Address book is a little clunky

I would prefer to be able to select a single address in Address Book, copy it and paste it into a Word or Pages doc. That seems to be a pretty basic feature that Apple seemed to forget about. I don't necessarily just want to create a vcard but that's pretty much all I can do. Apple needs to work on this. Address Book is to quote the late, great Steve Jobs, a piece of...

John, I'd pretty much agree on that on most included Apple Apps.

  • What exactly is the process that syncs address book and calendar to google?

I have been syncing with google somewhat successfully for the past 6 months or so, but I am still confused about exactly how it's working.
I have my calendar set up as a caldav account, and it appears to be working fine.  I would like to know if calendar still syncs even if the calendar application is not open.  I tend to leave it open, but I don't know if that is necessary.  Also, I don't understand if calendar has anything to do with isync.  I am referring to the little isync icon in the menu bar.  Does a caldav account have anything to do with that, or does it sync on its own?
The address book is a little more confusing.  From what I have figured out, it only syncs manually by clicking the little isync icon in the menu bar.  Is that correct?  Is there no way for it to sync automatically like I think caldav accounts do in calendar?  Also, I wonder about the application here too.  Does the application have to be open for address book to sync with google?
Thanks, I hope someone can explain this a little better!
PS- I am actually running 10.6.8, but don't see an option for that in my product details.

I could sit here and do a bunch of tests, I suppose.  I'd have to disable my internet connection before opening the ical and address book applications to see if it syncs without being open.  Because I assume it could just refresh upon launching the application.  I wish someone could just gice me a clue here.  Anyone?

  • Restoring my ability to edit email addresses in my address book.

Every time I edit an address in the AB it doesn't reflect in Mail, it will change temporally then when I launch Mail again nothing is changed.
    Thank You.

On the Mac, Mail and Address Book are independent applications.
Is the dock (toolbar of icons for application shortcuts and currently running apps) showing? If so, there will likely be in it the address book icon - a little brown book with an "@" on it. Click this to run AB. Otherwise, click on the Home icon to bring up a directory window; in the list on the left side should be an icon for the Applications directory; click it to switch to the appls listing, and there double click the entry for AB.

  • Uwc address book problems (groups)

I downloaded and installed communications suite 5. As I was playing around with it (trying to get a better handle on the changes from what we have today), I discovered an oddity with the address book and groups in the "cooperate directory". I wonder if anyone else has noticed this as well as if anyone knows of any patches for commsuite 5.
    Details:
when I expend a group from from the cooperate directory, the members do not appear (though they do appear in a group I manually assemble in my personal address book). The little icon simply just changes directions no matter if members appear when the group name is clicked on or not.
Another oddity is that if people are associated with groups (in the directory) via "mgrpRFC822MailMember" attributes, they also do not show up as members of the group (when the group name is clicked on). Though, members which are associated via "uniqueMember" do appear in the member list.
This is a schema 1 directory which works well with our. I am unsure if these are incompatibilities with schema 1 vs schema 2 or if these are bugs in the product. Anyone have any insight?
    (hopefully that all made sense)

    Hi,
Excuse the ignorance. I assume a "CR" is a bug
report? How would I go about reading the bug report?Correct. As for reading the bug report itself I don't think you can read this from outside of Sun. I read through it myself and it definitely reads as the same issue, in this case though it affects 6.2 and is fixed in the next point releases:
    125813-01 (messaging server)
    125819-01 (uwc)
I recommend if you have a support contract that you log a support case via http://www.sun.com/service/online/ That way when the patches for 6.3 come out you will get them first.
I have not done any patching (I can't find any
patches for Comm suite 5). It is possible we are at
the same patch level? There aren't any patches yet available - so if you are running the GA release (and there is no reason to think you are not, then chances are you are running the same patch level).
    Regards,
    Shane.

  • Address Book Picture Sizes

Is there any way to make the Address Book pictures a little bigger? I know you can zoom in on the picture, but those thumbnails are so tiny I can barely see who it is, and it often gets distorted by focusing on a twinkle in the eye that makes it look like they have no pupil, and that sort of thing. Any way of making the picture bigger?

Not at present. Suggest it to the developers. (OS X Feedback)

  • AdobeSend vs AdobeSendNow - file size, address book and link availability control?

Another user commented and would like answers to these questions, please.
What is the biggest file size for AdobeSend - can't seem to find any information on this. AdobeSendNow had a limit of 2 GB.
With AdobeSendNow, we used to be able to control how long the link is valid for to recipients - what about AdobeSend?
Will an address book be available for the AdobeSend like it did for Adobe SendNow?
    Thanks.

I want my desktop version back!!     Just not a fan yet of this much more time consuming and clunky product.
What were you guys thinking?   Why did this new product NOT provide the same "outlook"  or  other connection to our address books?
Now I must have my address book open, copy addresses in to the tiny little window provided on the web page,
and type in every recipient's name.   I can no longer draft my message & select a group of individuals to receive reports from my e-mail
account in outlook; then select to use the ADOBE SEND FUNCTION.
On the web, it is so inefficient and risky to try to manuever in the tiny little screens that are provided..
There is not enough room in the "box"  verfity the address is "actually" entered in correctly.
And, trying to send to a "group" is even more taxing.   Having to manually enter the addresses makes no sense and
just begs for an wayward e-mail.
The desktop version was soooo much more efficient and seamless to operate.
Maybe you should let us decide which one to use until you get this new product functioning at its highest level.
It is definitely as step down.   You should not assume everyone want to be or is working in the "cloud"....
I am eager to hear if this issue is being addressed so I will know whether to renew or not?
    Thanks.

  • Address book not updating/odd sync issues

I've been fighting with this for about a week now. We are looking to simply have a shared address book for our office. We have one windows XP machine, but we aren't even worried about that at this point. He's actually on a macbook pro, so we'll likely end up running him on parallels eventually. Other then that, its strictly macs with the most up to date versions of the OS. I figured from the literature, it'd be a matter of creating an address book on the server and hitting "share", but reading around, it seems I'm not the only one having issues.
I set up our iCal by creating a user and set up our calendar. I was able to use the "delegation" tab under the accounts preferences to allow all the users in our office to view and edit the calendar. It's a little clunky, but overall not terrible. It works great. Updates come within 10 seconds to everyone.
I figured Address Book would be the same setup, but no such luck. I did the same process, but there isn't an option to delegate. We have three groups of contacts in our Address Book. Customers, Suppliers, and Employees. When I got it all up, one computer would get one group, another's wouldn't' get anything, and someone else might get two of them. If anyone edited anything, no one else got it. Where am I going wrong here?

    O.K. I think I know what's wrong - - although I don't know how to fix it.
When I look under Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars, I have two accounts:
a 'MobileMe' account, that has Mail, Contacts, Calendars and Bookmarks listed underneath it in smaller font, and a second account, named 'office', which has only Mail listed underneath.
When I'm syncing, I'm successfully getting any new emails (from my 'office' account on my MacBook Pro), but no new Contacts, etc., are coming across.
I seem to be locked into this mobileme account, which isn't working right. I did check mobileme's 'cloud' page (if that's how you describe it), and my newly added Contacts are there sure enough. They just don't get copied across when I sync.
Is there a way to sync without using mobileme? Or changing my mobileme account so my default account gets new Contacts as well as new mail?
    Thanks, malcolm

  • Syncing Mac Address Book to multiple iPhone users?

After updating my iMac to Mavericks I'm unable to sync my Address Book contacts to iPhones via USB sync.
Our usage model is that we have one set of Address Book contacts on a Mac for everyone at home (easier to maintain) and then we create unique Address Groups for each family member. In the past we used the Info tab in iTunes to specify which address group should sync with which iPhone. It worked well.
With the update to Mavericks the Info tab is gone. Apple wants users to sync their contacts via iCloud.
Security concerns notwithstanding, I don't know how to do it. How can a family of iPhone users, each with a different Apple and iCloud ID, sync to the same Address Book?
    Thanks

Thank you to Gemariah for the suggestion that I should seek to import Contact details via Yahoo but to be honest whilst that may be indeed a valid work-around it is nothing if not clunky.
I have discovered that the PocketMac software is nothing to do with RIM although it is directly linked off their web-page: PocketMac do not appear to offer any real support and conversation with my network provider [ Vodaphone ] suggests that they regard the PocketMac software as little short of useless and a major source of problems.
Certainly in my experience, it is useless: it has duplicated some entries and will not allow the additional entries to be deleted. Clearly one can only hope that the RIM software which they are advertising for release in September will solve the problem but given that there is no way in which one can talk directly to RIM other than via a chargeable conversation I wonder whatb the chances are of their version being any better. I just wish that I could treat my clients in such an arrogant manner and still make money!
I would suggest that unless you want to spend time beating your head against a brick wall, do not use PocketMac software. It is a rubbish product, with support to match.

  • My computer has been infected with a Trojan Horse.  It has completely taken over my Mac email account and was sending out malicious email to everyone in my address book.  At the same time it infected my iPhone---I am no longer able to receive or send emai

My computer has been infected by a Trojan Horse.  It has taken over my Mac email account and began sending out malicious emails to everyone in my address book.  I cleared out my MAC address book and began using my AOL email account. It took a few days and then my AOL email account was infected and has now been send out malicious email to all my contacts for over a month.  It has also infected my iPhone--I am no longer able to send or receive emails on my iPhone.  Also, once the Trojan Horse began using my AOL email it completely blocked me from using my MAC account by sending never ending popups asking for my email password to access my MAC email account, but it never accepts my pass word.  The TH has also slowed down everything on my computer.  It's like I am working on an old PC with dial up connection instead of the high speed digital connection that I have.  The little color wheel spins constantly as I wait for sometimes over a minute for a page to pull up.  If it pulls up at all.  I have tried to use the 2 disks that came with my computer to completely remove everything on my computer and then reinstall all the programs, but I am not allowed to sweep my computer clean.  I thought maybe my disks that came with my computer were defective so I called Apple and they sent me 2 new disks.  I am not able able to clear my computer with the 2 new disks either.  I have done this before successfully so it's not something new to me.  I do remember when I believe my computer became infected:  I had googled an unusual sewing term, and I was opening what appeared to be legitimate sites, when all of a sudden a pop up appeared that said that my computer had been infected.  I immediately shut my computer off, but it was too late.  I downloaded a virus program for Mac, and it has never found a virus or problem at all.  I think it is part of this Trojan Horse, but I am unable to delete it from my computer.  It refuses to uninstall.  The Mac Trojan Horse is real and it is terrible.  If anyone has any suggestions for me I would be very appreciative,
    Beth

  • New SMS text not going directly to address book

In my messages folder, when I select  "Compose SMS Text" the options are limited to Phone or Email, and not my address book. I did not change any settings, this just appeared out of the blue. Could anyone here help?
    Solved!

I'm a little confused by your statement, could you try and re-phrase it please
In the meantime, try a Battery Pull:
    1. Remove the battery while phone is turned on
    2. Wait a few seconds before inserting it again
    3. Allow the long boot up process to finish (takes a few minutes usually)
This clears most software issues that occur on blackberries from time to time. You could also use Quickpull, a free app that simulates a battery pull without physically removing the battery: http://software.crackberry.com/product.asp?id=27660
A battery pull reclaims memory lost during application usage and clears minor software errors that creep in over time. The blackberry runs an OS just like your PC runs windows and the battery pull is the equivalent of a reboot/restart on your computer.

  • What to do when your address book disapears. For Blackberry Pearl.

I went nuts when this happened to me. Not that I didn't have a back-up, you should ALWAYS have a
back-up of all your info. I knew that all my contact info was still there, because when someone called or
when I called someone on my address book, all their information still came up on my phone. So I knew it
was all there, but when I went to the address book itself, there was nothing there, and it simply said there
were no contacts. I even added a new one, and that was not showing up in the address book either. VERY
frustrating. So I called My service provider and begged for help. Being a new black berry user, I didn't
know squat about what to do, and I couldn't find anything online that helped me to fix this problem. So, if
this happens to you, (which I am told it happens to people a lot), Here's what you do to fix it....
First you make sure you have a back-up copy of all your backberry info using your blackberry desk top
program. after that, make sure that you blackberry is disconnected from your computer. Then go to the
options on your main menu, click the trackball. Then go to the Security Options menu, click the trackball.
Select General Settings, click the trackball. Now press the balackberry menu key on the left of the
trackball. Select Wipe handheld, click the trackball. Ok, I know thes sounds a little scarry, but trust me it
will all be ok. Once it resets everything your pnone wont work and it is going to look like all your info is
gone, but that's ok. Now go through the setup wizard like you did when you first got your blackberry to set
it all up. you don't have to add in all your info or setup all your emails, you can re-enter all your info later,
and the emails will automatically be re-setup when we are all done. Now To get all your stuff back on the
phone, connect the blackberry up to your computer, and go to your blackberry desk top program. In the
desk top program, go to back-up and restore and restore your most recent back-up. Now click the
blackberry menu on the left of the trackball, select register now, click the trackball. Go to the options
menu, click the trackball. Go to advanced options, click the trackball. look on the next menu for Host
Routing Table, click the trackball.  Now with your blackberry dial *228 and select option (1), to get your
phone in service again.   Now go online and go to: (http://www.blackberry.com/go/vzw), make sure you
have your blackberry.com password and user name and your blackberry pin number. If the user name and
password you have do not work, than unfortunately you'll have to call your service provider to help you
with that. For Verizon, the number to call is: 1-800-922-0204. It's best if you do not call them from your
blackberry. Now what you want to make sure is that you have all your email passwords etc. Now from
here, you can either have your service provider send to your phone the Service Books, or you can just get
the info for the website I gave so that you can log onto it and send the Service Books to your blackberry
on your own. If you have your service provider help you, this is where you'll need your email passwords,
because before you send the Service Books to your blackberry you'll need to revalidate all your emails
accounts by clicking on the red symbol on the left, and it will ask for your passwords and take care of all
the rest. Once you have all your email accounts re-validated, then you can send the Service books to your
blackberry. You'll see the link on the left upper menu of the page that says Service Books, click on it and
wahlah.  Now give it about 15 seconds or so. go to your black berry. Turn it off, and back on again.
Now turn your blackberry off and on again. When it comes back on follow all the menu promptings etc.,
and bingo you got your address book back.

    Welcme to the Frums!
Sometimes when the address books disappear, a filter has gotten turned on.
Go to address book>> menu >>> filters >>> and make sure nothing is checked in either box.

  • I get an error trying to use Apple Address Book with Word Mail merge - says it cannot open data file?

I am running MS Word 2011, latest Mac OS, and trying to use the Mail Merge option with the Apple Address Book as the data source.
However whenever I select the Apple Address Book as the data source, I get the error "Word was unable to open the data source".
    Anybody got any idea why?
    Thanks for your help

I am guessing you could have solved this little problem already but perhaps someone else may benefit:
I struggled with the same problem - not being able to use Mac Address Book (i.e. Contacts) with Word 2013 for mac mail-merge (on Mountain Lion and, now, on Mavericks) - with the exact same error message reported by Klausngigtoas above .
So I read lots of techie stuff on forums which passed a nice few hours but didn't help. Finally, with slumped, defeated expression, I gave up.
But I just now (such is life) I accidentally stumbled upon the simple solution:
    1. Enter System Preferences and click Security & Privacy.
    2. Select the Privacy tab and then on Contacts on the left hand panel.
    3. In the right hand panel ("Allow the apps below to access your contacts") just tick the Contacts box.
    4. And Voilà! - at least it worked for me - hope it does for you.

  • How can I restore my Address Book from Time Machine, iCloud keeps overwriting

This was all done on my MacBook Pro, using Mavericks updated.  With the Address Book, and iCloud.
Ok, this is really a mess.  I have close to a 1,000 contacts in my address book.  I'm not going to manually sort them.  I have a bunch of groups in my address book.  These groups are very important, and not something simple to sort out.  I have already read this thread:  https://discussions.apple.com/message/18790074?searchText=How%20can%20I%20restor e%20my%20Address%20Book%20from%20Time%20Machine,%20iCloud%20keeps%20overwriting# 18790074
My situation is similar, and yet a little different.
I accidentally deleted a group in my address book.  So, with my handy dandy Time Machine backup, I quickly went into Time Machine, and restored the group.  However, I was connected to the internet, and iCloud promptly deleted the nicely restored group.  So I went into Time Machine again, and restored the username/Library/Application Support/Address Book folder.  Again, opened the Address Book, was content to see my group was intact and there.  After about 20 seconds it disappeared before my very eyes.  I was now starting to get frustrated.  iCloud had again erased my ‘restored’ group.
I promptly disconnected from the internet, restored my address book, and exported a copy in abbu format.  I then reconnected to the internet, and as I expected, iCloud once again deleted my ‘restored group’.  I then imported my abbu ‘backup’ file, and everything was once again intact… for about 20 seconds before iCloud again deleted my group.
Ignorantly, I deleted everything in my address book (while connected to the internet).  I then allowed iCloud to update everything.  After it seemed like it was done (it doesn’t tell you what is going on).  I went ahead and imported my abbu file.  This again resulted in nothing in my address book.  I again disconnected from the internet, and imported the abbu file.  I then exported all my contacts and each group in the vcf format.  I started importing each group into iCloud.com online, and everything was working smoothly.  Then, it started getting errors, and not importing all the contacts.
OBVIOUSLY there is a bug, or problem, or something wrong here.  iCloud is being extremely stubborn, and extremely un-friendly to it’s user.  I’m kind of at my wits end with this.  If anyone has any ideas, I really could use some help  I think that iCloud could use some help too.  Perhaps some lessons in politeness.  Perhaps a lesson in ‘restoration.’ Perhaps a compatibility with Apples own Time Machine???  Please any help would greatly be appreciated!
    Shane

I don't know why you moved the app. Move the application back into your "Applications" folder which is where it belongs and should always stay. Then drag the app down to your Dock, if the Dock icon is not there already.
Now, open AddressBook. The click on the TM icon on your Dock. Now do you see the TM screen with AB open? Good. Use the TM time arrow back button until AB appears the way it used to be. Then click restore.

  • Importing Address Book From An Older Version To Leopard

I'm trying to import my address book from my old, G3 iMac running 10.1.5 to my new machine. All my address cards show the .vcf file extension, yet I can't import them. I get an error message that says, "No importable cards found". I tried switching from .vcf version 3.0 to 2.1 with no luck. I tried importing them as a text file, still doesn't work.
Any ideas on how I can import my addresses?

I was able to solve my problem with the help of a friend.
I found the Old Address Book database file under OS 10.1.5:
    Users->myusername->Library->Addresses->Address Book.addressbook
I pasted Address Book.addressbook to the new Address Book running under OS 10.5 in:
    Users->myusername->Application Support->AddressBook
The computer did a little conversion dance and everything appeared just fine.
    Hope this helps others.

  • Please Help! Suddenly unable to open Mail, Address Book etc

This morning when I woke up my IBook my Mail was still open from yesterday. When I tried to open ICal it kept crashing. So I restarted and then suddenly ITunes, Mail, Address Book and ICal would not open at all!! (However, it seems that iPhoto, Appleworks, Safari etc is fine).
I do have a IPhone, but haven't synced in a week or so. Not sure that that would be relevant at all.
The other weird thing that has happened, is that all the info on the top right hand corner of my menu bar (my airport, date, weather snitch, spotlight etc) disappeared a few weeks ago. It has been blank there ever since. When I just did a check of those applications ( internet connect, weather snitch) they also didn't open now.
Thanks in advance for any advice at all...
BTW, I just ran verify disk, and it stopped with this error message:
" the underlying task reported failure on exit" - The volume needs to be repaired.
Really hoping that someone can help me with this!
    Message was edited by: ALSVLA

Hi ALSVLA, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
