hello,
after update to OS X 10.7.5 on my Mac Pro (2009) USB ports don't work at all after wake up from sleep mode; with 10.7.4 there was (nearly) any problem.
the used ports appear to be "killed"; the unused USB ports seem to work, but the Mac works in slow-motion.
The only "solution" is to restart my Mac.
- SMC-reset, PRAM-reset or repairing user rights had no positive effect; what is the solution - a bug-fix-update???

I have a mac mini (A1283) with OS 10.7.4. Upon upgrading to 10.7.5 it did not start up again. Instead, the light was on and the hard drive did not start up. The light on the connected USB mouse was not lit.
My solution:
Cold start with Command-v pressed.
This should start Verbose mode (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492 ).
What happened on my mac mini was that the grey startup screen with the Apple logo appeared for a long while before the login screen came.
Maybe Cmd-v set open firmware params and fixed some corruption.
Anyway: my mac mini works again.

  • USB ports don't work after resuming from standby with Windows 8 on X230 tablet

I have just done a clean install of Windows 8 on my X230 tablet.  Before installing Windows 8 I installed the most recent BIOS for this machine (version 2.50).  After installing Windows 8 I installed System Update from the Lenovo Website and downloaded all the recommended drivers and other files.  I've also installed all the latest Windows 8 updates.
Here are the symptoms of my problem: After resuming from standby/sleep mode, my USB ports do not work.  My computer has two USB 3.0 ports and one USB 2.0 ports.  All exhibit the same behavior.  After resuming from standby mode I have tried inserting both my mouse and a USB thumbdrive, but neither are recognized.  After restarting Windows, the USB ports work again... until I resume from standby mode again.
I hope there is a solution to this issue.  It is very frustrating.

Thanks for the suggestion about tweaking the "Allow this computer to turn off this device" feature.  I un-checked that box for every entry I could find under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" in the Devide Manager.  Unfortunately, the same symptoms of my problem persisted.
I went back and looked at the README file associated with the BIOS 2.50 download on Lenvo's support site.  At the bottom of the file it gives a "Summary of Changes".  Under version 2.03 of the BIOS (the version just before version 2.50), it says:
    - (Fix) Fixed an issue where USB device might not detected when system resume from sleep mode.
This indicates that Lenovo support was already aware of such issues.  The problem was intended to be fixed in version 2.03 of the BIOS.  However, the issue persists on my machine, even with the latest BIOS.
Hopefully someone from Lenovo can comment here.

  • USB Ports don't work after sleep mode on Windows 7 Pro 64 bit

I have been using my laptop for about a month without a problem, but over the last week or two I have had a problem where I lose access to all of my USB ports when resuming from sleep mode. If I go into hybernate or restart the computer, the ports
miraculously return. The techs at the manufacturer can't figure it out and wanted me to do a full system restore, which is a little too drastic a solution! The only real thing I can connect it to, is I had to use Virtual PC (XP) around the time this
    started.

    Hi Greg,
Microsoft has been fixed this problem, but it is not successful with all PC/Notebook manufacturers. So, the OEM developers itself started giving patch for this issue. I have seen the patch upto Windows Vista version. Lenovo, HP, Dell and other people
are providing this patch. Sony is providing this patch for some selective models. Go to sony support, enter or auto detect your model and check for the update. With Windows 7 SP1 your USB drives should work properly.
Anyway, check the below sony support link to understand how to wake up a USB drive after sleep in Vista, Do the equivalent modification in your Windows 7 PC registry. It will work for you.
    http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=http--supportmicrosoftcom-kb-928631&sliceId=&docTypeID=DT_MICROSOFTKB_1_1&dialogID=268806033&stateId=1%200%20268804250
Hope this will work for you.

Well, the above two links have the problem similar to mine but not exactly. In first one there is a problem with network manager - that it is unable to restart after coming from sleep mode while that is not a problem in my case and I tried all the solutions provided in the second link, but didn't work.
What I figured is when I execute '#pm-suspend' and then close the lid. Then, after I open the lid I wireless works fine. 'pm-suspend' is not invoked if I close the lid. So I needed to invoke the above command when an acpi event is generated when I close the lid. So here is what I added in the /etc/acpi/handler.sh file
    button/lid)
         case "$3" in
               close)
                   (sudo /usr/sbin/pm-suspend)  #added
               open)
This works fine for now. Still, I don't know why this solution works - Why executing pm-suspend solves my problem?

  • Since upgrading to Lion 10.7.3 my USB ports don't work for anything. Any ideas?

I have been a long-term (nearly 25 years) Apple User, so am reasonably familiar with the system. I upgraded about 1 week ago with an automatic update to Lion and since then I have had massive problems using the USB ports on my Mac Pro (which is from 2009). At first this affected every USB port and I couldn't use my keyboard or mouse, but since restarting a couple of times, and repeatedly inserting and removing them into the various rear ports, I can use these plugged in via monitor cable.
However, the USB ports for other devices are extremely problematic and frustrating as nothing seems to work consistently on them. This affects all devices that I usually access (and which all worked seamlessly before upgrade), including my iPhone (which will power up but not be recognized when plugged into any front or rear port), external drives, cameras, and my printer. However, for the printer only (a Brother MFC 9840) it will work some times if I restart the computer, but not others. I have tried rebooting, switching ports, using other cables, changing power cords. I have read multiple threads on USB issues with Lion for a solution including those to do with printers (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3301218?start=0&tstart=0), those to do with external drives (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3510032?start=30&tstart=0), and even those to to with modems (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3164614?start=0&tstart=0). Despite this, I note that there appear to be no consistent solutions reported and that in other support threads including reseting PRAM. I do see many more problems than I would have expected.
I don't know if this is related, but after the upgrade I also had problems with Outlook not working, but for some reason that seemed to stop after a couple of days. Just in case I also checked to see if I was affected by the malware program (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3856206?tstart=30), but thankfully I am not.
I am sure this has to do with the upgrade to Lion 10.7.3, and have been expecting something from Apple to address these issues, but nothing so far. I am completely lost for solutions, and any help gratefully received.
Slightly unrelated, but again speaking to a possible change in culture in Apple that has seen upgrades cause more problems than they solve, I am also affected by the change from MobileMe to iCloud and the loss of push e-mail. For those not aware, this has been an issue for more than 6 months, and on the discussion there are now 35 pages of comments, and no solution in sight (https://discussions.apple.com/message/18050375?ac_cid=142432#18050375).

Generally speaking, a full recharge and reboot after the recharge will solve the issue with the ports.  Many ports will also start to fail if you leave devices hooked up to them when the machine is asleep.  Unfortunately, many non-Apple devices don't understand the low power mode ports go into after Energy Saver is woken up, and only a reboot solves that problem.

  • Mac Pro 2008 USB port problems - persistent

    Hello all,
    I have a 2008 Mac Pro - standard config : 2.8Ghz 2Go Ram ATI 2600.
At the outset I did a clean install onto a 1To Seagate drive.
From day 1, and before adding any third party applications, the aluminium keyboard would suddenly stop working. If I changed this for my old G5 plastic keyboard, I had no problem. The aluminium keyboard would work again sometimes if I changed USB port, sometimes only after rebooting.
This problem occurred randomly, a few, or many times a day.
Apple, after going thru' a number of tests with me over the phone, finally sent me a new keyboard (after having sent 2 white plastic models). This changed nothing. I then had a problem with the white plastic keyboard and one day, with a USB drive linked to a USB port I got the error message of having disconnected the disk without having ejected it first. That told me that the problem was not with the keyboard but with the USB ports (power to them?).
I did a clean install (with erase disk 1 pass) under 10.1.5 - the problem didn't go.
I then did a clean install again 10.1.5 followed immediately by upgrade 10.5.2 and the graphics upgrade. I installed no third party apps for 2 days. I had no problems. I installed some apps. No problems for 3 days. I ran all this time on a plastic keyboard. Today I plugged in the aluminium keyboard. No problems for 8 hours and suddenly tonight everythings starts over again.
I've had to do 4 reboots in the last hour. I'm back on the plastic keyboard. But if I lose that like last time I'm pretty convinced that this is a hardware issue.
Curiously I have not seen this problem cited in any forums on the Apple boards and other Mac
    sites.
    Any ideas ?
I wan't this machine changed. It's my work tool and I can't afford to lose so much time…nor to get so frustrated.

P.S. My first Mac was a MAC SE !!

I think there is a problem with the usb ports on the MacPro which I also think is causing some of the bluetooth problems that are being reported around. Here's why.
I have a "base" new MacPro (2xQuad 2.8, 320G drive, etc.). After getting the unit going with the standard usb keyboard and mouse I then paired my Apple wireless keyboard and mighty mouse. All worked fine. Then the problems started. I have security set that requires a log in when booting, however after restarting, or rebooting, the MacPro the wireless keyboard and mouse were no longer recognized and I was stuck at the login screen. If I then connected my original Mac usb keyboard it would not work. The ONLY way I can get the usb keyboard to work is by having it connected when I reboot/restart. Calling Apple support was...well let's just say less than useless. So I have been doing a lot of experimenting on my own. I have finally found out that if I have nothing at all connected to any of the usb ports then the MacPro will recognize my wireless keyboard and mouse (although it does take some time to recognize it). If I connect my usb devices again and reboot...back to the same situation. No connection to my bluetooth devices and my usb keyboard will not work (unless I again reboot with it already attached). Now before you say it's my other usb devices let me tell you what I have....just a Canon printer and a Western Digital USB drive that I use for Time Machine. Both of these units have been working fine for over a year and work absolutely fine when connected to my Mac Book Pro.
I believe the bluetooth device inside is connected to the usb bus internally which is why I think the usb bus is the "root" of the problem. When certain usb devices (and heck it my be almost any usb device) are attached then the usb internal hardware screws up, which kills the bluetooth connection. I believe that this problem may be borderline (not sure if its power, timing, etc.) which is why we see so many issues that are similar, but hard to pin down.
I also believe that Leopard exacerbates this problem (but not sure yet and way too long to detail now....I'm babbling enough).
Right now the only way I can get my machine to work properly is to disconnect my printer and drive, boot the machine and then reconnect them after I have logged in. That sequence seems to work.
I know that isn't any kind of an answer, but you are certainly not the only one and I think this is just another symptom of a larger Apple USB issue. I'm continuing to investigate.
    Good luck all,
    rd

  • DHCP loses ip address after wake up from sleep mode.

My wife and I got a WRT54G router to replace the ethernet hub we had been using in order to get better reception for our voip phone system. We connect to the web using a 2-Wire DSL modem which connects to the router. From there we use ethernet to connect our computers to the router. I am running a G4 iMac flatscreen and she just got a new Macbook Pro. I had a very difficult time configuring my computer for the router, calling Kalcutta numerous times, but finally got on the web. However, after I or my wife wake up our computers from the sleep mode, we find the infamous 169 xxx xxx xx ip address indicating that we cannot connect to the web unless we shut down the modem and the router and then restart them. This is getting to be a pain. Anyone out there got a clue?

Although, you do not state specifically, when shutting down the modem and the router, are you also unplugging them from the AC power, shutting down the computers and waiting at least 60 seconds? Then you restart in the order of modem, router and then computer waiting for each to fully sync up before turning on the next device, yes?
I had the 169 problem with another brand router and solved it by resetting the router to factory defaults, then re-setup for my use. See the Linksys DSL Setup for Mac and specifically the Note in Step 6.

It appears it is a specific update. You could try 2 things:
    1) Verify and install the latest device drivers for your PC from the manufacture's support web site:
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=migr-70443
    2) Install or uninstall one update at a time to narrow it down to specific update (KB number). If you find the offending update check / search the internet for the specific Microsoft KB article and what is intended to fix. It is possible there
is a newer update that supersedes it.

    Hello.
One month ago starting my iMac Mid 2010 occasionally goes to kernel panic. I have Mac OS 10.7.5 version installed.
Is there any tool to debug what is wrong. Windows OS has WinDebuger to detaily look inside to core dump and analyze it and in my experience almost allways is possible to detect root of problem.
First of all i was try HW diagnostic from DVD, succesfully passed. Then I run Permission Repair procedure, there were many folders and files with different ACL as system expected.

  • Ibook won't wake up or crashes after waking from sleep mode

I have now had this problem for the last year with my new ibook g4 and I can confirm that the problem is present at OS X version 10.3.0 - 10.3.9 and 10.4.0-10.4.5 . I'd manage to solve it but once in a while it shows up again and i have to solve it all over again. Apple doesn't seem to care although it makes your iBook totally unusable if you can't put it to sleep mode, because of the fact that you can't leave your iBook ON while the lid is closed. Ok as I said I have this problem once in a while but I allways manages to solve it, here are my observations:
Leting the computer go into sleep mode by itself (not by closing the lid) will not result in a crash.
Before a crash the following allways occour:
    1) The system gets highly unstable. Programs (mostly safari, mail and itunes) will crash without warning. The mouse reacts very slowly and lags behind. The mouse lag is a shure indication that the system will crash during the next seconds or minuts.
    2) While set to automaticly connect to favorite network, the airport won't connect imidiatly, but it will take a few seconds more than usual before it connects.
    3) The system sometimes crashes before it can activate the backlight resulting in the situation where people think that the system can't wake up from sleep mode and won't react.
Only forcing the computer to sleep mode can cause this failure (by pressing "sleep mode" or by closing the lid).
What i did to rule out some sources resulting in this error:
    1) Something like this problem can happen when having a bad memory socket or bad memory, so I'd ran Apples Hardware test and memtest OSX, but no failure was indicated.
    2) Ran the usual repair of disk permissions (like 10^6 times ), without any changes.
    3) Tried to reset the PMU (Power managing unit), without any changes.
    4) Also tried to make a clean installation with panther 10.3 and tiger 10.4, without changes. Before installing anything (no prgrams or updates) the system still crashes. Even after updating to. 10.3.9 and 10.4.5 the problem is still present
    The solution:
Well I found out that the problem has to do with to power options. That would normally mean that reseting the PMU would help, but as I already said this didn't change anything. Apparently the system is not able to wake up the Harddisk from sleep mode, and that's basicly the problem. I don't understand why it doesn't crash when going to sleep mode all by itself, but aparently there's something diffrent by forcing the system to sleep mode. Fourthermore it's not so "happy" to change those settings for the harddisk (I will explain later).
    Solution:
    1) Basicly just UNCHECK the option "Set harddisk to sleep mode whenever it's possible" inside powermanagment. And set "let the computer go to sleep after" to "Never" , do this for Battery and AC Power settings.
    2) And put CPU usage to "Automatic", do this for Battery and AC Power settings
    3) Restart the ibook. When it plays it's startup sound reset PVRAM by holding the following keys down before the backlight turns ON: OptionCommand+PR , when you hear the startup sound again release the buttons and start OSX normally.
Now as I said this problems comes once in a while and that has to do with the fact that repairing my disk permissions can change/reset the above changes. Even if it isn't beeing displayed graphicly repairing the disk permission have reseted those changes, resulting in the fact that the system is crashing again.
So to solve this do the following for Battery and AC power settings:
    1) CHECK/MARK the "Set harddisk to sleep mode whenever it's possible" inside powermanagment and put CPU usage option the low or high. And set "let the computer go to sleep after" to "Never"
    2) Restart the ibook.
    3) UNCHECK the option "Set harddisk to sleep mode whenever it's possible" inside powermanagment". Put CPU usage option back to "Automatic". And set "let the computer go to sleep after" to "Never"
    4) Restart the ibook again. When it plays it's startup sound reset PVRAM by holding the following keys down before the backlight turns ON: OptionCommand+PR , when you hear the startup sound again release the buttons and start OSX normally.
So now it doesn't crash again.
I've read all the threads of people having this problem and apparently it has been present since OSX 10.0.0 and when calling apple support they tell you to reset PMU and repair the usual disk permissions, which of cause doesn' work. And there are aparently a lot of really angree costumers, because this problem makes the computer COMPLETLY unusable, but apple has done nothing to help those people because of the the fact there there has been released ZERO patches or changes in OSX to resolve this issue. I can't say that there is something wrong with the iBooks as the several hardware test's indicate no malfunctioning but there is some bug in Mac OSX wich specificly makes the system incable to tell some ibook's how to wake the harddisk from sleep mode.
To the fine folks working on this forum: No I will not send this to apple, they already know about this, and have done nothing (just think of the millions of crash reports they recieve from those hundreds of crashes everybody is geting from this problem). That is why I put this on the forum so that people can actually solve this problem by themselves. If you think it's worth sending to apple, so that this problem can finally be fixed after 4-5 years you are more than welcome to send it directly to somebody who will actually do something about this. And i really hope that giving people the opportunity to make ther computer work, doesn't violated the usual rule "that we are not allowed to write anything that is agains apples interests", wich often results in a removal of threads and ANY chance in SOLVING critical errors.

    sdad sdsdds:
Your observations and solution are right on the money!!
I just was working on an iBook that my father is giving to my sister. I must have started the problem by changing the sleep setting for battery to let HD sleep. After that the fun began! Instability, restart after restart, running Disk Warrior, fixing permissions over and over, etc. I finally zeroed out the HD and installed 10.4. Nothing worked until I read your post.
Thanks a lot. I understand how you feel about posting here, but please be aware that you are helping many people who would be completely without a clue otherwise. Thanks again for your efforts.
Now I can ship my sister her iBook!
