, for each folder, and PrE will find all Assets in THAT folder. "Rinse and repeat... "
As a suggestion on how to set up your Project for the next time, I always create what will be my Project's root folder, with the Project's name. Below that, I will create one folder each for: Video, Audio, Music, Stills, Titles ( often use PS to create Titles as PSD files), and then point PrE to locate my Scratch Disks/Media Cache "Same as Project." Though there is a tiny performance hit, by setting that last location, it keeps everything within my Project's file structure. This allows me to Move, or, when done, Delete everything. With the exception of Captures, the Assets in each of those folders is a Copy, and the originals are still safely located on my NAS - just in case.
