AIR-LAP1242AG + NM-AIR-WLC6 = Config Nightmare!!

I'm trying to configure a LAP1242 using the WLCM. Is there a basic setup guide available anywhere? I've done the searches and found lots of stuff, but none of it is "start from ground zero".
2811w/WLCM - 2960 - LAP1242
FA0/0.100 - wired clients 192.168.2.1/24
FA0/0.21 - LWAPPs 192.168.21.1/24
WL1/0 - WLC 192.168.20.1 /24
WL1/0.22 - Wireless Clients 192.168.22.1/24
WLC has IP of 20.1, management IP of 20.2, and AP Management IP of 20.3
Router has DHCP pool for 21 network with Option 43 value of 20.2 (the WLC)
So I reset the LWAPP to force the discovery, run a debug lwapp events enable on the controller, and see that it gets the discover and join and then I get a ton of Received LWAPP IMAGE_DATA_RES from AP , then it quits. The LWAPP *IS* getting an IP address from the DHCP pool, so I can ping it.. but no HTTP access. Where do I start (over)?
Thanks for any help!!!

FYI I got it working later in the day on Dec 28. The fix was a combination of things --
The DHCP options in the LWAPP DHCP pool have to be spot on. Option 43 hex and Option 60 ascii as described in the document previously cited:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk722/tk809/technologies_tech_note09186a00807112e2.shtml
Also, for the successful run, the WLC Management IP address was used as the DHCP Source for both the Management Address and the AP Manager address (these were set statically, so it's a nonsense loop...)
As time permits, I'll try to muck this up some more to figure out what does and doesn't work and why.
Thanks for your help!

    I have searched for help on this config with no success... all over the WWW
    After a few tries and improvising I got this working. A whole lot of info on this are not documented anywhere or only discussed half way.
    If someone would like this config documented, drop me PM and I'll post it here.

    Hello Ehud,
    Looks like this could be hardware issue. Do you see the power on the NME module when you put it in?
    There could be two problems:
    1. The NME-WAE-502-K9 is bad. Try putting this in a different router and see if it shows up to make sure the NME module is good.
    2. The SM-NM-ADPTR is bad. Try to use different adapter with NME module and see if that shows up.
    3. The router slot itself is bad. try putting the adapter and NME module in different router to verify if it works.
    If nothing above works, you may want to open up a TAC case for RMA creation.

  • NM-AIR-WLC6

    After correctly stopping the controller, we shut the router off to replace another interface. After powering up, the service-module wlan-controller 1/0 status responds with "waiting for registration message" then "trying to recover from error". After several minutes the message is "has failed". Any ideas? Software is 3.2

    Could you console into the NM-WLC6 from the router and see what image it is loading .There was a problem with the NM_WLC cards when it got shipped with a caching software instead of the wireless software .

  • NM-Air-WLC6 Wireless Controller

    Where can I find the documentation for this item?

    It does seem a little scant - however I'd look at the standard docs for the 4400/2006 etc. in terms of configuration (not that they're anything to get excited about barring the basic config).
    The release notes for each new version are standard for all hardware:

    Other bits are all over the place, but a good collection is at:

  • SSM-AIP 7.0(1) Global Correlation config nightmare!

    Thanks, Cisco, for creating a Management nightmare with your "Global Correlation" option in version 7.0...
    Lets start with the SSM-AIP-20 Management interface...
    We have an OOB Management network, with a single POI into this through a separate PIX515E appliance. Both the ASA5540 AND the SSM-AIP-20 reside on this network.
    The first issue was in Routing, since the ASA sees the Management network as "directly attached", and we ROUTE the traffic through the PIX for updates on the SSM module, we had to add translation entries in the PIX515E for the SSM module (10.x.x.x Management, 172.x.x.x translated).
    This was not a big issue, but here is where the nightmare begins...
    First a note: We have the Management network locked down TIGHT, only a couple of Network Management stations allowed into that network to access these devices.
    I enabled Global Correlation in test mode, but it was "failed" every time it tried to update.. Reading other posts, I created ACL and Static NAT in the PIX515E for these IP's:
    204.15.82.17 (IP listed in the IME Global Correlation update server)
    97.65.135.170 and .137 (from another post in these forums)
    207.15.82.17 (IP found in a trace)
    Still no updates. Looking in the PIX logs, I found "no translation" entries for the following addresses:
    198.133.219.25
    209.107.213.40
    208.90.57.73
    I put these in, and it started updating! FIXED? NOT!
    This morning, it was again failing... Looked in the PIX logs again, and found these:
    77.67.85.33
    77.67.85.9
    Entered them, and the SSM is happy again. How long? Who knows?
    So, now I have NINE holes in my "secure" network, and who knows when Cisco will change or add new IP addresses to this list.
    Cisco, if you are listening - ALL access to/from the Global correlation through a single IP? PLEASE?
    (use the one listed in the IME - 204.15.82.17, for the URL "update-manifests.ironport.com")

    A few of the addresses belong to Cisco (originally ironport.com addresses from the ironport aquisition) and are used as manifest servers to provide the sensor a list of files to download.
    The sensor then downloads those files from Akamai servers. Akamai has a large number of servers across the world. Cisco sends the update to Akamai and they replicate it across their servers. When sensors try to connect to the Akamai server it does a DNS query and by controlling the DNS response it can direct sensors to an Akamai server located nearer to the sensor. This allows for better load balancing, response times, and download speeds.
    However, Akamai has a large number of servers (in the thousands I think) world wide, and you can't predict which server your specific sensor will be directed to.
    Sensor connections to the cisco servers for the manifest (file list) is on port 443, and usually to update-manifests.ironport.com URLs.
    Sensor connections to the Akamai servers for the actual file downloads are on port 80 and usually to updates.ironport.com URLs.
    The above is all based on my limited understanding of how the updates work. I may have gotten a few details wrong, but should at least give you a general idea.
    I will be working with development to get this better documented in Release Notes and Readme with the next IPS software release.

    unfortunately, the person had no input...
    i do have a work around for you if you are interested.  it is a little more involved, but works well.  i just tested with Pandora Desktop.  here's the example
    Prereqs:
    Download the AIR 2.6 Linux SDK - Adobe AIR 2.6 SDK Linux (35.8 MB)
    Download the Pandora Air Desktop - www.pandora.com
    Instruction (in terminal)
    unzip the AIR SDK in your home directory
    -it will unpack a "bin" directory in your home
    create a folder ~/apps/pandora
    -this will contain the contents of the pandora app
    unzip the pandora_3_0_3.air contents into ~/apps/pandora
    run the following command
    adl -nodebug ~/apps/pandora/META_INF/AIR/application.xml ~/app/pandora
    NOTE:  if that works for you.  you can create a shortcut with the same command so you won't need to use command line.

  • Compile AIR application with Ant (WindowedApplication could not be found)

    I'm trying to compile my AIR application with Ant, using the mxmlc Ant Task. It seems to compile fine, and I get a .swf, but when I try to run it with ADL, I get the message "Class mx.core::WindowedApplication could not be found." It looks like the AIR libraries aren't being included properly.
    Here's my mxmlc task:
    Class mx.core::WindowedApplication could not be found.
    <mxmlc
         file="${MAIN_MXML}"
         output="${DEPLOY_DIR}/MyApp.swf"
         compatibility-version="3"
         locale="en_US"
         static-rsls="true"
         debug="${DEBUG_FLAG}"
         optimize="true"
         link-report="${DEPLOY_DIR}/report.xml"
         configname="air">
         <load-config filename="${FLEX_HOME}/frameworks/air-config.xml" />
         <library-path dir="${FLEX_HOME}/frameworks/libs" append="true">
              <include name="*.swc" />
         </library-path>
         <library-path dir="${FLEX_HOME}/frameworks/libs/air" append="true">
              <include name="*.swc" />
         </library-path>
         <library-path dir="${FLEX_HOME}/frameworks/locale" append="true">
              <include name="{locale}" />
         </library-path>
         <source-path path-element="${SRC_DIR}" />
    </mxmlc>
    Any idea why this is happening? I've tried not including the load-config section and not including the library paths, but it's always the same result - it can't find WindowedApplication.
    Thanks!

    Hi, Guys!
    I ran into the same problem when i tried to write an ant-script to compile the asDocs for my project.
    After reading shades post i added the air-config (This resolved the WindowApplication couldn't be found error, because it adds all the air libs i guess)
    but lead to the problem that the flex vector-class wasn't found. As Vector is flashplayer 10.0.0 i also
    used the target-player parameter (This fixed that nicely).
    But now i got the problem that i get lots of this error msgs: DepartmentItemRendererClass.as(11):
    Error: The private attribute may be used only on class property definitions.
    I guess the problem now is that ant doesn't understand that the AS-Classes producing that errors are not used as
    standalone-classes. To divide my mxml and AS-Code i import external AS-Classes to my MXML
    like that <mx:Script source="ascodeClass.as" />
    Is there a solution allowing me to use this pattern and still compile my asDoc with ant?
    It confuses me a little, because Ant-Scripts worked to compile the project.
    Thanks in advance!
    Florian

  • Is there opportunity to backup WLC6 via SNMP

    Hello!
    I have NM-AIR-WLC6-K9 in Cisco 2821. Is there opprotunity to retreive configuration via SNMP as from Cisco Catalyst 2960?
    Kind regards,
    Ellad

    Ellad,
    WCS and NCS use SNMP to fetch the configuration from WLCs. This happens when you manually go to Configure Controllers --> Refresh Config from Controller from the WCS/NCS dashboard. (You can also use Background Tasks to automatically backup controller configs on a schedule, which is done using a combination of SNMP and T/FTP).
    If you look at a packet sniff of the traffic between the controller and WCS/NCS during this process you will see several hundred SNMP Gets and Responses. What appears to be happening is that the configuration is being pulled piece by piece from the controller, and not as one gigantic configuration file in a single SNMP query. Based on what I see in the sniffer capture, I think it would be a significant undertaking to try to do this with a 3rd party tool or a custom script.
    As an alternative, you may also find automated backups using SSH scripts and TFTP or FTP, which we recently talked about in another discussion:
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/message/3577890#3577890
    This is what the Controller Configuration Backup background task edit window looks like in NCS:

    I have Cisco 2821 with NM-AIR-WLC6-K9 installed. And number of AIR-AP1131AG-E-K9. Now I set up trivial task to make WLC6 to work as bridge between on of WLANs and one of VLANs on a network segment. I have already attained the following: all is working fine while I use on my test notebook statically assgned IP-address. Broadcasts as ARP-requests are going through the network free. But as soon as I change IP assigning method I hear nothing on DHCP's side. Notebook is unable to acquire address through DHCP. But when I assing IP-address to vlan20 interface on WLC6 and set up correct DHCP-server all works fine again. Now with DHCP. But I don't want use IP on vlan20! I need totally bridged diagram! Is there an exit? :-)

    Ellad,
    The WLC is a DHCP proxy by default, which means that client DHCP traffic is not transparently passed through the WLC onto the upstream network. Instead, it is repackaged as unicast traffic originating from the WLC interface tied to the client's WLAN. If you want upstream servers or relays to hear client DHCP traffic directly without WLC meddling, then do this on your WLC's command line to disable DHCP proxy:
    (wlc6) > config dhcp proxy disable
    This is currently (as of 7.0) a global setting and affects all WLANs.
    Justin
    Ps. I have been disabling DHCP proxy on my WLC deployments as a best practice for about a year now. As a result, one thing I have noticed is that DHCP responses to clients seem to come much faster from the DHCP services behind the WLC (e.g., W2Kx DHCP server, IOS DHCP, ISC-dhcpd, etc.), especially if those DHCP servers are themselves highly responsive. With DHCP proxy turned on (on the WLC), DHCP assignments seem to take sometimes 4x to 5x longer, even on lightning fast networks with lightning fast DHCP servers. I chalk this delay up to a slow, buggy and unevolved DHCP engine in the controllers, which, IMO, has caused more trouble than it's worth over the years--I never use internal DHCP on the controllers, and these days I'm no longer letting them handle the proxying.

  • Windows 8.1 is not connecting tih LWAPs

    Hi
    We are running WLCM
    NME-AIR-WLC6-K9
    with software version 7.0.230.0
    It is working perfectly up to windows 8.0
    Now problem is with windows 8.1 systems, not even a single laptop getting connection of Wifi.
    Please suggest if any upgrade is required at WLCM level.

    How do you have the wlan configured. You shouldn't have a mix of encryption. Either it should be WPA/TKIP or WPA2/AES.  Don't have both defined and don't have a mix like WPA2/TKIP and AES.  If you make a change to the wlan, you will need to delete the profile from the devices and create it again because if the device was joined by clicking on the broadcasting SSID, the device will use the encryption that it associated to which could be for example WPA2/TKIP.

  • Best Practice for NM-WLC ?

    In the last couple of weeks, I have been trying to setup a NM-AIR-WLC6-K9 on a 2811 router.
    I tried various setup combinations as described in :-
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk722/tk809/technologies_tech_note09186a00807112e2.shtml
    My network is very simple (just a few subnets with a router on a stick in between) , and initially I wanted to place all the wireless clients in the same subnet as the wired clients.
    The only way I could get that to work, was by using BVI and sub-interfaces on the 2811 hosting the NM-WLC. (This 2811 is not the default gateway / router-on-a-stick. I have another router that enables routing between subnets.)
    While that works, I have a problem with SNMP replies packets that get sent from the NM-WLC to wired/wireless subnet.
    Finally, I have come to the conclusion (perhaps incorrectly, and therefore this post), that the best way to set wireless clients is :-
    1. To have them in their own separate subnets.
    2. Have a separate subnet for the WLC
    So for example:-
    Data Net :- 10.1.1.0/24 (wired)
    Voice Net :- 10.1.2.0/24 (wired)
    Wireless Net :- 10.1.3.0/24 (wifi)
    Network for WLC Management and AP :- 10.1.10.0/24 (wlan-controller subnet)
    Can anyone who uses a NM-WLC please share their thoughts ?
    Thanks

    I have the same hardware setup and I'm having issues as well. I'd like to see what you and others have done.
    I can't figure out how to get traffic from outside the router to enter the WLC. I've configured my int service-module wlan-controller 1/0 with an IP, and then configured the controller mgmt interface IP on the same subnet.
    If I plug my laptop into the router, I cannot browse to the WLC GUI or even ping it.
