Advantages of iWork over Open Office?

I just began using iWork, which looks spare and elegant, as you'd expect from Apple. I'm not finding all the functionality I now use in LibreOffice, and I'm wondering what the advantages of using iWork are, versus using LibreOffice, or any of the other open office variants?
Is it that iWork harnesses OS X under-the-hood technologies? ..Or that it integrates well with other OS X apps?
If I give up certain functionality from using LibreOffice, what am I gaining by using iWork?
Thank you for any insights about this!

Ray,
I like Numbers a lot.  That said... it is not the right tool for every job.  When you want to analyze large datasets you should use MSExcel, LibreOffice etc.
If you want simple, nice looking information Numbers is for you.  I suggest you use it for a while to feel where the boundaries are.  Post specific questions here.  I use Numbers much more than excel or LibreOffice.

  • IWorks 09 or Office?

just switched to macbook pro. wondering which to get. both seem attracting. i'm a Degree student. (my lecturers might not be using apple computers)

I'm failing to comprehend why TheSmokeMonster is saying that you should get iWork if you want "all the bells and whistles of what office does."  That doesn't make much sense.
iWork will open Office documents, and the latest versions of the iWork apps do a pretty good job with that.  However, iWork is not Office, and as such, will not open Office docs flawlessly in all cases.  If you need to work with a lot of Office documents that use lots of "bells and whistles", you may be better off getting Office.  (Although it should be noted that even Office for Mac won't flawlessly open all docs made by Office for Windows, mostly due to things like fonts that are common on Windows and not present by default on Macs.)
On the other hand, if compatibility with Office is not your top concern, and you like the way Apple software works, you may find iWork more to your liking.  I personally do not like recent versions of MS Word in the slightest, but I find Pages very intuitive and pleasant to use.
And certainly, if you "want to just type words on a page and spell check and whatnot," then you do not need Office, as TheSmokeMonster suggests, and should go for the cheapest option, which is iWork.

  • Iwork vs office vs neoffice/open office question...

I just received my new/first macbook switching over from the pc world... I was wondering I am an office user but should I get office on my macbook or one of the others such as apple's iwork or the free neo/open office?? thanks for any help

I doubt OpenOffice.org X11 requires more resources (processing power, RAM) than NeoOffice, even though it's using X11. However, on an Intel-based Mac with 1 GB of RAM or more, NeoOffice should be relatively fast, and it's much better integrated with OS X (look-and-feel, etc.).
the above 3 mentioned can run/work with the latest windows version of office that is office 2007
iWork and NeoOffice can open/save the latest Office 2007 document formats (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx). OpenOffice.org X11 cannot (but it can open/save previous MS Office formats up to Office 2003).

What do I need to do to open Office 2004 (word AND excel) documents? PowerPC issues etc. They don't open on iWork '08. Happy to upgrade to iWork or Office just to be able to access my docs from Office 2004 again - please can someone advise? Cheers.

Hi - thanks for this info. Actually I have downloaded a 30-day trial of MS Office for Mac 2011 and it reads/writes. But I was expecting that if I saved it again, either as xls oe xlsx, then I would be able to open the newly-saved document in iWorks '08. This is not the case, any ideas why? cheers, Matt.

  • My Iwork and my Office don't open PC Office documents!

Hello everyone! I've got a degree in computer science, but I'm new to mac. I've come from the pc.
I've got a extrange problem in my macbook.I've been surfing to the internet for a solution during 1 hour. Also I've phone apple care suport during 45 minutes and I still don't have the solution. I'm kind of desesperate.
The problem is that Iwork (and also Office for Mac) just don't open my PC Office files (any of them), not xls, doc, ppt... I can open them in the PC, not in the mac.
It just appears an "invalid file" error. The file never opens.
If my Mac it's not going to be able to open MS PC Office documents it's just going to be a nice paperweight, cause my job requieres those files. Got thousands of them, and I recieve daily.
To put all my PC office file to my macbook I used an external USB hard drive. I've read on the internet that sometimes the "doc" document gets corrupted when it's stored in the USB HD. I used it right (removing saftely), so I think that it's not this, but I've got nothing more... even apple support don't know nothing.
I like my notebook, but I've to solve this problem. If it's not solved I'll have to return again to €!$$?? windows and I will have lost a lot of money.
    Thanks everyone.

I've been looking into it and it seems problem is not only with .doc and .xls documents.
For some reason, many files of my folder "documents" (and also all the "sub"folders) are, in a way or other, corrupted.
I've tried 2 times to put all this information from windows (in win files are not corrupted, I've checked it) to my USB external HD and then I put them into my mac. During this process files become corrupted!
And it's so strange, because I've copied more files from my pc to my mac this way and seem they're working right. Anyway now I'm trying with diferent file systems and see what I get.
So it's not problem with pages o office mac, it's problem of the MAC OS X or my external hard drive.

  • Corporate Win7/Office 2010 | Severe Lag when opening Office 2010 files over the network

    Good Evening Everyone,
I work in a corporate environment for one of the top banks in the country (USA). We recently upgraded our computers to Windows 7. (The image has office 2010 included in the build)
I've been experiencing some severe lag when opening Office files over the network. Let me start by saying I've researched a lot and have yet to find a solution that works or even makes much of an improvement.
Notes: My laptop is new (64-bit Win 7 Enterprise). The remote desktop where the files lie is new as well. (64-bit Win 7 Enterprise) Both computers have good hardware and more than enough juice to handle applications.
There are certain files I work on along with other co-workers that we store on a computer within the office. We simply create shortcuts to the files on our local machines and make changes, etc. from there. However, after this upgrade, every time I try to
open a file on the remote computer, it takes over a 1 minute to load. I've spoken to our support team who sent someone out and confirmed it's not the network.
Both computers are on the same subnet as well. I've changed the trust center settings on both the client computers and "server" to trust any computer on the network. I have also changed the network card's speed from "Auto Negotiate" to
full duplex 100mbps with no luck.
I am out of options here and in desperate need for a fix. Even saving changes to a file we work on takes forever. 50% of the time when I close a spreadsheet, the title bar has a not responding message and takes a minute to eventually close.
PS: Extra Info : All computers run McAfee AV and use McAfee for disk encryption. I've confirmed all computers are up-to-date in every respect with the AV software.
    Thanks,

    Try:
    Open My Computer.
Open the Tools menu and choose Folder Options...
    Select the File Types tab.
Select the extension (for example DOC, or XLS) of the file that is slow to open.
In the Details section, click [Advanced], and another dialog box will open.
In the Actions section, click Open then click [Edit...], and another dialog box will open.

does anyone know if pages get an update soon with mail merge? ore do i have to buy open office?

Apple has not made worthwhile changes to Pages v5 for nearly 18 months, so it is unlikely that they will have a surge of conscience over missing features.
If you have an iWork '09 DVD, and the Apple 9.3 updater, use that as it has mail merge and 100+ additional features built-in. Otherwise, you can download LibreOffice, or OpenOffice (order by functionality) Office suites for free. I use LibreOffice myself.

  • Can't open Office after upgrading to a larger HDD.

I recently upgraded my HDD in my Mac to one twice the size. I used the Disk Recovery tool (command + R) to clone my old HDD with all of the software that was installed on it to my new HDD. Now that everything is copied over I tried to open Office for
Mac 2011 and it asks me for the product key.
I am not sure where my original software and product key code is. I have already reformatted the previous HDD and don't have any of the stored information on it.
Is there any way that I can recover or get a different product key that would allow Microsoft Office 2011 to work again for me? I did not know that upgrading to a larger HDD would cause me to lose the Office activation that I already have.
    Thank you for your time.

Right click your document, hover over "Open with..." and then click "Other".
    Find TextEdit and click "Open".
TextEdit will then do it's best to open your document.
If you have iLife, do the same but instead of opening with TextEdit open with Numbers, Pages, Keynote, e.t.c.
    To download iLife, click here.

  • Creating a letterhead that works with Pages, MS OFFICE and Open Office

I have to create a letter head template that can be used by people on PC who have either MS Office (word doc) or OPEN OFFICE (odt) as well as people using Mac iWork PAGES. In my old PC days I could easily make a template with the letter head (some graphics and text boxes) and anyone in the office could use it. Now I am perplexed in how I can get a document with graphics (the logos and some background boxes) so that it appears as a letter head when it is opened in other computers. If I save it to a MS word document, all my graphic boxes (backgrounds) pop up to the top, the text of the company name is moved to the back (behind the graphics) and the logo is resized which means for anyone to use it on a PC they have to readjust all the stuff. Some of these people are not the brightest monitors in the unit so I can't expect them to have to redo all the graphics. And the same problem for the people who have the freebie Open Office, even a worse box of scrambled eggs with our letterhead and logo then.
Any suggestions on what I can do? We have too many people in too many locations to simply print up a box of letterheads for everyone for as few letters they do write, but we need to make sure all our letters are, shall I say, on the same page. Anyway I can create that letterhead on a blank template that won't change no matter who opens it up in what ever?

    Hi There
A possible workaround is that you could use one of the applications to create the letterhead, save that document somewhere. You can then take a screenshot of that letterhead by pressing the command + Shift + 4 keys at the same time and dragging the crosshair around the letterhead. This will save a graphic of the selection on the desktop. You can then just drag this graphic into each application as needed. If you ever need to change the details of the letterhead you will have to take the screenshot again with the edited details and drag the new graphic into your documents.
Not the most elegant solution but a workable one atleast
    Hope this helps

  • How to clear app data in Open Office?

    Hi,
A few days ago Open Office wasn't responding or something and I force quit the app. Now, when I open it again, it comes up with this query window.
No matter what I click, "Don't Restore Windows" or "Restore Windows", that windows won't go away. Thankfully I can move it over and still use Open Office, but it's pretty anoying, and it won't let me quit the either, I have to force quit it.
Is there a way to clear the apps caches/data or something so it doesn't do this?
    Thanks!
    Daniel

A couple of years late, but for other googelers:
Delete the "org.openoffice.script.savedState" folder in ~/Library/Saved Application State
    Should work!

  • How to open Office documents

The iPhone Mail program can open MS Office documents, and also iWork documents. I'm pretty sure I was able to do the same in the fourth beta, using a UIWebView. It might have been really late at night and a lot of tiredness involved though, so I can be wrong.
Any way, is there a way to open Office documents and/or iWork documents, just like Mail do? UIWebView doesn't complain when I give it an office document to load (it does when I try to load e.g. an .rtf or .psd file), but I just get a blank page. Isn't that strange?

Aha, your right, Office documents will only render on the device, not the on the simulator. I wonder why though...

  • Using Oracle "Import PDF" Extension in Open Office Draw to Edit pdf Files

I am a fairly new Mac user with OS X 10.6. For several months, I have been trying to find something which would edit pdf files better than Preview does (for example, the content of a text box in Preview can only be "center aligned"). Skim and FormulatePro were two options I tried that were improvements over Preview in many respects, but wouldn't let me paste an image onto my pdf (such as, for example, if I wanted to put my digital signature on a document).
Then, I "discovered" the Oracle PDF Import Extension which I had installed in Open Office months ago, but hadn't really used. By "discovered," I mean I read on somebody's blog that you could use Open Office Draw to edit pdf files and I thought, "Hey, I wonder if that would work with my setup." (Boy, do I feel stupid.)
I have just started using this functionality, but in just an hour or so of playing around, I have found that it has far exceeded my expectations and, even, my immediate needs. Besides giving you (a) all the control over text and text boxes that you would expect from, say, a word processing program and (b) allowing you to paste images onto your pdf, Open Office Draw also includes layers!
The layer function threw me off for a bit, because, at first, I kept finding that my attempts to edit the document resulted in grabbing the raster image and moving it "off" of the underlying text layer (a function, I will admit, that I think will be worth exploiting someday, but wasn't what I was looking for at the moment). Then, I discovered that you can "lock" the layer so as to prevent this annoying occurrence. To create your edits, simply create a new layer (call it "MyEdits" or whatever you want) and you're in business.
Anybody who has done anything more than drawn a couple of lines and boxes on a page has discovered that editing the overlapping objects can be a real pain - if not an outright impossibility. Separating these overlapping objects through the use of different layers solves the problem.
The only downside to the use of Open Office Draw as a pdf editing tool that I can see is that you must import the pdf, save your edits in odg format, and then export it to pdf when you're done. I know that we would all like to have the capability of doing everything I just described directly to the native document, but, hey, for all the functionality I have been searching the internet for weeks to find, I think it's a reasonable trade off.

    Try turning off protected mode.

  • How do I fix formatting errors in Open Office after downloading Microsoft Office 2011 on my mac?

I have used Open Office for almost 2 years. I recently downloaded Microsoft Office 2011 and now, not only can I not use Open office due to formatting issues, I cannot read any of my documents that were saved in Open Office unless I open them in TextEdit or copy and paste into microsoft word. Does any know of any solutions to this problem?? I tried deleting Microsoft office but that did not fix the issue. This is my first mac... and I love Open Office and prefer it over microsoft...

    Crabtree1234,
    Try this:
    Install LibreOffice (https://www.libreoffice.org/)
    Open your OpenOffice document(s)
Do a "Save As" and choose "Word Document (.docx)"
Then try opening them in Word.  LibreOffice is mostly the same as OpenOffce but LibreOffice has support for saving .docx files.  Here is more about the crazy history of the relationship (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LibreOffice).
This may or may not help with the formatting as any conversion of one document format to another is bound to cause issues.
    Good luck.
