Advice needed about Bluetooth

HI to everyone. I had a very weird situation a few weeks ago when I discovered that the Bluetooth had been activated. I don't use it and don't know much about its Function apart from it's a security issue and it links with other devices in the area. I'm very concerned that something could have been added to the pad but don't know where to start looking? Any help is much appreciated!

You do not have, IMHO, anything at all to worry about. Bluetooth is used to connect certain devices (mouse, keyboard' for example). The range is about 30 feet (10 meters). It cannot be used to penetrate a network, for example. If a Bluetooth device was, somehow, able to connect to your system, it would not have passwords, etc. to be able to do anything. Bluetooth is not, again IMHO, any kind of security issue.
if you do not use it, turn it off.

Please can I have some advice about lens correction plugin's for Aperture 2.1?
I see that the Apple Aperture Downloads site promotes two:
1)LensFix 4.3
An external editor. The Aperture Downloads site calls it Lens Fix 4.3 but when you go the developers site (Kekus Digital) it only shows LensFix CI is this the same thing? Am I supposed to download the PTLens database from epaperpress.com and install manually before it is any good?
OR
2)Edit FixLens 1.6
Their site looks very poorly designed and the link from the Apple page does not go to the Aperture plugin, you have to drill down until you find it! Does it use the exif data about your lens and the zoom setting it was on automatically or do you need to configure it each time?
Which one did you buy? Was it worth it?

LensFix CI is the same thing. It has the standalone version, the PS plug-in and the Aperture plug-in.
I've used LensFix via PS for a long time. It's great but... it can be a bit buggy if the image in use is 16-bit. Often it will work on the first image or two and then crash on the next.
I am told it's not compatible with PS CS4.
Another option is PTLens. It's also a PS plug-in and an Aperture plug-in. It's supposed to be CS4 compatible.

It uses the same database of lens corrections as LensFix.
FWIW, I've tended to do this kind of work in Photoshop, either round tripping an image in Aperture or exporting an image from Aperture. Since Aperture plug-ins are going to 16-bit Tiff files anyway and since most images (if they are final files for clients) need some more PS work, I just go that route.

Advice needed about slow broadband speed

Hi there,
I was wondering if you could help me. I live in the countryside and wouldn't you guess it, I get slow internet speeds. Obviously I don't expect superfast broadband but I just want to see if there is any other reason to my slow speeds other then my distance from the exchange (which I believe is 4.3Km, a long distance I know).
I am posting my router statistics (BT HomeHub 3) and the BT Wholesale Performance test report. Essentially I am curious whether old wiring or noise on the line is playing an issue. I'm certainly no expert but my home is quite old and I'm not sure when the wiring was installed so I'd really appreciate any advice. I've also just emailed BT Customer support about resetting the IP Profile as it has been extremely slow ever since the outages due to last weeks weather playing havoc. Any advice appreciated.

There is the further diagnostic test below. The strange thing is I was getting around 3-3.5mbps downstream a week ago but with the frequent disconnections due to the weather I have a bad feeling the exchange has downgraded my line.

Hi, hope someone can help...
I'm not a real web designer but over the last few years I've taught myself how to make web pages & do some coding so that I can make basic sites & galleries for me & my girls...
Well I've just realized what a huge collection of movies we've got now, and I've started putting them on to web pages - they are WMV...
But half the time they don't work, especially on a MAC ect...
Then i came across this blog at Lady Sonia dot net and all her movie clips work perfectly, all on the same page, and when i right-clicked them they say
'about adobe flash player 10'
So my question is would anyone be kind enuff to tell me how I can change all our wmv movie clips into whatever they need to be so they work like that???
or maybe someone does that kind of job and i could pay sum1 to do them for me???!!! lol
I doubt anyone wants to do that lol so in that case would anyone point me to the help page I need to read for this exact issue, because I have tried F1 as many people on here say and it took me to firefox and was no help at all, i've been searching flash help sites all night and i have no idea what i'm reading its soooo confusing, so if anyone knows a place they can point me to that would be really great!

Ok the code is pasted below, but what i actually did was in dreamweaver
> insert media > insert flash > inserted the flash clip
but that didnt work, so i tried
insert media > insert plugin > insert the FLV movie clip
but it says
'unable to find the plugin that handles this type of media'
altho i now have 2 clips playing automatically!!!

Advice needed about potential AEBS

i have a small (at the moment) home network.
ADSL router, mini, xp machine.
common situtaion , I have a newly formed and growing familiy who are soon going to want access for thier PS3/XBOX360 (insert any other electro toy).. to the web and my mp3/photo/movie repository.
Currently the mini is connected to the plasma tv in the lounge and serves all files (just to the xp machine and itself).
My 3 FW disks are starting to clutter up the back of the tv area!... the plan is to maybe buy a AEBS, Cat5 the entire house and create a media library in the loft.
i.e. AEBS with hub and disks connected ... cat5 to a hub somewhere............
This will give me wireless (for the garage) and file sharing to everyone on the network.
BUT
is a single usb link to my ethernet via the AEBS going to have enough bandwidth to share out my media repository to say 5 clients (mp3s, photos and say SD video).
I suppose I have the option of NAS expansion on the AEBS if I want to.....
just looking for anybody whoes done/doing this???

Yes. The data served over the network is in no way related to how the disk is formatted. Only the file server directly connected to the disk (in this case the AEBS) needs to understand the disk format.

Advice needed about JFrame and JDialog (moved from java programming)

My main class in my application is a page where the user can choose to register or login. This class is a JFrame. If the user chooses to register, my register dialog is called up and the parent JFrame passed to the dialog:

}Same happens for login. If the user chooses to login, my login dialog comes up and my main class JFrame is set as its parent. This is all fine because all the calling up is done in my main class, so i can just use 'this' to pass the JFrame.
Now here is my problem. If the user successfully logs in, they should have access to control some events. Now i am not sure if it will be ok to make this new events class another JFrame, as it is practically the start of a new section in my application.
Thats my first question. My second question is if i do make this events class a JDialog, is it bad coding not to give it a parent frame? Or would this be acceptable? My worries is passing the main class JFrame to a class which is only accessable by going through two other classes.

Advice: Use JIternalFrame, for your purpose.
And if u want to go with JDialog than u can do that in main method. Like when u call JDialog

ADVICE NEEDED about moving from OSX3.9 to TIGER 4.

My position is:
1. Ive got OSX 3.9 on my emac. Ive got alot of apps installed.
2. Ive got my HOME folder, APPLICATION folder & ADDRESS BOOK backed up
on an external HD.
3. I've got a cloned bootable (skeletal) copy of my internal HD backed up to
an external HD.
My Concerns are:
1. If i install tiger 10.4 from a disc, am i going to have problems syncing my
backed up folders to the new operating system ? Will all my backed up
apps & home folder be placed in the Tiger without any problems ?
2. Is this ( all the above details) the best set up for me to move from 10.3.9
to 10.4 ?
3. I'm concerned about how many of my apps which work okay on 10.3.9
are going to NOT work on TIGER 10.4 . Is there any info about this
discepency between apps & app versions which no longer run on 10.4 ?
My worst case scenario is that if i switch, i risk having to replace alot of
the apps i've come to rely on.

Hi didier,
first make sure you buy the retail full install DVD! Then follow this procedure: 10.4 Tiger Upgrade: Decision tree+Checklist .
If you follow that step-by-step there should not be any problems and you won't loose anything. The simple upgrade option does not move any application or document. Everything stays were it was.
There are only very few and very specialised applications that do not work with 10.4. All standard apps work flawlessly.

Newbie about bluetooth with notebooks

Just need a few questions answered about bluetooth that I didnt quite understand.
Say that Im buying the PowerPC G4 ibook, it says that it has bluetooth 2.0 built in.
Heres the questions.
1)Does that mean that I dont have to buy an adapter for bluetooth? or does it mean that the program itself is already installed and i just need to buy the adapter?
2)Is bluetooth a service that I need to sign up for and pay monthly? If so how much is it per month?
3)Is bluetooth only compatible with other bluetooth users? Does that mean that there must be another bluetooth user in the area in order for me to connect to the internet?
4) Sorry ive never used a laptop or wireless conection. Say that I'm at college and they have a wireless connection at certian buildings, will I be able to connect to the internet using bluetooth?

1. You don't need to buy a bluetooth dongle. The hardware is built into the iBook
2. Bluetooth is not a service, you do not need to pay a subscription to use it. It is a wireless 'protocol' that allows different devices (Headsets, phones, printers for example) to connect wirelessly. See for full description - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluetooth
3. I am not sure what you mean by this question. You can use bluetooth to connect to different devices. It may well be possbile to wireless connect two iBooks using bluetooth... although I'm not sure why you'd do that, if you've got a 'wireless' (WIFI) on the iBook.
4. Bluetooth and Wifi are both wireless technologies. Wifi is what you would use to connect your laptop to the internet, at college or at a hotspot in Starbucks for example. Bluetooth is used to connect to devices, such as a mobile phone. For example I connect my mobile phone to my iBook and synchronise my address book and calendar between the two.

After starting, Mail answers are very very slow. The same for Note. Instead of, sending mails is only a bit slower than before upgrading.
In Safari, I choose Goggle as starting page in Preferences, but at every restart misses that starting page and the search strip says "Seek Google or instert an address".

I have one of the original IPOD's and just tried adding a bunch of songs, (200) and now that they're on my computer my ipod won't sync as it now says i need about 8.45 more gb. any thoughts on this?

I have one of the oriignal IPOD's circo 2006. I've got about 150 tunes on it which has been fine but today tried to add another 200 or so and was advised I need about 848 MB to load them. Is there any solution. I have 2 playlists. One with the original 150 tunes and one with the addiitional 200 tunes. Thoughts as now my IPOD won't sync at all and I don't want to delete any of the songs if I don't have to.

How much storage on the IPOD - I have one that has 60GB on it. Also have an IPOD shuffle that held less songs.
As your IPOD does not have enough storage for all of your songs, you have to create a list to sync to it that does not exceed the storage size.
For instance my IPOD shuffle had its only list of songs that did not exceed storage.
The IPOD gets them all because I only loaded the songs from my CDs that I really liked into ITUNES - leaving out the ones I skipped over.

Advice needed on buying iphone as gift

I went to apple store, they do not want to sell iphone to me unless I sign AT&T 2 years plan. I thought AT&T has locked the phone and users must subscribe in order to use it. Why Apple store still not allow me to buy?
Please advice, if I want to buy online iphone for my brother, do I or my brother have obligation to sign out AT&T plan?
One more advice needed, I found the shipment takes weeks, do I have option to arrange for self-collection?

Well that's not entirely true.
Apple Stores have been instructed not to sell you an iPhone if any of the following is true:
You state that you will not be signing up with AT&T.
You do not have an ID from a US state, also indicating you will not be activating with AT&T
You do not have a credit card
For example, I've seen US Apple Store managers refuse to sell iPhones to European residents because of the AT&T lock-in.

Video intensive work on Mac Pro? Advice Needed

I've been originally saving up for a while now for an iMac 24" as it offers the best specification price wise. But now I leaning on the Mac Pro and therefore need some advice.
I know that there are alot of posts on advice - need to buy mac etc. so therfore I would really appreciate if I am afforded some help.
I am mostly going to do ALOT of video encoding (via handbrake) and I am looking for the best configuration available to achieve lowest waiting time.

I think you should go back and look at the other threads with advice, your budget. There is "ideal" and "affordable."
Will it pay for itself in 24 months so you can afford the next revision at that time?
Start with an 8-Core 3GHz.
Add a Port Multiplier controller and two drive cases, 5 drives each, nearly 400MB/sec RAID.
Throw in 8GB RAM.
Add in costs for software upgrades, two sets of backups, four internal 500GB drives.
Seagate has 750GB, as does WD. Hitachi has their $450 1000GB monster.
Give yourself time to build, test, and optimize your setup, and expect to change it over time as you learn more.
Can't afford that? then trim the 8-core. But Apple has shown how efficient next generation applications already are for video when it comes to 3GHz 8-core Mac Pro.

Had to have a rebuild of my laptop....have now lost all my music from my itunes, but I can't transfer back on from my ipod. Also had to register my laptop (same) as another computers, so now no music showing as purchased, though I have. Also have hours of uploaded music from my own purchased, legitimate CDs, but won't transfer from ipod...it says it will erase. So very frustrated....thanks mr technician! I believe that if you do a clean reinstall from your HD's recovery sector (D) or Recovery disks, the hard drive sector C is wiped clean. Everything goes, apps, data, address books, music, pix, viruses
