Adding an S track for subtitles in the timeline

I have a Mac OS X 10.4 and am working with the Final Cut Pro 5 studio. I am trying to add subtitles and cannot figure out how to put in an S track that the manual says I need to have before I put in the text. Must I switch to DVD Studio Pro before I can put it in? And then how do I create the S track? Thank you.

I realized I needed to open DVD Studio Pro and work in that program. Once I did that, my question was answered.

    Eli,
You can reset a Password (lost/forgotten) set on your Mac using 'Reset Password Utility' available with OS X Utilities tool. With OS X Mountain Lion, OS X Utilities tool can be generally found on a local hidden Recovery HD Partition if your Mac has one.
To check If your Mac has got a local hidden Recovery HD Partition, start your Mac holding COMMAND + R buttons. If you hold the keys pressed enough and there is a local Recovery HD Partition on your Mac, you will be presented with OS X Utilities window.
Click the 'Tool' menu item and choose 'Reset password'. Terminal window appears. Type 'resetpassword' into it and press 'Enter'. Reset Password window appears with User Account Names available on your Start-up Volume. Select the User Account Name and rest is simple to follow.
One of the advantages of this method is that it does not require any Authorization method such as administrative authentication to reset a password.
NOTE: If your Mac does not have a local hidden Recovery Partition on its system disk, you can create one using Disk Assistant application available from Apple. Search for the Disk Assistant in the support area.

    Thanks for the update.
There are several Adobe Premiere Elements Forum threads about situation such as the one that you have encountered. Typically they are the results of some heavy activity in the narration track.  Some have found success in maneuvers between the Expert and Quick workspaces in versions 11 and 12 or Timeline and Sceneline workspaces in versions earlier than 11. That is why I mentioned that type of factor in a prior post in your thread.
If that is not working, then we are forced into the new project where the problems in the current project are not presenting.
I will do a search for the threads that I am recalling about your type of issue. But, right now all roads seem to head to the new project. But I would ask "Can you salvage this project by creating your narration clips in Audacity or a new Premiere Elements project and import them into this project, putting the clips on one of the numbered audio tracks?"
If the problem should reappear in the new project, please let us know including the details of what was going on immediate before the problem surfaced.
    Thanks.

  • One track of Audio in the timeline

I am only getting one track of audio in the timeline when I drag my clip from the viewer. In the viewer the audio is in stero, but when I drag it to the timeline it only one channel. Is there a setting that I change to get two channel of audio in the timeline?
    Thanks for the help

Right (or control + click) over in the patching bay at the left of the timeline and see if it sees both a1 and a2. Assign the one you can't see to a patch and that might bring it back.

  • Adding a Glossary button which doesnt move the timeline on !

I'm using Captivate 3. On each page there is a
backwards/forwards button. On this one module we've now added a
'Glossary button'. If the user clicks this it opens up a external
PDF file in a seperate window. That works fine.
Say they are at the end of a page , the page is paused as its
waiting for them to click Back/Forward or Menu.
However if they click the Glossary button this moves the
timeline forward as its a kind of 'continue' which is frustrating
as it then moves to the next page. I just want them to be able to
click Glossary as many times as they want and the program doesnt
    move on a page.
Has anyone come across this before ? Just want a button which
doesnt seem to move on ! Its not set to continue at all. Just set
    to open an external file
    Regards

    Hello P_SJ,
The way I would tackle this would be to create the button in
Adobe Flash (including the link to the PDF document) and then
import this into Captivate as an animation. The reason for me
suggesting this is because with Images and Animations you can make
the object persist for the entire project (Options tab > Display
    for > rest of project).
If you don't need the button to persist then you could just
disable the Pause after option (Options tab) in the Button dialog
and set the On success menu option to Open URL or file.
I guess that even if you did need the button to persist you
could just copy the button and paste this onto all the relevant
slides. That might work as well.

  • Tips for moving around the timeline

Trying to get the hang of this Premiere thing and use as many keyboard shortcuts as possible. I've skimmed through the online help and picked up some useful ones (like - + \ for zooming)
Is there any way to scroll vertically besides the scroll bars? The hand tool only wants to scroll horizontally.
Also, if I'm zoomed in, how do I scroll down the timeline? Page Up/Down only gets me to the next clip.
Any shortcuts to twirl open a track?
Lastly, is there any sort of gap detector? Trying to hunt down 1 frame gaps is a pain.

Colin, but what do you think about consistency between applications within a suite?
Well, I agree that's important, but you need to consider that they're still different applications with different purposes and different modalities.
After Effects is temporally-based, but it's also--and perhaps more so--spatially-based. What I mean is that, while you are concerned with timing in AE (naturally--it's for animating), you're also focusing largely on positioning elements in space. In AE, everything resides on its own layer, even if parts of a comp are separated by time.
In Premiere Pro, the focus is different. Yes, of course, you're positioning things spatially, particularly since PPro has gained more and more compositing capabilities. But ultimately, you're primarily concerned with positioning elements in time more than in space. When I'm working in an NLE--PPro or otherwise--I'm working with full-frame video 95%+ of the time, and I'm not moving clips around in a frame. However, I am moving clips around in time--before this one, after that one, etc. Therefore, PPro and all other NLEs are more "horizontally-oriented" if you consider time a horizontal plane as depicted by the time ruler.
So, no--I do not think that moving vertically in a Premiere Pro sequence/Timeline panel is so important that it should be the default action. I understand people want this--I will not argue that--but this either needs to be a) a secondary function, or b) we need to be able to customize scroll wheel actions to accommodate individual users. Either is fine with me, so long as the current behavior is not changed.

  • How can I make cuable sound effects on seperate tracks for use in the theatre

I need to make cueable music and sound effects for a play I am producing. I wonder if I can do this with FCE. The effects need to be on separate tracks on a CD so that the guy running the show can skip to the next track and push play. Help!

Wouldn't iTunes be more appropriate for this?  There doesn't seem to be any video involved.

  • Using Graphics for subtitles

This is my first time trying to add subtitles to a DVD SP project so please forgive me.
I'm creating my subtitles as graphic files because I want to add a little more design-wise than just straight text to them. As I understand it, you create them the same way as Overlay files which I have done. They look good in Photoshop but when I put them into the S1 track for my video the are off center and look terrible. My Overlay files for the buttons in the project look great so that is a bit confusing.
The other problem I am having is getting the actual subtitles to show up when the video is playing. I have read the subtitle chapter in the DVD SP manual and looked through this forum and others and I can't figure this out.
What I want to happen is this. On a menu that you access through the main menu you have 3 choices of the video to choose from.
    1. Music only version
    2. Spanish Language version
    3. Subtitle version.
When the user clicks the subtitle version I want the video to play with the subtitle stream turned on. I've tried different setting in the Button, Menu and Track inspector. What am I overlooking?

Sorry for the late replay on this but please see below...
Select the button on your menu that you want to use to show your subtitles with. As standard, in the target drop down box in your inspector you select the track you wish to display. AND then you select the advanced tab (also in the inspector). below the angle and audio drop downs you will see a subtitle drop down - make sure that the sub stream you want to be displayed is selected... Final thing - make sure that the VIEW tick box to the right of the subtitle drop down is delected. This will then force your subtitle stream to be shown only when that button is selected.
    Hope this helps?

  • Drag select audio tracks to the timeline

I have several clips I will be adding to the timeline that have 4 audio tracks. I only want the first audio track to go to the timeline. How do I do this?

Disconnect the connectors for the other tracks on the timeline...on the left side.  You will need to load the clip into the Viewer first.

  • Why can't I enable an audio track for recording? (It won't let me)

I want to record VO but PP won't let me...
On Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite in System Preferences:
    • Sound Input is set to C-Media USB Headphone Set (an Alesis usb mic...works fine for VO in Final Cut Pro 7)
    • Output is set to Headphone port
In Premiere Pro CC Audio Hardware Preferences:
    • ASIO Hardware is set to "System Default Input/Output"
    • I have also tried "C-Media USB Headphone Set but this, too, doesn't work
    • With "System Default I/O" selected, Output Mapping is set to "Adobe Desktop Audio" (only choice), and shows:
         • "Built-in Output: Headphones 1
         • "Built-in Output: Headphones 2
         • "C-Media USB Headphone Set: Front Left
         • "C-Media USB Headphone Set: Front Right
all four of these have a couple of square icons to the right.
In order to record VO, I first need to "enable track for recording" in the Audio Track Mixer. There are no in or out points set in my timeline and the tracks are not locked or solo'd or anything. So why can't I select the audio track I want to use to record VO? I click it but there is no response. I just want to know why this software is not doing what it's designed to do.

is I learn still around -? That was VERY HANDY!

  • All audio tracks disappeared form the Timeline, but audio still works

    Hi there.
I've been using Premiere for quite a while (I still have the 2.0 version), but this problem never occured before. I'm running Premiere on Win Vista.
I've been working on a project for a few weeks and eventually I got a version that was more or less final. Thus I tried to render everything a few times (Quicktime H264) but the render never succeeded because of an "API failure". Didn't manage to fix that, so I tried to render in wmv, just to check if it worked.
Well, it worked, but when render finished all the audio tracks had disappeared form the Timeline. I tried to find a solution on the web but couldn't find anything useful. No matters how much I scroll down and/or move the windows, the audio tracks just are not there. And the triky part is that I still can hear the sound when playing the sequence! I tried to add some empty audio tracks and Premiere apparently does it (it records it in the history), but no audio track shows up...
    Any solutions?
    Thank you

This sounds like a redraw problem, which is usually the fault of graphics hardware/driver.  Try checking those.

  • Anyone had video just not play when on the timeline?

Video is just not playing when pulled down to the timeline.  Seems to resolve itself for a bit after I reboot the program.

Using optimized media should be fine to work with given those specs.
Does the problem happen often? When you say it doesn't play, I'm not exactly sure what you mean.
One thing to check for is that the timeline scrollbar hasn't moved (vertically) so that the issue isn't just that you can't see it due to a scrolling issue. This has happened to me a few times -- especially when zooming in/out. I think it's a bug. But all you have to do is scroll up to get your clips back into view.

  • Deinterlace clips in the timeline?

When should the "Field Options...", "Allways Deinterlace" option for clips in the timeline should be used? I mainly edit AVCHD 1080i50 footage, and I would like to be able to export the end result both as 1080i50 (interlaced) and 720p25 (progressive), the first for TV and the later for computer use.

    Stavros F
Have you seen the following Adobe document and its section on Set Field Options for Imported Interlaced Video
Adobe Premiere Elements Help | Working with aspect ratios and field options
I would look first to consider the export settings for your intention of 1080i50 to 1080p29.97 or 1080i50 to 720p25.
However, for interlaced video, I would give the TV player's deinterlacing method a chance to deal with 1080i to 1080p.
Please review and consider and then we can weigh the pros and cons related to your video purposes and actual results.

  • How to unglue clips that are stuck together in the timeline

I've looked everywhere, I'm sure it's there but I can not find how to "unglue" clips that are stuck together in the timeline.  NOT break apart clip items, but get rid of those pesky things that attach the different levels of video together.  And BTW what the heck are those little claws called?
Thank you so very very much in advance!

You can't move tracks. Everything in the timeline has to be connected to the primary storyline at some point. Each clip that's connected can be connected individually so it's free floating and the connection point can be moved anywhere you want, or the clips can be strung togother and connected at a single point. You can Opt-Cmd-click to change the connection to a new location, but it has to be connected somehow.

  • How do you 'fix' samples in the timeline so they cant be moved out of sync?

I am audio editing imported final cut pro files with sound and picture. The problem i am having is when i double click on individual samples, i sometimes nudge them left or right - out of sync with the picture. After 2 days editing i estimate i have spent half that time trying to re-sync stuff manually - a nightmare. In Logic you can 'fix' all your samples so they can be moved across tracks, but not within the timeline. Any suggestions appreciated.

    Hi Mathrah,
I haven't found a way to lock the clips--I don't think STP lets you do this.
Here are a few things to consider:
    1) You might want to tweak your double-click mouse timing in System Preferences. I'm suggesting this because (at least the way I'm using the app) I've never run into this.
    2) You can always control-click/right-click on a clip and select "open as project" or "open in editor" --this would make sure that you aren't moving the clip as you open it.
Also, if you actually do want to move clips across tracks and not have them move in time, you can hold down the shift key while you drag to lock the clip on the timeline as you drag the clip up and down.
Now my last point makes me wonder if you could just always hold down the shift key when you double click on the clips to edit them (locking their horizontal position while you double-click)--this might be worth a try.
