Address Bar Question

On the Windows platform, if you click in a browser address bar it automatically highlights the entire address. Is there a way to get the Mac to default to this. On both Safari and Firefox 2.0 I either have to swipe the entire line or right click and choose select all.
Thanks!

• Drop down menu on address bar question.

Some urls on the address bar's drop down haven't been accessed by me for a year. Others that I access all the time are not there.
This is inconvenient and inefficient.
I saw some info about an insanely complicated way that determines what goes into the dropdown.
How about this -
1) Let the user specify items to go into the dropdown.
2) Let the user determine how many urls go into the dropdown (by having a delete).
If neither of those is possible, then do what Opera does and have everything go in there (several dozen currently on mine).
Or do what IE does, and have the most recent urls typed in go in the drop down.
The way Firefox does it is ridiculous.
You've taken what should be a simple and basic process, and made it absurdly and needlessly complicated as far as what goes in there.
And made the dropdown - one of the most useful features of a browser for me - fairly useless.

Take a look at Location bar autocomplete on the features and preferences of the location bar.

• I can't delete items in my address bar how to do it is my question

I can not delete items in my address bar, have tried previous instructions to click onto arrow high light item to be deleted.
I have press the delete key it seems to delete, but is still there
when i click on to arrow on address bar HOW TO PERMANENTLY
DELETE ITEMS IN ADDRESS BAR IS MY QUESTION.
Thank you

I'm not sure I understand why you say "I want the excel file storing part outside the case structure".
From the rest of your description, it sounds like you want to write to file only if something is true. That means that you put the write to file function inside the TRUE case.
You can pass the file refnum into the case and back out again, if you need to. Pass it straight thru in the FALSE case, and thru the WRITE FILE function in the TRUE case.

• I can no longer access websites through the location bar (address bar).

A few days ago, my location bar (address bar) suddenly stopped working. When I typed in an address and clicked on Enter, nothing happened - and I mean nothing. The cursor at the end of what I had just typed into the location bar just sat there, blinking at me. Clicking on the arrow at the right end of the location bar didn’t work either. On the other hand, if I clicked on a link in a website or e-mail, I would be taken right to the website at the other end of the link. And when I clicked on a bookmark, I was taken to the bookmarked site. It is only when I type or paste something into the location bar that I am unable to reach the sought after website. Exiting and then re-entering Firefox did not help, nor did rebooting my computer. I was using version 6.0.2 at the time. I upgraded to version 7.0.1; that didn’t help either. Help!!!

That is a signature symptom of the "AVG Safe" extension in the Link Scanner component of AVG Free, but you don't have that extension on the computer you posted from, see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Problematic_extensions
There is also these which you don't have either

Try disabling the Foxit PDF creator as it has an ask.com authorship signature.
If that doesn't work see if Firefox works in Safe Mode. If it does it is probably an extension problem.
# Restart in (Firefox) Safe Mode with Help ("Alt+H") > "Restart with Add-ons disabled" to restart immediately (one-time) in safe mode. Do not check-mark any of the items (they are certainly not safe as they make those changes permanent).

• The Url History in the address bar is not working anymore. Reinstalling/Updating does not fix this. How to I get this working again?

I'm talking about the Address Bar.
For example: You type in Google and it shows www.google.com etc. Because this is in your history.
But this has stopped working since I emptied my cookies. But not my history. I also checked if my history is still there. Which it is.
And I cant find out why at all.
I'm sorry if I really can't give much info. But this is what I concluded. Seeing English ain't my native language. My google searches for this question seem to be either in the wrong direction or this is something that never happened before.

Tools>Options>Privacy - Click the drop down menu under Location Bar and set when using the location bar, suggest to - History and Bookmarks.

• I want name on address bar goes to home page, not search engine

Just today I hooked up a new modem/router that I purchased at a WIndstream store. I have been browsing the internet for years with Firefox. I have changed the keyword.url setting in my Firefox configuration (see https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/833252#answer-197476) so that the new version would act like the old version and go directly to the webpage when the name was typed in the address bar. For example: when I type in "windstream" (no ".net" or".com") I would go directly to windstream' home page.
However, when I hooked up my new modem/router I my browser is hijacked and goes to a Windstream search page. I have tried everything from re-installing Firefox, re-changing the "keyword.url" setting, I even tried the Firefox ad-on here (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/browse-by-name/).
All to no avail......there is something that has changed by adding Windstream's hardware and connecting to their network that will not allow me to use this function of Firefox.
Nothing else changed, but a new piece of hardware.....
Changed keyword.url to : http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q=
Re-installed Firefox after cleaning all history and cookies.
Tried the add-on "Browse by name"
Wasted my time calling Windstream tech support.
Changed to openDNS
Tried to disable the feature through Windstream's web page, but then it just happens with the new search engine.

Opt-out of Windstream's search service: Type in something to get their sneaky web search page to come up, then click the tiny link at the bottom right "about this page". That sends you to a page where you can opt-out of their service.
To opt-out from their "valuable" sneaky service, you have to choose to opt-in to another search service.
You have to do this with each browser. And it still sends you to your search engine's results page, not to your URL the way you might want it to.
I would rather the default be to allow me to opt-in if I choose to, not have to jump through hoops to find out how to opt-out. It's taken me weeks to discover this. Annoying!

• Reset the "awesome bar" (address bar) search engine

I had to install some crapware, and it made me install snap.do. This was a mistake. I have completely removed snap.do, so I think, but it has injected itself somehow within firefox. I have removed it entirely, cept for when i type anything in the address bar for a search, it currently only searches http://search.snapdo.com/?st=ds&q= its driving me quite batty. Please read my things I have done before you post.
Things I have done..
- Switched the "search box" search engine.
I've tried to switch it to something else like yahoo, and then switch back to google, then type in the ADDRESS BAR, still defaults to snap.do. I've also tried all sorts of things, as I believe since firefox 23 whatever you have selected in the search box, will default for the address bar, in my case.. no.
- keyworld.url or any about:config search for snap or snapdo or snap.do or *
Listen, this has been gone since firefox 23. I'm running version 27.0.1, ITS NOT THERE DONT SUGGEST THISSS FKJALSDFLKAJSD. I've also tried the keyworld.url hack. First time I tried there was a snap.do keyword and i was like "EFFFIN AAAA!". But after a restart, snapdo still took over.
- Firefox>help>troubleshoot>reset
I'll punch you in the face if you even remotely suggest this, i've done it 329049320 times ;)
- Malware/antivirus/dafjkdsj tool.
Unless it directly removes snap.do dont even tempt me.
- uninstall/reinstall
Ok.. c'mon, you think I havent tried this?
-add/remove programs
rly?
Ok so you see my frustration here? One more list..
Things I will not do..
- Delete my firefox profile.
I'd just really rather not, as history is how I browse some stuff. and well other things as well, I mean in the end, if i must i must.
But if anyone has any other ideas on how i can force firefox to a search engine please let me know, and i will be your friend ;D

Cor-el has suggested to create a new profile, and as I can see in your initial question posting, it was stated that if you had to, you would do it. So, if you could please do - it would be appreciated.
Something I suggest is a clean reinstall, however that is something you would not like obviously but I will enter those instructions here anyways so you can look over it.
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
#*Windows:
#**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
#**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Installing Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.
<b>WARNING:</b> Do not run Firefox's uninstaller or use a third party remover as part of this process, because that could permanently delete your Firefox data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. <u>These cannot be recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!</u>
Please report back to see if this helped you!
Thank you.

• Why can I not have the address bar appear when I installed Firefox 3.6?

Your "pictures" appeared and I had to choose one in order to continue. It would not clear unless I chose one. From then on, I could have no address bar, just Google, Yahoo, and in very dark bqckground which was hard to see. I tried everything; and finally gave up and deleted my Firefox. I have been a user for several years, but this one messed everything up. I could not get my addresses from the Express, and if I am going to have to use Outlook for the address book, I might as well just use Explorer! Give me some help (I have tried filling in the questions) and I will reinstall Firefox, I did like it a lot.
== This happened ==
Every time Firefox opened
== I was forced to chose one of your pictures. It took the place of your tool bar and address bar. ==

• I am unable to enter a URL into the address bar.

Problem description: I can type an address into the URL bar, but when I hit enter, nothing happens. Nothing happens when I hit the "go" arrow. Nothing happens when I paste an address into the URL bar with "Paste & Go".
The awesome bar functionality seems to work, but when I select an address, it puts the address in the URL bar, but nothing happens.
It's just refusing to actually load any URL I type into the URL bar.
The bookmarks menu works just fine, as does everything else.
This occurred when I upgraded to Firefox 20.0.
I found the problem, but I'm not sure if this is a bug or not.
I tried disabling all the add-ons, but that didn't help.
The problem did NOT occur when using a fresh newly-created profile. You're probably thinking something was corrupt in my old profile. But that's not it.
The problem occurs when the profile is located on a network share. If I copy the profile to the local hard drive, the problem goes away. If I copy the fresh new profile to the network share, the problem starts occurring there.
I keep the profile on the network share because it gets backed up automatically every night. I have been doing this for at least the last five or six years, and it's been working fine since I don't know what Firefox version. 4 or 5? No idea, not important.
Here is my profiles.ini:
[General]
StartWithLastProfile=1
[Profile0]
Name=Joe D
IsRelative=0
Path=\\Splut\joed\.mozilla\firefox-win\Profiles\7ng20p6c.default
[Profile1]
Name=Copy
IsRelative=1
Path=Profiles/7ng20p6c.default
Default=1
As you can see, profile 0 is on the network share, and profile 1 is on the local hard drive. I copied the profile from the network to the local drive to create profile 1.
But wait! It gets even better!
They are not just identical copies. They are the EXACT SAME FILES. The folder for profile 1 is a symbolic link to the folder for profile 0. (Yes, you can do symlinks in Windows now.)
So the profiles are literally exactly the same, but one works and the other doesn't.
This solves my issue by allowing me to keep my profile on the network, but the other way should still work.
Any ideas?

There appears to be a problem with Firefox 20 with UNC paths when using roaming profiles on a server.

• After updating to FireFox 16.0.1 in Windows, the address bar stopped working, as well as the search bar, though not immediately. Reinstall didn't fix it.

Initially I downloaded an AOL-optimized version, but when the problems came up I reinstalled the regular version and it was fine. Two days ago it randomly started again. Address bar won't go anywhere with enter or pressing the arrow button, and the search bar has no search engine. Trying add a search engine by clicking "manage search engines" doesn't help; the "add search enginges" button is unresponsive and there are none in the list to choose from. I uninstalled everything including my customizations and personal settings and reinstalled, which still didn't help. I tried disabling all the plugins and that didn't work either. I even tried searching from the FireFox home page search, since at that point it was the only page I could get to, and even that wouldn't search. The most recent add-on I downloaded was the Evernote Web Clipper I think, but it didn't seem to coincide with the start of the problems.
Update: I ran a malware program (MalWareBytes) and it came up with nothing. I also got back into FireFox to get the Troubleshooting Information and added it in. In addition, here's my complete plugin/extension list:

Next step, if safe mode did not work.
<u>First: Try a clean install, (you have had a none standard version installed previously)</u><br /> that involves deleting the program files. Then if necessary try troubleshooting by creating and using a clean empty Firefox profile.

• I cannot upgrade past 28 my dropdown menu will not work in the address bar I can not search from address bar stuck at home page

Once I open firefox browser with anything past 28.0 my browser becomes a paperweight no searches from the address bar. Not from the list of drop downs, not from typing the address in the bar. Stuck to the home page it had as default. Firefox does an update every time I close it forcing me to return to 28.0 or through my F--n computer in the trash. Noticed others had this problem but got only questions with no help coming from firefox. This is a Vista 64 bit if that maters. I kinda think maybe nothing past 28 will work but with Vista but no one from firefox will step up and say that.

Type about:addons<enter> in the address bar to open your Add-ons Manager.
Hot key; <Control>(Mac:<Command>)<Shift> A)
In the Add-ons Manager, on the left, select Extensions.
Disable a few add-ons, then Restart Firefox.

• Drag and drop a URL from IE's address bar

I have a Processing application written (by others) that uses [Andreas Schlagel's sDrop library|http://www.sojamo.de/libraries/drop/] to accept URLs dragged and dropped from the users' browsers' address bar. The application works fine for Chrome and for Firefox and for old versions of IE but not for IE 9 or IE 10. I'm investigating how to fix this.
In the sDrop library [the Java code to handle the drop|http://code.google.com/p/sojamo/source/browse/trunk/src/sojamo/drop/DropHandler.java] uses the Java class DataFlavor which in turn defines a number of flavours:
imageFlavor
javaFileListFlavor
javaSerializedObjectMimeType
plainTextFlavor (deprecated)
stringFlavor
Over on StackOverflow one questioner enumerates the data formats offered by the different browsers when they drop and for IE he lists:
UntrustedDragDrop
msSourceUrl
FileGroupDescriptor
FileGroupDescriptorW
FileContents
UniformResourceLocator
Effects: Link
The URL format does not seem to match the DataFlavors given by the class. Is this where the two additional DataFlavors, javaJVMLocalObjectMimeType and javaRemoteObjectMimeType come into there own? If so, then can someone point me at any samples, examples, tutorials, or code snippets where a Java application is the successful drop target for a URL dragged from IE's address bar?

Dragging an URL OR the 'favicon' does NOT work when you want to drag this to a sub 'folder' in your bookmarks. e.g. I drag an URL or favicon to Bookmarks, I have a sub-folder called 'Recipes' where I want to drop the dragged object. I position the mouse over 'Recipes' and the sub-menu appears. I move the dragged object to drop this on the recipe list in the sub-menu and the sub-menu simply disappears. Equally, I CAN drop this on the top level BM menu but it does not drop in the place needed (I want this (e.g.) NOT at the bottom but two up from there. What happens is that the dropped URL appears to locate it self in a random position. Easy to replicate by dragging the same URL to the BM menu and it drops wherever it feels like. FF team have clearly failed to do some basic testing on this and there are many (correction MANY) other annoying things like this that show there has been poor or insufficient testing. I have been a fan of FF for a long time and recommended it to others. Now I cannot do this with confidence and am seriously thinking of switching back to an old version. However, I might simply go to Chrome. Are you listening FF team? A simple look at the forums will show the groundswell of annoyed people. You have altered the way many things work, seemingly focusing on prettifying things rather than ensuring stability and ensuring basic features continue to work...

• How do I change Default search engine in the address bar, not the search window on the top right or by using about:config, doesn't work. Worked fine until this FF 8.0 update, now defaults to Yahoo 7. About to throw it in and use Chrome.

When Firefox 8.0 installed it has automatically changed my address bar default search engine to Yahoo7 which is crap. I can not change this back. So when I start FF it opens to my google home page, when I type a subject and search the results are displayed in a Yahoo 7 results page, not google. I am not talking about my default home page or the search bar to the top right. This is still google.
The settings in about:config do nothing.
This was fine until FF 8.0.

Thanks dmcritchie,
Nice effort but that answers a different question about fixing the add-on Yahoo toolbar.
Pernich and I want to know; If you type search criteria directly into the address bar and hit enter, how to change that search engine from Yahoo to Google.
Otherwise I too will go back to using Google Chrome, even though I really like FF8.0
please help

• How can I copy text as-is from the address bar?

Hi there,
I use numerous username/password combinations to log onto an ftp site in the following form:
ftp://fairlyShortUsername:[email protected]
E.g. ftp://moduleFour:[email protected]
Using this method allows me to log straight in because username and password are stored right inside the url.
Due to their convenience, it is useful to be able to pass these links around to others.
If I start typing the username (e.g. 'moduleF'...) in the address bar, the complete URL appears in the autocomplete suggestions and I can use the down arrow to display it in the address bar and copy it to the clipboard.
However, when I paste what I copied (taking the above example), I just get ftp://ftp.site.com. This is no use to anyone without the information that has been stripped out.
I'm not concerned with security (understandably, given that I'm using urls with plain text passwords).
I'm sure firefox is just trying to be 'helpful', but is there any way I can copy the exact text displayed at the time I press Ctrl + C, without firefox interfering? At the moment, I have to look up the username and password and paste them into a url template every time, which given the number of times I've done it, has already taken up more time of my life than it's taken me to write this question, which is why I'm asking.
*** NOTE: Changing the value of browser.urlbar.trimURLs and browser.urlbar.formatting.enabled has *not* allowed me to fix this. ***

Okay, I think one of these add-ons is just what you need.
Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web link}
(There’s a lot of good stuff here) and search for what you want.
My CopyFixer  {web link}
Use Ctrl+C when nothing selected to copy page title and url in
various format (template base).
Send Tab URLs {web link}
Send a list of browser tab URLs to email, Web mail, or the clipboard

• DON'T HAVE A HELP TAB IN MY MENU BUTTON. CANT EVEN COPY A URL IN MY ADDRESS BAR OR REFRESH IT ?

how on earth can you help people when all you do is direct them to another page to click on something that doesn't help. this new version is awful . i cannot even put a url address in my address bar, nor can i refresh the address bar as it won't highlight at all. i keep going to all sorts of help pages and they are no help at all. i have used firefox for years and never had so much trouble with anything. the worse thing is your support and not being able to talk to any about anything. as it is i have to go all over just to find maybe an answer to this.i am using a background theme that i used before the new updated version and had no problems with it. if your themes are not compatible then why have them ??? the address bar problem is not present if i get rid of the theme and use the plain boring theme that you have . all i want to know is why this issue is happening with the theme i am using. and if possible it would be nice to get an answer in my email so i don't have to click on a dozen help pages trying to find it . thank you ..
edit by a moderator: if you want to be able to discuss the issue with someone, don't do it in a shouting format (all uppercase), as this is considered rude on the internet - therefore i have converted your text into normal characters. in addition i have removed your address from public display since you will be notified per mail once somebody replies to the thread anyway. What is your support question? This? <br />CANT EVEN COPY A URL IN MY ADDRESS BAR OR REFRESH IT ?
A number of other users have mentioned a similar problem. <br />
Chances are that you have an add-on installed that isn't completely compatible with Firefox 29. You need to figure out the culprit and disable it until an update for that add-on is available.
If so, Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings, disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
