Adding more space

so i have windows installed through boot camp and it works fine, but i realized i need more hard drive space than just the 5gb i originally partitioned, is there a way to add more HD space without uninstalling windows xp? or if i do uninstall it then reinstall bootcamp and all that, can i use the same serial my version of xp came with?

There is currently no direct way to do this, however there is an easy way to do things indirectly:
(1)Back up your files just in case.
(2) Download Winclone. It is free and find it here: http://twocanoes.com/winclone/
(3) Make a clone of your Boot Camp Windows partition and store in documents on OS X.
(4) Use Boot Camp Assistant to remove your Boot Camp patition.
(5) Use Boot Camp Assistant to recreate a new Boot Camp partition at the size you desire.
(6) Use the restore function of Winclone to restore Windows to the new Boot Camp partition.
Very easy and works well, did it myself 2 days ago.

  • Adding more space on a partitioned drive without losing data

    I have just partitioned my harddrive to put Windows XP on it ... but I underestimated how much space I needed. Is there any way to add more space on this partition with out losing any of the data on it? I tried using iPartition, but it's not free.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    No. You can only manage a Boot Camp partition with Boot Camp Assistant. Unfortunately, Boot Camp Assistant does not have a facility for resizing a partition. You would first have to remove it, then repartition to the desired larger size. Of course everything will be lost on the partition. You can use a Windows backup utility to backup your files then restore them after you reinstall Windows on the larger partition.
    If you were to use a utility like iPartition (and I don't know if it will re-size the Boot Camp partition) you may find that you can no longer remove the partition with Boot Camp.

  • New MacAir error states "your Mac OSX startup disk has no more space available for application memory"  All I have added is MS Office

    My new Mac Air states that my " Mac OSX startup disk has no more space available for application memory" and wants to force quit Safari.  I have only added MS Office to the computer and Carbonite.  Any suggestions?

    Select the icon of your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you renamed it) in the Finder and open the Info window. What value is shown for Available (space)?

  • How can I open up more space on my external hard drive for Time Machine?

    I have a 500GB external hard drive that I use with Time Machine. I believe I have half designated for Time Machine and the other half to use as an external drive to put whatever I want on it. My issue is that now my Time Machine back up needs more than 250GB of space.
    How can I make more space available on Time Machine and less for the external half (maybe split it 400/100 for example) or just designate the whole 500GB for Time Machine?
    Am I going to have to reformat the hard drive? I'm trying to do this in a way that I'm not going to risk losing what might already be on Time Machine...
    I'm not sure how well I'm explaining this. Hopefully someone can help.
    Amanda

    I would also suggest you get a 2nd, much larger hard drive, partition it if desired, move your data to it, and start a 2nd Time Machine backup on it. You can set Time Machine to alternate between the 2 drives by adding the new drive to System Preferences/Time Machine. If you want to make a copy of your current backup on the new drive, you can do that using the Disk Utility Restore tab. If you chose to do that, make the copy first since using the Restore tab erases all data on the drive or the partition.

  • Time machine need more space than necessary.

    Hi.
    Can anyone help. I have a two 1TB external hard drives one backs the other up. Until now it has been fine but suddenly time machine has decided theres not enough room even though there the same size drives. Ive deleted the backup drive and the time machine preferences but it still wont work. I have one drive with 930GB on and time machine says it needs 1.1TB of space. Why dose it need an extra 170GB. Help?
    Thanks

    Since Time Machine keeps copies of previous versions of things you've changed or deleted, it needs much more space than the data it's backing-up.
    The extra 170 GB is for "padding" -- workspace on the backup volume, and in case the original estimate isn't accurate, or more files are changed or added while the backup is running.
    #1 in the link Carolyn supplied explains this a bit more, and recomends that your backup drive be 2-3 times the size of the data it's backing-up.

  • IbookG3 wont recognize memory stick or burn disks after adding more memory

    I recently added more memory to my old ibook. Now when I put my memory stick in either USB ports nothing comes up on the desktop. I also can't get anything to burn onto disc. Any ideas?

    Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
    Have you tried removing the RAM to see if those capabilities return to the iBook?
    How big is the hard drive and how much space remains available on it?

  • Is there anyway of adding more memory to an iPod touch?

    Is there anyway of adding more memory to an iPod touch as I am running out of space.
    Thank you

    It's annoying because the amount of memory apple advertise is not actually all for you to use. I bought an 8g iPod thinking it would be enough but didn't realise 2g of the 8g is already used for you!

  • Adding more drives to my x-Raid

    hello,
    I'm running out of space on my x-raid, and need to upgrade it asap. right now, there are only 4 x 180GB drives in it. my question is do I have to use the same capacity drives to expand my raid? I'd rather go with a larger hard drives if possible of course, but need to make sure it will be able to handle it.

    Ok, as I've been reading more and more, I'm realizing that I know nothing about RAIDs on Apple I've done some on PCs but it was easier Oh MACs
    anyway, here's my situation:
    I have an x-serve raid with 4x180GB drives in the right side. Not sure why it's built that way, but it is, the way it is. I have only 25 GB of free space left. So I'm trying to figure out my best options. Originally I was thinking of adding 3 more drives 250GB each to the right side, and then merge them together with the main portion of my RAID. However, I'm reading now, there's a change I need to reformat my main slice which is not going to work for me. The type of the file system that I have is MAC OS extended (journaled), which as far I understand means it's HFS+ so I can't add more space on a fly and need to reformat my main slice?
    If the answer for that is I do need to reformat, I'd rather start building a new RAID on the left side (say 4x250GB). In this case as far as I understand I'd have 2 standalone raids, which is completely fine, I'm not looking to merge them together, as long as I can use them both for file sharing. So my question is "can I?"
    If I can, I guess I'd rather move some stuff from my main RAID to the new one.
    Advises, comments are very welcome!

  • All of a sudden tonight when I went to sync with my iTunesMacPro, I received an error message that the iPhone could not be sync'ed because it needed 6.25 GB more space

    I have a 16 GB iPhone 4S.  Tonight when I went to sync with my iTunes on my MacPro, I received an error message that the iPhone could not be sync'ed because it needed 6.25 GB more space. I still have 2.5 GB free. I sync'ed last night fine.  How could I need 8.75 GB (6.25 +2.5) more space on a 16GB iPhone.  I have added nothing but audio podcasts to my iTunes library on my Mac in the last two days and I have not change the sync setting on my iPhone.  Something has gone haywire.  Any ideas.  Mahalo, Oahu Guy

    I resolved this after some analysis.  Turnes out that iTunes was not recognizing that my music was already installed on my iPhone, so when I tried to sync, iTunes was attempting to load all my music a second time, and there was not enough room on my iPhone for that.  I did a restore from backup today and this appears to have resolved the problem.  I initiatied an iTunes sync and it worked fine.  Not sure where the glitch was.  Could have been in the latest update of the iTunes software.  Not sure.  Anyway, I'm good now.

  • IDVD 7.0.2 crashes when adding more movies

    I am using iDVD 7.0.2, because I have the old 17" Mac laptop.
    The iDVD crashes when adding more than one movie and trying to save the project.
    Any idea about that ?

    I'm assuming you really mean 20GB's or more of hard drive space rather than RAM memory .... only because I don't anyone on this forum with 20GB's or more of random access memory.
    This is directly from the iDvd Help Menu:
    Best Performance
    When you select Best Performance, iDVD encodes your video in the background as you’re working on your project instead of waiting until you burn it. This can significantly reduce the amount of time it takes to create a finished DVD. This is a good choice if your project is an hour or less in duration (for a single-layer disc). You’ll finish your project more quickly, and the encoding quality will be excellent for the amount of video you have.
    Best Performance encodes your video at a preset bit rate that produces great quality for projects that can easily fit on your disc. If you have a larger project that needs to be squeezed onto a disc, you should select one of the other encoding options.
    To check menus open the drop zone editor and check menu info.
    Motion Menus in general are not intended for long durations. Suggestion: Keep loops short and sweet (including any added audio).
    This too is directly from iDvd's Help Menu:
    The menus in a DVD can include background movies that play while the menu is showing as well as buttons that play video (called “motion buttons”). The total allowable playing time for video in all such “motion menus” in a DVD is 15 minutes. If total playing time is longer than 15 minutes, you will not be able to burn the DVD. You can keep track of the playing time for all menus in a project in the Project Info window.
    Hope this helps but if not just come on back.

  • Spry Content Slideshow (Wanderlust)...adding more slides

    Hello!  I know after hours of research this has been asked quiet a few times, in different ways, but I can't find an answer for this:
    How do you add more slides to this widget?  I need more than 4.
    I have tried to play around with the png images for the buttons (although I don't need the buttons - just the numbers.  I don't really want the buttons.) I don't know if I'm just doing it wrong or what, but nothing is working.
    I have looked through all sources of code, and have found nothing to help me!
    If you guys could help me figure this out, it would be appreciated! Thank you!

    Okay, I found the answer myself, and I wanted to post it for anyone else who is interested:
    I did this earlier, and it didn't work.  So I'm not sure what precisely made this work for me.
    First, I went to wanderlust-brown.css.  I went to
    .WLBSlideShow .SSSlideLinks {
    This is where I found a rule for "right" - I moved it way over to see if it would pop out (I saw something about moving this over in another forum)
    I did 100px;
    Then, I went back to add another article.  I'll post an entire section so you guys can see EXACTLY what you need to write:
    <div class="article">
                    <div class="photo"> <img src=
    "(YOUR IMAGE LINK)" alt="Orchids" />
                                  <div class="caption">Orchids</div>
            </div>
             <div class="banner">
                       <div class="title">CONTENT</div>
                <div class="subTitle">CONTENT</div>
             </div>
             <div class="content">
                       <p>CONTENT</p>
                <button type="button"><span><span><span>More!</span></span></span></button>
            </div>
          </div>
        </div>
    MAKE SURE you post this after the THIRD </div> on the 4th slider.
    That did the trick for me!  It kinda did something weird to my layout and added some spaces above my sidebar, but that takes about 3 seconds to fix.
    I hope this helps someone!

  • Advice on adding disk space

    I've got Arch installed on a 100Gb drive. I have separate partitions as below:
    /             7.6 Gb
    /boot       0.4 Gb
    /home   91.0 Gb
    swap        1.0 Gb
    Now I'm adding a new secondary drive that has 40Gb of free space, which I'd like to use for Arch.
    I need to free up more space for / and /boot, as I'm always bumping against the limit on those two partitions.
    There's a lot of stuff under /home that I could easily move to a secondary drive, but I'm not so sure about moving stuff from / or from /boot. I'm thinking I should have "mission critical" files on my primary hard drive.
    Also, I'd prefer to judiciously shift stuff from / and from /boot rather than trying to "grow" either of these two partitions. I once had a bad experience once trying to resize a partition. Yes, I had backed up my data, but it was still a big hassle getting Humpty back together again.
    Are there any directories under / that can safely be moved to a partition on a secondary drive?
    Same question for /boot: can any of the directories under /boot be moved to a secondary drive.
    Any suggestions would be very very helpful. Thanks.

    Here's a related question: if I want to copy /usr to the new partition, can I do so as I'm actually using my current installation of Arch? Or do I need to reboot with a live CD? I don't want some files to get left behind because they're in use.
    Note that I'll be copying and not moving, at least in the first phase of this operation.
    The procedure I'm planning to use is courtesy of Regor in this post, to wit:
    1) mount the new filesystem somewhere out of the way. e.g. "mount /dev/hdXX /mnt/new"
    2) copy over the contents of /usr there: "cp -a /usr/* /mnt/new"
    3) create a directory under that filesystem for home to live in. e.g. "mkdir -pv /mnt/new/usr/local/home" (The example puts it in /usr/local so the system won't be tempted to mess with it)
    4) copy contents of /home to the new directory: "cp -a /home/* /mnt/new/usr/local/home"
    5) create new fstab entries for both filesystems. e.g.:
    Code:
    /dev/hdXX         /usr   ext3   defaults  0 1
    /usr/local/home   /home  none   bind      0 0
    6) reboot.
    7) once it's determined that it all works right, boot some other media and delete the contents of the old /usr and /home to free up that space.

  • Will adding more Ram  help?

    My iMac is 2010. Over the last 3 - 4 months its started to slow down a bit. I  realize sometimes thats just the way things are but I am wondering if there is anything I can do to help. It seems that everything is a bit slow on startup/wakeup. It takes about 5-10 seconds for things to get rolling, that doesn't bother me that much, I can handle it, just pointing out that is different from 3-4 months ago. Once things get rolling its fine.
    iPhoto on occasion slows down, but again for the most part its ok. It's iMovie that really seems to lag. I realize of the things I am using iMovie is probably the most "powerful" program I am using , dealing with all the video files, but it has become very tedious to use. I've tried to "clean up" things a bit and that doesn't seem to really be helping. I am wondering if adding more RAM would help. Currently I have 4 slots filled with 2 GB of Ram. I think thinking of upgrading 2 of those to 4GB.
    I guess I am wondering if that would make a difference? I know in theory adding more "juice" will make things run faster but for the most part the computer does run ok on its own, its iMovie that lags. It it simplky because its a more powerful program and adding more juice will help. Or do we think something else is going on?
    OS X Version 10.9.1
    3.06 Ghs Intel Core i3
    8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

    Any thoughts?

    When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
    If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
    Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
    The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough. It is never necessary or helpful to post more than about 100 lines. "The more, the better" is not the rule here.
    Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
    Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

    Despite adding more storage = 20GB my devices tell me that I can not take any photos/video, why would this be?

    Because the issue is that you don't have sufficient available space on your phone, not that you don't have enough space in your iCloud account.  Adding storage in iCloud does not give you more space on your phone.
    You can check your available space by going to Settings>General>Usage.  You'll need to delete or sync some data off your phone to freee up more space.
