Adding text string to existing cell contents in Numbers '09

Hi
First up ... I have read the manual (user guide and formula guide) and searched the forum. I have REALLY tried to get this simple thing to work... but I'm doing something wrong...
2 columns
A B
file1 .aiff
File2 .aiff
file3 .aiff
file4 .aiff
I want to combine the two columns ... I don't care if I append the string ".aiff" to the values in column A, or create a new column C that looks like this
C
file1.aiff
file2.aiff
file3.aiff
I have tried CONCATENATE by entering a formula in an empty cell at the bottom of column A but it just concatenates one row. I have attempted to create column C and enter formulas like =A&" "&B (from posts here) in cells all over the place... but they just turn into cell text strings. I've read that I just have to paste a formula into a column header, enter a formula then auto fill....
Clearly many ways to do this ... but never a "thanks that worked"... the threads just end.
Can someone set me straight? That is what function/formula to use and where to enter it... and how if there's a trick I'm missing.
I'd do this concatenation manually if there were't thousands of entries to do!

Hi Lee,
You wrote:

That's the way formulas work. The formula determines the content of the cell that contains the formula. You need to place the formula into every cell where you want to get that result.
Fortunately, that can be done pretty efficiently.
If ALL of the cells in column B contain the same extension (.aiff), you can replace that with
=A&".aiff"
Enter the formula in the first 'regular' (ie. non-header) cell in column B and Fill down (see below) through the rest of the column.
If some cells in B contain different values, you'll need to do the concatenation in column C.
=A&B (see note below regarding your similar formula)
or
=CONCATENATE(A,B)
As above, enter the formula in the first non-header cell in column C and Fill down.
To fill down through a long column:
Click any cell to show the row and column reference tabs.
Click on the column reference tab (B or C) to select the whole column.
Command-click on each of the header cells above the formula to remove it from the selection.
When the formula is in the top cell of the selection, go Insert > Fill > Fill down.
Regards,
Barry
Note re your formula: =A&" "&B
With 'file1' in column A and '.aiff' in column B the result of this formula will be file1 .aiff
As I thought you probably did not want the space between the filename and the extension, I removed it from the formula:
=A&B
Result: file1.aiff

  • How to retrieve newly added text strings from ResourceBundle through EL ?

    I have stored the properties in a database and getting i18n property values from Java code and EL-expressions.
    New key-value pair are added to the resource bundle and by doing clearcache() and getbundle() the new property values are successfully retrieved from Java code.
    However, I have problems to get the new property value from EL without a restart of glassfish.
    What are the steps to get the new property values through EL without restart?
    I am using JDK 1.6.0-18, JSF 2.0 and GlassFish v3 (build 74.2)

    If you are using Java 6 then there is a [ResourceBundle.Control|http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/api/java/util/ResourceBundle.Control.html] class. I don't have any personal experience with it but the documentation does mention caching and control thereof.

  • Adding text to a string

    Hi
    I am new to Numbers (I am using 09 on OS X 10.6.8)  - I need to add a couple of characters to the end of a text string in one cell, if the condition in another cell is true.
    A1 contains a persons name  A2 can contain the formula I am seeking A3 will contain a date (or not)
    So what I would like is,for a formula to detect if A3 contains a date - then if it does, to add the specified text (lets say a 'space' and '§') to the END of the persons name in A1.
    This is a work around for the often asked conditional format rule to change text colour if . . .
    Hope you can help
    C

    Hi Colin
    Formulas can change only the content of the cell containing the formula. A cell may contain an entered value or a formula, but not both, so unless the names in A2 have been generated by a formula in that cell, you cannot use a formula to append additional text to them.
    But you've said this is "a work around for the often asked conditional format rule to change text colour if . . ."
    Conditional format rules compare the value in a cell to a fixed value or to the value in another cell. Rather than changing the value in to cell to be formatted, you could change the value in another cell to match the value in the target cell under specific conditions, then use a comparison of that cells value to the value of the target cell's own value to trigger the conditional format.
    Here's a sample.
    The rule shown is for A4. The other two cells with names in column A use the same rule, but with the column C comparison cell in their own row. Column C, shown with yellow fill, may be hidden.
    C2 contains the formula below, which is Filled down to the other cells in column C:
    C2: =IF(LEN(B2)>0,A2,"")
    Note that this formula will detect any type of data entered into B2, not just a date.

  • TableView auto resize columns based on header text width or cell content

    Is there a method on the tableview or tablecolumn to automatically resize based on the content of the hearder or data?
    If not what approach can used used with JavaFX to calculate the string width based on the current font?

    The table column size is inconsistent, I set the columns in the table view and the items in the initialize method. I execute a service and task from a button action that loads data into the list, if I don't reset the columns in the table view in the succeed method then each column is the same width regardless of the content in the cells. If I do reset the table columns in the succeed method then the columns are resized based on content.
    I don't think it should be a requirement to reset the columns just to get the column widths to set based on the content in the cells. Is there a method on the table column or view that will resize the cells based on the cell content? I would prefer the largest value; column header content or the longest cell content for a column.

  • Adding New Image and Text to an Existing Page Created with Tables

    Working in DW 5.5
    I'm trying to add a new image/link and small amount of text to an existing web page that was created with tables and centered.  I am using AP Divs. One for the image and one for the text.  Everything functions fine, but I can't get the new items to anchor and re-center with the rest of the page.  I am not able to overide the "Absolute Positioning".  I've tried different solutions from various tutorials but I can't seem to make them work with tables.
    The added items are a Facebook button and text.
    Go to:  http://www.sugarhollowfarms.net/index.html  to see the problem.
    Please help. I'm not that experienced.

    Make a back-up of the page first before you implement the changes below!
    Take the below bit of code from <div id="FBlogo">...... to.......... </div> <!-- end FBlogo -->
    and insert it directly after the opening div tag FWTableContainer and before your opening table tag (see position below):
    <div id="FWTableContainer209091602">
    <div id="FBlogo"><a href="#"><img src="images/fb.png" alt="fb" width="62" height="62" onClick="MM_openBrWindow('http://www.facebook.com/SugarHollowFarms','facebook','toolbar=yes,location=yes,status=yes, menubar=yes,scrollbars=yes,resizable=yes,width=1000,height=800')"></a>
    <p class="bodytext"><strong>Join us<br>
    on Facebook</strong></p></div><!-- end FBlogo -->
    <table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="800">
    Then add - position: relative; - to the FWTableContainer css (as shown below):
    #FWTableContainer209091602 {
        /* The master div to make sure that our popup menus get aligned correctly.  Be careful when playing with this one. */
        position:relative;
        margin:auto;
        width:800px;
        height:600px;
        text-align:left;

        background-image: url(images/homepage_new3.jpg);
        border: medium solid #336600;
        position: relative;
    Amend the css for FBlogo to as below:
    #FBlogo {
        position:absolute;
        left:700px;
        top:380px;
        width:91px;
        z-index:1;
        text-align: center;
    Amend the css for bodytext as below:
    .bodytext {
        font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
        font-size: 11px;
        line-height: 13px;
        margin: 0;

  • Adding text to indesign pages with specific font ,size,and color using javascript

    Hello,
    Using javascript i am able to add some text to each page of an indesign file.
    myNewText = "SOME TEXT"
    myTextFrame = myPage.textFrames.item(0);
    tempframe = myTextFrame.contents;
    myTextFrame.contents =  myNewText + tempframe ;
    But i want to specify the font used,size and color for that text.
    When i try the code mentioned in indesign javascript scripting guide
    myNewText .appliedFont = app.fonts.item("Times New Roman");
    myNewText .fontStyle = "Bold";
    nothing gets changed and font family already used stays the same.
    How can i do that only for the added text and not for the whole content?I dont want to add the text to a new text frame I want to append it to the existing text frame.
    And is there a way to specify font size too?
    thank you

    There's a mixup going on here. Let's see if we can sort out some of it
    at least.
    If you just want to add new text to an already existing text frame,
    that's easy:
    myTextFrame.contents += "Hello";
    But if you want the new text to have unique formatting, it's a little
    more complicated.
    There are two simple ways to do it, I think:
    1. Create a temporary text frame, as you have done, and add the text,
    and format everything in there. Then move() that formatted text to the
    end of myTextFrame and delete the temporary frame:
    tempFrame = app.activeDocument.textFrames.add();
    tempFrame.contents = "New Text";
    tempFrame.paragraphs[0].appliedFont = app.fonts.itemByName("Times New
    Roman"); // etc...
    tempFrame.paragraphs[0].move(myTextFrame.insertionPoints[-1],
    LocationOptions.AFTER);
    tempFrame.remove();
    2. The other option, is to add the text directly to your textFrame. But
    if you want to format only that text, you have to store where the text
    started:
    myTextFrame = app.selection[0];
    firstInsertionPoint = myTextFrame.insertionPoints[-1].index;
    myTextFrame.contents += "New Text";
    myAddedText =
    myTextFrame.characters.itemByRange(myTextFrame.insertionPoints[firstInsertionPoint],
    myTextFrame.insertionPoints[-1]);
    myAddedText.appliedFont = app.fonts.itemByName("Trajan Pro"); // etc.
    What you've done in your sample script, however, is to try to apply a
    font to a simple JavaScript string. It won't work, but the way you did
    it, it won't throw an error either, because in fact you've created a new
    property of your string. (myString = "Hello"; myString.appliedFont =
    "Times"; // myString now has a Javascript property called appliedFont --
    but that's nothing to do with InDesign!)

  • Is it possible to use wildcards to match cell contents in an if statement?

    I need to return a ID along with some other information on a page by page basis, so that the information comes out linked by position.  I use a couple of loops and if statements to navigate through the document.  I am able to use exact matches of cell contents which is fine when the contents doesn't vary.  But the IDs, though they have a similar pattern, are all different. In a menu driven search, I am able to find what I need with '150^9^9^9^9^9-^9^9^9' But when I try putting this (or any number of [0-9], *, ? combinations) it fails.  Is it possible to use wildcards?  The symbol used for the match (==) makes me suspect that it is not possible and that only literal, exact matches will work.  But I wanted to check with the experts before giving up.
    Thanks
    pcbaz

    Thanks for the input.  You're right, a GREP search is much more efficient.  But what I'm trying to do and the circumstances here don't allow me, I think,  to go that route. I am trying to generate a list of values coming from several textframes on a single page and have them come out so that I can tell which values belong together.
    I'm using an inherited document with masters that were created 'manually';  the index numbering for textframes and tables is random. I navigate through the pages, looping through textframe indices asking ' does this textframe exist?' If so, I ask if it is a table -- if no, it is a simple textframe and I ask about the ID, if yes, I ask if the contents of cell (0,0) (invariant position and contents) are equal to the table I want..  I am sending the ID and other pieces of information from the table to one row of a new table on a new page.  So the ID and other information from a single page are linked by being in the same row.
    I know this a little 'off-normal' -- I'm using the search to navigate through the document and find things by location the way you do with a spreadsheet.  I have devised a work-around that helps me get around the fact that the ID is not invariant.  I create a list of the (exact) IDs from another document, equating them to a variable ('a').  I then loop through the list of IDs and ask if the contents of the textframe is equal to 'a'..This works o.k, unless there happens to be an extra space, a different kind of hyphen, etc. It would be so much easier if I could use the wildcards that work in a menu-driven text or GREP search in script just to ask about the contents of the textframe.
    Thanks again
    pcbaz (Peter BIerly)
    P.S. we have since rewritten the masters so this problem will not exist in the future -- we now know exactly which textframe and/or table indices to refer to to get any particular bits of information and don't need to ask questions about the contents.

  • Convert text string file to object array without outputting to file first?

    I have a log file that is just a text string file which is appended to with Out-File.  If the log file does not exist I pipe headers to it so that I can import the data as CSV.  For example:
    DATA.LOG
    DATE,TIME,RESPONSE_TIME
    05-28-2014, 14:47, 132
    05-28-2014, 14:50, 94
    05-28-2014, 14:53, 72
    I'm using Microsoft Chart Controls to graph the data; it takes it in via CSV format.  If I'm going to chart all the entries in DATA.LOG I can simply IMPORT-CSV DATA.LOG.  But I only want to graph the 20 most recent entries.
    Perhaps there is a better way to do this, but to maintain the header and get the 20 most recent entries I'm using select.
    $DATA+=Get-Content .\data.log | select -first 1
    $DATA+=Get-Content .\data.log | select -last 20
    The problem is $DATA is of type system string so I can't use it directly with Chart Controls; I need to get it in CSV format first.  I can Out-File $DATA and then use IMPORT-CSV.  But I'd prefer to not have to use
    the temporary file.  Any suggestions on how I can accomplish this objective?

    Import-CSV creates an object with the 'header' becoming the named values in the array.  The code I posted does the same thing as your 4 lines of code in one line of code:
    Much more quickly:
    PS C:\temp> (1..1000 | measure-command {import-csv .\data.log | select -last 2}).totalseconds
    0.4792951
    PS C:\temp> (1..1000 | measure-command {$DATATMP=@();$DATATMP+=Get-Content .\data.log | select -first 1;$DATATMP+=Get-Content .\data.log | select -last 2;ConvertFrom-CSV $DATATMP}).totalseconds
    1.6227726
    You're more than welcome to use whatever code you want, but if you want to improve your Powershell knowledge you should try to understand the object model around which Powershell is built, it is powerful and efficient.
    I hope this post has helped!

  • Unable to print added text only in Acrobat Pro XI

    User is trying to print added text that's been added to an existing PDF page.  In Acrobat X she chose "Form fields only" under Comments & Forms from the Print menu.  In XI it produces a blank page.  The added text only shows up if she chooses Document or Document and Markups, but then she gets the entire document.  She only wants the added text to print.

    Thanks to all who commented here.  I found that adding text using Tools>Content Editing>Add Text will not allow the user to print solely the added text.  As everyone responded here, that's as designed.  However, using Comment>Annotations>Add Text does allow the user to print solely the added text as she was used to doing in Acrobat X.  I thought it was the same tool under two different headings, but obviously they interact differently in the print menu.  Choosing Form fields only from the Print Menu's Comments & Forms panel will produce solely the text added under the Comment panel's Add Text tool without printing the rest of the document page.  And the user doesn't have to turn the document into a form to do so.

  • Copy and paste cell content of web form of Hyperion Planning

    Our end users encountered performance issues in using the web forms of Hyperion Planning. We have some large web form with 60 columns and 100 rows i.e. around 6000 cells. When end user move around the cell they feel a slow response in the web form especially when copy and paste some cell content from one row to another, or a few cells from one position to other position.
    Anyone got similar experience in using web form? Also we understand that Hyperion design will check the cell content of each cell and generate a SQL query to the backend metadata database. It is quite time consuming and waste CPU resource because most of the time our end user will not keep the text information under each cell. We have consulted Oracle team and understand that we cannot disable the cell content checking via SQL query.
    Any workaround solution exists to reduce or remove the performance issue in cell content copy and paste?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    We had faced the same issue a few years ago. One of our geeks had done a change in either Enterdata.js or Enterdata.jsp which disabled form cell validation. I don't currently have the code with me but it wasn't a big change really, remarking a function could be doing the trick.
    I don't think this is officially recommended by Oracle though.
    AlpThanks for your advice. We will try to locate the enterdata.jsp and enterdata.js and found out where the SQL being executed.We found out the Enterdata.js under the deployment directory of Weblogic. However it is over 400KB size and many many lines of codes. We think that it is very difficult to locate where should be customized to remove the SQL checking on cell content.

  • Customizing the Cell Content of a Pivot Table

    Hi,
    I have been away from ADF for a few years (since 10g v 1.3.1) and am quite impressed with all the Faces functionality added to the 11g release. The application I wrote relied heavily on pivot tables which back then, I had to use stored procedures in the database and dynamically views to display information. I am very interested in moving this application to 11g and taking advantage of the PivotTable component. One thing the application does is change the style of cells based upon the object being presented. I have been reading:
    Oracle® Fusion Middleware
    Web User Interface Developer's Guide for Oracle Application
    Development Framework
    11g Release 1 (11.1.1)
    B31973-03
    And am very interested in section 26.8 Customizing the Cell Content of a Pivot Table.
    I easily created a pivot table and would like to change the formatting of various cells. I created a backing bean for a test page and added the Example 26–4 Sample Code to Change Style and Text Style in a Pivot Table to the bean.
    public CellFormat getDataFormat(DataCellContext cxt)
    CellFormat cellFormat = new CellFormat(null, null, null);
    QDR qdr = cxt.getQDR();
    //Obtain a reference to the product category column.
    Object productCateg = qdr.getDimMember("ProductCategory");
    //Obtain a reference to the product column.
    Object product = qdr.getDimMember("ProductId");
    if (productCateg != null && productCateg.toString().equals("Sales Total"))
    cellFormat.setTextStyle("font-weight:bold")
    cellFormat.setStyle("background-color:#C0C0C0");
    else if (product != null && product.toString().equals("Sales Total")
    cellFormat.setTextStyle("font-weight:bold");
    cellFormat.setStyle("background-color:#C0C0C0");
    return cellFormat;
    Almost verbatim except changed the literals to select data in my use case domain. My question is: How do I invoke this message from my pivot table? I need to pass it a instance of the DataCellContext. The example is great and illustrates what I am looking to do but does not go into the implementation details required. Is there a sample app available for download that demonstrates these capabilities?
    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Hello,
    I haven't fully understood your question.
    Is it: How do I call the getDataFormat() method from my pivot table?
    If so , you need to set the dataFormat attribute of your pivot table.
    ex: <dvt:pivotTable id="pt2" var="cellData" varStatus="cellStatus"
    value="#{bindings.YourView.pivotTableModel}"
    headerFormat="#{viewScope.yourBean.getHeaderFormat}"
    *dataFormat="#{viewScope.yourBean.getDataFormat}"*
    contentDelivery="immediate" pivotEnabled="false"
    columnFetchSize="-1" rowFetchSize="-1"
    />
    I also put the *headerFormat* attribute which allows to customize the headers
    I hope I understood your question ;)

  • Hi, please help about text and divided/summed cells

    Here's my problem: I need that the text in a cell exceeds the right border of it, and this work ok by default.
    But when you sum or divide even only a pair of cells, in all the cells of that column the text is forced into the borders.
    I need to make a sheet of my guests (I work in a hotel), and the plan is this:
    - every column is a day of the calendar
    - every room has a row, to text in the Name of the guest and some useful info about the room type, a different color for different travel agency etc. Note that for me is very useful to read easily that info, and so the fact that the text goes in the next cells is a must have.
    For the next season I was managing to complete this registry adding a new row for each room, where to put in some numerical info, for doing sums of the people I have in day per day ect.
    So I was plannig to divide every cell of the second row in two cells, one for the adults in the room, one for the kids, in order to have the sum.
    But when I had the second row and divide the cells the text in the upper row is forced into the cell, and also all the text in that column.
    Anyone who can help me?
    Thank you in advance,
    Stefano

    Here's an example, with three different ways to shot the daily total.
    Totals for Jan 1 are shown in the three footer rows. Each is independent of the others, and only one would be used in practice.
    Form A is a simple sum of the column: =SUM(B)
    Form B separates the integer and fractional parts of the total, then recombines them into a text string:
    =INT(SUM(B))&"A "&ROUND(100*(SUM(B)-INT(SUM(B))),0)&"C"
    Form C does a similar separation, but treats the SUM result as a text string:
    =LEFT(SUM(B),LEN(SUM(B))-3)&"A "&RIGHT(SUM(B),2)&"C"
    Note that the daily counts are entered as # of adults, decimal, # of children (using two digits)
    Formulas will accommodate any number of adults, and up to 99 children (total). For a higher total, revisions to the entry method (one more digit after the decimal—2.001 in place of 2.01) and to Form B (replace 100 with 1000) OR Form C formulas (replace SUM(B),2 with SUM(B),3 ).

  • Getting cell content in HTMLDocument

    Hello, could someone tell me how to get the whole content of a cell in a table in a HTMLDocument?
    I use the following code but I only get the text, I lose the styles, images...
    HTMLDocument htmldocument = (HTMLDocument)jtpMain.getDocument();
    Element element = htmldocument.getCharacterElement(jtpMain.getCaretPosition());
    if(element == null)
    return "";
    String ls =element.getName();
    while (element.getName() != "td" && element != null) {
    element=element.getParentElement();
    if(element == null)
    return "";
    int inic,end;
    inic =element.getStartOffset();
    end =element.getEndOffset();
    String s = "";
    int len = end - inic + 1;
    if (len > 0)
    try
    s = htmldocument.getText(inic,len);
    catch (Exception e)
    e.printStackTrace();
    return s;

    Hi,
    each element has an AttributeSet which contains all the styles directly associated with that element. In addition, certain style attributes might come from parent elements of that element or from a style sheet associated to the HTMLDocument object.
    Depending on what you are about to do with the cell content, you either can iterate through the element structure to retrieve some or all style attributes from the elements mentioned above or you could use their HTML code.
    Can you be a little more specific about what is the purpose of your inquiry?

  • How can I display an icon, instead of text string, as a validation prompt?

    My validate method inside my custom validator is like this:
    public void validate(FacesContext context, UIComponent component, Object value) {
      Pattern datePattern = Pattern.compile("(\\d{2})/(\\d{2})/(\\d{4})");
      Matcher dateMatcher = datePattern.matcher((String)value);
      if(!dateMatcher.find()){
        ((UIInput)component).setValid(false);
        FacesMessage message = new FacesMessage();
        String msg = "[" + value + "] invalid date";
        message.setDetail(msg);
        context.addMessage(component.getClientId(context), message);
        FacesMessage facesMsg = new FacesMessage(FacesMessage.SEVERITY_FATAL, "xx", "msg");
        throw new ValidatorException(facesMsg);
    }My JSP has this:
    <h:inputText id="test" value="#{projecthandler.test}">
    <f:validator validatorId="DateValidator" />
    </h:inputText>
    <h:message id="testErrorMessage" for="test"/>The <h:message> tag will kick in if the user has invalid data in the <h:inputText> field and clicks submit.
    When the page is regenerated, the user will see a text string reflecting what the issue is.
    However, instead of this, I would like to display an icon consisting of a red circle with an exclamation point.
    The user is supposed to click on the icon if they want more information. By clicking on the icon,
    the user will see a message box, with a description of the error.
    This is our standard for applications. I'm trying to put together a demo showing how an existing application
    would work in JSF, so I won't be able to talk others into using JSF, unless I can get the validation to display an
    icon instead of text.

    OK, I noticed a bug in my validate method. This is updated to fix the bug, and to include the recomendation about background-image:
      public void validate(FacesContext context, UIComponent component, Object value) {
        System.out.println("DateValidator.test.1");
        Pattern datePattern = Pattern.compile("(\\d{2})/(\\d{2})/(\\d{4})");
        Matcher dateMatcher = datePattern.matcher((String)value);
        System.out.println("DateValidator.test.1");
        if(!dateMatcher.find()){
          ((UIInput)component).setValid(false);
          FacesMessage message = new FacesMessage();
          String msg = "<span style='background-image: url(/error.gif)'/>";
          message.setDetail(msg);
          message.setSeverity(FacesMessage.SEVERITY_FATAL);
          context.addMessage(component.getClientId(context), message);
          throw new ValidatorException(message);
      }When I run this, the litteral string of "<span style='background-image: url(/error.gif)'/>" is printed as the message. It does not interpret this as a span tag with an image url.
