AEBS Gigabit 802.11n FW 7.2.1 - OS X 10.5.1 Port Mapping HELP!!!!

I have a AEBS with Gigabit Ethernet upgraded to Firmware 7.2.1. I am running OS X Leopard 10.5.1 and I am unable to successfully forward ports. Every time I query a port that I believe to have mapped successfully it appears closed using canyouseeme.org.
I have followed numerous instructions, but they all seem to be instructions for Tiger, I'm wondering if a setting has been missed. I have successfully assigned a static IP address to my machine but still the port appears to be closed. I do run the Leopard firewall using specific applications option (the third one), but I have also tried it with the firewall off and it still hasn't changed anything, the ports are always closed.
So now I'm pretty much stumped. Has any one actually managed to get a setup similar to mine working, with the ports being open? All advice appreciated.

Try the following to see if it will help ...
To setup port mapping on an 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), either connect to the AEBSn's wireless network or temporarily connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to one of the LAN port of the AEBSn, and then use the AirPort Utility, in Manual Setup, to make these settings:
1. Reserve a DHCP-provided IP address for the host device.
Internet > DHCP tab
o On the DHCP tab, click the "+" (Add) button to enter DHCP Reservations.
o Description: <enter the desired description of the host device>
o Reserve address by: MAC Address
o Click Continue.
o MAC Address: <enter the MAC (what Apple calls Ethernet ID if you are using wired or AirPort ID if wireless) hardware address of the host computer>
o IPv4 Address: <enter the desired IP address>
o Click Done.
2. Setup Port Mapping on the AEBSn.
Advanced > Port Mapping tab
o Click the "+" (Add) button
o Service: <choose the appropriate service from the Service pop-up menu>
o Public UDP Port(s): <enter the appropriate UDP port values>
o Public TCP Port(s): <enter the appropriate TCP port values>
o Private IP Address: <enter the IP address of the host server>
o Private UDP Port(s): <enter the same as Public UDP Ports or your choice>
o Private TCP Port(s): <enter the same as Public TCP Ports or your choice>
o Click "Continue"

  • Best way to configure Airport Extreme Gigabit 802.11n

    Hi, new to this router stuff. Just bought the Airport Extreme Gigabit 802.11n. Seems to be working much better than my old router furnished by my cable company. Still, wondering how to get the most out of it. So, have a few questions...
    1. How do I know If I'm getting the "n" connection. Don't know if the modem they gave me works with this. Is there a way to see which connection is working? G/B/N?
    2. Channels: I'm on 6 by default. Is it worth trying others to see if one is faster than another? How?
    3. Firewall: I was told the router already has a firewall in it. So, turned off the firewall on my mac 24. If true, do I still need to configure this firewall on the router side? HOw? To what? Don't know the best configuration to use as a rookie.
    4. Any other ideas to tweek this baby to get the most out of it?

  • AEBS Dual 802.11n (v2) vs 802.11 (v1)

    I have all the last three AEBS namely:
    1) 802.11n 5Ghz (no simultaneously dual band)
    2) 802.11n 5Ghz (simultaneously dual band - first version)
    3) 802.11n 5Ghz (simultaneously dual band - second version with extended coverage)
    The last airport was just bought less than 24 hours. Copied over the setting from 2) with changes to SSID and router name, it is up and running. The biggest issue is that this Airport is a lemon and I'm seeking confirmation if it behave like this in your units.
    I expect to use 802.11n 5Ghz and 802.11 b/g 2.4Ghz. This is to allow backward compatibility to mobile devices who can't be in 5Ghz while offering interference free (relatively) 5Ghz to my macs. To my disappointment, the 5Ghz maximum download test is only 1 mbits or lower, while the 2.5Ghz can achieve 25 Mbits (maximum cable modem speed).
    The second model of Airport which doesn't offer 'extended range' works best in 5Ghz achieving 25 Mbits in 5 Ghz.
    So the last model basically unusable in 5Ghz. I search the internet and found only one confirmation that the 5Ghz in the current series is not working as it should consistent to my findings. Is this true?
    If that's true, I prefer to have the non-extended range model instead (which is no longer sold). Apple, there is no update after 5 months... not even the firmware 7.5 and Airport utility 7.5 in the current AEBS is not even made public..

    this is my understanding
    the latest airport extreme (mc340ll/a)is 802.11n final, official, ratified, etc. it is 3 x 3 for transmit and receive.this airport has 4 internal antennas. this airport is not based on an internal atheros card like the older airports. which probably explains why there isn't going to be any firmware updates to the older airport series.
    im thinking of kicking back and waiting a while before buying this unit to see if the reports of the 5ghz settle. although amazon recently had a gold box deal on this airport extreme for $9 off
    you can still get older airports. the apple store sold the older airports refurbished for $129 but they are out of stock.
    there is a total of 3 simultaneous airport extremes.
    early 2009 = the original
    october 2009 = "antenna improvements"
    ??? 2009 or ???? 2010 = 802.11n final
    so the topic dual 802.11n version 2 vs version 1 is kind of confusing

  • Airport Gigabit 802.11n and throughput dropouts?

    I have the gigabit ethernet Airport Extreme. It was running wonderfully for some time. Streaming HD movies over 802.11n. Fantastic. But not long ago around 10.4.9 I started having this problem with my MacBook Pro:
    When watching a movie, or copying a file the MBP would disassociate from the ABEX. Any network activity would stop. Until rejoined. Lately I'm in 10.5.2 and the problem still exists. However, clicking on the AirPort menu item will cause it to "re-associate" and things can continue but usually data corruption will happen.
    I have noticed two other things: This happens more when it is set to 802.11n 5 gHz. This is what I originally had. I have no 5 gHz devices around. If I put it on 2.4 gHz it doesn't choke.
    The data amount can be anywhere between 500 KB and 1.8 GB before it stops. As you can guess it's really annoying.
    WPA2 is enabled.
    I am considering a total wipe and re-install from scratch but I think it won't fix the problem.
    Have any of you had similar experiences?

    I have the same problem. Every once in a while I lose connection. When this happens the signal strength icon at the top goes grey. I can reconnect by clicking on it. It scans, finds the AEX, then is reconnected.
    My AEX is running on the 5 GHz band (in answer to one of the questions, I don't think that the 5 GHz band is faster than the 2.4 GHz band, but I could be wrong - I think its just a matter of getting to an uncluttered frequency). All my portable phones in the house are at 2.4 GHz, so before I got the AEX for the 5 GHz my connection would drop out every time the phone was being used. After going to the AEX at 5 GHz the issue went away. After the last upgrade, it seems like I kept having these random dropouts.

  • Adding 802.11b/g AX(s) to multi-Airport Extreme 802.11n roaming network

    First, a thanks to folks like Tesserax and Bob for the great ideas on this forum -- the questions & answers I've read have helped me to date, though I still have a question!
    My home wireless network today consists of:
    One fifth-generation AEBS running in 802.11n only (5 GHz) / 802.11n only (2.4 GHz) mode, on channels 149 (automatic)/11 (automatic) -- provides DHCP services
    One second-generation AEBS running in 802.11n only (5 GHz) mode, on channel 157 (automatic) -- bridge mode
    There is a wired home network with Cat5e and a gigabit switch in the basement.  30 down/5 up DOCSIS 3.0 service through Time Warner Cable, upstream from the fifth-gen AEBS.  The AEBS units are connected in roaming mode via Ethernet.
    Using the Airport Utility on my iOS devices, I'm getting "excellent" (59-65 Mb/s) connectivity when I am near either of the AEBS units.  It is a large brick house built in the 1920s, and while there are now no dead zones in the house, there are areas where I drop down to 10-15 Mb/s per the Airport Utility.  Unfortunately, the two AEBSs are at opposite ends of the house near external walls, one on first floor and one on second -- and the first floor rear AEBS needs to be where it is to serve a breakfast room and sunroom, while the home office AEBS needs to be where I have two Ethernet drops as the cable modem and switch are in the basement.
    Before I added the fifth-gen AEBS, I had the older AEBS and two 802.11b/g Airport Express (AX) devices, also in roaming mode.  I wasn't thrilled with performance, and while performance is much better with the two AEBS model, I'm wondering about the benefits of redeploying my AX devices elsewhere in the house on the roaming network -- on the theory that I should be getting better 802.11g performance from a device close enough to get max speeds than I am from a farther-away 802.11n AEBS.
    However, I am concerned about whether adding back in 802.11b/g devices on 2.4 GHz would restrict the performance of my 802.11n network?  I am assuming that might happen because I have 802.11n running on both frequencies... if I stepped back on the fifth-gen AEBS to 802.11n only (5 GHz) / 802.11b/g  [or a similar setting] on that device, will that help?  Or, am I running the risk of other cross-talk or interference -- or simply of my home network devices being befuddled by multiple access points in a single house?
    Alternatively, I could try to replace my 802.11b/g AX units with 802.11n ones -- howeever, having just bought a new AEBS this week, that would encounter cross-talk with my Spousal Budgetary Compliance Unit (SBCU) and I could end up crashing the entire household....
    Thoughts and ideas appreciated!

    If you use the "b/g" AirPort Express devices in a roaming setup, any computers, iPads, etc in close proximity will connect at maximum "g" wireless speeds.
    It's really not possible to predict the actual results in advance. The increased wireless coverage might tend to compensate for the lower speeds that would naturally occur due to signal drop off if you did not use the AirPort Express devices at all.
    As long as the wireless access points are in a separate room, or separated by 25-30 feet or so from other access points, there should be no confusion that occurs with your laptop trying to connect. It will pick the strongest signal as it moves through the house.
    I think the bottom line here is that this is one of those things where you just will not know unless you try. If the Ethernet cabling is already in place, it should not take long for you to find out how things are working.

  • AirPort Extreme (802.11n) File Transfer Speeds Over Ethernet

    I tested the transfer time for a 1.33GB file from one computer to another under four conditions. Both computers support gigabit Ethernet, and all cabling is Category 6.
    Condition 1: Both computers were directly connected to a pre-gigabit AirPort Extreme Base Station (802.11.n)
    The transfer time was 128 seconds.
    Condition 2: Both computers were directly connected to an 8-port D-Link DGS-2208 gigabit switch, which in turn was connected to a pre-gigabit AirPort Extreme Base Station (802.11.n)
    The transfer time was 72 seconds.
    Condition 3: Both computers were directly connected to an 8-port D-Link DGS-2208 gigabit switch, which in turn was connected to a gigabit AirPort Extreme Base Station (802.11.n)
    The transfer time was 55 seconds.
    Condition 4: Both computers were directly connected to a gigabit AirPort Extreme Base Station (802.11.n)
    The transfer time was 28 seconds.
    Tentative Conclusions: Using a gigabit switch as the parallel connecting device when the router is pre- or non-gigabit is helpful. Using a gigabit switch as the connecting device when the router is also gigabit is hurtful with respect to transfer time.
    I would appreciate any comments.

    I re-ran the tests several times, taking care to "pre-warm" the connections by rebooting the router (and the switch when applicable) and making one false start, stopping the first transfer and then starting the timed transfer.
    The transfer times when no switch was involved were virtually the same as I reported earlier, with the gigabit router significantly outperforming the pre-gigabit AEBS (it was 5.73 times slower). Interestingly, the transfers via the gigabit switch were virtually as fast as a pure transfer using only the gigabit router.
    And there was no difference in the gigabit switch-employed transfer times regardless of whether a pre-gigabit or gigabit router was used. Here is my revised conclusion:
    Using a gigabit switch with Apple's pre-gigabit 802.11n router overcomes the slowness associated with a pre-gigabit router provided that pre-warming techniques are employed.

  • Airport Extreme 802.11n should I WDS or Extend to Bridge ethernet?

    If I buy two Apple Airport Extreme Base Stations (dual-band 802.11n) can I set-up WDS without dropping speeds to G? I've read that if I have any 802.11b/g clients that the entire WDS clocks down to 802.11g. I'm wondering if that is true with the new simultaneous dual band models? Can't I WDS the 802.11n bands and offer 802.11g simultaneously to clients on the other band without bringing the WDS down? Do I want to?
    I would just "extend" but I don't want to have the wireless clients have to go through two "hops" to get out to the internet. As I understand it... all of my wireless clients would go through the relay, then to the main, then out the Internet instead of just connecting straight to the Main. My range doesn't need to be extended as far as coverage goes... one base station would cover my entire house. I'm basically just looking at the other AEBSn to act as a wireless to ethernet bridge to a part of my house where I several ethernet enabled devices out of hardwire range. Do I need the AEBSn or maybe just the new 802.11n AE?

    The simplest, which may also be the best way to do this is use an AEBS as your "main" router and configure an AirPort Express 802.11n to "join" the wireless network and enable the ethernet port. Then connect a simple 5 port switch to the port on the AirPort Express for your ethernet devices.
    Oddly, if you configure a second "remote" AEBS to "join", the ethernet ports +are not+ enabled on the AEBS. The ethernet ports are enabled, if you configure it to "extend a wireless network".

    Not with the external antenna port, but you could use a 802.11n wireless USB adapter instead. One example of this kind of adapter would be the Newer Technology MAX Power 802.11n/g/b Wireless USB 2.0 Stick Adapter & Extension Cradle.

  • Gigabit vs. Fast Ethernet (AEBS 802.11n)

    I have an AEBS 802.11n that I bought back in September 2007. It currently has the 7.2.1 Gigabit Ethernet firmware on it. I want to revert back to older firmware (because of some file transfer problems I have been having) and I see my choices are 7.2 Gigabit Ethernet, 7.1.1 Fast Ethernet, 7.1 Fast Ethernet. I am not sure which one to choose. Is it OK to put Fast Ethernet firmware on the AEBS even if it currently has Gigabit Ethernet firmware? What is the difference between those?

    You should choose "7.2 Gigabit Ethernet".
    The older versions are for the Airport Extreme N Base Station model previous to the one you own, which had only 100Mbps ethernet ports.

  • Reduced transmit rate on new dual band AEBS vs older AEBS 802.11N, gigabit

    Hi,
    I recently upgrade my AEBS from the older 802.11N Gigabit version to the dual band version. The new 2.4ghz part works fine for my iphone, however the 5ghz signal has much slower throughput. previously I could routinely get 270Mbps, now I am lucky to get 160Mbps. the new 5ghz signal is on the same frequency (48), the same multicast rate, and has wide channels selected. When I plugged the older model back in and tested it the throughput was the same 270Mbps so it is not some new interference.
    Anybody else see anything like this? Do the two radios on the AEBS interfere with each other somewhat?
    any ideas? Did I just get a dud unit or is this common (fixable?)?

    Thanks for your reply. My situation is a bit different as I have various wifi units from different locations (some US, some European, some Japanese, etc, etc). As such I need to pick a frequency that works for everything, and on my previous non dual band AEBS channel 48 worked fine. I have tried channel 161 just for curriosity and it made no difference. The transmit rate is listed at between 216Mbps and 27Mpbs but as soon as you attempt to transfer anything it drops significantly. I have also tried to time the difference between my new dual band AEBS and the older one and, regardless of what the connection speed is saying, the new one is definitely slower.
    It isn't unusable by any means, I just thought it was odd and I have never seen it mentioned on any of the reviews of the new dual band units.

    One year (januari 2007) ago I bought the new model of the AEBS 802-11N. I always thought it had 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports. Just now when trying to install the new 7.3.1 firmware, I only can install the Fast Ethernet firmware. It seems that the AEBS only has Fast Ethernet ports instead of Gigabit ports.
    Who can confirm that the AEBS (release jan. 2007) has only Fast Ethernet ports?

    Yes that is true.
    The Gigabit version was released in August 2007.

  • Laserjet 1505 connected to AEB 802.11n via USB keeps timing out after print

    I have a HP Laserjet 1505 connected on my AEB 802.11n via USB and shared on my network, on my network are two macs connected via wifi and 3 WinXP PC connected via wire. I have Bonjour and WinXP laserjet drivers installed on all Win PC. Everytime I print from any of the computers, it will print the first time, but when I try printing again from any of the machines, the macs and winxp pc's cannot detect the printer. When I go to airport utility, the printer cannot be detected anymore. I have to hard reset the AEB for it to detect the laserjet printer again. But the same thing happens again after I print out another document. Has anybody encountered this kind of problem. Can anyone help me resolve this?

    Here is what I got from HP support :
    The driver for the Laserjet P1006 is not available yet for Os 10.5...we are hoping it will be release in the next week or so...please click on the link below to sign up for an email update as soon as it is available..As a workaround, some people have been able to use the 10.4 driver from the cd, but this is not guaranteed to work in all applications therefore the only solution is to wait and install the 10.5 driver.
    So we wait.

  • Why doesn't the AEBS 802.11n support NTFS?

    I am wondering why users need to go through hoops to make the $200 AEBS 802.11n recognize NTFS formatted disks. Is it really that complicated for Apple engineers to add this support? Is there any way to reach Apple tech and request this? Or is asking for NTFS support utterly ludicrous and fundamentally not feasible. If it is futile to hope for Apple to add support for NTFS to the AEBS 802.11n, then how does one go about returning - who to contact to return and get the money refunded.

  • Use USB-connected hardidsk as timemachine backup using AEBS 802.11n

    Hello
    I got this external hard disk MyBook 1TB. When it is connected to my Macbook Pro directly via USB or firewire, I can configure it as backup disk for timemachine.
    Hwever if I connect this same hard-disk to the AEBS 802.11n via USB I cannot see it in the time machin utility.
    I thought this would be an alternative to the timecapsule. (as i was told it is possible).
    Any hints?

    Time Machine via Airdisk: Possible? Yes. Apple supported? No.
    Time Machine backups to AirDisks (e.g. USB HDD attached to Extreme 802.11n) is unsupported, but has been successful by some. As well, once you decide to move any old TM backups (HDD connected directly to the Mac) to an AirDisk, you cannot continue backing up to your previous TM backup. The format it saves to vs. a local HDD is different. The folder structure you see becomes a sparsebundle/disk image via the AirDisk.

  • AEBS 802.11n, TC and APXn with 7.3.1 is very flaky indeed - cant connect -

    HI Guys I think many of you on these forums have posted because you are having joyless experiences with the new APX 802.11n, the AEBSn and the TC not able to be managed via the AIRPORT UTILITY.app v5.3.2 with firmware 7.3.1 in the former devices. After a search there's many of these posts with people with the same issues.
    I have these devices in my place so I have had lost of experience configuring these over the years:
    1 x 802.11n AEBS, 1 x TC, 1 xUFO white AEBS, 2 x APXg's and lastly the problematic 1 x APX802.11n (one subnet and 2 x networks 2.4Ghz and 5 Ghz)
    I am at my wits ends trying to get the new APXn regularly responding to the AP utility.app (error reading configuration).
    I have tried most of the remedies on these forums but they do not consistently solve the problems of the APX not responding to the AP utility.None of these have consistently worked:
    • trying to factory reset it using the POWER ON+RESET and waiting for the amber flashes then green - butt this procedure NEVER WORKS to factory reset!
    • using the reset button in any form (it doesn't do anything)
    • connection through ethernet (sometimes works ).
    • takes long to power up (than the older 802.11g)
    • rest APXn back to factory defaults through the AP utility then ...
    • downloaded 7.3 firmware - worse and wont work
    • lastly I found that RESET+POWER ON then wait for 20 secs as as it powers up DEPRESS the RESET again and then it becomes readable.
    Additionally, I have been unsuccessful in getting PORT FORWARDINg to work at all for the AEBS 802.11n with and without the TC in the mix. I had this working for several years with the White UFO AEBS ... It beats me.
    I think the firmware is very very flaky and i have no resolutions for these recent problems.
    Hope for a fix soon.

    Hi Guys
    REgarding the APXn's (802.11N Airport express) inability to consistently be seen by the Airport Utility.
    this just worked finally for me now and have tested this 7 times and all seems ok now..
    Simply: when APXN in list, save configs, reset to factordeafuts, downgrade to 7.3, upgrade to 7.3 and reinstate .configs.
    UPdate: a probable work instruction that seems to consistently work.
    Here is the work instruction i used.
    (1) turn off all other WIFI base stations where you are that you can. (important I believe)
    (2) turn off airport in your mac
    (3) connect troublesome APXN to mac via ETHERNET cable. Set DHCP on your mac or some address in IPV4
    (4) power off and on the APXn  (yes again )
    (5) whilst it is powering up, use a pen of toothpick to RESET the APXn again (i think this causes something to move around inside the magic-ware)
    (6) the light will flash amber (no network to connect to)
    (7) launch /utilities/airport utility.app
    (8) the one and only APXn appears in the list
    (8.5) optional: (cross fingers and legs :))
    (9) when profile comes back, use FILE/SAVE a COPY AS to the ~/desktop to save the complete profiles and settings of what you have in there currently.
    (10) select the one and only APXn and perform a airport utility.app/base station/ RESET TO FACTORY DEFAULTS - and wait for 30 secs and then it will restart
    (11) when complete, quit and relaunch the /utilities/airport utility.app
    (12) the APXN will be as when you bought it (pristine and no stuff in it from you)
    (13) connect your mac back to internet via ethernet if possible. (avoid the wireless just to be sure but at this stage you could reinstate all your exiting wireless infrastructure)
    (14) select the one and only APXn AGAIN and perform a airport utility/base station/ UPLOAD FIRMWARE and select version 7.3 (back level) . THe firmware will load into APXn 0%-100% guage and then it will restart.
    (15) when complete, quit and relaunch the /utilities/airport utility.app and it will warn that one of the basestations (the only on the list - the APXN) has later FIRMWARE available for it. [This is 7.3.1].
    (16) reply OK to UPLOAD NEW 7.3.1 firmware. (yes yes I realise ths sounds silly but it works ok ) 7.3.1 Firmware will up load into the APXN as above and restart will take place.. so say 120 seconds.
    (17) quit and relaunch the /utilities/airport utility.app. THE APXN will appear as before as now with 7.3.1.
    (18) just to make sure, (we're not quite finished), remove the ETHERNET cable. If not already done form previous optional step, ENABLE the AIRPORT (WIFI) on your mac.
    (19) power OFF then power ON the APXn.. wait for the usual 70 secs..
    (20) Again, to be sure, QUIT and RESTART the /utilities/airport utility.app, the APX as factory default with amber icon will appear in the list [along wit the rest of your apple airport base stations).
    (21) Select it in the list fo MANUAL and the configuration will be read quickly.
    (22) do this (steps 18-21) 3 or 4 times to see that it is consistent. (I this it 7 before posting this).
    last step...
    • select the APXN (default settings) and IMPORT the save configuration file (~/desktop/nnn.baseconfig) (all it) from the ~/desktop. Ignore any errors (untick them), add a password for the base station and UPDATE!
    • wait for the usual 70 secs.
    • without quitting the /utilities/airport utility.app, the UPDATED APXN with your configuration will be in the list.
    NOw try and selectit for manual and it should respond in time without timing out.
    Test by powering off and removing from wall socket and moving around too to make sure you can SEE it in the /utilities/airport utility.app and select it for MANUAL CONFIGURATION.
    After many days of frustration on weekend and over night, this appears to have worked ok for me.
    (now to work out the AEBSn port forwarding issue - it wont work).
