Adding accounts to Mac OS X 10.4.10 doesn't work?

I'm working on a donated Power Mac G4 running Mac OS X 10.4. I used Software Update to update to 10.4.10, but, after reading on this forum, I think this may be the problem.
When I add a user account with System Preferences, it works fine, but then I can't login with that account. It doesn't matter whether I add a password to the account or not. Even if I specify no password, it still asks for a password in the login window. No matter what I enter as the password, the login window shudders (wrong password) and won't let me login. I have one local admin account that I'm using (it was created when I received the Mac), but I'd like to add several more accounts.
I also tried repairing the permissions, but it didn't fix the problem.
When I try to logon, if I try three times, it prompts me for the "master password." Since this was donated, I have no idea what it is. I know it exists because I can see it is setup under System Preferences > Security. Any way to figure it out?
I don't have any CDs/DVDs (again, the computer was donated). Can I get the install discs without paying $130 for another copy of OS X? If I need to buy a copy, I'll probably wait until Leopard (October, right?)
It also appears that OS 9 is on there, too, if that helps anything.
Any ideas?
BTW, I'm not very familiar with Apples, but I've managed to figure out most of it so far.

Don't know. I suspect there'll be some cost associated with getting them from Apple. They will be the ones specifically for the machine. See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25784 for details. However, contacting the donor should be your first step.

I suggest getting the master password from the donor. If the donor can't remember it, then your best bet is do an Erase & Install and starting over from scratch (that requires the original disks). That way, you'll be configuring the machine to suit your needs and eliminating everything the donor did to the machine.

If so, what happens when you try to download? Is it a case of nothing happens? If so, take a look at the suggestions under 'Stalled Download' in this link:

Here's how to add a new email account in the Mail application:
To add another account, choose Mail > Add Account, select an account type, then enter your account information. Make sure the Mail checkbox is selected for the account.

When I move a harddrive with Bootcamp from my mac pro to my macbook, windows doesn't work

I have a 13" Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook and the topcase-keyboard doesn't work and so for some reason, it makes it impossible for me to install windows on the bootcamp partition. While the windows installer is running, it doesn't recognize usb keyboards. So I decided to install windows 7 professional on that same drive using my Mac Pro. The installation worked perfectly.
Then I take that harddrive and I move it back to my MacBook and windows won't start up correctly, stating that something has changed (of course!...duh).
Can anyone help me with a workaround for this?

I've posted this question to the Snow Leopard community because that's the OS I'm using.

With the Lion it is essentially unnecessary to resort to external driver disks. What's more, most of those disks are incompatible with the OS and should not be used. The system already carries a wide variety of printer description files (aka PPDs, which is what modern printing systems use as "drivers") for a lot of brands. And there was an HP printer update just two days ago.
Just checked in mine and did indeed find that the HP OfficeJet 6200 Series, with or without Fax, is covered with the latest update.
So just go thru the motions of creating a proper printer instance:
Make sure the Mac "sees" the printer on the network.
System Preferences / Print & Scan
Click on the + button on the left column
Select the appropriate type of printer, will use IP for the rest of this
Select HP Jetdirect - Socket, default for HP network printers
Type the IP address or look it up
Name the printer for easy identification on the print dialog
Let the Mac identify the printer model or manually choose the driver
Click Add.
Once the instance pops up in the list, can click on Options & Supplies for further config.

The latest Divx 7 + Mac OS 10.5.8 ? DOESN'T WORK! At least for me...

I hope somebody can help me here since I didn't find help on that topic somewhere....
I downloaded the latest Divx, installed it and when I try to open it it crashes without really starting up and a text message appears:
"The Application "Divx Player" was unexpectedly closes" Mac Osx and other Programs are not effected." (I have a german version of Leopard so I somehow tried to translate it but Im sure the most of you are aware of that text)
When I try to watch a video in the web with the divx web player, it doesn't work, too.
The web player doesn't open either!!! And thats the most important thing why I need DIVX for me!
Because as long as I have the Codec I can watch DIVX Videos still with QUICK TIME but watching a WEB video doesn'T work!
I tried so many things, deleting, reinstalling, deleting , redownload, reinstalling
deleting it with PACIFIST (an app that locates all files on the hard drive that were installed), redownloading and reinstalling. Nothing helps.

P.S: Ah yeah and what I forgot: It used to work. But then I upgraded my Mac to 10.6 and because my Mac was too slow with 10.6 i did a fresh install of 10.5 . I Updated it to 10.5.8 and from here the problem begins. It DOESN'T work.

I'm actually a little bit confused: So my situation is now: I have Perian and I have Divx installed. I had Perian installed before I installed Divx.
No what are my steps? Do I have to remove all files related to the DIVX package and download just the web player again and install it?
Or do I just have to delete the files in Library/Quicktimes related to DIVX and then download the web player and install it?

P.S. The problem is when I try to remove DIVX DECODER.Component and DIVX ENCODER.Component it always says: This file is in use right now and cannot be deleted.

Brand new Mac Pro.. CD DRIVE DOESN'T WORK!

I just set up my new Mac Pro yesterday, and the cd/dvd drive doesn't work. It worked once, when I was installing a printer, but it made a really bad noise, and now whenever I put any cd or dvd in, it doesn't even recognize it or react.
I don't know what to do.
I know I have a warranty so somebody from apple should be able to help me, but I can't even reach anybody on the customer support phone number.
Does anybody know a way to fix this?

Try depressing the SMC RESET button for 10 seconds, small round button under drive #4 in the rear (with unit unplugged).

Mac Mail: Check for new messages doesn't work

Hi,
In Mac Mail the setting at "Preferences -> Check For New Messages" I have set for manual and yet Mail still fetches emails when I haven't asked it too. I previously had this setting set to check for messages every hour but it ignored that setting too so I set it to manual but this setting is ignored. Ideally I'd like to check mail every four hours but there isn't a setting for that.
I'm running Lion and have IMAP email accounts.
Any idea how I can get Mac Mail not to ignore my Check For New Messages setting?

Thanks for the link. Well I never would have found that out without some help. I saw the IDLE in the IMAP settings I didn't know it was a kind of PUSH / FETCH thing. Anyway I've got it on manual now and only seems to get emails when I send one or press the button. I've only changed it a little while ago so I hope this is actually fixed.

Help, new to Mac.. iMac boot but keyboard doesn't work...

Not sure what happened but the mac would now boot to ask for password. The keyboard does not respond. Act as if it not paired. I boot with the OS cd and the keyboard works fine. So I not it's not a hardware issue.
One more note, I put a usb keyboard, and when I type the user name, it appears the keyboard has been remapped.
Anyone seen this?

Also, try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them. Cheers! DALE

Switched from Mac to Windows -- Now my Serial # doesn't work

I recently bought a new computer that is a Windows unit -- my old laptop was a mac. I went to install my Creative Suite Software, and found that my serial code only works on Macs -- is there a remedy for this??

Serial numbers are language & platform specific. So, you cannot use Windows serial key on Mac or vice-versa. However, you could get a platform swap done. Not sure, if this is applicable for your old version CS5.5 but it is worth a try. Order product | Platform, language swap

Installed Flash player on my Mac osx 10.5.8 but doesn't work

Call Apple and file a formal complaint, it's Apple that is not supplying security or patches to 10.5 users and expects everyone to be computer guru's.
16.5% of Mac users are on 10.5 and Apple just denies security and stability updates to force you to upgrade your OS or your hardware prematurely.
There is a massive botnet of over 600,000 Mac's and the prime location is on 10.5 Intel Mac's which they refuse to fix.
Appe's "solution" is for you to upgrade your operating system to 10.6 or even 10.7 (this will make your machine slow and won't run a lot of your software, another "problem")

IMO 10.6 would be best for you, the least trouble, but you bought a Mac for it to "just work" as your not "into" computers, your just a regular user like most Apple's customers.
So call Apple and complain, then buy the 10.6.3 retail disk and stick it into your machine and upgrade and cross your fingers and update to 10.6.8.
Backup your persona data off the machine first to a storage drive and disconnect.

Once your on 10.6.3 use software update to get to 10.6.8, then you can install Flash.

What worked for me was:
1. After installing new Roboform close open instances Safari and Roboform
2. Open Roboform
3. Open Safari
It shoud then automatically add the toolbar.

A check for update from within Roboform does not work. You must download it from the website (v 0.9.30)

Do not take it to a third party repair shop - downgrading causes problems and voids your warranty.
I had to unlock it so that i could really use it as a phone.
And that is the root of the problem. Unless you had your carrier unlock it, it was hacked and cannot be legitimately activated. Even if you don't care about warranty or problems, downgrading simply will not help an activation issue.

With Lion, all scanning is performed through Preview. Use Preview.
