Advice / opinions on new Flash project I am starting

Hello, I am an occasional Flash user but a full time website
designer. I have a new project that requires me to learn a bit more
about using Flash. I am looking for advice on which way to proceed
with this since I am sure there are different avenues I could take.
The best way to describe what I want is to show you.
Basically my end product would look and feel much like what you see
at the top left of this website (
http://www.baltimoreravens.com/)
where large photos scroll and give headlines to news and or events
information. I like the way this works and the way the photos
continue to roll yet you can select any of the other headlines if
youlike. I am very impressed that there doesnt seem to be much
download time (very important of course)
Secondly, the following website (www.slate.com) gives what
seems like a simpler option to my above request and also enlists
another feature that I would like to incorporate below the main
photograph which allows you to flip through a reel of thumnails to
find a story or interest to click on.
So here I am with Flash MX and wondering what is the best way
to do something very similar to this. I am an .ASP developer using
SQL Server DB. Another big thing here is I would like to build an
admin where the client could update the photos, text, URL's,
display order, for bothof the above projects.
I know this is very broad, just looking for general
directions.
Thanks so much for your time in advance.

slate is nice, but uses no Flash to get the effect - all
JavaScript.
The Ravens site is all Flash, and fairly easy to build.
Essentially, you want to build a MovieClip that holds empty
MovieClip containers - which you will load the images into. (You
can use the Loader component, but I wouldn't if you are worried
about file-size)
Then, you build the navigation, and a timer, to scroll that
main MovieClip across the stage (move its x position)
It becomes a bit more complicated than that, but that is the
gist of it.
As for updateability - typically this type of thing is XML
driven. You will want to build an XML that holds the image paths,
text, and all else, to power this. || BUT - you are a database
user, so you might find it simpler to build a database solution to
hold the images and text, and use an automatic XML generator to
pull the information out for Flash. Of course, you don't need to
use XML, but it is likely the easiest and fastest method.
Give it a shot, see what you come up with, and come back with
questions/problems.

  • Why is Import Video greyed out for a new Flash project?

I have been trying unsuccessfully to load any MP4 (H.264 encoding), FLV, or F4V files into a brand new project. I've tried importing FLV and F4V files via the Import to Library and Import to Stage menu choices but all result in "One or more files were not imported because there were problems reading them" error message. I just downloaded Flash CC today (Feb 23, 2014) and cannot even get started on my project since I cannot seem to load a video into the library or stage. I've looked at the tutorials, but they assume that I can choose the greyed out Import Video... menu choice. Searching the discussion didn't help me as most of the discussions are off-topic or from 2 or more years back.
    Thanks,
    Xtraspatial

Thank you sinious. I had QT 7.5.5 installed. The problem was unrelated. Like a bufoon, I created a new HTML5 canvas, which is unable to import videos. When I switched to a AS3 canvas all was as it should be. And there was rejoicing throughout the land! Case closed.

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you had Errors TF30162 and TF250025 when creating a New Team Project in TFS2012 with Sharepoint Site on Visual Studio.
The Errors TF30162 seemed that the reports for TFS could not be uploaded due a permission problem. The fix was really easy.
Go to your team foundation server
    Open the administration console.
    Click on Reporting
    Click on Edit
    Click on Reports Tab
Enter the credential for the Reports
    Save
    Click on Start Jobs
In addtion, the problem may be due to the caching done by Team Explorer in Visual Studio. Exiting the copy of VS on the client and reloading it will fix the problem as the updated team process settings will cached locally.
To resolve the Errors TF250025, you will need to register a new internal URL for the SharePoint site using Alternate Access Mappings.

  • Best practices in structuring a large Flash project?

I'm building an educational site in Flash. A student works through a series of activities, either watching an animated video or answering a question. You can get a good idea of the basic functionality with this mockup: http://imgur.com/Mi4JyHN.
After a student logs in, the server responds with their current activity and progress. The activity displays, and all student interaction is sent to the server to record (time spent on questions, buttons clicked, correct and incorrect answers, etc). When the student is done with an activity, the server is notified and responds with the next activity to present.
I'm fairly new to flash and would love to hear how people with experience would structure this project. I can think of the following possibilities.
One enormous SWF. All audio files and movie clips are embedded in the SWF and swapped out as necessary. This is not a reasonable option because the size of the resulting SWF would be huge.
Exactly one SWF for each activity. The control buttons and progress bars are obviously shared between each activity, and it seems like a lot of duplication to have them in each compiled SWF. Also, if a button is changed, this requires re-compiling everything, right?
One main SWF that loads others. The main SWF contains the buttons and progress bars and fetches external SWFs from the server to replace the stage area. I don’t know enough Flash to predict how this will go.
Part JavaScript, part Flash. The buttons and progress bars are done in HTML + JavaScript. The page fetches external SWFs from the server to replace the stage area. This is the current system, and the problem is the ugliness/difficulty of managing the communication between JS and AS3.
HTML5. While I would love for this to be a possibility, I don’t feel like it is. Animation is still way easier in Flash and we are still targeting some fairly old browsers. The best part about Flash is the consistency in experience.
    Extra questions:
Which options leave us open to publishing to mobile using Adobe AIR?
Which options are best for automated testing / accessibility / version control / general code layout?
Thanks so much for any advice!

For a Flash-based design I would go with option 3.  The general controls and objects common for use with each activity would be in the main file.  Whether or not the main file would be responsible for sending activity data to the server could depend on there being determinable similarities between data collections...  otherwise it might fall on individual activity swfs to interact with the database.  There are too many unknowns in this regard for me to offer much.
If this was going to be a loaded application, such as an AIR app, then option 1 might be more reasonable since you only have to install once for everything to be available.
When it comes to mobile you are likely to hit a snag if you rely on using AIR/Flash to try to deal with a main and activity swfs approach... mainly in the Apple realm...  unless I forgot a lot of what I was involved with some time ago, a loaded swf cannot contain any code when it comes to iStuff.  So you end up having to make the main file contain all of the coding to deal with each activity's processing.  Every interface/interactive element can only exist by name and the main file has to target them and assign listeners and processing and etc....a mess in my view.  That's why having the one huge AIR file is possibly a tad more reasonable.
I have nothing to offer in the HTML5 end of things.  I have not yet journeyed down that path.  Since HTML5 is basically wingless without javascript and CSS, it might come to pass that the current system (option 4) is the way to go.

After some advice, I am new to Apple and looking to purchase either the MacBook Air 13inch with 256GB and 8GB mem or the MacBook Pro 13inch with retina 256Gb and 8GB mem. I am an assistant principal in a primary school and also studying my masters at university. I don't play computer games and I don't watch movies. I do store photos and videos of my kids and music on iTunes. I also like browsing the net with numerous windows open, check email etc. I am really wanting long battery life as I do a lot of my work on the couch - not close to a PowerPoint. Would the air do the trick or will it soon be outdated as Apple move towards retina display? Both air and pro seem very thin  - almost the same? And not much difference in weight either so both very portable which is also a necessary requirement. Just can't help dreaming about that 12 hour claimed battery life. Any helpful advice/opinions, very much appreciated. Thanks

It's not likely that you'll get 12 hours in reql life. Those benchmarks are set under very strict controlled conditions. Kind of like mileage per gallon claims on cars. If 16GB of ram is an option at all I'd highly recommend you get that. As far as storage 256GB isn't alot, consider storing some things on an external thunderbolt real

  • Found 2 bugs in new Flash Builder 4.7

    Hello.
I've just migrated all of my large projects to the new Flash Builder 4.7 (from 4.6) and they all work well except for the 2 annoying issues:
    1. I don't know why, but FB no longer allows me to create "config" packages. It says "config is a reserved word in ActionScript and cannot be used." Wtf? I had lots of projects using such names in FB 4.6 and didn't have any issues with it. Is it a new rule in FB 4.7? If so - then why it was introduced and was introduced only now? ActionScript language and FB exist not the first year... Also after i migrated existent projects i see all "config" packages have non-standard "folder" icon in the source file tree (in the package explorer panel).
    2. There are strange warnings started to appear - "the import BLA-BLA-BLA is not used locally", but I am not blind - I see it is used just a little bit below in the code. What is wrong with this?
Please help as I am confused now about what to do... I waited for FB 4.7 for so long and now I think I will need to downgrade...

    Hi Infeter,
    For 1;
After the number of hours I have lost debugging issues where someone has inadvertently named a variable the same as a package that is on the root, so making it impossible for FB to discern whether I am talking about "aname.veryImportant" as the sub-package "veryImportant" of the package "aname" or the property "veryImportant" of the variable "aname", I welcome any and all new warnings of how a coder may inadvertently break Flash! So, if they are saying it is a reserved word, it is probably because there is a core class, variable or other such that will, at some point, bite you if you name something after it. This has always been the case with, for example "default" - default is a keyword that has real meaning for the compiler and you will not be allowed to define things as "default" because of the potential for confusion (are you issuing the "default" directive in a switch statement or are you referring to the "default" value in your class?). Given that FB has the frankly excellent "Refactor" function to allow you to easily rename packages, members and classes, I'd just be happy to rename the offending items and be glad to have saved myself several hours of painful debug later on.
    For 2;
I'm surprised you're seeing this warning for classes that are not used. I've found loads that were added in automatically over the years that simply are not used. I'm loving the way I can clean out about half my import statements now. The thing to do is to comment out the imports and check that everything still works. If it does, then you're laughing, you don't need them. If it triggers errors of not being able to locate the class, then I would put together a code snippet and add it as a comment to your bug report.

  • Extracting resourse like .ai & png files from a flash project

Hi! I have been assined the task of extracting the images from old flash projects and am having a devil of a time doing so.
There are lots of programs that you can extract info out of the swf files, but these don't give you the original .ai Ilustrator files that may have been used to create the presentation with, or png files with transparent backgrounds.
Is there a plug-in in Flash that allows you to capture these items in the document?  when I drag the item from the library (lets say a .ai file) to the stage and right click and copy it, it only gives me part of the item when I paste it back into illustrator... and when I drag the PNG resource to photoshop I get it with a background I do not want.
any help on this would be great!!!!
I have both cs3 and cs4 so a solution in either one would be great!

Well that is kinda what I've been doing, only its not quite that simple as doing it that way makes an image of what is on the entire stage.  What I have to do is create a new project copy over all my library items to the new project, and pull over each one individually and do it that way.... if you have a lot of items in your library (which I do a lot of times since these contain a lot of animation sequenced into individual frames) this process can be quite tedious.  Yes you can save out to .ai illustrator files this way as well.
I was hoping for something a little more... automatic or at least where I don't have to drop each item individually on a stage, reposition, ect...
But yes, the previous post is one way of doing it with some fooling around with.

  • Help! understand cs4 flash "Project"

Ok, In cs3 flash project was nice it did what i needed but
now it seems to take more time. the reason may be I'm not using it
for the reason usually used so new operations and features where
not geared to my usage. sorry for any spelling problems or
    miss-usage of words.
How I use project. I use it to batch publish 10-100 files
while i go get a coffee.
so why am i writing this.
the cs4 version dose some things that i hope someone knows a
    way around.
    1. so i have my project file and all my flash files open(open
in project not open as a document) and now i have to check off each
10-100 files i want to publish. waist of time. i understand why its
done but anyone know a check all function?
    2. in cs3 fash would hide the publishing visualy from me and
just output the file name to an output window when completed. in
cs4 it opens the file publishes and closes it then moves to the
next one. why? i don't need to see this and i feel its slowing the
    process. is it?
    3. ok side note cause i just dont know if its possible but is
there a way to override the publish settings for all the files to
follow one set way. example say i have 3 flies in the publish
settings file A says publish a jpeg and a swf, file B says publish
a mov and file C says publish a gif to a different location say my
desktop not the folder its in like the others. ok, now is there a
way to make them say publish as just a swf(or whatever) to say a
new empty folder named say new folder on the desktop. basically
    overriding the publish settings.
ok thanks for any help and making my day shorter. if you know
of anything that might be easer please post

  • News "FLASH"... Nancy O (the legend) ... i need help again

I am trying to put a banner on my website for my exam.... It will have to have an image with logos flashing across and stopping for a few seconds before carrying on.and out the other side.  I have looked up everywhere to see how this is done but with no joy. There is lots of info out there but it is not working for me.  In Flash i have no problem creating a banner image with various logos moving  from one side to the other or even changing the image from one shape to another or bouncing it up and down the stage from one side to the other. I can even stagger the timelines for the logos to make them enter one after the other. The one thing i can not get to grips with is making the images stop or pause after they have entered from one side before exiting  the other side. I have followed step by step many  youtube tutorials but the authors are wizzing through them too fast and despite folling every step second by second, i  am missing a vital step somewhere.   Would someone please let me know step by  step (and please assume i am an idiot when doing this) the sequence i must follow from the very begining to the last step when i publish.

Noooooooo........ When i saw your email notification i had high hopes of getting the answer i have been trying to work out for two days....but no problem ..your still a legend ha ha ... you got me out of a big hole in this project the last time... but thanks for taking the time to reply, i will try the other forum.

  • Flash Project files (FLP)

Hello. I can't seem to figure something out and was wondering
if someone could explain this to me. I use a Flash Project (flp)
for version control of my flash projects. One curious/strange thing
seems to happen when I check in my files using the flp.
When I check in a file the "date modified" on my local copy
changes to be 5 hrs ahead of when it was actually modified. Only
happens when I check a file in using the flp. I have checked all
the times for both my local computer and the server where I place
the checked in file and they are in sync. Don't know what else
    could be causing this.
Has this happened to anyone else and is there a solution?
    Thanks in advance!

    StanWelks,
    > Each time I make a new project, Flash is creating a .flp
    file
    > What are these files for?
I think it stands for "Flash Project," but not sure. The FLP
    is just a
small file that stores the locations of the various other
    files that belong
to the project. Think of it as an M3U playlist.

  • Non-Technical Person Having Horrible Difficulty Trying To Download New Flash Player

I no very little about computer support and have little knowledge of attempting to navigate around the computer trying to correct errors.
I switched from IE 9 to Fire Fox, and now I cannot use videos, because I keep getting alert that I need to upgrade to new Adobe Flash Player.   I have tried doing this all day.  I get to the download, and confirm to download the new Flash Player upgrade.  A prompt comes up to SAVE the file which I do.  Sometimes it says Fire Fox not responding, and other times it seems to work.  Then I get a prompt to RUN the new program via the download.  It does not download.  When I hit RUN again, it says that two consecutive downloads are now occurring.  It is not running and completing the upgrade.
I searched trobuleshooting tips and it said to uninstall any prior Flash Player programs.  I believe I did that.
The whole process of downloading starts over and still nothing.
At one point, something to download.  I think it is when I tried to download from the Adobe site.  Then it said that the Plug-In could not be found Fire Fox.
I am getting out of my league as to what to do next and how to fix this issue.
Thanks for nay help or advice.  Oh, and if you do have advice or direction, please try and communicate it in steps, because as stated previously, I am almost totally clueless on how to correct issues or even take the necessary steps when it comes to resolving computer issues.

This is turning into a mess for troubleshooting.
I click on the link to see what version I have and this appears:
    Windows
Internet Explorer (and other browsers that support Internet Explorer ActiveX controls and plug-ins)
    10.3.183.10
    Windows
Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape, Opera (and other plugin-based browsers)
    10.3.183.10
    Is this my version?
    What's the next step?
Somebody should know the correct procedures to follow.  The step-by-step listings for troubleshooting keep leading me into a circle of download and SAVE....double-click and RN....and then nothing.
    Need help here.

  • Please help me - cannot publish my flash project

    Hi
I'm new to flash mx 2004 and I'm having a problem publishing and playing my finished project. Every time I try to play or publish the project I get a 'The Flash program is out of memory. Please increase virtual memory on your PC' message. I was originally working on a 1 gig RAM PC and thought this was the problem. I've since borrowed a 2 GIG RAM PC which allowed me to do a little bit more work before I got the same problem. I then got a 4 GIG PC and was able to finish the project but if I try to play it or publish it the program crashes. Any Ideas. This is a college project which I need to publish as a windows exe file and I can't do it. I don't know what's wrong. The project is about 280 meg in size. I tried to 'save and compact' but it still crashes. I also tried to debug the flash project and it crashed again. I'm baffled as I think a 4 GIG PC should be ample and I no longer think that this is entirely a RAM problem anyway. Please any suggestions would be appreciated

More goes into compilation than the RAM size, indeed.
Is the file size you mention (280 MB) the size of the SWF or the size of the FLA?
If it is the size of the SWF, then it is likely that your FLA is at least double that, and - while running in the OS, is likely taking upwards of 1GB of the available RAM.  The OS is using this RAM also, as well as any other processes that are running on the computer.
I would say that your best choice, at this point, is to break the project into multiple smaller flash files, that will compile easier and run faster in the completed state.

  • Lost Entire Days Work on Flash Project

I'm getting familiar with Flash CS3 and now I'm wondering: Is
it the more complex, the more intricacy that is put into a Flash
project, the more dangerous it becomes if you go off in a wrong
direction and need to go back to the most recently saved version. I
had to do that today and lost my entire job because going back to
the last saved version did not have all of its 'nuts and bolts' in
place. This is a very hard question to form, because the project
was so involved for my newcomer brain.
The scenario is selecting instances on screen that contain
button symbols. The Adobe Classroom In A Book, Lesson 6 on page
202, has me constructing buttons with up over down and hit and is
asking me to select instances that are not placed on the stage and
click swap. There was no instance of the symbol it named on the
stage so first, I thought I must have eliminated a step, so I
reverted to last saved version but all that did is place me in
unidentifiable territory with missing layers and nothing looking
like it did the last time I saved.
Tell me, is Flash that tedious? or do I need a new fool-proof
way of working so I can go back a few steps without, like I did
today, losing a whole day's worth of work on this project.
I'm really disappointed, as most applications, Photoshop,
Illustrator, etc. you can save versions as you go and return to
them opening exactly as you saved them. Tell me if Flash is strange
compared to other programs. Do I need a specialized way of saving?
I don't like losing a lot of work. It reminds me of the days of
working with the Commodore 64 computer, which would lead you on for
hours and then pfzzzzzz.... everything is gone because of hardware
    errors.
I will stay away from this project for a few days and pick it
up again later, starting from scratch. In the meantime, I hope I
can gain some insight in how to work 'safely' from the experts
    here.
    Thank You,
    Ken

Flash is a little touchy, compared with the long-standing
applications that Adobe has been improving for years. For instance,
having a cursor in a field and then doing a 'select all' will not
select the contents of that field so you can change them, but it
will select most of everything existing on the stage or timeline.
Something to be aware of. As I hack my way to learning Flash, a
most distressful experience, I have discovered that in the above
tutorial that I needed to be aware that the instance I was working
with is named in the property inspector. I was using my instinct to
see what was on the stage without being aware that what is actually
there goes by a name, a name that I can verify in the property
    inspector.
The easiest things are hard for the beginner.
I'll be glad to take the college class in Flash I have lined
up for Winter term. By getting a lot of crying behind me, I will be
able to learn more and interact with the instructor in a more
    meaningful way.

  • Converting cs3 Flash Project ( .flp ) to cs4 Flash Project

    hello;
    I have attempted to convert an old .flp to the new system, according to Flash Help instructions; but when I do, the new converted Project is nothing more than navigation-panel of the directory that contains the project ( .flp );
old .flp's were not directories, but collections of pertinent files, in a relational tree structure that I put together for ease of authoring, such as a bunch of .as files and a few .fla files that might be associated with one_module of a larger app , where...
some of those .as files might be coming from my papervision directory,
some from my personal as3 library,
    and some from a local_directory
thus I have .as files coming from distant places on my computer, and a .flp allows me to put those pertinent .as files into one quick collection; an old .flp might look like:
    my_project
    - module_1
    -- A.as ... located in C://.../.../..././//././././/./../././../?
    -- B.as ... located in C://../../.././../././././././././.../...//./../?
-- C.as ... located in the same directory as the .flp
    -- A.fla
    - module_2
    -- A.as
    -- D.as
    -- E.as
    -- F.as
    - generic_stuff
    according to the new approach ( as I currently understand it )  an entire directory structure(s) - with all the crap that gets dropped into directories while building an app - is the definitive aspect of a Project; furthermore if there are files that are not included in that directory that I want included in the Project, I will have to also include the entire directory that includes that file ... when all is said and done my Project will consist of 30% of all of the crap that is on my computer ... I only wanted 15 or 20 files;
    consider:
    project_root_dir/sub_dir_A/sub_dir_B/sub_dir_C/pertinent_file.fla
    project_root_dir/sub_dir_A/sub_dir_B/sub_dir_C/non-pertinent_readme.txt
    now if I want to quickly open pertinent_file.fla, I have to use the Project panel to navigate down through 3 directories ... but I do that using Windows, so the Project panel has not really helped me;
    and I surely do not want a bunch of clutter, like a readme.txt, included in a project, though I do want that readme in the directory on my computer ... but not in the Project;
    am I missing something?
    thanks,
    dsdsdsdsd

    Nice episode Paul,
    I saw it on http://tv.adobe.com/watch/flash-downunder/converting-a-flash-project-to-air/
you mention the fireworks Icon script in it that makes the relevant size png files.
Can you paste a link where to get it and if it is good for cs6

  • New Mobile Project grayed out...

I have Adobe Captivate 5, Adobe Flash CS5, and Adobe Device Central CS5 (the latter two as part of the Adobe CS5 Production Premium suite. I'd like to experiment with creating some content for mobile devices. I can create a new mobile project in Flash CS5 starting either in Flash or in Adobe Device Central. But I can't do it starting in Captivate, or in Adobe Device Central if I opt for a new project in Captivate.
It seems that Flash is aware of Adobe Device Central, but Captivate is not.
Anyone have this issue or know of a fix?
    Thanks,
    James

    Hi James,
Do know that you will not like my answer, but am afraid that you do have this possibility in Device Central and Flash because both belong to the Production Premium Suite. I do have the eLearning Suite, and have this possibility both in Captivate and in Device Central because they are in the same suite. So it is on the same level as the roundtripping with Soundbooth and with Photoshop (for editing Source file): to have the integration functionality you need to have the eLearning Suite, having the individual applications is not sufficient. I do not like this either
