ADF Faces or APEX for a lightweight browser-based front end.

I'm tasked with prototyping a lightweight browser based front end to display consolidated customer information. It needs to be callable from half a dozen disparate and mostly non-Oracle applications. The idea is that each application will have a button that can kick off a browser session to see a data-warehouse sourced view of a customer. Forms10g (where my experience lies) seems too resource heavy for the constant opening/closing of this little application but APEX looks like a good fit with not too steep a learning curve and the guys on the forum thuoght it was well suited. ADF Faces seems to have a steep learning curve given that I don't have any Java experience but a small view-only app like this might be a good place to gain experience useful for more complex apps. My question is whether ADF Faces is a goot fit for this sort of task. If anyone has used ADF Faces and APEX I'd be very grateful for their thoughts.

Just a couple of further questions. As a company we're stuck on Internet Explorer 5.5 for another 18 months or so (>5,000desktops!). Does that exclude ADF Faces as an option given the prune-faced geriatric nature of the browser we're using (we're also on NT4.0 :-) Also, they're likely to be in and out of this screen like a fiddler's elbow and I'm wondering if the start-up effort using ADF Faces is likely to be significantly more resource intensive than an APEX equivalent.
My background is Oracle*Forms (since 2.0) and it would be nice to make a start on a technology that could be used in place of Forms in more complex apps - I just need to be able to justify the likely increased costs to people focused predominantly on this project's costs.

In my mind I've already marked-down the only front-end tool I have experience of - Forms10g as being too resource intensive to be continually started up and closed down (plus the initial potential JVM download to locked-down PC's). That leaves me with a couple of options (as far as I can see) - APEX or ADF Faces. I'm slightly worried about the steep learning curve for a J2EE environment plus the possible compatibility issues with ie 5.5 ( I know, I know ). And finally, my question - I've got a good feeling about it but does APEX seem like a good fit for this sort of task?

Chris - They want to be able to hit a button in these other applications and see a browser window pop-up (quickly!), view the customer details (composite picture sourced from a data warehouse) then close the browser window and go back to their app. Needs to be lightweight for speed so APEX seemed a good idea.
Denes - Thanks. I'm thinking that the users will regularly open this browser session from their app then close the APEX window to return - probably time and time again. Did you find that establishing a connection and getting the page up made it slow. Is there something I should concentrate on to make sure that aspect performs?

Trinidad faces and JSF faces not optimized for android web-browser.

We are developing Mobile based application using Oracle ADF Mobile (Jdev R1). Trinidad Faces and JSF faces are rendering optimized on all smart phones (i.e. iPhone, Blackberry and windows) except Android (linuxwebkit) web browser. On Android web-browser page rendering as render in desktop browser.

Just search for "Android" and you see what I mean. As you mention the base technology is Apache MyFaces Trinidad and the version of Trinidad thus determines the support for mobile devices.
Apparently JDeveloper 11g R2 uses the Trinidad libraries (JSF 2) that support the Android platform while JDeveloper 11g R1 does not.
Given that Trinidad 1.2 supports Android (though it might not have been tested as mentioned here: http://myfaces.apache.org/trinidad/devguide/mobile.html) you should be able to create your own skin for Android as documented here: http://myfaces.apache.org/trinidad/devguide/mobileSkinning.html
The RequestContext object in Trinidad returns the calling agent and you may want to check first if this returns Android. If it does then creating and applying a skin is easy to do.

Browser compatibility for Adobe AIR (browser-based version)

Hi there,
I'm using RoboHelp 10 to create the browser-based version of Adobe AIR. My understanding is that this version of AIR uses Flash for some of the navigation, such as the table of contents.
Can anyone else share their findings on which browsers and Flash plug-ins will reliably display the browser-based version of AIR? I've found that it displays fine on IE 8, but not IE 9, and not Google Chrome (version 23).
Any advice would be appreciated.

I've spent more time looking at my project and I am not getting the results I need.
To summarize, I've created a browser-based version of Adobe AIR that is a local copy. It runs fine on IE 8, but not Google Chrome (version 23) or IE 9. I've also tried created a very small second RoboHelp project and I get the same results--the index.htm page is blank in Chrome and IE 9.
In Chrome, I've double-checked that it is running Flash version 11.5.31.5. I've noticed that Chrome changes my file path (see attached screen capture).
I'm at a loss to figure out why this is not displaying, as expected.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

CD / Download for installing BI 7.0 Front-end components?

We have just upgraded a test system from BW 3.1 to BI 7.0.
Our basis team also upgraded my SAP GUI to 640.
This GUI 640 installation also upgraded the Business Explorer components. However, Query Designer & Web Application Designer are now just on Release 3.5. Apparently all the latest patches of 640 have been installed. Is GUI 7.00 available somewhere?
I would like to know where I can get the new BI 7.0 components of Query Designer, WAD & Report Designer. Ideally, I would like to install on my PC the legacy 3.x components as well so that I can maintain the existing BW systems that have not upgraded.

Hi Adrian,
When you run the GUI setup with 640, you get the option for which items you want to install. If you choose the BI items, then the new Analyzer, WAD, Report Designer etc.. get installed. You may have to re-run the installation and choose these components.
Latest Front End Patches are available from <a href="https://websmp204.sap-ag.de/swdc">SAP Software Distribution Centre</a>
On the left menu, go to Download > Support Packages and Patches > Entry by Application Group > SAP Frontend Components > SAP GUI for Windows > SAP GUI for Windows 6.40 > Win32 and download "Bw700SP09_900-10001615.exe".
This is the latest patch (FEP9), so you may want to go FEP802 instead.
If you can't find the GUI CD with installation components, they are also available here (Setup640 and GUI640).

Your 3.x tools will remain on the Start menu after you install the 'new' tools.

"No administrator found for the task" in the front end

Hi all,
My issue is, whenever approval request is raised from the front end ( JAVA WEB-DYNPRO), it triggers the workflow through the "sap_wapi_start_workflow" and when the workflow proceeds to the first level of approval, the front end application provides the approver with Approve and Reject options.
On click of approve, from the java webdynpro, the approve status is written in the container using "sap_wapi_write_container" and then a call is made to "sap_wapi_workitem_complete". Upon excution, the message line is "No administrator found for the task" and the return code is "1".
But if we do the same steps from the backend (R/3), the workitem is getting completed without any such error.
Please advice.

Hi Balaji,
I think I have an answer for you. This has happened with us when approving a WD java task using UWL (in our case for travel). The key is the return code of 1.
What has happened is this. The return code actually comes from the function SWW_WI_STATUS_CHANGE_NEW which is called deep in the WAPI wrapper. It means "infeasible_state_transition = 1".
This is due to the fact that after updating the container, your wapi call from web dynpro tries to change the workitem from status of "Ready" to status "Completed". This will not work.
What you will have to do is call "SWW_WI_STATUS_CHANGE_NEW" to set the status to 'SELECTED' beofre setting the item to complete.
The reason for this is that when you are executing from R3, the status change is done for you. When calling from the WD, no reservation of the workitem occurs.

Validation for FB01 to stop on Front end

Hi Team
I wanted to stop the user when user execute/select/typed FB01 in FRONT END.
But when its invoked by another transaction on the same user it should allow to proceed.
User are maintained in a seperate table
I beleive this is a common issue accross SAP FB01, do you have tested solutions for this?
I hope a validation with user action can enable this logic..but i am not sure.
can anyone give me some ideas on this, any different solution?

ADF Faces - Change style for menuTab component

How to change color for menuTab components (selected and enabled)?
I do not want to create new style, all I need is just change some colors and fonts for default oracle style.
I was able to change color for table, overridinf some styles in my css-file, but overriding
<af_menuTabs_selected> and <af_menuTabs_enabled> did not work, because on generated html-page menuTab components do not use any styles. Is there any workaround to change color of that component?

Thin browser based client for "workflow creation" UI, any suggestions?

Hello, we are building an automation software. We are planning to have a browser based front end. User will create a "workflow" like diagram user our User interface.
What is the best way to do this? If you have used bea weblogic workshop, the process flow diagrams is similar to what we are looking for. Basic idea is to have user generate this entire ddiagram on front end and we pass the resultant flow chart(workflow) as simple xml data to the backend for processing.
Is it possible using applets/pure-html or something similar?? Any already developed components available???

Well I haven't had any luck getting an iPhone to present an SSL certificate to an IIS7 ASP.Net webserver.
The same .p12 certificate works on IE7, PocketIE (WM6), Firefox and Safari (PC version). The website is set to Require an SSL certificate. From the Windows Mobile or PC browsers, you get a prompt for the client certificate. I have tried Nick's website and the iPhone will prompt to choose between his and my certificates, however with IIS7 you just get a 403.7 client SSL certificate required error.
I have turned on SSL tracing in HTTP.Sys and get the following (edited for length) :

Can't find Javadoc for ADF Faces components

I have tried to locate javadoc documentation for ADF Faces Java classes, but am not able to find anything. For example, the ADF Faces tag documentation for af:convertNumber has the following comment:
"Further more information see javadoc for oracle.adf.view.faces.converter.NumberConverter"
But I cannot find this javadoc anywhere on the OTN documentation site.
