Adding support for AirPlay to Time Capsule network

Right now my Time Capsule (hard drive no longer in use) is connected to my cable modem and provides a wireless network for the entire house.  The Macs all connect via wifi, and the one Windows machine uses a previous model Airport Express to provide an ethernet connection.  The modem is moving about 15' away from the center of the house to a cabinet that will also contain my A/V equipment, and I want to provide a way to stream music through the A/V equipment without connecting a computer.
I'm thinking that I need an Airport Express connected to the A/V equipment to support AirPlay.  I could simply replace the Time Capsule with the AE, as long as the range of the AE is sufficient.  What would I lose in this configuration?
If the range of the AE is not sufficient, I think I could use the TC as a repeater.  OTOH, now I'm up to three base stations (old AE, new AE, TC); would that necessarily lead to poor wireless performance?
If the TC has more range than the AE, then I guess I could connect the TC to the cable modem, then go ethernet to the AE, although some posts here indicate that it may not be possible to turn off the wireless on the AE.
Any suggestions as to a reasonable approach?

Digging through the documentation I found some clues:
The 2nd generation Airport Express outputs 20.5 dBm max, compared to 20 dBm nominal for my Time Capsule.
The 1st gen AE runs either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz.
The Time Capsule and 2nd gen AE run both simulateously.
The Time Capsule has three ethernet LAN ports while the AE has one.
It appears that the 2nd gen AE could replace my Time Capsule (being used as an Airport Extreme) and adds AirPlay and the guest feature.
Am I missing anything?

If I remember right there "may" be a problem if you have a proxie settings enabled.
System Preferences/ Network/ Advanced/ Proxies. Can't remember which one or if it was an issue in 10.7 or 10.6. Just make sure their all unchecked and try again.
You might try a search in these forums for more information. Different fix's for different issue's.
    Sorry I can't help more.........

hi i would like to know how to extend the range of my time capsule wifi network(500G 802.11n) using an airport express. i have a double storey home and would like to extend range to my upstairs bedrooms.i have a time capsules network setup via a netgear adsl.i have a second imac upstairs which connects to time capsule wifi network (it is within range as it is directly abobe on 1st floor)
could you tell me how best to set airport express up to extend my wifi range?

    Greetings,
This is called an "Extended wireless network".
Read this article for details and steps on how to extend your TimeCapsule's network:

  • How to print from windows 7 pc on time capsule network?

I added a new pc with windows 7 on my time capsule network.  Existing network includes 2 macbook pros and 1 mac mini with boot camp and windows xp.  I have been using the windows xp with bootcamp on the mac mini and printing from it for a couple years.  We don't share files between the notebooks and mac mini, just internet access and printing.  My bootcamp side got too full which is why I added the new windows pc (yuk) for my windows programs but I cannot figure out how to get the windows pc to recognize my printer connected to airport time capsule.  I installed the printer software and drivers and connected it with usb and printed but when I connect the printer back to time capsule the pc doesn't see it.  Also, I downloaded bonjour from apple site but still no go.  Any help is appreciated.  As you can probably tell, I only know enough to be dangerous.  That's why I love my Macs, they just work!

The problem is you loaded the printer directly and now do not have it plugged in.. so delete the printer in the control panel.. then setup the printer again.. this time connect to it as network printer. The bonjour should make it available as a network resource..
Tell me if you still run into trouble doing that. You may need to load the IP of the TC manually..
Window7 has higher security level than xp.. and that can sometimes also cause issues.
Are you using SMB compliant names for the TC, wireless and printer??
Can the windows 7 computer get internet via the TC? Can you ping it?
Look up how to reduce the security level in windows to match xp.. I don't remember the details but you have to do some nifty footwork.

  • Computers on my secured time capsule network?  How did they get on?

When I look at my Time Capsule network, I see two computers connected to it as well as myself: workgroup and macbook c66e5 (or something like that).  I have Uverse and the TC has made its own network in bridge mode.  I have also set up a WPA2 Personal password.  The password is 19 characters long so I know it is very secure, yet somehow these two computers are on the network.  What's weird, is that I cannot see these computers or my own computer on the network from my brother's mac, yet I can see him.  Also, on my uverse network, I never see these other computers in the finder.  Do I have a security problem or is this normal?  Thanks in advance for your help!

I suppose access to the log is yet another thing apple removed from their toyland version 6 airport utility.. if so you will need to install 5.6.. which is a bit tricky but can be done.
Download the real utility.. not available for ML so the lion version.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Open the DMG file to see the pkg file but do not proceed further.
    Download install and run unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Drag the pkg file of airport 5.6 utility over unpkg.. it will unpack it to the desktop in a directory.. AirPortUtility56, drill down, applications, utilities and you will find the actual utility.. drag it to your utilies directory. Now you have a REAL TOOL not a TOY.. Log is under advanced.
Then you will know what is happening instead of living in the darkness.

  • Can I add a NAS via ethernet to the Time Capsule network?

"I'm a PC," but am sick of spending all my time with Windows/Network conflicts and am getting ready to take the plunge into the Mac world (insert applause here).
My router/switch is old, and I want "n" wireless capability, so my plan here is to go whole hog and buy a Macbook Pro, an iMac, and a brand new network infrastructure including the 2TB Time Capsule. This way I will stay completely within the Apple family.
I have a Netgear ReadyNAS 2TB that I would like to have available as a second back-up drive on the network. It can only be on the network via ethernet (LAN). It cannot be plugged into the Time Capsule's USB port.
Will I be able to add this drive and get Time Capsule (and even Time Machine) to "play nice" with it? Can I even set the Time Machine on each computer to back up to this drive?
Or should I just sell the ReadyNAS and get a USB drive that will work with the time capsule?
Finally, there are only 3 ethernet ports on the TC. Can I add a switch?
Thanks for any help anyone can offer,
    Shawn

It's reasonable to expect your NAS drive to work when connected to your Time Capsule network. However, it will be difficult for you to use it for Time Machine backups. Apple only supports Time Machine network backups to the disk in a Time Capsule.
It's easy to have multiple computers backing up via Time Machine to the same Time Capsule.
Or should I just sell the ReadyNAS and get a USB drive that will work with the time capsule?
That's up to you. Keep in mind that Apple still doesn't want you to use that USB drive for Time Machine backups.
Finally, there are only 3 ethernet ports on the TC. Can I add a switch?
    Yes.

  • I can Connect my iPhone to Time Capsule network, but I Cant get internett on it??

I can Connect my iPhone to Time Capsule network, but I Cant get internett on it??

Download 5.6 utility for Lion.. inbuilt version is hopeless.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Set TC and wireless names to short, no spaces, no special characters.. ie pure alphanumeric.
Lock the wireless to fixed channels.. only 2.4ghz matters.. as iphone cannot connect to 5ghz.
Try 6, 11 first then 1. I think bluetooth may be set to use lower channels.
That seems to have fixed it for most people.

  • I want to add more capacity on hard drive of time capsule. Can i add a normal usb driver? I will see it as an external drive in the time capsule network? It will work as fast than time capsule? Thanks

I want to add more capacity on hard drive of time capsule. Can i add a normal usb driver? I will see it as an external drive in the time capsule network? It will work as fast than time capsule? Thanks

Can i add a normal usb driver?
Yes, but be sure that the drive is formatted correctly for Mac in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
I will see it as an external drive in the time capsule network?
The drive will appear as a shared network drive, like the Time Capsule.
It will work as fast than time capsule?
No, the drive will operate at about half or 50% of the speed of the Time Capsule.

  • Unable to access certain web servers after creating time capsule network

Since creating a home network with Time Capsule, there are certain web sites or servers that I am unable to connect to. The browser attempts to connect, but always gets timed out.
One site, for example is a link from my fantasy football homepage: football30.myfantasyleague.com
I have no trouble with any other site, and am able to get to the address above if I connect my Mac directly with the Cable Modem, thus bypassing the time capsule network. Also, if I use my old wireless router, I am able to access the address without problem. I am also able to ping the address on my time capsule network,
I've tried accessing this site on multiple computers (both mac and pc) through my home network and using multiple browsers (Firefox, Safari, and IE). So the problem must lie with some time capsule setting (some kind of default firewall). However, I cannot find any setting on Time Capsule or Airport utilities where I could make any adjustments or view any prohibited site access.
Does anybody know why this particular site is constantly blocked when I use the Time Capsule as my router?

    hamish,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussion!
I'm wondering if either or both Airport Utility & Network Prefs have proper DNS server settings. Try this
    Launch Airport Utility.
    Select TC on left.
    Click "Manual Setup".
Select "Internet" from the toolbar above.
    What's listed for "DNS Server(s):"?
Try putting in these servers from OpenDNS [http://www.opendns.com>
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Click "Update".
Your TC will restart with the new settings.
Next, launch System Prefs --> Network Prefs.
Select the service you usually connect with on the left (Airport or Ethernet).
    Then click, "Advance..."
    Click the "DNS" tab.
    What's listed for "DNS Server(s):"?
Usually "10.0.1.1" will be listed first in gray. This refers back to the settings in the Airport Utility.
Nevertheless, it doesn't hurt to add the DNS servers noted above here as well.
    Click "OK" then click "Apply".
Now see if you can access those websites again.
    Cheers!

  • [svn] 4138: * Added support for SWC reuse.

Revision: 4138<br />Author:   [email protected]<br />Date:     2008-11-19 08:15:59 -0800 (Wed, 19 Nov 2008)<br /><br />Log Message:<br />-----------<br />* Added support for SWC reuse.  This isn't just reusing the bytes to<br />  lower I/O, which we were already doing.  This means not reparsing<br />  the bytes unless they become out of data.  The trick with making<br />  this work is validating each of the SWC based cached<br />  CompilationUnits at the beginning of each compilation.  When a SWC<br />  based CompilationUnit becomes obsolete or is removed from the<br />  library path, all the CompilationUnit's, which depended on it, are<br />  forced to be recompiled.<br /><br />  Note: bugs with the SWC reuse logic often show up as errors claiming<br />  that type foo is not an instance of type foo.  This most likely<br />  means that foo was reloaded, but something that depended on foo<br />  wasn't reloaded.  Please file bugs for any errors like this and give<br />  me a heads up.<br /><br />  Flex Builder has logic to take advantage of this change in the case<br />  of application compilations, but it will need to be updated to take<br />  advantage of SWC reuse in the case of library compilations.  The<br />  biggest benefit of this change will be seen when all the libraries<br />  and applications in a workspace share a SwcCache.<br /><br />  Updates to the performance testsuite to enable it to take advantage<br />  of these changes will follow.<br /><br />tests Passed: checkintests, performance testsuite, fcsh unit tests<br /><br />Needs QA: YES<br /><br />Needs DOC: NO<br /><br />API Change: Yes - a few changes to the OEM compiler API<br /><br />Reviewer: Pete and Darrell<br /><br />Code-level description of changes:<br /> <br />  modules/asc/src/java/macromedia/asc/util/ContextStatics.java<br /><br />    Added clearUserDefined(), which allows Flex to use one<br />    ContextStatics instance when compiling multiple libraries and<br />    applications.  If we didn't clear out the userDefined Map,<br />    definitions from one compilation could potentially spill over into<br />    others where they might not be defined or might be defined<br />    differently.<br /><br />  modules/compiler/src/java/flex2/tools/oem/Application.java<br />  modules/compiler/src/java/flex2/tools/oem/Library.java<br /><br />    Renamed instance variable "configuration" to "oemConfiguration".<br /><br />    Renamed method param "OEMConfiguration c" to "OEMConfiguration<br />    localOEMConfiguration".<br /><br />    Renamed local variable "OEMConfiguration c" to "OEMConfiguration<br />    tempOEMConfiguration".<br /><br />    Removed a bunch of duplicate code from recompile().<br /><br />    Added support for reporting the start and end of a "full" compile.<br />    Before full compiles were reported as "inactive".<br /><br />    Added support for using LibraryCache's new perCompileData<br />    variable.<br /><br />    Modified Library.link() to use a SwcDynamicArchive instead of a<br />    SwcWriteOnlyArchive when the file name is known.  This allows us<br />    to reuse the compilation units in the archive for subsequent<br />    compilations.<br /><br />  modules/compiler/src/java/flex2/tools/oem/LibraryCache.java<br /><br />    Added contextStatics variable and accessors.<br /><br />  modules/compiler/src/java/flex2/tools/oem/internal/OEMReport.java<br /><br />    Updated to leverage CompilationUnit.hasAssets() and to reflect<br />    change in type of CompilationUnit's inheritance, namespaces,<br />    types, and expressions.<br /><br />  modules/compiler/src/java/flex2/tools/oem/internal/OEMUtil.java<br /><br />    Modified areSwcFileChecksumsEqual() to ignore timestamp changes<br />    with catalog.xml and library.swf.  When we are reusing cached<br />    SWC's, the catalog.xml and library.swf are updated each time we<br />    save the SwcDynamicArchive, but we don't want to reload the SWC<br />    from disk, because all the compilation units represented by<br />    catalog.xml should be cached.  If any of the cached<br />    CompilationUnit's becomes out of data,<br />    CompilerAPI.validateCompilationUnits() will handle removing the<br />    cached CompilationUnit, which will cause it to be reloaded from<br />    disk.<br /><br />  modules/compiler/src/java/flex2/compiler/swc/SwcCache.java<br /><br />    Renamed "swcs" to "swcLRUCache" to reduce confusion with other<br />    variables named "swcs".<br /><br />    Added tracking of removed and updated cached Swc's.<br /><br />    Removed cleanExtraData().<br /><br />  modules/compiler/src/java/flex2/compiler/swc/SwcArchive.java<br /><br />    Added generics to getFiles().<br /><br />  modules/compiler/src/java/flex2/compiler/swc/SwcGroup.java<br /><br />    Added tracking of obsoleted scripts.<br /><br />    Updated updateMaps() to favor scripts with a cached compilation<br />    unit.<br /><br />  modules/compiler/src/java/flex2/compiler/swc/SwcScript.java<br /><br />    Replaced misc with compilationUnit.<br /><br />    Added toString() to aid with debugging.<br /><br />  modules/compiler/src/java/flex2/compiler/swc/SwcDirectoryArchive.java<br /><br />    Added generics to getFiles().<br /><br />  modules/compiler/src/java/flex2/compiler/swc/SwcPathResolver.java<br /><br />    Updated resolve() to prevent resolving foo.swc$bar.css to<br />    blah.swc$bar.css, which was causing the framework.swc<br />    defaults.css's timestamp to be compared with the charting<br />    defaults.css timestamp.  Grrr.<br /><br />  modules/compiler/src/java/flex2/compiler/swc/Swc.java<br /><br Significantly refactored validateCompilationUnits().  It now<br />    validates sources from the CompilerSwcContext and in the case of<br />    library compilations, it validates the included classes.  It also<br />    builds up a backwards dependency map, so we can remove all the<br />    dependencies when a source is removed.  This made the<br />    DependencyGraph usage unnecessary.  The DependencyGraph usage also<br />    happened to be flawed, because it really should have been looping<br />    each time a potential "type" or "expression" source was removed<br />    until no new sources were removed.  I actually tried implementing<br />    this and it was incredibly slow.<br /><br />    Added dependentFileModified() helper method.<br /><br /> WatcherSetupUtil to the same as the mxml<br />    document.  Now that we validate sources in the ResourceContainer,<br />    any changes of Bindable metadata in dependent sources will cause a<br />    recompile.  The use of System.currentTimeMillis() was a hack.<br /><br />  modules/compiler/src/java/flex2/compiler/css/StyleModule.vm<br /><br />    Removed unused import.<br /><br /> • Time Capsule: "Network name no longer available" error when copying files

    Hi!
I've come upon this error when trying to copy files from my PC to Time Capsule:
    "Network name no longer available".
This seems to happen only on folders that have image sequences in them (.sgi image sequences).
I was planning on transferring the content of my PCs hard drive to Time-Machine in order to smooth out the migration from my old PC to my new MBP but I have to say that I'm a little less confident about using TC as a storage space for my valuable files.
Is there a work around for this? I have tons of folders with .sgi image sequences and it would be a real shame not to be able to transfer them to Time Capsule.
    Please help!

Hi… I don’t think there should be any such limitation for the file transfer wirelessly. However it can be issue, as you wired is connect at a speed of 100 Mbps and wireless connects to the max at 54 Mbps. Try to upgrade the firmware. Also try reducing Fragmentation Threshold and RTS threshold by 40 each under advance wireless settings on the router. Go to www.speedguide.net, and download the TCP optimizer. Try reducing the MTU of your wireless adapter. Please Revert Back, even if this resolves your issue.

  • Extend present Time Capsule network with an Extreme

I currently have a wireless network in my house using a Time Capsule that is connected to the modem in the office. I bought a Blu-Ray player that is connected to my TV in the living room, and if I plug it directly in to a router using an ethernet cable, I can stream movies to my TV. Sooooo.....I found the old Airport Extreme I used before I bought the Time Capsule, and I would like to use it to extend my network to the living room. I have the Extreme plugged in right now by the BLu-Ray player, and the name I used for the old Extreme network is showing up on my laptop, as well as the new Time Capsule network. The Extreme is blinking amber. What do I need to do to just add this Extreme as an extension of my network so I can connect it to my Bu-Ray via a ethernet. Thanks.

Since you have the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), you can take advantage of the "extend a network" feature.
o If practical, place the base stations in near proximity to each other during the setup phase. Once done, move them to their desired locations.
o Open AirPort Utility and select the base station that will connect to the Internet.
o Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
o Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
o Next, select the base station that will extend this network, and choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
o Enter the base station network and base station password is necessary.
o Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.

  • Some of these services may be being used for hacking my Time Capsule?

    Hi,
I was scanning services from a connected PC on my network but not directely in my time capsule and I picked these services below:
    NetBIOS Session Services
    SMB directy over IP
    AFP over TCP
    Apple Airport WAP Administration
SecureNet Pro Sensor https management server or apple airport admin
My question is: Some of these services may be being used for hacking my Time Capsule?
Attached SIMPLE DESIGN FROM MY HOME NETWORK,

Ok the TC did seem to get the raw end of the deal.. (I am not sure what the other end is.. cooked maybe??)
What model is it.. Gen1 or Gen2 are very prone to issue of overheat and eventual power supply failure.
See internet for loads of info on the issue.
    Here is my version.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair
You can open the TC and remove the disk.. if it is still operational you can get your files.. Gen1 Hitachi drives are still going strong.. it is the power supply that goes.
    Gen3 is a different issue..
Tell us your model number from the rubber foot label.. A1xxx??
Decide if repair is worthwhile.. with a bit of DIY a repair or replacement to the power supply can be made.
There is no space in the TC for dual drives.
And if the power supply goes anyway there is no recovery apart from pulling it apart.

  • Time Capsule Network Freezes and Locks Up

I have been having major streaming issues to my Apple TV for a few months now.
Basically, the streaming performance is poor, and after 20 or 30 minutes, the movie that is playing freezes, then the entire wireless network created by the Time Capsule stops working. Anything hooked up via Ethernet however still does work. Only the Time Capsule Network fails. This happens every time I reboot the Time Capsule. I have also started over and reset the device.
I had Apple replace the Time Capsule (gen I, 500 gig), and had my cable company replace my modem. Neither one of these things solved the problem at all. It is still happening.
I have the cable modem running into the Time Capsule, then the Time Capsule runs into a router that sends wired ethernet through various points in the house (although at this time only 1 compute is still hard wired).
I have no idea what is causing this. Could this be an Apple TV issue? Why would it cause the entire network to crash?

The issue was resolved ages ago but I don't remember how....... sorry.
