Motion blur stops/crashes render

I try to get the motion blur setting to work, but it seems to just crash the render on export.
No matter what resolution/quality setting, the render won't even complete one frame. CPU is working full throttle. If I try to stop the render Motion doesn't respond anymore...
The animation is similiar to the "Swarm-Open HD" template.
Anyone can get that one to render with motion blur on? Any high end machines that can actually handle this template, or is it a bug?
Are there any settings that lower the quality of the motion blur?
Thanks!

Actually, I have to correct that post. The template is not as complex, as I use a movie and "random image" as the source of the replicator...

  • Motion Blur Seams

Is Motion Blur broken? When rendering 3D surfaces with Motion Blur I get visible seams.
Example - 2 same-colored Solids, butted up against each other without a gap look like one big Solid. But if the camera zooms by the seam between the two Solids becomes visible ... the blurred area becomes less than 100% opaque.
I thought of the CC Force Motion Blur but the render times for my HD comp are insane.
I know this is comparing apples to oranges, but if I perform the same setup (2 planes, moving camera, motion blur) in Softimage, mentalray blurs plane 1 into plane 2 but never 'reveals' the seam with a decrease in opacity.
I tried changing the Renderer but the only option now is "Advanced".
    Thanks

This is just an artifact of how motion blur is calculated in AE. In real life, motion blur happens to the entire image as seen by the eye or the camera. In AE, on the other hand, each layer is blurred separately for efficiency. It's just as if you place two layers side-by-side with their edges meeting, and applied a blur to each layer. You'd get a transparent seam where the blurs overlap, since each layers' pixels are at less than 100% opacity. You can get even uglier artifacts in some cases when a 3D layer's motion blur actually intersects with a layer that would otherwise obscure that blurred layer. Layers can even appear to render out of order in some cases, thanks to this phenomenon.
If precomposing isn't possible the only way to work around this problem (other than resorting to using something like Force Motion Blur on your entire comp) is to add a layer behind the seam to create the illusion of a continuous surface. It can be really tricky, but it is possible to make it look more natural.

  • 3D Motion Tracking Error/Crash in progress [Urgent Help Please!]

    Hey there!
I'm an video editor and I use 3D Motion Tracking a lot but recently every time I use it, it comes up with an error and says crash in progress,
It never used to do it and I can't seem to find any solutions to fix it.
    Computer Specs:
    Manufacturer: Toshiba
    Model: Notebook
Processor: AMD E1-2100 APU with Radeon(TM) HD Graphics 1.00 GHz
Installed Memory: 4.00 GB (3.45 GB Usable)
System type: 64-bit Operating System, x64-based processor
So here's how I get to the problem. (I'll try provide as much detail as possible)
I import a mp4/avi file into After Effects,
    Create a new composition with:
    1280 x 720 (16:9)
    Frame Rate = 30
    Duration = 30 seconds
    Resolution = Third
    Advanced
    Renderer = Classic 3D
    (Boxes Underneath all unchecked)
    Options:
Shadow Map Resolution = Comp Size
    Motion Blur:
    Shutter Angle = 180 Degrees
    Shutter Phrase = -90 Degrees
    Samples Per Frame = 16
    Adaptive Sample Limit = 128
       3.  Drag the mp4/avi into the composition to use it. (1.21 Seconds Long)
       4.  Right click on it and go to Effect > Perspective > 3D Camera Tracker
       5.  The 3D Camera Tracker initializes with these settings:
Shot type = Fixed Angle of View
Show Track Points = 3D Solved
    Track Point Size = 100.0%
    Target Size = 100.0%
       6.   Loads Frames 0% > 100% then as soon as the orange line shows up with Solving camera it shows this,
and when I click okay it shows this,
       and then finally this,
and then it crashes. that's the same process every time and it still comes up with this.
       Help would be appreciated !
       Thank you !

Try rendering an image sequence from your original footage then load that into AE and Camera Track the image sequence. Use the AME to or AE to render a JPEG or PNG image sequence:
It's important to know that some footage cannot be Camera Tracked. In order for camera tracking to work there must be a significant amount of fixed geometry in the scene. For example, if you have a shot of open water like this it cannot be Camera Tracked:
This shot also cannot be camera tracked successfully because most of the frame is moving:
If transcoding or converting the shot to an image sequence does not fix the problem and you don't get a frame rate mis match warning then you could have possibly not given enough memory to other applications in you memory and multi processor settings. Keep memory allocation for other apps in even numbers and make sure that you have not starved the dynamic link server that does camera tracking. If you have the memory 4GB to other apps is absolutely the minimum. If you only have 4GB then give 2 to AE and 2 to other apps.

  • Motion is constantly crashing when exporting a huge project

    Hi Folks,
I just started with Motion a few weeks ago.
After making a lot of rookie mistakes, I think I got the basics now.
Motion opened up a new world of working with videos for me.
But I reached a point, where playing around does not help any more.
I need some advise from a skilled Motion designer.
    My question:
Generally - What are the limits of a Motion 4 project regarding size and complexity and how I can expand it.
In particular - How can I produce a video of my really big motion project.
    My small problem:
When working in Motion, I have to watch the memory usage (I use "istat menus" for this).
When memory becomes almost used up, I save the project then close and re-open Motion.
In the meantime, I have a detailed knowledge of the actions that I should avoid to maximize
the time between the close & re-open actions.
This helps reducing Motion crashes. I think Motion has a bug with memory handling somehow.
Although working with Motion this way is exhausting, this is only my small problem.
    My big problem:
Motion does not export (render) my project. I don't mind waiting 24 hours for the result, but there is no result.
Motion 4 always crashes after some time. Typically after 4 to 5 hours. The whole computer gets stuck,
the only thing I can do is recycle power. I can not show the result of my work. All I can do is blame "the software".
For this I need a solution, and I need it ASAP!
    What I did so far:
    I tried everything. Really…
I do not run any other software parallel with Motion. No Mail, no Safari, no nothing -> this helps a lot while editing !
Disabling render options motion blur, shadows, reflections and DOF helped in the beginning when the project was not finished.
Reducing quality helped in the beginning but I did not tried it again because the results are unusable.
Trashing preferences with "option-CMD Park+Ride" did not help.
Deleting the preference file did help making the software more responsive. Almost no beachballs after that.
Repairing permissions…. Checking filesystem… playing with preferences… nothing helped.
Then I was at a point, where I was mentally prepared for the ultimate step:
I wiped the hard-drive and installed Snow Leopard and FCP from the original DVDs.
Did not help. (BTW this takes a whole working day and half of the night).
Of course, I always apply the latest updates and patches.
Last night, I ordered a new iMAC (27", Quadcore, 8GB Ram) to be sure it is not a hardware defect.
Unfortunately its ETA is 2 weeks.
The machine I am actually using: 24" iMac 3,06MHz core2 duo with 4GB of RAM and GT130.
    About my project:
    length: 42 seconds
    Format: 720p50
Contents: approximately 10 greenscreen videoclips 720p50 ( 10 to 20 seconds long) with Primate RT filter, 100 images (PDF), 500 rectangles.
Camera: one camera with 8 non-overlapping framing behaviors.
plugins: some filters from noise industries and FxFactory. No dubious untested 3-rd party plugins.
    Untested ideas:
    - Output parts of the project and assemble them in final cut. (I got this idea 1 second ago while writing this post). Anyone tried this?
    - Single-stepping through the project and capturing a screenshot of every single frame (42*50 = 2100 oh my god!) Maybe by using a macro?
    - Using a new computer with faster graphic-board and more RAM. As far as I know, Motion is a 32bit application and can not address more than 4 GByte of RAM. Also it will not use more than one CPU core. Will it help anyway?
    - Installing some secret Pro-App beta-patches to fix Motion. Are there any? If so, how to get them?
    - Searching for some hidden file that lists the filter, action or object that caused the last crash. Maybe I only have to rearrange or remove something to make it work perfectly.
Anyone out there who has experience with complex Motion-projects ?
    Byebye and Tschüß
    Manfred

I gave it a try and replaced all *.pdf files by *.psd or *.jpg files, keyed all video clips outside of Motion and replaced the original footage with the assigned keyers, despillers and color-correctors by ready-to-use ProRes4444 files. If this changed anything, then it was very subtle. Without "shadow", "reflections" and "depth of field" applied, I can export the project. This takes 40 minutes or so.
With this three things checked, Motion crashes (see below). The final export also needs to have lights enabled and maybe motion blur.
My big hope is, that the 27" iMac can handle it because of its 8GB Ram and the 4870 Graphics (arrives on Feb,10 thumbs up). The iMac I am using now has only GT130 and 4GB Ram, maybe this is too weak? Otherwise I have to split the project into pieces an assemble them in final cut. There are no cuts, the whole thing is one flow which makes this idea difficult.
Here the latest crash report (although I dont think it makes any sense to anyone but hope dies last):

  • Exporting HD video to Blu-ray format causes motion blur

    Using Premiere Pro CS4, I have HD video projects that are either 720p30 and 1080i  (60i). The 720p video is  1280x720 (1.0) 60fps. The 1080i footage is 1920x1080 (1.0) at 29.97 fps.
For exporting the video to a format suitable for burning to Blu-ray (using Encore) I've am using  the  MPEG-2 Blu-Ray format using either the HDTV 1080i High  Quality or the  HDTV 720p 59.94 High Quality presets, depending on the  format of the  original video that I'm compiling.
I didn't notice it at first but when I burned first my test Blu-ray disc I found that the video was having some wierd exaggerated motion blur characteristics going on. Any abrupt movment, such as a person turning their head or a video box shrinking from full screen to half screen would be wildly blurred. I thought it might have been a result of the burn but I subsequently found the problem was introduced during the video export process in Premiere Pro. I just didn't catch it because I wasn't looking closely enough.
Because I am using the default settings for the two presets cited above I'm at a loss about what is introducting this blur or how to go about mitigating it. Anyone got any tips? What could be having such a problem making motion which shouldn't blur too much blur so badly? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Ok, I'm stumped for the moment. To better illustrate what's going on I'll post some pics of the problem. I'm using a piece of video that's not part of my projects but it does illustrate what's going on pretty well.
The first is what Premiere Pro is displaying for the source video. I'm currently using a Sequence Preset of DVCPROHD 720P 60P even though I don't have the hardware for it. The reason being is it stopped the blur from happening in the timeline and I think that's because this preset had a 59.94 fps preset and the source video was 60fps.
    http://www.imagebam.com/image/7bd0af110335520
The second is a Premiere Pro frame grab of what the source video file looks like. I'm using an export of Windows Bitmap with a preset of HD Square Pixel Bitmap 720p. I'm using the Progressive setting because if I choose either Upper or Lower first the image looks even worse.
    http://www.imagebam.com/image/9aa895110335495
The third is a Premiere Pro frame grab of what the exported video file looks like. The video was exported using MPEG Blu-ray with a preset of HDTV 720p 59.94 High Quality with no modifications. I'm using an export of Windows Bitmap with a preset of HD Square  Pixel Bitmap 720p. I'm using the Progressive setting because if I choose  either Upper or Lower first the image looks even worse. Incidentally, this exported video displays in the Premiere Pro timeline with visible motion blur characteristics whereas the source video did not.
    http://www.imagebam.com/image/3a2a60110335483
    What these images show.
    1) The source video displays crisp in Premiere Pro even though this is footage of a video transition.
    2) The source video exports out with some motion blur.
    3) When you do a frame grab of the exported video the motion blur of the exported video increases.
As I said, I'm stumped. I've tried modifying every setting in the exporter for  MPEG Blu-ray with a preset of HDTV 720p 59.94 High Quality and I can't stop this blur. I looked at the H.264 Blu-ray setting but it appears useless. Every time I try to export, the exported video crashes Media Player and when I load it into Premiere Pro I see the video now has motion blur.
At this point I'm wondering if upgrading to CS5 will make a difference or not. That's about the only thing I can think of that I haven't tried yet.

  • Standard motion blur on 3d camera uses premature frame samples

Hi there everyone, I was wondering if anyone has ever noticed the following issue:
I have created a couple of 3D layers in AE "space", having a camera zip panning and tilting from one to the other. We're talking like 15 frames rotation moves, so worth a little blurring. Now AE creates a very nice motion blur on those zippy camera moves, be it that half of the sixteen samples needed to calculate the motion blur are taken from the frames yet to come (?????) So, especially in a 'banking' kind of rotation, causing an over time calculated spin blur, the blur itself pops in even before the camera has moved (it's like five frames 'ahead').
Does anyone of you have a similar experience? Is there a workaround without having to create every blur manually?
Oh, by the way, CC Force Time blur crashes on this because it does not like certain effects I used, like Text Anarchy and a couple of standard AE effects (??)
Please help me out on this one. It's easy to recreate this issue: create a new comp, throw in a camera and a video layer and have this video layer rotating round its Z-axis once in a five frames duration, in linear interpolation. Now switch on motion blur for this layer and the timeline. You will notice the blur appears before the video layer has started rotating and when the rotation has stopped, the motion blur is long gone. Appreciate any help, thx.

Hi Mylenium and thanks for taking the time. I appreciate it a lot, certainly when a known AE guru like you picks up a question like this one.
Unfortunately, though I have tried every offset in steps of 90 degrees up to 720, but the problems persists. Maybe a bigger offset helps? Or a negative one (if possible, haven't tried yet...)
I don't think this would be of any importance, but the layers I use are mainly AE generated text layers.... but now that I think of it, the entire camera move was imported from Cinema 4D, so every timeline frame is a lineair camera keyframe as well... 546 frames, and thus 546 keyframes for the poor 3D cam... could that be messing up the motion blur calculation.....?
I guess I will try that right after dinner. Thanks again so far, I feel honoured.

  • How do I motion blur and object?

I have an Ace Of Spade playing card that I scanned as a PSD.
I imported it into Motion and moved it around the scene. I want to apply a motion blur to it but when I use the movement blur filter it does not motion blur the object.
    What am I doing wrong?

There's info about motion blur in Motion's help. You don't need a filter for this. Motion blur is part of the Project and View settings. Project settings determine how much blur and how it is sampled. View settings turn it on and off for display and determine whether blur carries over to FCP. You need to do a couple things to get motion blur to work. First, check Motion blur under the View settings in Motion. Second, go to your sequence settings in FCP and under Render Control set Master Templates and Motion Projects quality to Best. Settings of Draft and Normal will not include motion blur. The amount of blur is controlled by the shutter angle and sample settings in the Motion project settings.
BTW, the filter you tried is for blurring motion in clips that already contain motion. For example, you could exaggerate the motion blur of cars moving through an intersection. When the cars move, the filter blurs them. When they stop, the blur stops. Make sense?

  • Motion Blur help.

Alrighty, I'm using Photoshop CS4 Extended, and I'm having troubles with motion blur.
When I set the angle to anything above 60 really and distance to about 300 it crashes saying Adobe Photoshop CS4 has encountered a problem and needs to close.
This happens every time. So I tried restarting Photoshop, then restarting my computer, then I uninstalled and reinstalled fresh and it still crashes when I begin to use motion blur, infact I believe it even crashed just by opening the motion blur window for over 40 seconds.
    Any help or ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks a lot Mylenium! I'll do that in a few minutes, by the way heres an update with some more information.
Photoshop crashes when I change the angle to 49 or higher, anything lower is fine.
I went to my event viewer and I found this:
Faulting application photoshop.exe, version 11.0.0.0, faulting module mmxcore.8bx, version 11.0.0.0, fault address 0x0000d62a.

  • Motion Blur doesn't work in Final Cut Pro

I've been working on stuff and int he past Motion Blur worked and now when I use it the motion blur has refused to work as a preview or after I render it. Is there something i'm doing wrong that's making it happen?
I'm using Mac OS X Leopard, the latest final cut pro and i'm using blue and green screen and Chroma Keyer and image control sinc ei'm making a sillouette and it's worked for me before.
If someone can reply and suggest anything that would be awseome.

Does your object to be blurred actually move...if not then use a blur filter
When you check the motion blur box and click the disclosure triangle what is the Blur percentage? did you try increasing it? If so does it make a difference?

  • Motion blur options?

    Hello!
I'm working on a new project. Footage is being recorded from a game at 300 fps (then resampled to 30). I'd like to achieve the same motion blur as for footage take with a normal camera. I tried a few things but I'd like to see if there are some other options:
Plain frame blending from framerate resampling from 300 to 30.
Reel Smart Motion Blur plug-in without frame blend switch on. Looks pretty decent at first sight and renders reasonably fast. But under closer inspection it shows a lot of incorrect interpolation at a lot of elements.
Reel Smart Motion Blur plug-in with frame blending switch on. Similar to the previous example.
CC Force Motion Blur plug-in with interpolation switch on. Produces a great result at a cost of really long render times. Also i have no idea where to set the shutter phase (native shutter and interpolating dont work together?).
    Are there any other options?
    Thanks a bunch.

    Hey guys,
its been a while and Im playing around with motion blur of high fps footage again.
I've tried the effect CC Wide Time which blends a designated number of frames before and after the current frame.
I have footage recorded at 1000 fps. In comparison frame mix would blend 40 frames into a single frame (1000 fps to 25 fps) which would represent a shutter angle of 180° (i believe). That doesn't look smooth enough in my mind, so in CC Wide Time i set the values to 80 frames total (39 ahead, 40 behind, 1 current just to be accurate ), which represents the shutter angle of 360° with a phase of -180°.
Now the problem is that i would like to time remap the clip. After a precomp i time stretch the clip to obtain the real life time scale - 1000 fps to 25 fps, with the motion blur i describe above. If i enable time remap and start playing with slowmotion the intensity of motion blur intesity (blurred frames) stays the same, which isnt right. A way to fix that would be to use a linear 40 -> 0 frames blended corresponding to the velocity achieved by timeremaping, but i cant seem to find a way to use clip velocity in expressions.
I could use timewarp and use speed value instead of time remap, but that seems like a pain especially when i think of applying ease to the keyframes.
To think all of this could be avoided if CC Force Motion Blur would offer shutter phase.
    Any thoughts on the issue?
    Thanks!

  • MOTION BLUR & LIP SYNC PROBLEM

This problem is with encoding in CS5.
Using Encore to make a DVD I had to Transcode all my assets because of the "end of file" error
on doing this I had 7 clips out of 18 with either motion blur (may be jitter) and audio out of sync with the video but not on all of them.
Then I re encoded my originals in Prem Pro using different settings but still the same problem.
    Your help would be appreciated
    johnacs5

    Hi Jim & sellador,
As I am from England all my work is PAL 25 fps
This particular clip has the worst blur or jitter quite painful to watch. Oddly enough plays fine on the time line or viewer but not in WMP or DVD on computer or television (this must tell us something)
I have now done over 20 different outputs the best being de interlace no blur but the quality suffered.
    Right some info:
Material, Original clip as shown in adobe properties: mpeg - 25fps Aspect 4:3 1.094 pixel
    720 x 576 - Upper field first - average bit rate 871kb/s - Audio 48k
Sequence settings: DV PAL upper field first - 25fps  - 1.094 pixel - Audio 48k
    Export settings: MPEG2 - Custom - 720 x 576 - pixel 1.094 - upper field first

  • Motion Blur caused by Shutter Speed 50?!

    Hi All,
I'm a GH2 user. Shoot in 50i-50ss-5.6f. I realized that is an effect such like "Motion Blur" which caused by the low shutter speed as I mentioned (50ss). Search around some forum, it is quite common. In fact, it looks not really comfortable to me! How do you solve this issue or perhaps reducing/smoothen the motion blur issue?
Picture like focus clear & sharp while talent do not move to left or right. Once his/her head move to left or right, there is motion blur after it. In fact, facused while talent did not move his/her head then.
    Thanks!

    David,
Thanks for the prompt reply and confirmation.
Perhaps, 1/50 producing slow shutter speed result--motion blur? It just like a man walk from left to right in front of my cam, and the man will be blur in motion during the recording. It'll only stay focused while the man stop and stand still. Double up the shutter speed will helps this? like 1/100? Might need your opinion.
Some friends ask me "are you shooting a speedy subject?". Not really that speed or fast. Just like what i've mention above, perhaps just walking...turn around...hand up...those might blur in 1/50 shutter speed with fully Continuos Focus Function.
I'm just curious, how could those GH2 friends shooting a Dance Genre Music of MV? They are dancing, moving fast enough...but, surprise, MV is just sharp and stay focused on every person! What do you say?
Is those below's MV consider pretty smooth? Can you tell what's the shutter speed on those? Continuos Focus + Manual Focus in use?
Thanks for now and hear from you soon! Apprciate to your precious time to answer

  • Scaled down, rendered clips have weird motion blur

I have a project I'm doing in FCP 4.5 on a G5. I have several clips that I have scaled down to 55% and have positioned at even X,Y coordinates. The project is rendered, but I get a weird motion blur happening - like when you're watching a low grade QT movie. I have copied and pasted the sequence into a new project/sequence timeline and re-rendered. I have motion blur selected in my main user preferences (render options) and in the sequence settings (render options).
Any ideas why I'd be having this problem? I don't want to have to go to the length of recapturing the source footage, but I'm almost at that point.
    Any thoughts?

Are you monitoring this on an external NTSC monitor or TV? You cannot judge the quality of your images as viewed on the computer screen.

    Shane's Stock Answer #2:
    1. Disable overlays on the canvas
    2. Make sure you've rendered everything (no green bars at the top of the timeline

DV footage requires large amounts of data and many computations. In order to maintain frame rate and be viewable at a normal size, only about one-fourth of the DV data is used in displaying the movie to the screen. However, the DV footage is still at full quality, and is best viewed thru a TV or NTSC monitor routed thru your camera or deck.

  • Motion blur causes opacity shift

Whenever I apply motion blur to my project, the opacity of the individual elements seems to jump to around 50% when I render, even objects that aren't moving. Is this a known problem or just something that my system might be generating?

Sorry, I cannot duplicate this for you. Neither manually setting opacity KFs nor using Fade behavior produce any change in my HD layer group resolution.
I usually avoid anything that truncates a Motion (or AE) movie project and build in some handles so I can handle transitions in the editor (unless the effect is only available in AE or Motion).
what happens if you just fade in out in the FCP timeline? If it still blurs, there's a render setting amiss, regardless of what your machine is indicating for settings.
Hope you get more beneficial responses.

  • Why no Motion Blur when animating a camera?

I think I'm in trouble. I'm finishing a project where a logo (let's call it a box) was built by creating all the sides using solids, then making these solid layers 3D. I then move the CAMERA around the box. That seemed to be a lot easier than trying to move all the 3D layers in front of a camera.
I cannot get any motion blur effect when the camera moves fast. I've tried numerous settings (and of course have the layers enabled for motion blur). Is it not working because the layers aren't in motion? Can I acheive motion blur by animating a camera around 3D layers?

Thanks, but I do have motion blur on for the composition and the layers and the render queue. There is no "switch" to turn motion blur on for a camera layer, and of course no 3D switch for a camera because it's inherently 3D.
I used various motion blur (advanced) composition settings, as well as adjusting the camera's apature, fstop, focal length, focal distance, etc. Can't seem to get any motion blur effect. The camera occasionally whip-pans, slows down, speeds up - so it's certainly moving fast enough.
Just wondering if I should have created a Null layer, parent it to the camera and animate the Null because that does have switches for 3D and motion blur.
Why wouldn't motion blur show when animating a camera around an object?

  • What resolution are you running your 30inch Apple monitor with?

(NTSC)I have an 8core mac with the 30" cinema display. The only resolution that looks sharp with FCP is 2560 by 1600 but the motion adjustment window in FCP is too small. I've tried other resolutions but the only other one that matched the 30" side t
