AE CS5 vs AE CC rendering

Hi Adobe users,
I am currently using a brand new 27" iMac. Core i7, 16 GB RAM, 4 GB VRAM graphics and Fusion Drive.
I upgraded from my 2011 model which had a Core i5, 16 GB RAM, 512 MB VRAM and a traditional HD.
Rendering times have definitely improved, but I thought I would see better. If I upgrade to AE CC, any thoughts on whether I'll be seeing improved rendering times? I'm talking about RAM Previews if that matters. When I'm finished with a comp I'll export it as a 720p ".mov" file.
For reference, what I animate.... I take 1080p video and scale that around a 720p frame in AE. Then I drop in my cartoon characters which are ~7,000x7,000 pixel puppets created in Photoshop. That is basically the extent. Slow RAM previews are a pain if I need to change a tiny little part in an animation. I do realize I could drop the resolution down.
Basically I'll happily spring for CC if I would see faster rendering on my machine. Any input would be great!

RAM, CPU, and disk speed are the most important things. Only consider the GPU after you've taken care of those other things.

  • No Audio In After Effects CS5.5(Even after rendering)

I currently have the After Effects CS5.5 Trial Version installed. I am running into a bad audio problem. For the first 2 days I have used it, the audio was fine, it played automatically and I didn't even have to render first to get it. Then, the third day, I got on that day and the audio jsut flat out didnt work. I did look it up on the forums and google, and nothing helped. I have tried rendering(with audio), using different video files and clips, and even reinstaling the trial. Nothing worked. The RAM Preview plays sound fine, and when I double-tap "L", the soundwaves do show, and they are accurate when played on the preview. I have tried WMV, AVI, and mp4 files, none of which have worked. I can edit and add effects and import picture and other files fine, but the audio simply doesnt work. I can't get audio by playing it normally.
I know it is not usual to ask questions about the trial, or to even have them answered, but this is important because I want to buy After Effects CS5.5, and before I do, I need to know if this is a computer problem, or if I did something to mess up the program, or if there is even a way to solve it. I don't want to buy it and realize I can't even use it with audio for some reason.
P.S. I am fairly new to this, so if you blast me with some complex, in-depth instructions, please try to make it rather simple, or just explain it well.
Thank You and sorry for the inconvenience,
    Chris Madaras

    >  I can't get audio by playing it normally.
You said that audio played when you used RAM preview. That is how you play audio.
    See this:
"FAQ: How can I play or preview sound (audio)?"
    ...and this:

  • CS5 Encore Animated Menu Rendering Problem

Anybody who could help! I am still experimenting but haven't find the solution (either very simple, or a serious bug ). Here is the problem: If I do any edit on the menu after setting the poster frames and/or inserting a motion (avi) or still (wav) background and re-render the menu, it plays the audio but shows the highlights only on a black background. Before rendering, all the (non-moving) background and/or the button pictures can be seen. For a simple experiment, I use the  "NTSC Blank Menu" from the "General" Set in the Library panel with the "Drive-in Video Button". My only solution at this point is to start from the beginning with the Blank Menu and copy everything from the non-functioning menu, and insert the background and/or the button pictures (via the poster frame selection), but do not touch anything at this point, and render it, it works as it supposed to. I checked the layers in Photoshop and there is no difference between the functioning and non-functioning menu layer sets. (It points to the animation part as a possible culprit in Encore.) Also, I couldn't find any way to just remove/reinsert the background/button pictures and make it work. This might even be a quirk only with this menu? I would greatly appreciate any suggestion. - Laci.

    Hi LaciG,
I just encountered the same problem tonight. So I knew exactly what you were refering to.  I tried several approaches to work around this issue including erasing the motion menu background source file and re-importing in and starting the menu from scratch again and neither worked.  Eventually I did find a work around here it goes:  First I erased the buggy menu and motion menu source file (AVI).  Next  I copied the whole Encore project file and renamed it.  Then I copied and renamed the avi file I used as the motion menu.  After this I went in and used the template menu I originally used but renamed it in the asset list.  Like you said when ever you mess with the menu like changing the chapter timeline poster or such, it messes up the render.  So I made sure everything was the way it needed to be then added the AVI to the motion menu.  I re-rendered and it worked.  I know this is convoluted but it works, I guess this a good start but I may work on finding out what specific step it was in the process that did it.  I had a similar problem in CS4 but could never figure out how to fix it and now that I have Windows 7 using CS4 Encore was a nightmare so I switched to CS5 and ran into the same bug as you. Well I hope this helps

  • After Effects CS5-best settings for rendering many large files after multiple passes with the clone

I have a moderate level Quad core PC,specs below, with 24Gb of RAM.
I am processing sequences of timelapse photos brought in from Adobe RAW as either a raw sequence at the original 5K res (Canon 5D2) or as 4K 16bit TIFFs. There are typically between 400-500 shots in each sequence.
I use clone brush in AE CS5 to remove 'stray objects' such as birds, people or vehicles from frames.
I can succesfully process these if I only have to clone out the odd object from a sequence, but occasionally I require to remove something on multiple frames. This might be a car that drove into shot and stayed for say 200 frames before driving away again.
The clone tool lets me paint out the arrival and then the parked vehicle by successively using the previous frame as the source. However at some point, even with say 16-20 Gb set as the AE memory, the program will get choked and start to crawl. This knocks on to the final render, when I will get outragous times for rendering even single frames, say 3 hours per frame etc.
I assume that AE is having to go back through many multiple source frames as the cloning that I have done is continually using the previous 'already cleaned up frame' as the source. So frame 150 is using frame 149, which used frame 148 etc.
Observing the Resource Monitor as AE renders, I see not much Processor usage, tyically 20-30% but maxed out Memory. Lots of reading of files off disk, usually apparently 'random' Windows system files, but also lots or reads from the timelapse source files as well.
I did get single render times down to 1 hour but then did more tweaking and haven't got back to anything better than 2.5 hours per frame since!
Is there a better way of achieving what I want?
My PC specs and set up: HP xw8600 with x5450 Quad core processor.
24 Gb RAM set usually as 16 Gb for AE (3 cores) and 1 core with max 3Gb for other progs. Sometimes I have set this to up to 20Gb fror AE.
Running Vista Business (yes I know Win7 would be better-but hey it's yet more money!).
Nvidia GTX460 1Gb memory with Cuda 'hack'-which works well with PP CS5.
Windows Page File set to about 20% more than Windows usually sets it to, on either separate SATA drive or dual with the Windows C drive.
Source files on external USB 3 drive (pretty fast).
AE render files on RAID 0 internal 7200 drive.
AE output files to another external USB3 drive.
Any suggestions for improving my set up would be appreciated, as I'm getting old watching AE render my projects!

Is there a better way of achieving what I want?
Don't use AE? Just kidding, but your own analysis very much covers the facts already. Yes, it's AE going back and forth in time and yes, it's the holding of those frames in memory which is chewing up your memory. Depending on the situation you may look into patching up your disturbances with masked still images rather than cloning across the sequence, but beyond that I don't see much potential to make things more efficient. It's just AE trying to be über-smart with caching and then making a mess. The only other thing is the RAW import, which may consume unnecessary memory. Batching the files in Photoshop and only using PSDs or TIFFs in AE may squeeze out an extra GB of RAM. On that note also consider doing the cleanup in PS. After all, PS Extended does support video/ image sequences to some degree...

  • Illustrator CS5 not responding during rendering

    Hi,
I have a strange problem that I don't understand, maybe someone can help me?
I run Illustrator CS5 on a win7 64bits / i7 / 8 Go RAM / ATI Radeon HD 5470 and each time I want to apply a simple 3D effect (3D rotation), AI is freezing during the rendering... The aim is to do a disco ball by revolution of a half circle with a map art for the disco ball faces. Everything is OK until I try to change the disco ball perspective axis! Illustrator is not responding anymore and win7 ask me for closing the program.
I have already try different issues without success:
    - change the scratch disk
    - improve the performance : closing all running applications, simplify win7 display settings (disable aero,...), clean/defrag the disk, the register and memory, define a swap up to 24 Go
    - ramdisk dedicated to readyboost, scratch disk of AI and swap
It usually freezes after 50% progression, with the optimized performance it goes sometimes until 90%...
    Thank you in advance!

You simply have too many blend steps and it's running out of memory. Expand the "More" section to control that.

  • After Effects CS5 and CS6 Quicktime Rendering Error

    Hi there
Recently I have a challenge with rendering in Quicktime output, one day my AE just stopped rendering my videos in Quicktime formats, specially "Photo Jpeg", I had AE CS5.5 on that moment. I shift to CS6 and yet the problem exists. The error number is: -1610153464 and for better understanding here is a screen capture of the error:
I went through all the existing discussion and forums but sadly no one was helpful, I tried evrything and no result. Surprisingly rendering in other formats are perfectly fine and fast, only Quicktime seems has problem.
Please someone help me out here, it just stops me from my daily works and projects, thank you so much.

I shift to CS6 and yet the problem exists.
How can you? It's not even released yet.
Please someone help me out here, it just stops me from my daily works and projects, thank you so much.
Again, how can it? If you are already using CS6, you are either using a prerelease version and discussions about bugs and issues have no place on a public forum or on the other hand you are simply using it illegally. Everything else - yes, that's a Quicktime error, but since you did not provide any more information, nobody can help you. we need to know exact settings, system specs, file storage options, Quicktime version etc.

  • Problems playing .f4v files in CS5.5 that were rendered from CS5.5?

Premiere Pro CS5.5 seems to have trouble playing .f4v files that it has rendered? I basically edit my video, (uncompressed .mov) export it as a .f4v file for YouTube which is about half an hour in length. I then get that half an hour video and do a video preview of what happened over the half hour… like a montage. I used to export my videos to .mp4 and I never had any problems when trying to do my montage edits, but now that I am using .f4v CS5.5 freezes the video but the audio keeps playing, the video won't play at all or it freezes during transitions (and the transitions are rendered before I try to playback my clips) The bottom line is that the .f4v format has never played back perfectly once and I could understand this if I had got the file from somewhere else but I rendered it from CS5.5? Can anybody help me with this please.
    Thank you
    Bird

Hi Jim, thanks for your reply What you have suggested, is what I think I will do. I think I'll create a new sequence from my exisiting sequence and do my montage edits that way instead of using .f4v or .mp4. Do you know why I was able to edit my montages from .mp4 with no problem but not from .f4v file format which was rendered from CS5.5? I just wondered why as this seems odd to me.
    Thank you in advance.

  • Encore CS5 slideshow transitions not rendering reliably to DVD

I'm trying to create a relatively simple slideshow DVD in Encore CS5 on Mac (10.6).  The slideshow is about 35 images long, and most of the transitions are cross-dissolves.  However, there are exceptions: a couple of the transitions have no effect (ie, snap from one slide to the next).  All of the slides but one are manual advance.
The problem I'm having is that the cross-dissolve time (most are set to 3 seconds, vs. the default 2) seems to render as a variable length: hit the "next chapter" button on the DVD control, and the transition time might be the requested 3 seconds, but is occasionally zero seconds, or 1 second, or 2 seconds.  I haven't been able to find the rhyme or sense behind this, although I haven't devoted much time to studying it either.  The settings on each slide appear to be set correctly (ie, transition type set to "Cross-dissolve" and transition time set to 0:00:03:00) in the project.
An additional complication comes from the one autofollow slide in the show: it automatically advances as expected, but at the next manual transition, it cross-dissolves, appears to pop back to the image, then does the cross-dissolve again, finally ending up in the correct slide.
Due to project deadlines, I've given up trying to make this work in Encore and moved to a different product, but I'd appreciate any feedback on how to do this all correctly next time.

Many users have problems with Encore slideshows. The major advantage is the manual advance. I don't use them, so have little to offer.
The settings on each slide appear to be set correctly (ie, transition type set to "Cross-dissolve" and transition time set to 0:00:03:00) in the project.
I worry that your "set x:xx IN THE PROJECT" means that you have not checked each slide duration. It is possible to have a project setting, but for individual slides to have been set to something else.

  • AE CS5 - Duplicated comp not rendering with custom camera

    Hello
I hope this is a simple fix.
I have an AE comp that uses a custom camera and many 3D layers.
I duplicated the comp, and the new comp will not render using the custom camera. It uses a default camera which does not have my camrea's attributes, and it looks all wonky.
Is there a place where I can force the render to use a specific camera? I didn't see an option in the render settings or output module.
    Thanks
    ----------S

In that screenshot, the text is too tiny for me to make anything out.
I can tell that you're previewing in the Composition panel with your shotCam. But is that camera layer the active camera in the composition?
In case you're not clear on what the active camera is, here's an excerpt from After Effects Help:
"You can choose to view a composition through the active camera or through a named custom camera. The active camera is the topmost camera in the Timeline panel at the current time for which the Video switch is selected. The active camera view is the point of view used for creating final output and nesting compositions."

  • Static text in textfields renders differently when published in CS4/CS5

    Hi
I am experiencing an issue where legacy files I created in Flash CS4 look different when published in CS5. Fonts are rendered differently. I have noticed it so far on DIN and Goudy Modern. The output when published in is CS5 is markedly different than the output when published in CS4.
Can anyone offer any pointers on how to think about, deal with, avoid etc.
    Many thanks.
    Mike
    UPDATE
A little more logic to add.
It seems to be opening the file in CS5 changes the fonts somehow. CS4 files that I have not opened in CS5 publish as I would expect in CS4. CS4 files that I have opened in CS5 publish differently whether then published in CS5 or CS4. On Goudy for example. In CS5 adding .5 to the character spacing and 3.5 (not 2) to the line spacing makes the font render similarly in CS5 as it did in CS4 at 0 character spacing and 2 on the line height.

Yes. It's static. I recreated the text and now it works. Weird.
Thank you for your reply and time.

  • CS5.5 Rendering everything blue when queued from Prem Pro

My project is a custom 800x600 / 29.97 canvas using Quicktime Animation as the codec. Export> Media from Premiere Pro CS5.5. Using "Match Sequence Settings".
If I Export from Premiere Pro, it renders fine. But if I Queue the project into Adobe Media Encoder CS5.5, everything is rendered blue. And I mean really blue! Any guesses what is going on?

    Hi everyone.
    Okay, some news from me:
The problem also occurs exporting directly from Premiere Pro with a certain clip in the timeline
    The problematic Clip is QT MOV 1920 x 1080 25P H.264
Applying Crop to this clip solves the problem
Using AME the problem occurs all over the timeline, but not at full certain clips, it occurs somewhere within the range of some clips
All Clips are QT MOV 1920 x 1080 25P PNG (except the one mentioned before that makes the problem even directly from Premiere Pro, this is H.264)
I have no special hardware, doing everything software even without NVidia-GPU
Exporting from 2 different machines give same (wrong) results.
    MPEG I-Frame-only-Preview renders fine!
Everything is up to date according to the Adobe-Updater...
This is still extremely annoying, because QT provides the only reliable multi-compatible container with that much codecs available - especially the lossless well-compressing PNG-codec. For me this is an evil gap in workflow, QT PNG is my "allways and everywhere"-transport-codec!
By the way, is Premiere Pro capable of doing command-line rendering like AE? This way I could use Backburner to render from Premiere directly without using AME. I think it has to be capable of this, I suspect that AME does it this way. So if it is, can anyone tell me where to find the documentation for this? I didn´t find in in PrPro-help.
    Thank you.
    Sascha

  • CS5 Rendering on a Nvidia GTX285 and Display on a Radeon

    Hi,
I am trying to migrate to windows 7/64 and have used the Nvidia video processors for many years. I am currently using a GTX 285 with Premier Pro CS5 and the realtime rendering works exactly as advertised, it is truly phenomenal to see my effects immediately.
Unfortunately Nvidia has abandoned spanning the desktop accross two monitors, a feature that is built into ATI Radeon video cards. I would like to switch my displays over to a Radeon card and retain the Nvidia card in the system just for rendering.
Will CS5 still recognize the Nvidia card and use it for rendering?
    Has any tried this configuration?
Any hints on how best to go about this?

    Hi Manuel,
Please answer this time. I am going to replace my entire system, because my mother board does not support SLI.
I need to know from you exactly what cards in SLI configuration support horizontal spanning under windows 7.
I do not need brands, just the gpu's
    Please answer
    Gerard
There  is no horizontal span support for any of our graphics cards under  Windows 7, either Quadro or Geforce.  We do have a feature called NVIDIA  Surround which is like Horizontal Span but requires 3 monitors.  It  will not work across two monitors only.  Also, all three monitors are  required to run at the same screen resolution, refresh rate and sync  polarity.
Since you are building a new system, any of the 400  series supports GPUs will support 2D NVIDIA Surround.  For more  information, you can visit the system requirements page at:
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/3dv-system-re...technology.html
Horizontal Span is only supported at this time under Windows XP.

  • Ps CS6 Problem: Incorrect rendering of pasted Adobe Illustrator vector objects

    Ps CS6 v13.0.1
    OS X 10.6.8
Problem: Ps CS6 incorrectly renders vector objects pasted from Adobe Illustrator. CS5.1 does not exhibit the problem.
Below is screenshot of artwork in Illustrator and which is copied to clipboard, followed by screenshot of "Paste as Smart Object" in Ps CS5.1 then screenshot of same paste in CS6. "Paste as Pixels" gives identical good rendering in CS5.1 and poor rendering (gray pixels which should be pure white in this example) in CS6. This is repeatable with other artwork.
Several weeks ago there was a complaint in this forum that Photoshop CS6 poorly renders vector artwork that is pixel-aligned in Illustrator. The Adobe response was that Photoshop is correct. Strange that CS5.1 can render pasted vector artwork perfectly and only CS6 makes a mess.

What's the explanation for the following sequence?
    1. Paste as Smart Object, at moment after pasting and before clicking the commit icon (no transform was made) in options bar. The object is rendered pixel-perfect.
    2. After the commit. The object is poorly rendered with gray pixels which should be white.
    3. Press Cmd+T for transform mode. The object is rendered pixel-perfect again.
    4. After canceling transform mode, the object is poorly rendered again.

  • What is wrong with the stroke in Photoshop CS5??

The stroke tool (in the edit menu as well as the stroke effect) is a bit screwed up in CS5!! It renders really jaggy. Is this something that Adobe will fix soon?
    thanks;
    J.

    Hi;
Thanks for the replies. I apologize for the "emotional" post. I should have provided more detail. I'm using PSD CS5 12.0.2 on a Mac Pro, running 10.6.7. I recently was upgraded to CS5, so yesterday was my first day using CS5. So to my dismay, a simple thing like stroking an object was not working as expected. I typically use shape layers, and stroke them with a stroke effect (although this issue is visible by stroking from the edit menu). I believe the image I attached showcases this issue. The black circle is a simple circle shape layer. The red stroke is visibly "jagged" and not a perfect circle.  So not sure what is going on with my setup or if this is a preference or setting that needs to be turned on or off. Appreciate any insight.
    thanks;
    John
