Advanced Error handling

Hi all,
I am developing an error handling system for an extensive LabView application, unfortunately I can't  call it's purpose due to confidentiality.
I just graduated for my university degree in Applied Physics, and therefore I am pretty experienced with LabVIEW (got core 1,2 and 3).
The used synchonization technique is a queue-operated producer/consumer  handler. The testing set-up consists out of the following hardware:
- Keithley 2700 multimeter
- A Stanford SR830 Lock-in
- PI-Mercury 863 (Z-stage controller, for moving up and down)
- NI DAQ 6244
My Question is:
How can you make sure that you cover most errors with your error handling application? What would be a correct approach to find all possible errors that could occur during a measurement?
For example: I could disconnect the K2700 and start the application, then a VISA error is most likely to occur. Besides that I could disconnect the power supply of the hardware and start the application and see which error would occur then.
Is there some general kind of rule of thumb to find the possible errors which could occur in the set-up?
Thanks for your reply in advance.
Cheers,
San

Aha! Found it: https://decibel.ni.com/content/docs/DOC-20726
I think that was the presentation that I was trying to find earlier as it gives some information about actual strategies for dealing with errors and reporting them versus just how to wire up error wires and the general error handler.
As for your reply, you need to think about grouping sections of code and say to yourself "what should happen if an error occurs here?". You will probably end up identifying gating points in your code (e.g. at the end of a case)
As a couple of examples:
- During initialisation, if a device fails to initialise, should you retry and if so, how many times before giving up? Should you let the user attempt to reconfigure the device
- If you're using a queue based architecture and the reference gets destroyed
You end up having to analyse your code and saying "What if....?" a lot!
I think the errors boil down to something like the following:
- Critical application errors: A terminal error caused by a software bug such as accidentally releasing a reference to a main message queue. In this case you have to shut-down the software but you should report or log some information to help you debug the issue remotely!
- Device errors: Failed to initialise, device not present, lost connection, incorrect configuration - the software can't operate normally but maybe you could keep trying to re-initialise or allow the user to try to change settings rather than exit the application.
- User errors: User has misconfigured something such as entered an invalid path or selecting an incorrect file (type, format etc.) - in this case you should probably notify the user and let them try again.
- Known errors: errors that you expect might occur such as creating a folder that already exists - these would usually be ignored or handled in a case structure. Another example of this is errors out of 'close' subVIs in your exit case (the device might never have initialised or may have already shut down)
You'll never be able to catch every single error (and it's not possible to see all errors a VI might produce and you may want to generate your own errors) but you should try to properly handle (& rectify) errors that are more likely to occur (such as lost connection to a device because someone tripped over a serial cable) and leave the other errors to your general handler.
You also want to think about the experience for the end user of your software - something that the presentation linked above mentions. Chances are that the average user isn't going to be able to understand LabVIEW error codes and will be disappointed if the software just shuts down on launch because a device is missing.
There is no holy grail of error handling/reporting - it's something I'm always reading/learning about and try to apply that as much as I can in my applications!

  • Error handling in B1if

    Dear All,
    I searched the forum but could not find a full answer to my question.
    How can you handle errors in B1if?
    When something goes wrong the errormessage is displayed in the failure section of the message log.
    I found out that on the package design in the defintions section you can choose document "error handling".
    There you should be able to choose your error handling step.
    For now I only see the default error handling step.
    How can you create such a error handling step?
    Does somebody has some full documentation on this subject?
    I guess we must create a new step design with inbound type Predecessor or am I wrong?
    Thanks in advance for any help.
    Kind regards,
    Steven

    Hi Vijay,
    Create a package with your development in a step.
    Create a second step called for instance: errorhandling
    This errorhandling step must be of inbound type internal queue
    In the errorhandling step you can handle the error as you like... for example email it or save it in a user table in B1.
    The trick is:
    Go to package design - select your package - press definitions buttons and select error handling
    Here you select your errorhandling step instead of default error handling.
    Save everything.
    When you scenario goes into error during the processing the errorhandling step will be carried out.
    That is it.
    Kind regards,
    Steven

  • Servlet 2.3 error handling

              Hi,
              Once again, I have problems with the additions in Servlet 2.3's error handling.
              I'm looking at SRV 9.9.2.
              To be concrete, I need to catch every RuntimeException with an error-page which
              shows the source exception.
              According to SRV 9.9.2, I only need to configure :
              <error-page>
              <exception-type>java.lang.RuntimeException</exception-type>
              <location>/err-exception.jsp</location>
              </error-page>
              But with 6.1 beta, every NullPointerException for example is catched as a simple
              HTTP 500 error, without giving me the root exception. To have it catched by my
              /err-exception.jsp page, I need to explicitely configure it's type.
              Then I need to configure explicitely every RuntimeException sub-class...
              The addition in Servlet 2.3 SRV 9.9.2 was apparently done to avoid this (which
              is a good idea :) )
              Can you please implement this feature ?
              Thanks in advance

    This is already fixed for 6.1 SP1

  • ColdFusion.Ajax.submitForm error handler problem with AppleWebKit-based browsers

    All-
    When using an AppleWebKit-based browser (i.e. Safari or
    Chrome), the
    message argument of the Coldfusion.Ajax.submitForm error
    handler always contains the string "OK", regardless of what error
    was cfthrown by my CFM form handler.
    Recall that the signature for the error handler is this:
    MyFormErrorHandler = function( code, message )
    In other browsers (i.e. IE or Firefox), the
    message argument of the error handler properly contains the
    message that was cfthrown by my form handler.
    Can anyone offer any guidance for this problem? Thanks in
    advance for your help.
    -Josh

    I was testing on IE8, Windows7 Starter.  I don't have IE6 available to test on.  Can test on IE7 a bit later on, but I have to fart-arse around with a VM to get it ready, so I'll do that after work.
    I tested multiple submits both via clicking between the tabs within one main "request" as well as multiple entire requests (like via refreshing the whole browser window).  I had no problems.
    I think you're being quite optimistic ot expect AJAX stuff to work reliably on IE6.  IE6 crashes.  That's what it's most famous for doing.  One needs to expect crashes if one pushes it (push it anywhere than out the window, that is).  And your client company's IT dept should be lined up against a wall and shot for still running it.  That's professionally negligent IMO.  But... you probably don't need to be told that.

  • ADF Custom error handler not working.

    Hi All,
    i am using jdev version 11.1.1.5.0. i have created one custom error handler class in model layer which extend DcErrorHandlerImpl class.
    and do the entry in Databinding.cpx file
    *<Application ErrorHandlerClass="mypackage.classname"/>*
    i have override getDisplayMessage(BindingContext ctx, Exception ex) method to show SQL Exception which comes from database table trigger.
    code is following-
    package com.in.jagran.view.services;
        import java.sql.SQLException;
        import oracle.adf.model.BindingContext;
        import oracle.adf.model.binding.DCErrorHandlerImpl;
        import oracle.jbo.JboException;
        public class AclasErrorHandler extends DCErrorHandlerImpl {
          public AclasErrorHandler(boolean setToThrow) {
            super(setToThrow);
            System.out.println("Inside Error Handler class");
          public AclasErrorHandler() {
              super(true);
           // this(true);
           * Returns the message that will be reported to JSF for each error that occurs.
           * Returning "null" is the way the custom error handler signals that a given exception
           * should not be reported to the client.
          @Override
          public String getDisplayMessage(BindingContext ctx, Exception ex)
            if (ex instanceof oracle.jbo.ValidationException) {
              return super.getDisplayMessage(ctx, ex);
            else {
              // Extract and return the error message that has to be displayed
              Exception exception = ex;
              String message = "";
              // If this exception is an instance of JboException,
              // try to find the cause by recursing over the eventual causing exceptions
              if (exception instanceof JboException)
                Throwable[] exceptionList = ((JboException)exception).getExceptions();
                while (exception instanceof JboException
                        && exceptionList != null && exceptionList.length > 0)
                  exception = (Exception)exceptionList[0];
                  if (exception instanceof JboException) {
                    exceptionList = ((JboException)exception).getExceptions();
              // *** Special processing of SQLExceptions

              // Otherwise report the message of the lowest exception in the hierarchy
              else {
                message = exception.getMessage();
              return message;
        }but it is not working for me.
    thanks in Advance.

    yes i have used dubugger.
    i have set break point to following line-
    return super.getDisplayMessage(ctx, ex);
    if (ex instanceof oracle.jbo.ValidationException) {
            return super.getDisplayMessage(ctx, ex);
    }when atttribute validation done like i have attribute of type number and i have done the validation "must be greater than 0" now when i have given negative value control go to above line.
    and i have added following code also in handler class
            @Override
               public void reportException(DCBindingContainer dCBindingContainer,
                                           Exception exception) {
    System.out.println(exception.getMessage());
                       super.reportException(dCBindingContainer, exception);
                   }now when i have done commit operation control go to here and println statement print follwoing error on log window.

  • Error handling workflow not getting triggered

    Hi all,
    I'm creating a outbound IDoc. And for error handling workflow.. I created a organization structure in PPOME and assigned users. I gave this position number thus created in the partner profile in post processing permitted agent tab.
    But when the Idoc is in error, this is not coming to my inbox.
    Can someone please help me with this.. and let me know what went wrong.
    Thanks in advance.

    Here you need to be careful,
    if the agent assignment is not maintained properly, there may be a chance everyone in the organization will get the item.
    I hope you have created a single workitem for error handling. goto additional data-> agent assignment-> maintain. make sure the attribute is defined as general forwarding allowed. or you maintain the role/position/user/whatever.as the possible agents. still you dont get the result, debugging the default rule in the task ->default rule -> agent.
    hope this helps.

  • IDoc error handling using workflows

    Hi,
    I have a requirement to generate IDocs in the Source system and process them in the target system. The IDoc message type is HRMD_ABA. And I am using standard processes to generate them and post them using PFAL and RBDAPP01 program respectively.
    All this is working fine. But now I need to include error handling in the source and the target systems which would send mails to a User's Outlook mailbox whenever there is an error. I mean to say, we need more functionality than just monitor them through WE05 transaction.
    Can any one tell me how this can be achieved. I have been looking into the program RSEIDOCA which would send workflows to SAP Inbox, but I need to send it to Outlook Inbox.
    And I have heard that there is a workflow process which would help me to do this.
    All your answers would be highly appreciated.
    Thank you in advance,
    Sid.

    Hi,
    First Step:
    You have to maintain the e-mail-address in SU01 for required users.
    Second Step:
    SCOT Configuration
    Third Step:
    Depends on your SAP Version do configuration SWNADMIN
    Or  excuting the report RSWUWFML2 as the background job.

    Hey Vinoth,
    Do you want decide the recipient of the mail dynamically? am asking because if you give the USER NAME in the partner profile and when ever a IDOC fails a mail will automatically reach the user inbox automatically

  • Error Handling in IDoc

    Hi Friends,
       Can anybodytell me any procedure for Idoc error Handling (Restart and Recovery) of IDocs that occured in error status. What could be be the possible ways apart from BD87.Thanks in advance for ur gr8 help!!!

    It really depends on they type of error.
    For transactions that need data remediation, the preferred method of posting is via SAP Workflow (xaction So01 for the inbox).
    For things that did not post due to missing config, etc. use BD87 (assuming the config now exists).
    If you have specific questions post them and I will try to help.

    I solved the error I got when I wanted to save my form
    The edit and delete buttons also work correct...
    I only get the error mentioned above when I press the "new form" button, I created that button with the CreateXMLForms action group that I added in my Collection Grid renderer settings (option collection command group)
    Then I changed my form availibility (System administration ->system configuration ->KM->CM->form based publishing->form availibility->folder settings)
    I created the following folder settings:
    foldername//priority//path//forms to exclude//forms to include
    library//10 //documents/testlibrary//Smarties, QnA,SAP_APP_News//library
    News //10 //documents/News//smarties, library, QnA// SAP_APP_News
    QnA //10 //documents/testQuestionAnswer// SAP_APP_News, smarties, library //QnA
    Smarties //10 /documents/testSmarties
    Did I do something wrong here? What can cause this error? In what direction should I search?

  • Content Server Error Handler

    I have an Intranet site let's say www.xyz.com and it has restricted access. So before anyone gets to the site, they have to be authenticated.
    If a users press "Esc" for authentication(cancells Authentication), then the Site Studio Error handler is not triggered, but it returns a content server message
    "Content Server Request Failed
    Node access denied "
    How can I customize this? - basically to add a custom message.
    Pleast take a look the screen shot:

  • Error Handling in Oracpe form 9.4.0

    Hi,
    Have you got good documentaion about error handling in Oracle form 9.0.4? If yes, Could you let me know?
    Many thanks
    Michael

    Michael,
    Although, link I'm listing here is for Forms 4.5, the concepts of Error Handling still apply as Forms Error Handling has not changed significantly.
    [Oracle Forms Developer and Forms Server Documentation|http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/forms.html]
    Select the "A32506_2      PDF           Forms 4.5 Advanced Techniques" option.
    You can also try the [Oracle9iDS Forms Developer Reference Guide|http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/forms/902docs/9iRefGuide.zip] from the [Link to Oracle Forms 10g (10.1.2), Oracle Forms 10g (9.0.4), and Oracle9i Forms (9.0.2) Documentation|http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/9i_forms.html]. This is a .zip file which contains the "Forms 9i Reference Guide" pdf file.
    Hope this helps.

  • Error Handling for DSO

    Hi all,
    Is it not possible to give error handling options for DSO in Delta loads?
    I have created a delta infopackage to load data from Order Line Item (2LIS_11_VAITM) into a DSO.
    But the error handling gives only option 'No Update ,No reporting'.
    I want to give the option 'Valid Records update, reporting possible (request green)' option.
    Please let me know whether any setting needs to be done to make this option available.
    Thanks in advance.
    Meera

    Check this help - self explanatory - trying checking F1 thats very informative and self explantory most of the times
    Switched off
    If an error occurs, the error is reported as a package error in the DTP monitor. The error is not assigned to the data record. The cross-reference tables for determining the data record numbers are not built; this results in faster processing.
    The incorrect records are not written to the error stack since the request is terminated and has to be updated again in its entirety.
    No update, no reporting (default)
    If errors occur, the system terminates the update of the entire data package. The request is not released for reporting. The incorrect record is highlighted so that the error can be assigned to the data record.
    The incorrect records are not written to the error stack since the request is terminated and has to be updated again in its entirety.
    Update valid records, no reporting (request red)
    This option allows you to update valid data. This data is only released for reporting after the administrator checks the incorrect records that are not updated and manually releases the request (by a QM action, that is, setting the overall status on the Status tab page in the monitor).
    The incorrect records are written to a separate error stack in which the records are edited and can be updated manually using an error DTP.
    Update valid records, reporting possible
    Valid records can be reported immediately. Automatic follow-up actions, such as adjusting the aggregates, are also carried out.
