Airport Express for stereo / Belkin Wireless G Plus Router/

Quicksilver G4 using Ethernet connection directly to Belkin Wireless G Plus
Router . Airport Express working remotely via router to stream audio to
loudspeakers. Was able to choose (from iTunes window) whether to play thru
computer speaker (1) or remote speakers (2)
Problem: I temporarily disconnected the Airport Extreme unit. No options now... can only play thru computer. iTunes no longer
shows a dropdown selection option to stream to remote speakers.
Have reset Airport Express. Have used Airport Setup to re-install....have
done this using both a laptop G-4 (successfully to be able to a/b select
either computer speaker or streaming to remote) but when trying to do
the same re-install from the G-4 Quicksilver.... and getting a message that
the installation was successful.... iTunes streaming network signal doesn't show up in the Quicksilver menu bar AND neither is there an option to select
streaming to remote speakers.
Other manipulation tried: disconnected cable modem, reconnected to
"reset" the modem. Other observation: the Airport Express indicator
is steadily green.
I hope this makes enough sense that someone like Tessarex can suggest
a solution to enable iTunes streaming with the G-4 Quicksilver, via the
wireless Belkin router to the Airport Express and stereo. (I don't want to
have to resort to using my wife's laptop to initiate

With your QuickSilver G4 connected via Ethernet to the Belkin router, you should be able to stream iTunes to the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) by joining the Belkin's wireless network as a wireless client.
Try the following...
To set up AirTunes on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, use the AirPort Admin Utility to check these settings:
AirPort tab
- Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
- Wireless Mode: Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)
- Wireless Network: <select the existing wireless network>
Music tab
- Enable AirTunes on this base station (checked)
- Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port (checked)
- iTunes Speaker Name: <whatever you wish>
- iTunes Speaker Password (optional)
In iTunes:
iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
- Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • Original airport card connection to Belkin Wireless G Plus router

I have an iBook G3 with an original airport card in it. The card works because I can acess the internet at school or the local Wi-Fi hotspots. I cannot however connect to my own network at home. The computer will pick up my network but when I try to connect I am asked for a password. I DO NOT have NEVER HAD a password for my network and my PC will connect wirelessly just fine. I have read the manuals for every thing I have and can not figure out why it wont connect. Any suggestions other than getting a new computer?

    Already tried that
Is the Belkin running in 802.11g mode?
It needs to be running in 802.11b or 802.11b/g mixed mode for a Mac with the original Airport card to connect.
Has the Mac been able to connect to any wireless network?

  • How to set up the airport express with a linksys wireless-g broadband router

I need to know if and how to set up an airport express to use to extend a home wi-fi network. I have AT&T service with a 2WIRE modem. I am using a Linksys wireless-G broadband router. I also have the new Macbook Air notebook. The airport express keeps giving me a blinking amber light even when the ethernet cable (from the modem) connected. Please let me know how to set up an extended wifi network using this system. Any help would be appreciated.

If that is all that is done, the Express would not provide more wireless coverage.  Instead, it would duplicate the coverage provided by the Linksys and there would be two WiFi systems covering approximately the same area.  As per my above comment, one Express connects via Ethernet to the Linksys.  The second Express provides the extension.
You must have misunderstood what I was saying.
Linksys is providing a wireless network.
The Express is connected to one of the LAN ports on the Linksys router using a long Ethernet cable (or Ethernet powerline adapters)
The Express is located on the other side of the house, for example.
The Express is configured to create a wireless network using the same wireless network name, security and password as the Linksys router
The Express is configured in Bridge Mode
This has worked quite well for me for years. Computers "switch" from one wireless access point to another smoothly and automatically while they move around the house.
Although this is an "extended" network, it is technically known as a "roaming" network.
This is what I was suggesting as a possible alternative without having to buy more hardware.

  • Airport Express & Netgear DG834G 54Mbps Wireless ADSL Modem Router

Could you offer any advice as to whether an Airport Express could be used as a range extender for an existing Netgear DG834G 54Mbps Wireless ADSL Modem Router setup as I really like the idea of Airtunes and sharing a USB printer. I gather that it is possible to use an Airport Express to extend the range of an Airport Extreme basestation setup but have not been successful in finding any info regarding the Netgear.
    Any info gratefully received !

mac-junkie, Welcome to the discussion area!
No it can not be used as a range extender.
But you can still use it for music and printer support. See KB 302153, AirPort Express: How to join an existing wireless network in client mode.

  • Using Airport Express for iTunes on a non-Apple router

In the past, we used a Microsoft wireless router, and all of the Airport Express stations worked great (we have 3). You can start up iTunes, and iTunes showed all three Airport stations in the popup at the bottom, allowing us to pipe our iTunes music to anywhere in the house.
The Microsoft router starting going bad (2 years old), and so we replaced it with a Linksys wireless router (the one that also supports a USB printer). The Linksys is working fine for printing on that USB printer from any computer in our LAN, and it provides all the LAN computers with internet connectivity; however, the Airport Express stations are flakey at best.
At first they didn't even work (aka, didn't show up in iTunes anymore). I ran Airport Admin and connected each one of them to the iMac directly to configure them. After configuring each one, they did start to show up in iTunes. I restored them to their original locations through out the house using wireless connectivity, and they did show up in iTunes and allowed music to play through. Unfortunately, after a day or two, they dropped off, and they never came back. We never had these kinds of headaches with the Microsoft router, so I'm wondering if there is some incompatibility with the Linksys and Airport Express, or if there is some configuration parameter on the Linksys that I need to tweek. Anyone have any ideas?

I have a similar issue with my Airport Express connected to a Linksys wired router (BEFSR41, the common Linksys 4-port router). My iMac is connected (wired) to one of the ports on the Linksys and the AP Express is connected to one of the other ports. Airport Admin on the iMac can't see it unless I manaully connect to it by specifying the IP address (having fixed its IP from my PowerBook via wireless) and (of course) iTunes on the iMac can't see it either.
I had an older generation BEFSR41 and this setup worked great, but they must have changed something. I can't seem to figure out how to disable whatever port-to-port (network jack to network jack on the router that is) that they have added the "blocks" Airport Admin utility from seeing it.

  • Can I Use Airport Express for Airplay and a non-apple router with streaming capabilities on the same network?

I want to do the following things but can't find one device that fits all purpose.
Wi-Fi router that has USB port to share external hard disk wirelessly to all devices (Mac, Samsung Smart TV, PC, Ipad, Iphone) along with inbuilt torrent download capability that also has a 3.5mm jack to do airplay.
Greedy? Yes I know but why can't we have it all I ask.
Airport Express severs Wifi Router + Airplay purpose
Then there are other non-apple routers in market that satisfy my need to attach external hard disk and stream to the devices mentioned (Note: Timecapsule will not stream to my Smart TV)
So I am thinking why not connect both Airport Express and a second non-apple router and get best of both worlds.
    Is it possible?
    Thanks in advance.

Your iMac does have wireless capability. It does need, however, some wireless network in order to connect to the Internet. It sounds like there are several networks in your area, including one Belkin router that is not encrypted and several other networks that are. I presume that you would know if the Belkin one is yours, and you would have mentioned it. Do not use someone else's network without their permission. In some jurisdictions it is illegal, in others it is merely foolish.
It is impossible to know what Xfinity has given you. Possibly it is only a cable modem, or perhaps it has a router built in. Call them and ask them. If it has a router built in, get them to help you set it up. Note that some tech support people for Internet service providers will resist working with Macs. Be persistent, it is not that different.
If they did not provide a router, you will need to get one. Apple makes the AirPort Extreme base station, the AirPort Express base station and the Time Capsule. Other companies have their own. Be sure you get one that is up to date and has 802.11n capabilities (for the highest speed) and go on from there.
    Best of luck.

You can just unplug the express and use the Uverse wireless or ethernet directly to it.

You can configure the AirPort Expess to "Join a wireless network" and enable the Ethernet port so that Ethernet devices will be able to connect.
In order to print from the iOS devices, you will need to have an application like Printopia installed on your Mac. The Mac must be active when you want to print.
More details here: Printopia - AirPrint to Any Printer - Print from iPad - Print from iPhone ...
There is a free trial available for Printopia, so make sure that it will work before you buy the AirPort Express.

  • Airport Extreme 802.11g vs.Belkin wireless g plus mimo router

I have an Airport Extreme 802.11g and have been having some trouble with hanging connections via my Comcast cable modem. Today I was in Staples and on a whim, bought a Belkin wireless G plus mimo router thinking that switching routers might solve my problems. Before I even take this thing out of the box, can anyone compare the 2? Am I better off just sticking with the Airport?

  • Before I give up on AirPort Express for good

I have two AirPort Express base stations which are behaving in exactly the same way, which is to say they won't talk to the world. Even attempting such tends to put both AirPort Admin Utility and AirPort Setup Assistant into a very bad (i.e. spinning-disc, force-quit-needed) mood, or at best the dreaded "An error occurred communicating with the selected base station."
I am told that I can perform a factory default reset as follows:
" 1. Unplug the AirPort Express from the power outlet.
    2. Press and hold the reset button.
    3. Plug AirPort Express back into an AC outlet (still holding the button).
    4. Continue holding the button until you see the light flash green four times, which should happen after a few seconds.
    5. Release the button."
I've done this many times with both units. The lights do not behave as decribed: there is a lightning-quick green flash, then a solid amber. After maybe 20 seconds after releasing the button, the solid amber changes to flashing, and it never comes back.
There seems to be just no communicating with these things. I've tried both crossover and regular Ethernet cables. I've tried changing IP addresses on both of my laptops -- which are working fine wirelessly with my third and only functioning AirPort Express, which is connected to the DSL router -- as best I can discern from the support documents. I've done this for many hours over several months while pondering those docs, and the next thing I'm going to try is throwing these little disasters against the wall and watching them shatter into hopefully at least "X" pieces. It won't exactly make me happy, but at least it will be a resolution of sorts.
In truth, even when it was working, this product was a disappointment. It was somewhere while trying to resolve its flaws that the amber flash of death began. I was hoping to use one machine with a large external hard drive as a music server, wire-connected to an Express, to talk wirelessly to a local laptop, which would then talk wirelessly to the stereo in whatever room I was in. Surely, a truly smart network could arrange to send the music directly from the server to the stereo, bypassing the intermediate machine. Yet Apple's is not such a network, and the audio dropouts from the two consecutive wireless transmissions (which were each only one room apart) became too much to be tolerated, and I began messing with things.
Perhaps I messed too much...yet, surely, there must be a way to start again. I've got two laptops which are happily talking to an AirPort Express which is happily talking to the Internet via my DSL router, and two other AirPort Expresses which aren't talking to anything. Is there any way to save this union? Any advice would be very, very much appreciated at this point.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

you are just too confused right now. there's nothing wrong with the two express routers. its just a relationship of hardware to the software, which the user must come to grips.this is just the way it it with these routers. What would I do(since I've had the problem but since have learned to deal with it) reset the Express and I use a wireless Mac to "find" the routers---which must be selected under the Airport icon BEFORE using any Airport Utility to confirgure the routers. I don't use the setup assistant but configure the routers manually. Yes you may have to reset and or unplug the Express to do the above but sooner or later you must learn the oddities about it anyway. Remeber you did introduce some other variation to the routers and the software setup.
If you can't find your network name under Airport icon then use your system preferences/Netwrok/Airport/preferred drop down menu. If found there then select and apply then select under Airport icon then use the utility. If not found then use the + button and if that does not work then type in the network name. Bottom line all of the above countermeasures have never failed me on the Exprexx and the new Extreme routers. Its just a learning experience. Maybe Apple could have made the experience easier to use or maybe that's the way it is but I got mine up and running soild for 2 months now with out issues. Power failure they just come back on I do nothing except reset my Vonage by unplugging it for a minute. Hope this helps you and don't give up.

  • AirPort Express - can't connect wirelessly after set up

    Hi,
I've had an AirPort Express for about 4 months now to stream music wirelessly within my home network (inc. wireless router).
The connection with the AirPort Express has always been.....problematic when streaming through iTunes or AirFoil the connection drops out often and many times it's given up entirely.
I thought I'd solved this problem by plugging in an ethernet cable and resetting the device to factory defaults and setting up from scratch. However, once I unplugged the ethernet cable I can't connect via Airport util wirelessly at all.
After reading the manual from cover to cover, again I thought it could have been a problem with where the airport express was located (fairly near the stereo and close to a couple of power cables.
I moved the device to a plug socket on its own with no electrical devices within a metre of the device and nothing plugged into it. I plugged in the ethernet cable and went through the set up from factory defaults again. When the device restarted I could briefly (for a couple of seconds) connect to it wirelessly before it could no longer be recognised by Airport utils. I can access the device via ethernet cable, but wireless (which is why I bought it in the first place) will not work.
Tried soft resets, hard resets, restoring it to factory defaults and am now at the end of my tether.
Can someone please help me with this?

Hello, Im not a techie, but, if its the same thing as I have....the ethernet port is for your ISP WAN cable. Your laptop should connect wirelessly. After resetting the router, use Airport Utility to rename it, set up a password for the router and the wireless network before other things.
This line from your post throws me for a loop ). "However, once I unplugged the ethernet cable I can't connect via Airport util wirelessly at all." I'm not sure what to make of that, unless you connected your laptop to router with a cable and tried to connect wirelessly also.
Anyway,,,,,on the express router there is a ethernet port for your ISP WAN connection, a usb port for printer and a jack to connect your stereo. Your laptop should connect to the router wirelessly.

  • Hello, I have Iphone 5 with Itunes music, airport express, 2 stereo speakers. What else do I need to hear music on the speakers?

Hello, I have Iphone 5 with Itunes music, airport express, 2 stereo speakers. What else do I need to hear music on the speakers?

    Hello ricsch,
It sounds like you want to setup your Airport Express to Airplay music from your iPhone 5.  I found an article with steps to help you get this setup:
Connecting to an existing Wi-Fi network, exclusively for iTunes music
AirPort Express used exclusively for AirPlay by setting it up in Client Mode.
Choose this configuration if the computer containing your iTunes library may be out of direct range of the AirPort Express, but is within range of the Wi-Fi network.
    How to Set It Up
Connect your AirPort Express to your home stereo or powered speakers.
From your computer, join the wireless network. Use the AirPort status menu in the menu bar on a Mac. On a Windows-based computer, hold the pointer over the wireless connection icon until you see your AirPort network name (SSID), and choose it from the list if there are multiple networks available. Enter the network password, if necessary.
Open iTunes on your computer and choose the AirPort Express(es) you wish to stream music through from the speakers pop-up menu in the lower-right corner of the iTunes window.
I also recommend reviewing the sections titled "Some things you should know about AirPort Express with AirPlay" and "Things to consider before you begin" in the full article:

Can I run a cat5 cable to a 4 port hub from a cisco router then connect one of the hub's output ports to an airport express to 'extend' my wireless range?
    Flow would be
Cable modem---->cisco e2000 wifi router (This is broadcasting wifi but not strong enough)---->4 port hub ---->airport express (to extend the wifi in another part of house)

Yes, you can do this as you stated. In essence you will want to configure both routers for roaming network. Please check out the following Apple Support article that describes this type of network. Although this article uses two or more AirPorts, it can be done with just about any manufacturer's router.
