After Effects 8-bit depth question

Hey everyone, this is something i've just been wondering about. Correct me if i'm wrong but its my understanding that with 10-bit depth footage or higher After effects crunches it to 8-bit after the render/export. If that's the case then what is the actual point of capturing at higher bit depths in the first place if we can't maintain them when it comes down to final delivery?
Thanks very much for any help.

You're only partly wrong. If you keep the project 8bit then you're right, but that's a terrible workflow. Where most folks foul up is in the rendering.
After Effects offers 8bit, 16bit, and 32bit processing options. If you render a 32bit project to an 8 bit codec, you get 8bits, but if you render a 32bit project to a 10bit codec (Black Magic, ProRez, or several other flavors of higher bit depth codecs) you get a 10bit product. You can also render to 16 or 32 bit image sequences.
All of these settings are available in the Adobe Media Encoder or through the Output Module settings in the Render Cue. Since I work primarily on a Mac all of my production renders are to ProRez 422 or 444 (10bit) unless I'm freelancing at a facility that works with another capture card. Most places I work use Black Magic cards so we render to the Black Magic 10 bit codec.
My standard workflow is to start with an 8bit project, set up the project and render motion and compositing tests, then switch to a 32bit project settings, do the color correction, then render to a production codec that is at least 10bit.
BTW, don't use the export feature in AE for any kind of delivery. Export's only professionally usable export is Flash Professional XFL if you need animated motion or text in a flash project or Premiere Pro Project if you want to use Premiere to edit your AE project.
I hope this helps.

  • Maximum audio sample rate and bit depth question

Anyone worked out what the maximum sample rates and bit depths AppleTV can output are?
I'm digitising some old LPs and while I suspect I can get away with 48kHz sample rate and 16 bit depth, I'm not sure about 96kHz sample rate or 24bit resolution.
If I import recordings as AIFFs or WAVs to iTunes it shows the recording parameters in iTunes, but my old Yamaha processor which accepts PCM doesn't show the source data values, though I know it can handle 96kHz 24bit from DVD audio.
It takes no more time recording at any available sample rates or bit depths, so I might as well maximise an album's recording quality for archiving to DVD/posterity as I only want to do each LP once!
If AppleTV downsamples however there wouldn't be much point streaming higher rates.
I wonder how many people out there stream uncompressed audio to AppleTV? With external drives which will hold several hundred uncompressed CD albums is there any good reason not to these days when you are playing back via your hi-fi? (I confess most of my music is in MP3 format just because i haven't got round to ripping again uncompressed for AppleTV).
No doubt there'll be a deluge of comments saying that recording LPs at high quality settings is a waste of time, but some of us still prefer the sound of vinyl over CD...

I guess the answer to this question relies on someone having an external digital amp/decoder/processor that can display the source sample rate and bit depth during playback, together with some suitable 'demo' files.

  • Bit depth question

    Hello,
My audio device can sample up to 24-bit. When I create a 32-bit file in Audition 2.0 and record material using the audio device, Audition tells me the file is 32-bit, and it is indeed twice the size of an equivalent 16-bit file. But is it really a 32-bit file, and could there be any issues with the file? It seems fine in every way.
    Thank you.

No audio hardware actually samples at greater than 24-bit, because there's absolutely no point - even 24-bit depth isn't actually usable in full; a system like this could in theory digitise a noise floor way lower than can be physically achieved by any mic and preamp system available - you'd need at least liquid nitrogen cooling of all the components before you even started to look at the rest of the problems!
So why does Audition record in 32-bit? Well, 32-bit Floating Point digitising is a bit different. The actual 24-bit signal is recorded quite faithfully (although not quite in the form of an integer signal) and the other 8 bits are essentially left as zeros during recording. What they actually are is scaling bits. And this comes in seriously useful when processing. What it means is that your original signal can be scaled up and down without loss. In an integer engine, if you decided to throw away 30dB of a signal, saved the result and reopened the file and amplified it again, you'd find that your 24-bit signal was effectively 19-bit. In Audition, if you did exactly the same thing with a 32-bit Floating Point signal, you wouldn't lose any bit depth at all. No it's not magic - it's just the effect of storing the original data in a form that inherenently doesn't get modified when an amplitude change is asked for - it's only the scaling system that does, and this doesn't contain audio data.
So yes it's a real 32-bit signal - but not all of those 32 bits are used until you do some processing.

  • Exporting to OMF for audio and After effect + delay in performance question

    Hello
    I have two questions.
First I have a problem with performance of FCP 5 I'm using a 500 GB firewire 800 external drive (not . Every time I hit the play button there is a delay of 2 seconds before playing my sequence I'm not sure why this is happening, I have a very basic sequence with one layer.
Second question - I'm trying to make FCP popular in my country but it is very hard since we work with OMF both in Protools and in After Effects. In Avid we exported media embedded OMF and also with audio. I know that there is an option to export OMF with audio but Protools has a hard time opening it. As for Video there is no choice, what can we do?
    Thank you

  • Final cut pro millions of colours + bit depth question

    Hello
I am working in final cut pro 7 and I wanted to know what is the maximum bit depth I can export using the Prores codec? All I see in compression settings for rendering my timeline when wanting to render with Prores 4444 is the option for 'millions of colors' and 'millions of colors +' I was under the impression that millions of colors refered to 8 bit... does the alpha channel mean I can get 10 bit? can the alpha channel hold 2 more bits per channel or something? Or is there no way I can export a 10bit file using the Prores codec within fcp7..? is it all just 8bit. -and when I select 422HQ there is no advanced options for millions of colors..what does this mean? is the only way to get 10bit out of fcp7 to render with the 10bit uncompressed codec? and if so can I render the timeline in prores while im working with it then delete all the renders and change the render codec to 10bit uncompressed, will this now be properly giving me 10bit from the original 4444 12 bit files i imported in the beginning..?
    Any help is much appreciated

ProRes is 10-bit. Every ProRes codec is 10-bit...LT, 422, HQ.  Not one of them is 8-bit.  Except for ProRes 444...that's 12 bit.

  • After Effects - Premiere Pro workflow question...

    Hi,
I have a basic question about workflow between AE and PP.
I'm editing an acting reel for a client which deals with a lot of different footage and bits and pieces here and there.
We already converted all the footage to DV-AVI - tweaking, color correction and effects are done in AE.
Here's the question that I'm thinking about:
Should I work on all my footage in AE first and then import it into PP for editing OR should I edit everything the way I wanna have it and then import it into AE for the tweaking.
Advantages for both options that come to my (newbie) mind:
    AE first then PP
    1. Final editing is done in PP which gives me flexibility if I wanna change things later editing wise
    2. PP exporting options are huge - don't know if AE can compare to that
    3. could import to PP via Dynamic link which saves me the hassle of exporting each little clip from AE to a lossless format - as mentioned we have lot's of different footage and little bits and pieces here and there
    PP first the AE
    1. if u apply a lot of effects, Dynamic link is a pain to scrub through the footage in PP because it takes so much time to render through the link - with exporting a final edited version from PP and then importing into AE would make things go a little bit smoother
    2. I would have more flexiblity if I wanna change any effects in AE
    What would u suggest ?
Thanx for your help in advance !!
    Mike

    Mylenium,
    thanx again for your input.
Reading your posts - and PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong - it seems like the workflow would be:
    1. PP for rough cut, then
    2. AE for tweaking
    3. back to PP for the final cut, export etc., since AE does not have the editing tools needed (transitions etc.)
But, as I did some testing the last two hours it is almost impossible getting PP projects into AE.
I read the manual and tried the following:
    a. importing a PP project file into AE via the Import --> File dialog.
I specified only one PP sequence to be imported - it did import all of the footage of the PP project (including the footage that is not needed) and it imported 3 (not one) sequences, including the one I specified.
Besides that, the sequence is unusable - the in & out points of the footage are totally wrong - the transition I applied (dip-to-black) was unavailable.
I re-tried it without transitions but the in & out points of the footage are absolutely wrong.
The sequence deals with two different clips - both used 3 times in the sequence - and the first clip is okay in AE, but the second clip always (at all three points) starts from the start of the original footage.
    b. I tried to copy & paste footage from the PP timeline to the AE timeline - which did not work.
As described in the manual, I did save that AE project and I did select the timeline in AE. I tried it through Edit --> Paste (which was unavailable), as well as through Ctrl+V. Did not work.
It seems to me like Dynamic Link is a One-Way-Street, it does work from AE to PP but not the other way around, at least not usable.
I had a thread about this a couple of weeks ago and other users experienced the same results.
I'm thinking about doing the rough cut in AE, the limited editing tools from AE should be okay...

  • Premiere CS3 vs After Effect CS3 !

Ok friends hopping someone gives a detailed or a brief  feedback on this !
I used to use Sony Vegas, but later on i discovered that Adobe Premiere CS3 was much better software, so i started to use Premiere CS3 few month ago and so far have been very very happy with the Chroma , garbage remover and few more ...
i also installed Adobe After Effect CS3, but my question for you is how do you compare AE with Premiere ! I noticed plug in manufactures mostly make plug ins for AE, at the same time there are many plug ins for Premiere as well , but not as many as i can find for AE.
for example RedGiant makes plug ins for AE and they also have 60% for Premiere ..
please give me your brief or detailed idea about why would you use AE or why would you use Premiere !
So far i have using Premiere for evertyhing (Adding fx and etc)

As Shooterz says, "Have a play" - meaning, you are going to have to use each program to see for yourself how they differ.
So, for example, do this tutorial for premiere (or any other):
    http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/premiere/articles/preppictinpict.html
And do this for After Effects.
    http://www.toolfarm.com/tutorials/gleam1.html
I've picked one for each that shows its most relevant strengths - video for Premiere and motion graphics for AE.

  • Modifiying an swf layer with After Effect

    Greetings,
I'm very new to after effects and have a question regarding an exsisting  project that has a swf layer.
We want to increase the time play from 6 second to 48 seconds. No problem with that.. However within the
animation there is a swf that plays for six seconds. I want to keep the last frame up for the next 42 seconds.
(It's a logo). How would I do that without messing up the 6 second animation i.e. change it's duration .
In flash I would simply adda timer or extend the klast key frame  way out.
I don't have the original FLA file, just the After Effects project.
    Hope I'm clear.
    thanks

  • Adobe After Effects Disk Cache folder is massive!!!

Hi. My mac computer is starting to get out of free space so I use omnidisk to do some cleaning on my computer and I notice that there a folder in user/library/preferences/adobe/after effect/11.0/Adobe After Effects Disk Cache - user's MacBook Pro.noindex/.... that has lots of different folders, named with numbers, that has hundreds if not thousands of files that goes from 100kb up to 9mb! The total space taken by these files are 49gb!!!
I did some fast research in here: http://helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/using/memory-storage.html#caches_ram_cache_disk_cache _and_media_cache   and it says that after effects store some render data in the computer (i think )... but I'm really not going to open any of the old after effects files so my question is... can i delete that folder??? or is it vital for the program?
By the way my computer has 750gb and 16gb of ram sooo yeah any help will be appreciated...

Welcome to disk cache. You can set the disk cache size in the preferences. On my laptop I keep it at 6GB.  If you are using it you should be emptying it on a regular basis.

  • Spinning Objects In After Effects

Hi all, at this flash example here http://www.flashden.net/item/strongpagestrong-flip-with-motion-blur/3386, the page spins I spoke to the guy who created and he said he created the whole spinning effect in After Effects and it was really easy, I have used After Effects a bit but thought maybe there was a Filter or something which can be applied to create this effect... If anyone has any idea would be greatly appreciated!

It's just a Y-axis rotation with Motion Blur enabled. No fancy plugins required.

  • After Effects is missing from the Creative Cloud Desktop application

It took over 10min for me to get to this place just to ask a question...REALLY ADOBE, You can't make it easier for people to get help with your products? I'm into my 50th min trying to install a trial version of After effects on a PC. After updating and creating my Adobe Cloud account, After Effects is no where to be found. I'm really frustrated and may switch back to Final Cut Pro! Someone wanna tell me how to install After Effects. Ridiculous!

If After Effects does not show up in the Creative Cloud app then your system does not meet the System requirements | After Effects - Adobe. This question has been ask about two or three times a month since the Creative Cloud was announced. You can't blame Adobe that you didn't read the system requirements before signing up for Creative Cloud. Other apps may be compatible and you may be able to use CS6 by filtering the available apps like so:

  • Help with After Effects

I just upgraded to PP CS4 to CS5 Premium with After Effects and Photoshop.  I'm trying hard to figure things out but I'm unfamiliar with these programs and have no idea where to begin to learn.  I've tried watching various tutorials, but they skip over basics, and unfortunately, that's what I need.  I
Can anyone recommend a really good book or video or something to get me started?  I know there's so much to learn and I'm so eager to learn it all.  However, I don't even know how to get the footage from CS5 to After Effects.
One more question - I'm working on a video right now in CS5. The girl in the video has rosacea and I want to take the red out of her face.  Is this possible in After Effects?  If so, can someone please tell me how to go about doing it - or suggest a tutorial that deals with such an issue?
    Thank you so much,

    > Do you have any idea which tool in after effects I would use, and how,
to remove color from an area on a video and blend it with the
surrounding area.  Or if anyone knows of a tutorial explaining that
process I would so appreciate it.
You should ask your After Effects questions on the After Effects forum:

Here are two video tutorials that show different ways to selectively apply an effect to a specific area:

  • After Effects 6.5pro + G5 1.8GHz single メモリの認識について

    分かる方がいたらぜひ教えて下さい。
    現在、After Effects 6.5proを PowerMacG5 1.8GHz single(M9555J/A)OS10.3.9で使用しております。

How can I install after effects on 32 bit operating system?
I cant even find it in creative cloud.
I want to make  a intro but it dossent allow me to even find/ istall it.
I hope some one will help me by anwsering my question.
    Than you for time.

If your system does not meet the minimum system requirements you have to go back to a version that does. Try the direct download links you'll find here.. CS5 comes bundled with CS4 for AE which is the last  version to run on a 32 bit system.

  • Maximum Bit Depth /Maximum Render Quality  Questions

    Maximum Bit Depth
If my project contains high-bit-depth assets generated by high-definition camcorders, I was told to select Maximum Bit Depth because Adobe Premiere Pro uses all the color information in these assets when processing effects or generating preview files. I'm capturing HDV using the Matrox RTX-2 Hardware in Matrox AVI format.
When I finally export my project using Adobe Media Encoder CS4, will selecting Maximum Bit Depth provide better color resolution once I post to Blu-ray format?
    Maximum Render Quality
I was told that by using Maximum Render Quality, I maintain sharp detail when scaling from large formats to smaller formats, or from high-definition to standard-definition formats as well as maximizes the quality of motion in rendered clips and sequences. It also renders moving assets more sharply. It's my understanding that at maximum quality, rendering takes more time, and uses more RAM than at the default normal quality. I'm running Vista 64 Bit with 8 GIGs of RAM so I'm hoping to take advantage of this feature.
Will this also help to improve better resolution when I finally export my project using Adobe Media Encoder CS4 and post to Blu-ray format?
Does it look like I have the specs to handle Maximum Bit Depth and Maximum Render Quality when creating a new HDV project with the support of the Matrox RTX 2 Hardware capturing in Matrox AVI format? See Below Specs.

Just some details that i find useful on maximum render depth
You really need it even with 8bit source files, when using heavy grading/multiple curves/vignettes. If after grading you see banding, go to sequence > sequence settings from the top menu and check "maximum bit depth (ignore the performance popup), then check again your preview (it will change in a second) to see if banding is still present in 32bit mode. If no banding, you must check it when exporting, if  banding is still there, change your grading, then uncheck it to continue with editing.
Unfortunately Maximum bit depth exporting is extremely time-consuming, but can really SAVE YOUR DAY when facing artifacts after heavy grading, by completely or almost completely eliminating banding and other unwanted color distortions.
Use it only for either small previews or the really final output.
    Best Regards.
