AE CS5.5: Motion Blur creates random twirl effects on text layer

Hello @ all!
I'm facing the following problem:
I imported a scene rendererd out of Cinema 4D which contains few Null-objects. The Nulls are supposed to be placeholders and they have 3D-Data. They are animated.
When i link my textlayers to the nulls and switch on motion blur, the text layers seem to be affected by a random affect. They twirl all around the scene.
I played around with the shutter angle, but i can only avoid this unwanted effect, when i set it to zero.
Does this have to do with a problem according to the interpretation of the coordinates exported out of cinema 4D?
How could i solve this problem?
Any help is appreciated....
Best,
Paul

Sounds like a problem in the export where angles flip over when gretar than 180 degrees, a.k.a. gimbal lock. Depending on what features you used in C4D this could be perfectly normal, but it could also be a bug in the AEC export. Impossible to tell without seeing the scene, but e.g. using the Align to Spline tag does this consistently if the spline makes turns exceeding those angular limits. Just a normal limitation in that case... So more or less your issue is in C4D, not AE and you need to fix it there.

  • How to add motion blur to the shatter effect?

I am trying to add motion blur to the shatter effect, iv created my own custom shatter map with text that remains after the effect is complete, i have tried to add motion blur through the other blur effects and i have not found one that will do the motion blur correctly.
what im wanting is for there to be motion blur on the pieces that are shattering, any suggestions?

There are suggestions toward the bottom of this page, including a tip using the Timewarp effect. I found this by searching for 'motion blur'.

  • Would love some advice/tips on creating a certain effect on text.

Well, good morning everyone. Pretty straight forward forum here, no sub categories for certain things it seems, heh oh well!
So, here is why I am here. I play Champions Online which is a super-hero based MMO, and I have a character named Sandstorm. I've been working on his "biography" page of sorts where many players put up their characters information, and many players have custom banner names for their character, as a few examples:
    http://www.primusdatabase.com/index.php?title=Emerald_Centurion
    http://www.primusdatabase.com/index.php?title=Osprey
And this one doesn't particularly pertain to what I'm talking about, it's just damn cool and original.
    http://www.primusdatabase.com/index.php?title=Nightchild
So, basically I'd like to be able to create my own banner with a style that would reflect the name, Sandstorm. Sure, I could like some folks just use a certain font and leave it at that. But I can't find one that satisfies me, I'll make one! I can use on the of the fonts, sure, but I'm going to need t add on to it.
What I am hoping to get you fro guys is some with ideas and how I can go about creating them, for this name. Ideally.. I'd like something that would demonstrate sand particles, or sand, being kicked up or whisper away. But that's why I'm here, for thoughts and advice.
    Thanks a ton!

  • How to create a globe effect that text moving around?

Hi everyone, I'm doing a project for my school and I found a effect that looks kinda cool on you tube but I don't know how to create it. This is the link to that video clip:

  • Activating 3d for a layer effects motion blur strangely

    Hello all
I have a comp in which a jpg logo moves quickly across frame into position, I have motion blur enabled for the composition and the layer and it works fine. I would now like to do more work on the composition that involves camera moves so I have enabled 3d for the layer containing the logo and my motion blur, well, doesn't dissapear exactly but neither does it stay.
I have a couple of images here to explain better...
    http://www.tinycards.co.uk/aftereffects
sorry if this is a stupid mistake!
    many thanks

ok half fixed it myself, I discovered the "samples per frame" setting in advanced composition settings
if I set this at 35-40 I get a nice smooth blur.
I have a smaller problem now however ,the 3d version is brighter than the 2d version, I assume this is because of the composite mode it uses to merge the 40 or so frames to make the blur. Is there any way of controlling this accurately?
Also does anyone know why motion blur sample rate is automatic in 2d and not 3d?

  • Motion blur is messing up my composition

    Hey all,
I'm working on a project which involves 3d space (using camera tracker). Everything is going fine until I needed to turn on motion blur for a layer. When i switched it on for the composition, things start to get weird. If you play the video, the null objects visibly "rotate" instantly, move from spot to spot randomly, and it's obvious that something is not right. When i turn off the motion blur, the object right themselves.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I think i can work through it by creating a new composition then dropping the existing into that and turning on motion blur there, but i would rather be able to work with it in the same comp.
I'm working with 1920x1080p footage 30 fps in CS5.5 on a macbook pro 2.52ghz intel core 2 duo. If you need any other info just let me know.
    Thanks
    Dan

OK, here's my best guess. When you turn on motion blur time samples differently. The keyframes that are causing the problems are at a z rotation for the camera of 179º. This made me think you were experiencing a gimbal lock with your camera moves. When the camera gimbal locks the camera orientation flips. It has nothing to do with motion blur being enabled on the layers.
I seldom apply tracking data directly to a camera for this reason. I almost always apply the tracking data to a null then parent the camera to the null. This will prevent gimbal lock problems with the camera.
There is a solution that may work for you. Open up the composition settings, the Advanced tab and change the Shutter phase to 0º. This should prevent the gimbal lock that you're getting. I wouldn't call this a bug, but a better workflow would have prevented the problem in the first place.

  • My text moves to the wrong place when I apply motion blur!

Hello friends! thanks in advance for any able to solve my problem. when ever I apply motion blur to moving text it repositions the text permanently.... I have to delete the motion blur effect in order to have it text stay on course...any suggestions?

"Delete the motion blur effect"?  Sounds like you are applying an effect, rather than turning on motion blur.
Please provide a detailed explanation of the process that causes the problem.  If possible, post a screengrab as well.
Note that Motion Blur, at its core, does alter the position of animation by blurring the disnace between two moments in time.  When you activate motion blur, it samples the position of your text at multiple points in time to create the illusion of motion blur.  If your text is moving very fast, the results can be surprisingly major.

  • MOTION BLUR & LIP SYNC PROBLEM

This problem is with encoding in CS5.
Using Encore to make a DVD I had to Transcode all my assets because of the "end of file" error
on doing this I had 7 clips out of 18 with either motion blur (may be jitter) and audio out of sync with the video but not on all of them.
Then I re encoded my originals in Prem Pro using different settings but still the same problem.
    Your help would be appreciated

    Hi Jim & sellador,
As I am from England all my work is PAL 25 fps
This particular clip has the worst blur or jitter quite painful to watch. Oddly enough plays fine on the time line or viewer but not in WMP or DVD on computer or television (this must tell us something)
I have now done over 20 different outputs the best being de interlace no blur but the quality suffered.
    Right some info:
Material, Original clip as shown in adobe properties: mpeg - 25fps Aspect 4:3 1.094 pixel
    720 x 576 - Upper field first - average bit rate 871kb/s - Audio 48k
Sequence settings: DV PAL upper field first - 25fps  - 1.094 pixel - Audio 48k
    Export settings: MPEG2 - Custom - 720 x 576 - pixel 1.094 - upper field first
    Profile Main - level Main. - Max render Quality - 6.5 - 8.5 mb/s

  • Motion Blur

I have created a dvd (to be played on a TV) as I was viewing it a few of the clips had motion blur. What cause this? How do I fix this problem? Does it stem all the way back to how I imported it into Final cut express or exported it?

When you say "motion blur" is this what you mean? http://support.apple.com/kb/TA22228

  • Exporting HD video to Blu-ray format causes motion blur

    Using Premiere Pro CS4, I have HD video projects that are either 720p30 and 1080i  (60i). The 720p video is  1280x720 (1.0) 60fps. The 1080i footage is 1920x1080 (1.0) at 29.97 fps.
For exporting the video to a format suitable for burning to Blu-ray (using Encore) I've am using  the  MPEG-2 Blu-Ray format using either the HDTV 1080i High  Quality or the  HDTV 720p 59.94 High Quality presets, depending on the  format of the  original video that I'm compiling.
I didn't notice it at first but when I burned first my test Blu-ray disc I found that the video was having some wierd exaggerated motion blur characteristics going on. Any abrupt movment, such as a person turning their head or a video box shrinking from full screen to half screen would be wildly blurred. I thought it might have been a result of the burn but I subsequently found the problem was introduced during the video export process in Premiere Pro. I just didn't catch it because I wasn't looking closely enough.
Because I am using the default settings for the two presets cited above I'm at a loss about what is introducting this blur or how to go about mitigating it. Anyone got any tips? What could be having such a problem making motion which shouldn't blur too much blur so badly? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Ok, I'm stumped for the moment. To better illustrate what's going on I'll post some pics of the problem. I'm using a piece of video that's not part of my projects but it does illustrate what's going on pretty well.
The first is what Premiere Pro is displaying for the source video. I'm currently using a Sequence Preset of DVCPROHD 720P 60P even though I don't have the hardware for it. The reason being is it stopped the blur from happening in the timeline and I think that's because this preset had a 59.94 fps preset and the source video was 60fps.
    http://www.imagebam.com/image/7bd0af110335520
The second is a Premiere Pro frame grab of what the source video file looks like. I'm using an export of Windows Bitmap with a preset of HD Square Pixel Bitmap 720p. I'm using the Progressive setting because if I choose either Upper or Lower first the image looks even worse.
    http://www.imagebam.com/image/9aa895110335495
The third is a Premiere Pro frame grab of what the exported video file looks like. The video was exported using MPEG Blu-ray with a preset of HDTV 720p 59.94 High Quality with no modifications. I'm using an export of Windows Bitmap with a preset of HD Square  Pixel Bitmap 720p. I'm using the Progressive setting because if I choose  either Upper or Lower first the image looks even worse. Incidentally, this exported video displays in the Premiere Pro timeline with visible motion blur characteristics whereas the source video did not.
    http://www.imagebam.com/image/3a2a60110335483
    What these images show.
    1) The source video displays crisp in Premiere Pro even though this is footage of a video transition.
    2) The source video exports out with some motion blur.
    3) When you do a frame grab of the exported video the motion blur of the exported video increases.
As I said, I'm stumped. I've tried modifying every setting in the exporter for  MPEG Blu-ray with a preset of HDTV 720p 59.94 High Quality and I can't stop this blur. I looked at the H.264 Blu-ray setting but it appears useless. Every time I try to export, the exported video crashes Media Player and when I load it into Premiere Pro I see the video now has motion blur.
At this point I'm wondering if upgrading to CS5 will make a difference or not. That's about the only thing I can think of that I haven't tried yet.

  • Motion Blur Seams

Is Motion Blur broken? When rendering 3D surfaces with Motion Blur I get visible seams.
Example - 2 same-colored Solids, butted up against each other without a gap look like one big Solid. But if the camera zooms by the seam between the two Solids becomes visible ... the blurred area becomes less than 100% opaque.
I thought of the CC Force Motion Blur but the render times for my HD comp are insane.
I know this is comparing apples to oranges, but if I perform the same setup (2 planes, moving camera, motion blur) in Softimage, mentalray blurs plane 1 into plane 2 but never 'reveals' the seam with a decrease in opacity.
I tried changing the Renderer but the only option now is "Advanced".
    Thanks

This is just an artifact of how motion blur is calculated in AE. In real life, motion blur happens to the entire image as seen by the eye or the camera. In AE, on the other hand, each layer is blurred separately for efficiency. It's just as if you place two layers side-by-side with their edges meeting, and applied a blur to each layer. You'd get a transparent seam where the blurs overlap, since each layers' pixels are at less than 100% opacity. You can get even uglier artifacts in some cases when a 3D layer's motion blur actually intersects with a layer that would otherwise obscure that blurred layer. Layers can even appear to render out of order in some cases, thanks to this phenomenon.
If precomposing isn't possible the only way to work around this problem (other than resorting to using something like Force Motion Blur on your entire comp) is to add a layer behind the seam to create the illusion of a continuous surface. It can be really tricky, but it is possible to make it look more natural.

  • Standard motion blur on 3d camera uses premature frame samples

Hi there everyone, I was wondering if anyone has ever noticed the following issue:
I have created a couple of 3D layers in AE "space", having a camera zip panning and tilting from one to the other. We're talking like 15 frames rotation moves, so worth a little blurring. Now AE creates a very nice motion blur on those zippy camera moves, be it that half of the sixteen samples needed to calculate the motion blur are taken from the frames yet to come (?????) So, especially in a 'banking' kind of rotation, causing an over time calculated spin blur, the blur itself pops in even before the camera has moved (it's like five frames 'ahead').
Does anyone of you have a similar experience? Is there a workaround without having to create every blur manually?
Oh, by the way, CC Force Time blur crashes on this because it does not like certain effects I used, like Text Anarchy and a couple of standard AE effects (??)
Please help me out on this one. It's easy to recreate this issue: create a new comp, throw in a camera and a video layer and have this video layer rotating round its Z-axis once in a five frames duration, in linear interpolation. Now switch on motion blur for this layer and the timeline. You will notice the blur appears before the video layer has started rotating and when the rotation has stopped, the motion blur is long gone. Appreciate any help, thx.

Hi Mylenium and thanks for taking the time. I appreciate it a lot, certainly when a known AE guru like you picks up a question like this one.
Unfortunately, though I have tried every offset in steps of 90 degrees up to 720, but the problems persists. Maybe a bigger offset helps? Or a negative one (if possible, haven't tried yet...)
I don't think this would be of any importance, but the layers I use are mainly AE generated text layers.... but now that I think of it, the entire camera move was imported from Cinema 4D, so every timeline frame is a lineair camera keyframe as well... 546 frames, and thus 546 keyframes for the poor 3D cam... could that be messing up the motion blur calculation.....?
I guess I will try that right after dinner. Thanks again so far, I feel honoured.

  • Why no Motion Blur when animating a camera?

I think I'm in trouble. I'm finishing a project where a logo (let's call it a box) was built by creating all the sides using solids, then making these solid layers 3D. I then move the CAMERA around the box. That seemed to be a lot easier than trying to move all the 3D layers in front of a camera.
I cannot get any motion blur effect when the camera moves fast. I've tried numerous settings (and of course have the layers enabled for motion blur). Is it not working because the layers aren't in motion? Can I acheive motion blur by animating a camera around 3D layers?

Thanks, but I do have motion blur on for the composition and the layers and the render queue. There is no "switch" to turn motion blur on for a camera layer, and of course no 3D switch for a camera because it's inherently 3D.
I used various motion blur (advanced) composition settings, as well as adjusting the camera's apature, fstop, focal length, focal distance, etc. Can't seem to get any motion blur effect. The camera occasionally whip-pans, slows down, speeds up - so it's certainly moving fast enough.
Just wondering if I should have created a Null layer, parent it to the camera and animate the Null because that does have switches for 3D and motion blur.
Why wouldn't motion blur show when animating a camera around an object?

  • Motion Blur Problem/Potential Bug

    Hi,
I am having a problem when motion blur is activated. My comp. consists of media moving onto screen and 3D cameras moving in and out of the composition. When motion blur is activated the desired effect is created, however when the cameras move in and out on the image (with motion blur activated) the anchor point appears to be affected and it is sent behind the background. The only way I have been able to make the image visible is adjusting the anchor point, but I wanted to figure out if this was a known bug before I do this throughout my entire project.
I am running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit with After Effects 12.2.1.5 on a custom build with i7 3.5Ghz, 16GB Ram, and a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680.
If anyone could give me an idea on if this is a bug that will eventually be addressed or if there is a solution other than adjusting anchor point please let me know.
    Thanks,

I have done quite a bit of research today as to whether this was a bug or a mistake I made and this has happened to other's in after effects, however I got no productive information on if it was a bug or a mistake. To address the other topics you brought up:
    1. I am quite aware that only one camera can be active at a time, and yes I have multiple cameras that are active in differerent sections of my composition, none overlap each other however.
    2. And as far as the anchor moving by itself, it is not necessarly "moving", the anchor position data in the timeline does not change and have no parent or active keyframes. However for a number of frames the image disappears behind the background giving the impression that the anchor point is changed. The reasoning for why I intially thought there was a bug was the image would disappear in the middle of its motion and reappear toward the end of it's movement.

  • Motion blur stops/crashes render

I try to get the motion blur setting to work, but it seems to just crash the render on export.
No matter what resolution/quality setting, the render won't even complete one frame. CPU is working full throttle. If I try to stop the render Motion doesn't respond anymore...
The animation is similiar to the "Swarm-Open HD" template.
Anyone can get that one to render with motion blur on? Any high end machines that can actually handle this template, or is it a bug?
Are there any settings that lower the quality of the motion blur?
    Thanks!

Actually, I have to correct that post. The template is not as complex, as I use a movie and "random image" as the source of the replicator...
