Adding USB ports

Has anyone ever had a problem with using a powered USB hub? One of the guys from tech support told me that it might create a conflict with the power in the existing port, especially if the hub had more power than the installed port. But others have said they've never heard of such a thing. Anyone have any experience with this? Two of my USB ports have decided to quit working, and it would be nice to have more, but I don't want to blow out my only remaining port. Any comments are appreciated.

Stephen,Never heard of that conflict. Two of the iMac's ports are powered seperately to the third (I believe the third is powered with the modem instead).
A trick we usually advice for dead Firewire ports is to switch off the iMac and disconnect from the mains electricity for a long period (few hours) this has been known to bring ports back to life. I recently read (from a forum regular - who I would credit but whose Alias escapes me at this moment) that this worked for USB and not just Firewire.

  • Adding USB ports to mac pro

    Hi,
i was wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to fit more usb ports in the back of the Mac Pro?
I got my mac pro about 4/5 years ago, and could really use some more ports.
Thanks for any help and advice,

What's wrong with using a hub?
    A few things:
With a hub, all devices must share the bandwidth of the one built-in port the hub is on. If one device on the hub takes up all the port bandwidth, too bad for the others. Or they will fight it out. But with most types of USB cards, each individual port on the card gets full USB bandwidth...no conflicts.
You need to use up a built-in USB port to plug in a hub, so adding a 4-port hub only gives you 3 more new ports in reality. With a USB card, all card ports are in addition to the Mac Pro ports.
A hub needs to take up one more outlet on your power strip. Or two or three outlets if it has a big transfomer. A USB card uses the Mac Pro power supply directly with no additional messy power and data cables.
A hub probably doesn't cost that much less than a USB card, if there is any price difference at all, yet the card has so many more advantages.
About the only reason to not get a USB card is that you've already used up the slots in your Mac Pro.

Will any PCI based USB card work on an ultra 10?. If so can anyone
    provide details?.
    Thanks,

Most likely, because your Mac and iPhoto think that you have connected a camera or mass storage device that has images on it.
Not sure where to go from there, but I would start by looking at the setting in both iPhoto Preferences and Image Capture if I wanted iPhoto to ignore that device.

    Sorry, but not possible.
Time Machine can only back up the internal drive(s) in a Mac....or a drive that is connected directly to a Mac via USB or FireWire.....provided that the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
I am not recommending this, but you might be able to move the drive from the USB port to the Mac, and have Time Machine back it up that way.....then move it back to the USB port on the Time Capsule......but this will involve doing some risky things.....and manually changing settings around everytime you make the swap. Something will surely go wrong....but up to you if you want to try it.
Carbon Copy Cloner will back up the drive connected to the USB port on the Time Capsule to the Time Capsule disk, but these will not be Time Machine backups.  SuperDuper claims to also be able to do this.....but I have not tested it.

  • Adding USB 2.0 ports via PCI cards

I was looking into picking up a used Quicksilver model but wanted to know about adding USB 2.0 ports via a PCI card. I read that it needs to be compatible with 33MHz bus and not a card that only runs 66MHz. Are most cards compatible that work in PC's with Quicksilver models?
I found a local shop selling Bytecc cards for under $10. Which would be a nice easy upgrade for the power mac. Any advice much appreciated.

Not all USB PCI cards willwork in a Mac. A USB 2.0 PCI card is what you need. Best bet is any card with a NEC PD720100 or PD720101 chipset (xlr8yourmac results recommend the same). Read this for more feedback: http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/firewire/fwusb_card_deepsleep.html
Stick with the NEC chip, and try NOT to use drivers, Tiger doesn't need the drivers.

  • Adding USB 2.0 ports to a Mac Pro 2008

    Hi,
I love my Mac Pro 2008! Great machine, awesome performance, but I need more ports Who needs only three USB ports in the back, that's a joke!
Anyways, I just bought 2 StarTech 6-port USB 2.0 PCI cards from an online vendor, but quickly found out that it didn't fit my Mac. The description of the card even says it is compatible with Mac OS X. I suspect that Apple have changed the PCI slots for something else in the Mac Pro 2008. What are they and can we buy USB card that fit those slots? If so where? I am desperate for more ports.

You may have stumbled upon or checked some of the support pages?
    http://www.apple.com/support/macpro/
    - which has a link to an article titled "about your PCI Express slots"
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304122
    Specs 2008: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP11:
    PCI Express expansion7
Three open full-length PCI Express expansion slots
One PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot
    Two PCI Express x4 slots
And of course support for up to four PCI Express video cards; Fibre Channel; Mac Pro RAID.
You could install a powered USB hub, or FW/USB2, as long as you have free slots for more. I have FW800, a 1x Sonnet Tempo (couple storage drives), and a 4x Tempo (multiple RAID sets; Port Multiplier card and multi-drive enclosures and 4 channels).

  • Adding extra internal USB ports

I need to add more USB ports to my Mac Pro. Is it a case of buying a PCI Express USB card? They sell on Amazon for nearly £40, which seems high, but they don't mention OS X compatibility?
    Thanks in advance.

Any will or might do, but many can also interfere with sleep, wake from sleep freezing, and other issues
    http://www.macsales.com has PCI Express cards.
Aaxeon has USB2 but their FW cards are known to keep fan still running and therefore not "deep sleep" mode.

  • USB Ports on 3 month old Satellite C655-S5049 do not work-even after Recovery to "Out-of-Box" state

Hello - Hoping someone can help with another suggestion- it doesn't look good.
Both USB ports on my wife's 3 month old Satellite C655-S5049 are non-functional with any USB device. Flash drives, wireless mouse, and external hard drive (powered) that all work on all of my other computers, do not work in either of this laptop's USB ports.
This problem seems to have developed gradually, and became noticeable previously as non-responsiveness in the wireless mouse, which gradually became a concern, with the computer appearing to freeze or lock-up - probably because of the number of times the mouse was clicked on shortcuts and executables before something happened.
The ports are now completely "dead"- no recognition of anything inserted once the computer is up and running.
There appears to be a thermal component involved, since I was able to get the devices recognized and working for up to a minute when booting the computer with the devices in the ports after it had been off for several hours after I did the default state recovery. The flash drive and mouse were recognized, drivers loaded message, but they then went to "unplugged" before I could get the cursor moving. I was able to access the flash drive, since I did it as soon as the driver loaded, but then it disappeared ("un-plugged" itself in the driver loaded message box). I can also get them recognized from this COLD boot state when I immediately plug them in once Windows 7 (64) loads, but they quickly disappear. If I wait a few minutes before re-booting, they flash during the Windows boot, but drop-out before it completes. If I wait 3-4 hours to re-boot, they flash (are recognized) for about a minute (Windows completely loads), but then they drop out.
I tried all of the suggestions on this board (and others) before doing a Recovery to Factory Default state. I have tried it with the original version 1.20 Bios, and with the version 1.50 Bios update. All driver updates have been downloaded and installed. The laptop does occasionally lock-up at the Toshiba screen during boot, and is verrrry slow in some operations (2 hours to do the recovery discs). The only other noticeable problem (at this time) is an occasional drop-out of wireless (Atheros AR9285) connectivity, which I have been blaming on the router since it is sporadic and infrequent (not consistent with the thermal argument). These problems are all after the Factory Default State recovery operation, so my assumption is that they are hardware based.
Any suggestions for a solution? This is a standard spec Satellite C655-S5049 that I was considering adding another 2GB memory to, but now I am unsure of its' future. A laptop cooler that runs from a USB port seems counter-productive.
I am technically capable, so you can be much briefer in your response than I have been in trying to fully detail the problems. This isn't the NVidia chip, but it does bring back memories of laptops past.
    Thanks for any help,

  • If you're having problems with USB ports, read on...

i'm reading that alot of people on here are having problems with their front (or top) usb on their cases not working with their k7n2 boards.  i have come across the correct solution to this problem in one of the posts (after having solved the problem on my own), however noone has posted the solution by itself on this forum so everyone can easily see it.
The trick is to make sure that pin 10 (at least on a K7n2 delta-L), the pin labeled USBOC (USB Open Connection), is wired to NOTHING.  If the connector to your front usb ports is fused into one giant connector and it HAS a wire that will connect to this pin (labeled GND2 or Shield or something), CUT THAT WIRE.  Pin 10 on JUSB2 (at least on a K7n2 delta-L) must be OPEN.  If this pin IS connected to something (even if it is only GND), the motherboard will think something is connected to this usb port and you will get many unknown devices listed in your windows device manager and the rest of your usb ports may or may not work.
As a general rule of thumb, if a pin on a motherboard is labeled OC for "Open Connection" and you wire something to it, you're asking for trouble.
If you cannot understand this you should not be attempting to wire a motherboard in the first place.
Here is a picture to go along with this discussion.  If you cannot see this picture, I am sorry for it has probably been removed from the place I posted it online as I cannot attach pictures physically to this post.  If someone here has a way to permanently host this picture and post it to this thread permanently, that would be wonderful.
In summary: all usb ports/headers have only four pins associated with it (VCC, USB+, USB-, GND).  If the connector (whether it's one big connector or individual sockets) to your front/top usb port has 5 sockets, don't connect the 5th socket to anything.  That goes for any case/motherboard combination.  This is what i'm talking about above.  I have no idea why motherboard and case manufacturers have a 5th pin involved in any way on either the pin or socket side.  It is not used for usb.
EDIT:  I just noticed this has already been discussed in the trouble shooting guide in the above sticky post.  oh well, now we have a pretty picture to go along with it (i hope).

    :-D)Hello guys,
as promised I come back here to give the results of my tests... and I have to say that you saved my day (even if I had to open back 60 secured cases).
So the solution was the right one, when I unplugged the "ground" end of the front USB connector cable from the USBOC pin, those connectors finally worked as expected with USB 2.0 compliant devices.
So thank you really much for this very usefull information !
And even if maybe it's not only MSI's fault, I still believe that more information on those connectors in the user's manual would be really usefull (who knows what USBOC means except a few people and who could imagine that pluggin on it a "ground" cable would make it unserviceable ??). And who ever saw a user's manual bundled with a case ?? it's pretty unusual
Hope that someone at MSI will read that and take it into consideration, not for me (because now I'm aware) but for the thousands other consumers that will feel a little bit "annoyed" with that issue. I don't think that adding one line about it in user's manuals would be so much expensive
But I'm quite lucky myself... being able to understand and write english (even if I still have some progress to do  ) gave me the possibility to find the solution... but a lot of my french fellows can't do that... and there's no french forum here... How can they do ? They rely on user's manual
    Best regards,
    Nicolas

  • Video issues with USB port replicator with Digital Video

I have a T400 running Windows XP SP3 32-bit, with the graphics mode set to use the ATI video card. I'm also using the latest approved Lenovo ATI driver for this machine.
I have two issues, one of which I consider major:
    1) Sometimes when I plug in the replicator (got the latest drivers off of the Lenovo download site) everything works great, and other times the monitor never powers up. I plug the replicator into my laptop and the external keyboard and mouse work and the port replicator system tray icon appears, but the monitor is still in power-saving mode. If I try to activate the monitor by "extending" or "mirroring" it, it comes up with a pop-up that says:
"ThinkPad USB port rep. device: Error" - "Fail when adding device instance into driver!"
    2) This is more of an annoyance, but I noticed when the monitor does work that black areas of the screen end up getting sparkly green lines through them. They aren't "actually there" in the sense that it's not corruption from the computer, they are simply artifacts of what seems to be some signalling problem.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • No Audio or USB Ports after Recovery on Satellite L505D-S5983

I have recently done a system recovery with disks I created when I originally got my Satellite L505D-S5983. Which put the laptop back to an "out of the box" state...supposedly... I have been asking on a Microsoft forum for help with my problems, with limited luck.... It is still not working. I'm pasting my original posts here hoping that maybe somebody on here can help me.
    POST 1:
My Toshiba Satellite L505D is running 32-bit Windows 7 Home Premium. After about 4 months of downtime I recently started it back up. There were roughly 37 updates to install when I turned it on, as expected. The updates were downloaded and installed, but when the system was restarted the system froze as soon as the desktop loaded. I booted multiple times and every time it completely freezes immediately after start up. I am not even able to open the task manager (ctrl+alt+del). They system boots perfectly fine in safe mode, and I ran what diagnostics I could find and nothing shows up....according to Windows everything is fine.
After Going through this multiple times, I got sick of it and decided to do a system recovery. Not a system RESTORE...it was a system RECOVERY. The HDD was completely wiped, and the system was supposedly returned to its original form as it was out of the box. Getting my hopes up as it finished its process... The system worked fine through the initial setup (language, time, etc.) and then as soon as the desktop loaded it froze again!
So here I am with a completely wiped HDD (except for the factory toshiba software), and a Windows OS that will only work in safe mode... I would like to avoid reinstalling Windows, I don't have any disks or anything. So any help would be appreciated
P.S. let me elaborate on what I mean by "froze". The system is completely non-responsive. No cursor movement at all, touchpad, keyboard, USB ports, nothing. When I did the restore the cursor, touchpad and keyboard worked through the initial settings only. Even when the desktop is loading i get movement for a second or two before everything freezes.
    REPLY I RECIEVED:
    Hi,
Since the computer is working in safe mode, I would suggest you to start the computer in clean boot to check which third party program is causing the issue. To configure your computer to clean boot follow the link
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
Note: After you have finished troubleshooting, follow step 7 in the article to boot to normal startup.
If the issue does not persist in clean boot then refer ‘Step 3’, ‘step 4’ and ‘step 5’ from the following link to narrow done the issue and find out which service or startup item is causing the issue.
MY RESPONSE POSTING MY CURRENT ISSUE:
Thank you, and yes that's exactly what it was. It turned out to be an ATI program for my AMD graphics card that was not installed properly. It makes me wonder if I had to do the recovery in the first place lol.
However now I have a whole other issue. Windows is now telling me that "No audio output device is installed".....
In device manager the yellow "!" is there (High Definition Audio Controller), it tells me that it is not working....yet it says that the best drivers are installed! So yeah...I have no audio now. The only info windows gives me for the sound card is that it from Microsoft... with a driver version of 6.1.7601.17514....which naturally doesn't really help me since I have no idea what card or mobo I have . Is there any way for me to find out what I need other than opening up my laptop?

Ok...so I have installed all of the appropriate drivers that I thought I may need from this website. I have tried ALL of those system analysis programs that were suggested. Every one of them lists my mobo simply as a Toshiba motherboard, with no audio card information. Which I'm assuming that is because it has an internal sound processor. My problem is that none of the properties, or ANYTHING I try, will give me information on what I need to fix this...
I would be more than willing to run the recovery again if I knew that I had everything I actually need... When I created my original recovery disks it created a third disk with "apps and drivers". I installed all of them...and still here I am... And I haven't even STARTED on my USB port issue yet...those don't work either, and they don't even show up in my Device Manager...sigh...
And please, a response that doesn't look like an automated response to try and sell software like the last one I recieved from the Microsoft forum would be appreciated
Thank you for your time, and apologies for the lengthy post, but I wanted to provide as much info as possible.

I would try another restore of the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media. Maybe something went wrong in the process. Make sure everything works before applying any updates and adding any hardware or software.
Then add things carefully, rebooting Windows and testing the USB and audio at each step.
    Please note this.

  • Moved drive to USB Port on Time Capsule and TM no longer sees backups

I moved my FireWire attached HD from a direct attachment to my Mac Pro to attached via the USB port on my Time Capsule. Time Machine now wants to start over, and does not see the previous backups.
The destination drive name did not change, other than the added NAS address.
Is there a way to force TM to use the previous backup set incrementally instead of starting over?
    Thx

unfortunately, it's not that simple. TM treats backups to directly attached drives differently vs. networked ones.

  • HP G72 USB Ports Not Working - Battery Issue?

I recently purchased a G72-250US and found out too late that none of the three USB ports work. I have tried three different devices - a mechanical keyboard, a Razer mouse, and a SanDisk thumb drive. Of the three, the thumb drive is the only one which receives enough power for its LED to remain on, but none of the devices are recognized by Windows, even as 'unknown' devices.
I've gone through every step I could find or think of to correct any possible sources of problems that could be created by software - uninstalling USB drivers, changing power settings, manually adding data to the Windows registry - and nothing has worked. I have not been able to find any options in the BIOS regarding the USB ports. I have also tried to use 'refresh' in the HP Support Assistant's Health Analysis tool, but the process always fails at 'Gathering Information'.
This has led me to believe that there is a hardware issue, but I'm not sure what the nature of this issue could be. If the ports were just dead, why would the thumb drive be getting any power at all? The only thing I can think of is that there is an issue related to the battery. Per another thread on this topic, I unplugged the laptop and took out the battery and left it like that overnight, but this did not solve the problem. I then ran the Battery Check from the Support Assistant, and it very quickly indicated a failure.
Is it possible that a bad battery is causing the USB ports to not provide enough power to my devices? I previously owned a Compaq CQ42 whose battery was so bad it caused an error to pop up every time I turned on or restarted the computer, but this never resulted in any issues aside from having to keep it plugged in at all times.

  • Cannot print from Canon MF4412 through USB port of Time Capsule

    Hi everyone,
I've recently purchased a new Canon imageCLASS MF4412 and cannot print while connected to the USB port of the time capsule. I can print and scan perfectly when connected directly to the mac.
This is the exact steps I took:
1.After connecting the usb cable to the back of Time capsule, I go to the sys pref pane to add a printer.
2.It shows up as a 'Bonjour' and I had to manually select the driver.
3.It added fine and I thought everything was setup.
4.However, when i go to print something, there's an error. "Canon URF II Printer Driver"
"Cannon communicate with the printer, or the printer is not supported. If the printer is supported, check the printer connection and add it again. Then, if the Print Dialog box has a [Printer Info] button, acquire the printer information: 10322"
    Anybody know of a solution?
    Thanks.

I got a similar problem on MF4412, the canon 4412 is connected the newest airport extreme , it get configured. But I got same problem described about on my leopard, lion, even worst on iOS, it does not find the printer. But I got a Windows 7 starter NetBook ...haha it works, I can print it from Windows. what is the problem then,it works on Windows but not Apple's OS??????

  • Is there a way to make Time Capsule back-up its contents to an external hdd connected to it's usb port.

I wanted to know if there is anyway i could automatically backup my time capsule to an external drive connected to it's usb port. I tried using automator to make it copy newly added files into the external but it didn't seem to work as i had hoped and i wanted to know if anyone had any experiences in using other programs to copy the contents of one folder in the TC to another folder in a drive externally connected to the TC and also keep the contents of both folders up to date.
In short, I am basically trying to make a "raid 1" and i know that TCs dont support raid natively so thats why i asked if anyone knows of a program that could do it from the mac side.
                                                                                                         Thanks.

Carbon copy cloner might work.. expect it to be very slow.. especially if you are using wireless.
There will be various rsync shareware available.. but like your experience getting it to actually work is loads of fun.. or NOT.
