Advanced Settings of Apple ProRes Codec Interlace Checkbox

When exporting a Quicktime movie with ProRes HQ codec, how crucial is the checkbox in the Advanced Setting Tab labeled interlaced?
I have been told it is simply metadata while others have told me its crucial to the interlacing of a file. I just need some clarification. Thanks
-Luther

If you are working in a 1080i sequence and need to export a 1080i movie do not use Custom Settings, it will send it through an unnecessary conversion.
Only use Custom Settings if you need to convert to a different compression codec or image size, and if that's the case, I'd still export with current settings and convert using Compressor.
But to answer your original question, the interlaced box must be checked to maintain interlacing. For exporting to HD video, Interlacing should be set to Top Field First. If it is not checked it will de-interlace (and poorly, outside Compressor) your exported video.

  • Are the Apple ProRes Codec's already installed in Final Cut Pro X or do I have to download them separately

I am new to Final Cut Pro.  I recently bought Final Cut Pro X.  Enjoying it.  I cannot seem to find anywhere if the Apple ProRes family of codec come included in Final Cut Pro X or do I have to buy and download them separately?
    I have 10.08.5 operating system

That it works in iMovie is irrelevant to FCP. Has nothing to do with ProRes codecs. Absolute crap web site. Zero information about the media these things shoot. Absolute incompetence.
    From their web site:
Depending on what computer system you are operating on - Mac or PC, we can suggest a few video editing software packages:
If you're taking your first steps in video editing, iMovie (iOS) or Sony MoviEZ (windows), will be good options. Both are fairly simple to use, don't require you to convert your files, and are either free or very affordable.
Windows Movie Maker is another free option, but requires you to convert your files to a different format, such as .wmv.
Quicktime pro is the next step, and although it isn't free, it's very affordable.
Sony Vegas Pro (windows), and Adobe Final Cut Pro/Premiere (iOS/windows) are great options at the more professional end of the spectrum. These are fairly expensive, and are most suitable for users with a reasonable level of editing experience.
Say what? Adobe Final Cut Pro?
Maybe if you can open one of these files in the QT player you could get some real information about this media.

  • MP4 to Apple ProRes codec

    Hi all!
    Just a quick query here.
I have a GoPro HD Hero sports camera which shoots at MP4. As FCP doesn't like the format I have converted to Apple ProRes using good old MPEG Streamclip.
I had roughly 40GB of rushes and once converted it has taken the folders file size to over 200GB!
Any reason why such a massive jump?
    Cheers!
    GK

    Cheers for you replies
I did think it'd be because ProRes was less compressed but to jump up so much made me ask. It just seemed excessive that's all.
Studio X - Cheers but I do run all my media from an external Western Digital 2TB Firewire drive, have always done so. I shall certainly be deleting the ProRes transcode once the job is done.
    Many thanks

  • Sequence Settings for "Apple Lossless" codec !?!?

    Help,
I am editing a project and the material was delivered to me in the "Apple Lossless, stereo, 44100 khz DV, 720x480 (640x480), millions
Is there a Sequence settings I can use to edit this without having to render it in the timeline ?!?
    Many thanks,
    David Berry

o maybe FCP is only able to work in certain formats without having to compress ?o maybe FCP is only able to work in certain formats without having to compress ?
All the formats in the EASY SETUP are what it works with basically. But you can create custom setups..but they will NOT be realtime. That is what that trick is all about. If that trick doesn't work, then it is a format that FCP isn't gonna work with without recompressing. But audio still needs to be 48Khz 16-bit aiff files.
There are other NLEs out there that do this...Vegas, SpeedRazor...you can look into using them if you are constantly going to be dealing with odd codecs.

  • Why is the image brighter after converting H264 to Apple Prores 422 in Compressor ?

    Hello -
Very strange situation, keep reading please!
I am using Compressor to convert H264 1080p footage from a D600, to Apple Prores 422HQ for editing. Normal.
I am using the default Quicktime Settings named "Apple Prores 422 (HQ)".
The converted file is a bit brighter than the original... Why is this even possible! I find this a bit problematic because I'm loosing some details in the whites, at a way too early stage for signal alterationt!
So I tried different other stuff that you will find interesting:
    • changing gamma correction in the codec settings had no effect
    • I can see the change happening already in the Preview window
    • and this is the best one : if I apply a resize, to anything, like 1919 X 1079, or 1280 X 720... then the color change does not occur, even when exported! If I apply a resize to the same size, then the output is brighter again.
I am proof checking in Quicktime 7 of course, with "FCP compatibility" enabled and disabled.
I know this is a hot topic and there are many unsolved aberrations like this around this topic, but maybe there is something I don't get ?
    Thanks

Apple are so thoughful for making us loose the discussion we clicked on after we log in..
Alex CVideo > I am so happy that you wrote about this
Yes: this is the exact problem. Very nice screencap, this is exaclty it (even if I said it 2 times now).
I have a little secret for you:
I read in another discussion saying that he had this problem too.
The only time I ever did in the entire Internet.
    here it is :
this guy re-installed her entire system
mac os + final cut systems
    and this time it worked.
Right now I prefer to convert to 1079p than risk this entire operation even it it worked 100% lol
    At least not right now
but maybe you will be boosted up enough to give it a try
Good luck to all of us  and thanks again to Apple for these great moments we spend together talking about their wonderful mysteries

  • Apple Intermediate codec or Pro Res 422

Just out of interest, is there a clear winner between capturing using AIC or PR 422 when working with HDV footage? The final output will be a SD DVD. I am assuming that AIC will create smaller files?
If I capture using either, can I still use idvd or will compressor > studio Pro be the only route for me?
    Thanks
    Stuart

Gotcha ... well there's nothing wrong with that workflow per se. My suggestion is only that one doesn't need to transcode everything prior to capture but rather only those sections that are actually used in the final edit (ie transcode it at export). Every action has its pro's and cons tho, the capture as ProRes method would result in media files around 6x bigger than that of HDV or DV ... as long as you have the storage capacity to handle that, and as long as those drives are sufficiently fast enough to deal with the vastly increased data rate (for possibly multiple simultaneous streams of the same during editing) then you're good to go. With the right equipment, editing in native ProRes is a breeze. The capture as HDV and edit as HDV (with renders as ProRes) means much smaller file sizes / lower data rates, so more modest equipment can easily handle it. The downside would be that when rendering in the timeline (or for export) your render times would be slightly longer as the app still needs to deal with the more computationally intensive HDV codec as its source (although the target for the render is the less intensive ProRes) ... of course, this is still very much faster than rendering/conforming back to HDV!
The choice ultimately is yours, and if your client is happy to let you experiment then I'd encourage you to do so and see which works best for you and your set up. I know of those who do exactly as you've been advised in your training, others who's preference is to capture as native HDV and then edit with that directly in a fully ProRes timeline ... but for me, my preferred workflow is as follows:
Choose the appropriate HDV Easy Setup and then Log and Capture the footage.
Create and open a new sequence, open the Sequence Settings window > Render Control tab and set the Render codec to ProRes 422
Edit ... and when the edit is complete choose Export > Quicktime Movie w/ settings as Apple ProRes 422 ( +not Current Settings+ )
Take that exported movie into Compressor (or DVDSP) for making your SD DVD

  • How do I export to Apple ProRes 1920x1080 422 HQ

I need to export an HD Premier Pro CC project to Apple ProRes 1920 X 1080 422 HQ for broadcast. There are no options for this or any Apple ProRes codecs. Can someone please help me? This is a standard broadcast format. I loved editing my first Adobe Premier Pro project until this happened.

  • Can I combine codec m2v1 with apple ProRes 422 (HQ) in same FCP X project?

Can I combine codec m2v1 with apple ProRes 422 (HQ) in same FCP X project?
Everything else is same.  29.97, fps, 1920 x1080, Linear PCM, 48kHz, mono, .mov
If not, could I add the logo animation after outputting to compressor using QuickTime 7?
I'm re-wrapping footage from Canon XF100, which is why m2v1.  I like working this way to preserve original footage.
I just had my logo animated and designer matched everything except the m2v1.  Providing ProRes 422 (HQ)
Thank you for your thoughts.  I'd like to avoid changing my camera footage to Apple ProRes 422 (HQ).

    Hi Mary,
    I'm new to FCPX too!
When creating a new project, if you click on Use Custom Settingsand then ckick on the Custom checkbox in Video Properties, you can specifyexactly what you want!
If you need to change it after the project was craeted, I found that you can click and highlight on the project in the Project Library window, then go over to the "info" button . The Properties window will expand from the right side (above the "info" button . With Properties selected it will show you the present settings, if you need to change those settings, click on the icon of the WRENCH on the bottom of that dialog box (Properties). You can then change your settings.
    Good luck, and happy cutting!

  • Audio drop-out in FCPX with 1920x1080 & 2048x1240p @ 24p (codec Apple ProRes 4444 (Linear PCM))24p

    Hi all...
    I'm new to this forum.
Is there an audio issue (drop-outs) with FCPX (ver 10.1.2) for 1920x1080 24p, 1080p HD & 2048x1240 24p (2k) - note: films in FCPX are in codec Apple ProRes 4444, Linear PCM?
Very recently I've been working on a show reel and I have imported a file (short film) to snip out a section to add to the show reel.
I set the project to the film's settings i.e.. "set based on first video clip"...(1920x1080 24p, 1080p HD).  When I play the film in FCPX the audio "hic-cups"..."dips to silence"..."drops-out" briefly (up to 0.5 secs in duration) and very frequently all the way through (approx 15 mins long film)...note: audio set is at stereo 48kHz. The audio monitors on the right hand side also show the dip taking place (if it's a long enough drop-out).
I also have a version of the film in 2048x1240 24p at 2k, again Stereo 48kHz...and this does the same audio "drop-out" all the way through.  I'm unsure what other formats will create this problem i.e. higher or lower aspect ratios than those above.
Is this a software and/or OS issue?  Or a hardware issue?  Or both!?
    About This iMac details:
    iMac 27 inch: OS X ver 10.9.4
Processor: 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 32 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MB
    Fusion Drive 3.12 TB
Final Cut Pro X was bought & installed with this iMac back in Feb 2014
    FCPX version: 10.1.2
Note also:  I used Compressor (ver 4.1.2) to convert the files (movies) above to Apple ProRes 422 HQ, Linear PCM and the issue disappeared - the audio and visuals played with no problems.  All films play with no issue when opened in QT player.  They are also fine when exporting from FCPX.  The issue only occurs (as far as I can tell) within FCPX when editing or playing the audio there.
    Has anyone encountered this problem?
    Kind Regards,
    Hakan

    Hi Luis,
    Thank you for that.
Seems like you have a point about the "hardware" issue.  I'm unsure (new to it all) at what data rate my (er...wonderful) fusion drive provides FCPX for smooth playback - or where I can find that info on the iMac.  Playing back movies in the 422 HQ codec seems to have no issues (when I converted the movie from 4444 HQ).
But playing the full 4444 HQ, the picture is smooth, but the audio has these drop-outs - even with "best performance" option ticked. Interesting that the audio suffers, not the picture in FCPX - so not sure what's going on there. I also read - perhaps - that to play a smooth ProRes 4444 HQ movie in FCPX the data rate should be min of 500 Mbs (based upon About Apple ProRes) for HD movies and up (i.e. 2k).  ProRes 422 HQ needs a data rate of 220 Mbs - so that is my upper-limit to smooth video&audio playback with the current system I have, I guess.
Does anyone recommend a fast USB3 or Thunderbolt drive (500Mbs+) where I am able to run 4444HQ movies with no issues to picture or sound (away from the fusion drive)?

  • TS1363 I'm trying to hook up my new Apple TV, but can't find the advanced settings in iTunes. Where is it?

The Apple TV says change the settings in "Advanced settings", but I can't find "Advanced settings" in iTunes anywhere.

You might need to bring up the menu bar first.
If you're using version 11.0.1.12, click on the wee boxy icon up in the top-left corner of your iTunes to see the "Show Menu Bar" control, as per the following screenshot:
Now you should be able to find the duplicates thing in the View Menu.
(If you're still using iTunes version 11.0.0.163, you'd need to update to 11.0.1.12 to get the Display duplicates control.)
EDIT: Sorry, in the initial version of this reply, I said the Show Duplicate items was in the File Menu. It's in the View Menu in version 11.0.1.12.

  • No settings for Apple Lossless Audio Codec found in Compressor

For archiving reasons I have to convert many audio files to Apple Lossless (ALAC). So I thought it would be easy using Compressor 4 and and a suitable droplet. I was astonished that here are only settings for the following audio formats: AAC, AC3, AIFF, CAF, MP3 and WAV.
No Apple Lossless Codec in the settings?
Does anyone know how to create ALAC files

    Thomas A. wrote:
This setting generates a QuickTime file with the extension .mov
Of course it does. Why would that be a problem? "Apple Lossless" is not a file format, it's a codec.
OK, if I change the extension manually to m4a it seems to be an ALAC file, but I am not sure if it a "correct" one in regard to the specifications.
There is no "ALAC" file format specification. What are you going to use the files for?
ALAC isn't specified at all. The audio codec is called "Apple Lossless", and it is a set of algorithms to encode audio data, and a specification for a bitstream of audio data encoded such. It can be put in various containers, the most common being MPEG-4 and Apple Quicktime, but nothing will stop you from using AVI, .mkv, .ogg or anything else as the container format.
If you're unhappy with Compressor, which only seems to offer the QuickTime container format for Apple Lossless-encoded audio, there might be other tools that will transfer it into another container while leaving the actual encoded data untouched.
Since the Apple Lossless codec is now free, mencoder might work, even for the encoding itself. I haven't checked MPEG Streamclip, Handbrake, VLC or others, which might also offer such options.
Quick tests didn't yield any success, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't work.
An alternative for lessless encoding is the "FLAC" (free lossless audio codec), which is usually stored in an ogg container file. I don't think Compressor offers that, although VLC does.
It seems that the exact thing you want is not readily available (i. e. mpeg-4 audio-only with Apple Lossless audio codec.)

    Thanks gang.
    Scott

    Scott,
Please clarify the problem. It sounds like you are getting the ProRes codecs in AE. Is the problem that:
You are not seeing all of the flavors of ProRes?
The Codec Settings button is not enabled?
    Here's what I see:
I have FinalCut's ProRes codecs installed on my 10.7 machine, but not on my 10.8 machine.
On both my 10.7 and 10.8 machines, I see all of the expected ProRes flavors in After Effects CC: Apple ProRes 422, Apple ProRes 422 (HQ), Apple ProRes 422 (LT), Apple ProRes 422 (Proxy), and Apple ProRes 4444.
On my 10.7 machine, the Codec Settings button is functional for all of these codecs. On my 10.8 machine, it is not enabled.
My machines show the expected result. More on that in a moment.
If this matches your experience, then AE and AME are operating as expected.
Why do you need to access the Codec Settings dialog for ProRes in AE? It sounds like you're trying to write interlaced video, which doesn't require the Codec Settings dialog.
To create interlaced video from AE, open the Render Settings and change Field Render to the desired value.
To create interlaced video from AME, change the Field Order in the Video tab of the Export Settings dialog.
Here's why this is the expected result: the difference in how Adobe video apps handle ProRes betwen 10.7 and 10.8 is due to a change we made that allows us to use the ProRes encoders that are built into 10.8. On 10.7, and in CS6 and older versions, we can encode to ProRes only if the ProRes QuickTime component files are installed by FinalCut (or Motion or Compressor). But on 10.8, After Effects CC (and AME CC and Premiere Pro CC) bypasses that requirement and gets the encoders by using an API available via the OS; you don't have to install the Apple applications. The side effect here is that there's no access to the Codec Settings dialog; my understanding is that the 10.8 API doesn't give us access to that (meaning Apple removed it from the native encoder in 10.8).
The Animation codec doesn't enable the Codec Settings dialog, either. Most QuickTime codecs don't, and when they do it is usually a remnant of obsolete workflows. (For example, many eons ago some applications couldn't set the interlacing flag inside of the QuickTime file. The user would be expected to set the value for the codec by using the Codec Settings dialog.)

  • Upgrade FCE to FCP Apple Prores etc

    Hi,
I just purchased my first mac a few weeks ago. I was deciding between purchasing FCE and FCP, and ended up buying FCE. None of the specs I read mentioned the 1440x1080 resolution limit on importing AVCHD, nor did I read anywhere that the import codec was limited to a heavily compressed AIC codec rather than ProRes.
I've only had FCE since July 1. Now that I realize that issue, I want to upgrade to FCP, but called an apple store in the area and they said there is no upgrade path from FCE 4 to FC Studio. Is there any way I can do this? I really like the software, but these limitations were not mentioned. It said AVCHD support and when I read about that further, there was no mention of the bad compression and resolution limits. The footage looks about as good as 720x480 DV.
Is there any way that I could upgrade my FCE 4 to FC Studio and make use of the ProRes codec and I hope full 1920x1080 resolution?
    Thanks in advance!
    Adnan Hussain

    Adnan,
I am very interested in your post as a new user of FCE and a AVCHD camera user for awhile now. Can you tell us what your camera records in? Is is 1920 x 1080 i60, something else? Also what is the output you wish to use...SD DVD, Blu-ray DVD, Apple TV or internet.
My experience has been that with AVCHD, and most other formats I suspect, some loss of quality is to be expected during the editing process. Comparing clips from the camera to clips that have been imported to editing software and then exported to some other format is not an apple to apples comparison. ( no pun intended ). How the clips are imported and in particular how they are exported have a huge impact on the final result. The Pro res codec in FCP may offer some higher quality output, but at a much higher price and depending on what you want to view this on......it may not matter. So bottom line, as Ian has responded, in your case switching to FCP may not help.
One final question is how have you tried to export the movie, what was the work flow you used? There might be some settings that you can change to get closer to the results you desire.
