Adding a name to Group in Address book

I am using Lion - I have added a new contact to my address book and put it into the group it belongs to.  It stays blue for some reason - then when I try to send an EMail to the group it tells me this new EMail address I just added is not a valid email address ( ... @gmail.com) and I know it is correct. Seems to happen alot, very frustrating.  What could I be doing wrong?  I have deleted card and re-entered as new and it still keeps happening.  Hope someone can help me.  Thank you.

It's DEFINITELY a bug! My wife's name is "Jac" and every time I correct the address book to be "Jac" with no surname (or no Christian name and "Jac" as the surname) with in a day or so her contact is listed as "Jac Jac."
It's not listed this way anywhere else. Her emails to me are listed with her full name, not Jac Jac.
I just checked and she was in my previous recipients listed as Jac Jac, so perhaps if I remove that entry from the previous recipients of all my machines this might stop. But it must have started somewhere!

  • Mail automatically adding last name to Contact in Address Book

Here is the problem. I have a contact "John" in my address book. No last name. I have his email "[email protected]" in his card. Whenever I send and receive mails from his email address (In Apple Mail) it automatically adds the last name "Doe" to the last name field in the address book. Is there anyway to stop this?

How many in the group? Some ISP's have a restriction on that. Check with your ISP.

I added a group to Address Book, but it doesn't show up in Mail's addresses.  Why?  In the past, any groups I added to Address Book or changes I made in Address Book showed up in Mail's addresses, but not this time.

  • Adding contacts to group in address book

Arghhh - I searched for Address Book in this support site and they said no matching entries!!!
So before I "upgraded" to Lion, I could drag a whole bunch of emails into a group in Address Book.  It now will not let me do that! (I hate Lion!)
Does anyone have a work-around for this?  I sent an email to 50 people and I want to create a group from these emails without importing them one by one and then manually adding each one to a group..
There must be a way to do this! (And of course "Help" for address book has nothing about this.)
    Thanks,
    Marty

What is your existing method for adding these contacts? If you are for example selecting a sender's email address in Mail and using "Add to Address Book" then you can't hook in to that process. If on the other hand you are working directly in Address book, adding a card and then fill it in, you could replace that with a script that would prompt for the necessary details, including group (with default Work Phone). You could even put a pretty front end on it with XCode.
Alternatively you could periodically run a script to periodically trawl for contacts with no assigned group and move them to a default group for analysis. I posted one here recently.

  • How do I isolate a group in address book - or other solution

History: I used my MAC to print Christmas card envelopes and wanted them to be addressed as "The Smith Family" but I do not want the original contact card to read that way. I set up a new "group" that was my Christmas card list and copied all the addresses over but, when I change the name it changes it in all groups.
Is there any way to isolate a group within address book so I can keep a different name on the same card?
If not, is there a field or way that I can print a different name than what is on the v-card? Another annoyance is that I used the "children" field but, when I printed an envelope it added them tot he end in a senseless fashion. I had to move all "family" information to the general comments.
    Thanks in advance.

There is only one set of data for each contact. A group is, effectively, a list of contacts, rather than a copy of a set of contact data. When you change a contact's details in a group you are making the change in the only copy of the contact's data.
One suggestion for address labels recently was to put eg The Smith Family in the company field, and at Christmas time run quickly through the cards marking the company flag - this could be easily automated in Applescript.
Even though it goes against the grain to have multiple copies of information, I keep the details for Christmas cards in a separate Excel spreadsheet. Address Book I use for email addresses and phone numbers.

  • BACKUP only ONE group from address book

One of my groups was accidently deleted from address book (I guess, anyway it is gone). I have a backup but I only want to restore that ONE group in the book. When I click on the backup file it says it will completely overwrite my address book. I don't want to do that.
How can I retrieve just the one group (which has about 150 addresses in it)? I do not know which of the names in my ALL list should be in this group.

The Address Book filing structure is similar to the filing structure used by iTunes.
You can't place a song in a new or existing playlist group without the song being added to the primary iTunes database first and the same with Address Book contacts.
As you know, deleting a contact from a Group or deleting the entire Group does not remove the Group contacts from the primary Address Book database.
You can't import a Group only from an Address Book backup file.

  • Any ideas why one address from a group in address book is left off emails all others show in address bar of mail?

I have a group in address book and when I either type first few letters of the groups name into a email form or open a new email form by right clicking on the group name in address book and choosing open new mail one of the addresses, always the same one, is always left off. I have checked the addresses and they are correct and when I use edit distribution list from address book the entry is shown in bold, which I believe shows its included. The address was added after the original list was made by dragging the address into the group, any ideas what I've done wrong please?

  • Cannot send email to Smart Group from Address Book

I created several Smart Groups in Address Book but I can't use any of them to send email. When I right-click the group name and choose Send Email, it opens my default email program (Thunderbird) and puts only the name of the Smart Group into the To: field, not the actual addresses.
If I try to actually send the message, I get the error that (name of group) "is not a valid e-mail address because it is not of the form user@host. You must correct it before sending the email."
What am I doing wrong? How can I get it to paste the actual addresses and not just the name of the group? I looked at the Edit Distribution List window and all the addresses are there.
    I'm using OS X 10.5.7, Address Book 4.1.2 and Thunderbird 2.0.0.22.
    Thanks in advance.

What is the exact message you get when sending fails -- does it say there are one or more invalid addresses, or what?
Having a name in the list without email address or possibly one separated by comma between last and first might result similarly in an invalid address, and Mail will likely refuse to send to any. But if the message is from the SMTP, that might depend on the provider's policies for that.

  • How can I add multiple addresses to a group within address book?

I realize you can add in addresses by going to 'Message' then 'add Sender to Address Book,' but what I'm interested in doing is within Apple Mail, adding multiple addresses into a specific group within address book. I've tried to do this using mail scripts but keep getting an error.
Is it possible to do this?
    Thanks.
    David

So far, FWIW all I've got is individual AddToAddressBook, then in AB itself, drag and drop one by one from the main list into the desired group.

  • Selected groups in address book

How to return the names (or ids) of selected groups in Address Book?

I got responses from other sources that Address Book will not return selected groups.
So I did this instead ( How to post a script without loosing formatting? )
    -- copy to clipboard
-- email addresses of selected group(s)
    tell application "Address Book"
set group_list to name of every group
set _groups to choose from list group_list ¬
with title "Address Book Groups" multiple selections allowed true ¬
    OK button name "Select Groups"
    set elist to ""
    set enum to 0
    repeat with ggg in _groups
repeat with ppp in person in group ggg
    try
set elist to elist & value of email 1 of ppp & return
set enum to enum + 1
    end try
    end repeat
set elist to elist & return -- separate groups
    end repeat
    set the clipboard to elist
    display dialog "Copied " & enum & " addresses to the clipboard" default button "Ok" buttons {"Ok"}
    end tell

  • Creating a group in address book from a group of emails

    Hello,
I would like to create an email group in Address Book from a list of email addresses that was sent to me.
The scenario:  I receive an email from our team manager for my son's baseball team.  Listed in the "To:" header in the email are the 20 email addresses for the parents.  I would like to copy/paste those emails or highlight/drag them into a new Group created in Address Book.
How do I do this without adding each individual email into the address book and then dragging each individual contact into the Group?
    Thanks,

I too am looking for a solution. I found this script on another thread that worked but would rather a more direct connnection.

  • Add receipients of message as group in address book

ok, this seems simple, but once again, Mac disagrees and makes it impossibly complicated. I typed in about 15 email addresses for a mass mailing I did in Mail recently, and I want to save these people as a group. I'll send emails to them all again in the future. here are the problems I've encountered:
    1. when I select all the addresses in the "sent" message header, and then select "add to address book," it only adds one of the addresses. ridiculous.
    2. even if I was to add them individually, I would then need to manually create a new group in address book, and then add each address one by one. again, ridiculous.
    3. one suggestion on here was to export my entire address book, then delete all entries, add the ones from the message, save them as a group, then re-import the original addresses. again, and again, ridiculous.
why is this so difficult? am I missing something?

figured it out. when in doubt, drag.
highlight the entries you want to save, open address book, create a new group name, and drag the entries from mail and drop them on the group. done.

  • When emailing a group from address book it opens individual emails....

When emailing a group from address book it opens individual emails for each name rather than one email with all email addresses listed. Have I set things up wrongly or is there something I can do to have a single email sent to multiple addressees via Address Book?

    Hello,
When addressing an email for this group, are you
entering only the name of the Group as the address?
    More info, please.
    Ernie
    Thanks for your reply.
Yes, it works directly in Mail - type in group name and all's well and lovely - but if I'm in Address Book and want to email a group it opens numerous emails. THere seems to be no way of opening Mail from Address Book and go straight to emailing a group.

  • Syncing Smart Groups from Address Book

Spent a lot of time creating a smart group in address book, only to find that iphone sync doesn't recognize "Smart Groups", only regular groups. Maybe the engineers can write some script to fix this little bugaboo to have the sync software recognize smart groups from Address Book and place them in the box so that the user can select the smart group and not have to sync the whole address book. Thanks.
    tjrmac

Yes. Please. It would be great if the syncing of smart groups were to be added. Right now with the large amount of address' I manage for business, it's important that I see the same groups on my iPhone.
    Please add.
