Creating a letterhead that works with Pages, MS OFFICE and Open Office

I have to create a letter head template that can be used by people on PC who have either MS Office (word doc) or OPEN OFFICE (odt) as well as people using Mac iWork PAGES. In my old PC days I could easily make a template with the letter head (some graphics and text boxes) and anyone in the office could use it. Now I am perplexed in how I can get a document with graphics (the logos and some background boxes) so that it appears as a letter head when it is opened in other computers. If I save it to a MS word document, all my graphic boxes (backgrounds) pop up to the top, the text of the company name is moved to the back (behind the graphics) and the logo is resized which means for anyone to use it on a PC they have to readjust all the stuff. Some of these people are not the brightest monitors in the unit so I can't expect them to have to redo all the graphics. And the same problem for the people who have the freebie Open Office, even a worse box of scrambled eggs with our letterhead and logo then.
Any suggestions on what I can do? We have too many people in too many locations to simply print up a box of letterheads for everyone for as few letters they do write, but we need to make sure all our letters are, shall I say, on the same page. Anyway I can create that letterhead on a blank template that won't change no matter who opens it up in what ever?

Hi There
A possible workaround is that you could use one of the applications to create the letterhead, save that document somewhere. You can then take a screenshot of that letterhead by pressing the command + Shift + 4 keys at the same time and dragging the crosshair around the letterhead. This will save a graphic of the selection on the desktop. You can then just drag this graphic into each application as needed. If you ever need to change the details of the letterhead you will have to take the screenshot again with the edited details and drag the new graphic into your documents.
Not the most elegant solution but a workable one atleast
Hope this helps

  • Problems yoga 3 with microsoft office and open office

Have a problem with running microsoft office and open office on the yoga 3. Both programms are unstable and some calculation sheets in Excel don't even open, while they run perfect on my old HP notebook and the Asus Zenbook of my friend. Does anyone has an idea what could be wrong here?

Latest Yoga 3 ships with Win 8.1
Exactly, what error are you getting. Could you get a screenshot?
Are other/normal excel files working fine?
Does your file have macros or just complex formulas?
Could you create a new excel, copy your data into it and try to work with that?

  • Need to upgrade - an iMac that works with PP CC 2014 *and* Pro Tools 11.2?

i'm looking back and forth between the two programs' system requirements and i'm stalled out.
Pro Tools 11.1.2 - 11.2 has these two options for iMac:
    2013 27" iMac (*)
    Model Identifier: 14,2
    Qualified Models:
    Core i7 3.5 GHz
    2013 21.5" iMac (*)
    Model Identifier: 14,1
    Qualified Models:
    Core i5 2.7 GHz
    so i'm thinking of this:
    2013 21.5" iMac,
    16GB RAM
Quad core i5 2.9GHz Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 1GB video memory
1TB ATA (with external 7200RPM FW 800 drives for media)
fusion drives aren't supported by Pro Tools so i'm sticking with the ATA.
will this work with PP CC 2014? i need the upgrade because of a project i'm doing in PP but my normal 9-5 job is in PT so i'll need both to run immediately. thanks!

The better graphics option ie 780M for that Imac with the I7. I would also suggest a TB drive instead of Firewire which is higher latency and lower bandwidth for drives.

  • Case that works with iPad 2 Dock and Smart Cover

The title says it all , if possible list websites and full product details.
    Many Thanks

This case meets all my requirements, however I am not sure that anyone makes one that will work with the dock, except an amoured film shield.

  • Is there a Calendar App that works with both Blackberry phones and Android phones ?

I just recently got a Blackberry Z30 phone.  My husband has an LG Optimus G Android phone.  Does anyone know if there is a Calendar App that will work on both phones so that we can send appointments to each other that will load into our respective calendars?  Right now, we each have to enter the events into our individual phones. I love the Blackberry Calendar (RIM) that came preloaded on my phone since you can customize recurrences, e.g. every 3 weeks plus you can have day, week and month views.  I definitely want a calendar with the customizable recurrences feature, which my husband's Android Calendar App does not have. Thanks.
    Solved!

You Both can Add one email Account on Both Phones and then sync the Calender With Email - This way when one will add a reminder or event it will automatically synced to the other

  • Does anyone know a USB WIFI connection that works with the Intel Powerbook and OS 10.7.5

I have replaced my AIRPORT EXTREME card because it dropped connection and wouldn't turn back on.
It worked fine for 14 months, but now it is broken again.
    I have given up.
I would rather replace a 20-30 dongle everytime rather than the airportexpress card.

that should say a $20-$30 dongle.

  • I have an airport extreem network that works with two MacBooks.  I am trying to get my PC (IBM ThinkPad) to connect to the network.  The PC has airport for the PC downloaded but it will not recognize the network.  Any suggestons please!

I have an airport extreem network that works with my two MacBooks and a iMAC.  I am having no luck in getting a PC (IBM ThinkPad0 that has the PC airport software to be recognized by the network.  Any suggestions?

When you introduced the AirPort Extreme, you had a condition where you have two routers in series. The simpliest solution is to reconfigure the downstream router (in this case the Extreme) as a bridge. This will allow the upstream router to provide the required NAT & DHCP services to all network clients regardless of which router they are connected to.
To reconfigure the Extreme as a bridge, you will use the AirPort Utility. (Note: I will provide the steps for using AirPort Utility v5.x)
AirPort Utility > Select the AirPort > Manual Setup
Internet > Internet Connection tab > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)

  • Car charger that works with the bumper case?

Does anyone know which, if any, brands of car chargers and models that work with the new bumper case? I went to best buy yesterday and they all looked too thick to even buy it and give it a try.

I'm pretty sure the lack of functionality with car chargers and the bumper case is simply because the cutouts for the USB connector on the bumper is too small..that's the only reason. Otherwise it will work; it's simply a physical problem with the connector not seating properly; that's it.
I'm saying this based on my own situation. I have a Griffin car charger /FM receiver that worked with my iPhone 3G and it worked with my iPhone 4 until I put the bumper case on.
The situation is the same situation as to why the Apple supplied USB cable that shipped with the 3G does not work with the iPhone 4 w/bumper. Apple redesigned the size of the USB connector and sized the cutout on the bumper for their new smaller size making the bumper not backwards compatible with existing devices with the older size USB connectors. The size differential is not that big but it's big enough to cause problems.

  • Working with Pages and Word-questions!

NOTE: Sorry for the similarity of this to my post a few minutes ago titled "Which do I use, Pages or Word)? I learned some things through experimentation and have created subtler and more challenging questions for you.
Help me out here (please). I am now working with Pages, sharing documents with dozens of behind the times colleagues who are using some old program called "Word." It's my job to work with these people and I'm trying to make it as easy for everyone as possible.
Do I have this right? When I create a document (or open an old Word document into pages), in order to be able to share it with people, I save it, and check the box to save a copy in Word format. Then when I send my documents, it works like a charm. Yes?
If I start by opening a Word document, and every time I save I check "save copy to Word," I end up with only one document, no version in Pages. If I start with a Pages document, or save without checking the box, I end up with two separate versions of the document (like when I create a pdf)? It appears that if I I want to keep working in the Word format, every time I save it will give me a dialog box and make me check the box (and possibly select my location). This is cumbersome since I am now in the habit of saving often (you learn that when you work with Word for the Mac for any period of time--bomb, bomb, bomb). So, an I correct in assuming that if I want to save regularly, I really have to work in Pages, and then be scrupulous about saving into Word when I'm done for the day, or just before I send? It's sort of a pain in the butt, although I can learn to do it--I just want to make sure I'm not missing something here. Also, is there an autosave function so I don't have to rely on my discipline? Or does it never ever bomb?
What happens if I open the Word version and make changes to it? Do I have to do something differently to make sure I have both versions identical? Am I better off always to open the Pages document to work on, then save and send?
Do I always then have two versions of the same document (like I would if I did this same thing with pdf)?
How do I make sure that the Word version is always up to date since that is the one I am sending to colleagues? Do I always have to save and check the box, and then select the correct document to send?
I do see that when sending a single document I can easily send it while I am in the document itself. When I do this, selecting to send it as a Word document (or a pdf for that matter), will it send the version I most recently saved, or the version that is on my screen (if I forgot to save changes)?
FInally, I'd be open to any tips from people working regularly with others who must use Word. I want it to work as simply as possible, but want to set up some good habits from the beginning.
Finally, finally, have you had problems with compatibility. I have to say that there have been very few Word document yet that I've opened that I haven't gotten a message that says that Pages doesn't support some aspect of the document and formatting is removed, or spacing is different, etc. The most common is that "paragraph borders operate differently so all borders except outside borders have been removed." I'm a bit nervous about this--will I be getting documents from others that I can't trust? Will I have to ask them to send a pdf as well so I can confirm that I got it right? Can anyone ease my mind? Or am I living in reality?
    Thanks a million!

Well yes they are not the same program so there will be differences.
For example Pages only allows a border all the way around a paragraph with few options on the style of line, which is why you got the warning.
A workflow would consist of you doing your work in Pages however you like it and when you have finished and saved, making a Word copy which you despatch to your colleagues and then throw away.
Of course this is more cumbersome than sticking with MsWord which is another option. You choose. It comes down to whether or not you have to tightly conform and interact with Word users. Maybe Pages is not for you, or even NeoOfffice which is a clone of MsOffice.
Test it. If it works and you like it stick with whatever solution works for you.

  • I started to learn HTML, and I'm using text edit and everything is going fine, when I save the file with a .html extension and open it with safari I only view the code and not the webpage that was supposed to be created.

I started to learn HTML, and I'm using text edit and everything is going fine, when I save the file with a .html extension and open it with safari I only view the code and not the webpage that was supposed to be created.

That is because you don't have a web server configured and running to serve the html page. In order to see the page in a browser you need to access it using a url similar to http://localhost/~yourUserName if you are serving the page from your user account.
Prior to Mountain Lion you could go into web sharing and turn on the web server. With Mountain Lion there is no option, other than using terminal, to turn on the web server. The web sharing menu item has been removed in Mountain Lion. Apache is still on your computer but it will take a little searching these forums or the Internet to find how to turn it on.
If you want a graphic user interface to turn on/off the Apache server you could download and install a server application like xampp, http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html. I use this and it works well.

Recently upgraded to Mavericks... was working with Pages documents created with previous OS ... Pages is now frozen and I don't dare force quit and loose my old documents.  How can I "thaw".... unfreeze Pages?  Have several pages windows open that I was working on.

I also had this problem after I installed Mavericks: Pages files freezing at close, need to force quit.
Workaround: when saving any document created with an earlier version of Pages, be sure to untick the "include preview in document".
For some reason, this resolves the problem.
BTW "loose" is not a verb. You probably mean "lose".

  • A UPS model that works with Mac Native software to do a graceful shutdown and automatic restart during a power failure.

I've tried 3 UPS's (2 APC and one TripLite) that state they are OSX compatible, however, they do not fully respond to the native osx setting in (system Preferences/ Energy Saver/ UPS/Start up automatically after a power failure). This is what happens:
During a power outage, the OS does a graceful shutdown, but does not reboot when power is restored.
Apparently, the UPS is not notified to turn off during the shut down process. The power (on-Off-On) cycle is required by the mac to restart.
Trip lite tech support says they have software that works with Windows and linux to do this, but not mac.
I've tried two older APC UPS's, One Smart UPS1500 and a Back-UPS 1500 with the same result on two different servers and one iMac.
At this point I'm looking for a make and model of a UPS that does work. If anyone can verify a make and model that actually does this, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Its a simple test, just pull the plug on your UPS, wait for the system to shut down, and then plug the UPS back in. The system should reboot.

Many of the CyberPower UPS units are compatible. Checkout the home solutions on this page: http://www.cyberpowersystems.com/products/ups-systems.html

  • Create a template that works for paperback and epub...

    Hello Framemakers,
I am in the process of switching from Word to FrameMaker 12.0. I need to typeset a book and all the research I have done suggests FrameMaker is more stable and less, shall we say finicky that Word is.
I have begun creating a book template. Things are moving well but a few things are still confusing me: Please answer whatever you can. Your feedback is truly appreciated!
    1. Word as a notion of a 'gutter' which is an extra space resulting in uneven margins. Framemaker does not seem to have this concept, so I have
         1. Set the left margin of the left page to 0.6" and
         2. The left margin of the right page to 0.9"
Is this the right way to do this in FrameMaker?
Additionally, the first page of a chapter is more complex. It has
         1. A title with a different font and size
         2. An image
         3. One or two quotations
         4. The top left corner of the body is set to 4.0" instead of 0.76" for the remaining pages.
    3. Now a chapter can start on the left or right page. Per question 1 above, these pages have different margins. I am thinking I shoud create a left title page and a right title page and apply these manually whenever a title page falls on the left or right side. Again, is this the right way to do this in FrameMaker?
    4.  Do I create Separate frames for each of the title, the image, the two quotes or do I apply paragraph styling within the body? Word gave me real grief whenever I would export to pdf because it would (a) move the last line of one page to the next wrecking my layout or worse move the image to the next page! I want to make sure that the pdf output matches the layout.
    5. I want the text to flow around the image on the title page. Do I (a) create a graphics frame for the image and a text frame for the text into the master page, and overlay the image frame on top of the text frame? Or do I insert the image into the text frame directly? Which way is best? Note that each chapter has a different image.
    6. Lastly, and most confusedly is the fact that I need to publish to epub, kindle, and paperback. Do I (a) create three different templates for each? Or do I create one template with conditional formatting? Perhaps there is a completely different way to solve this problem?
Your thoughts and suggestions are eagerly thought and gladly accepted!
    Thanks!

    First, of course, congratulations! and welcome to a more stable world ;-}
    Assorted suggestions …
different margins for right and left pages sounds like the right approach to creating a gutter for a facing-pages layout
firstRight and firstLeft would be possible (plus judicious use of the Double-sided/First page side property)
to place a graphic and other elements on a title-page, I'd stick with paragraph styling; don't forget that you can create a separate style for the anchor of any graphic
This simple suggestion may not be compatible with your runaround requirements, though; that's something I've never needed to handle.
for multiple layouts, I'd go for multiple template documents with different page layout definitions and different definitions (f'r instance, larger font, different colour, no numbering …) for each style
Other forum contributors will be a lot more up-to-date than I am on new-fangled formats such as ePub, so keep an eye open for updates, completions and corrections.
    Have fun!
