Hi.
I can not find an answer for my error-problem:
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) dual band is reporting problems!
I have an optimum on line cable modem connected to my AirPort Extreme (802.11n) dual band.
Ethernet cables connect it 1. into my new Nehalem Mac Pro, 2. into my back-up Quicksilver PowerMac. I also have 2nd gen. iPod touch works on WiFi.
This set-up has been working well but now I daily get the above error. Sometimes it says also: You have different locations set-up and it asks me to go through the set-up procedure. May be I did the initial set-up incorrect. I don't quite understand "locations" and it's purpose.
Also the Airport runs very hot so I put a small fan in front of it. A few times I had to disconnect the cable mains to reset and get back my service. Please help.

Can you tell what's telling you about those locations? An Apple AirPort unit can maintain different "configurations" so that it could be used in different locations without a complete reconfiguration. However, I don't believe they're ever referred to as "locations". On the other hand, a Mac can have multiple "locations" defined in the Network panel of System Preferences. Those can be useful if the Mac is used in different places with different arrangements.
If your AirPort Extreme is having problems the status light on the front will probably be amber. If you launch AirPort Utility and double-click on the AirPort Extreme item on the left, you should be able to see more details about the problem.

    Where is the physicalInterfaces stuff? I have two things plugged in on the LAN ports, a NetGear GS108 switch and the mac mini (statically assigned IP) so I think I should see them via SNMP much like it's mentioned here:

  • Airport Extreme (802.11n dual) breaks network HP photosmart 3210 scanning

    I just "upgraded" from a Netgear to a new April 2009 Airport Extreme Base Station (802.11n dual). With the latest HP software etc the HP photosmart 3210 all-in-one scanner (connected via network to the router) works fine with my macs (a bunch of 10.5 machines), but when I swap out and use the new Apple Router the Scanning hanges and a message pops up on HP Scan Pro SW "Error (Sorry, scanner could not be initialized. An error has occurred communicating with the scanner.)" I reinstalled the HP SW and re-added the printer - no change.
    Printing is fine - and scanning is fine when I go back to my old router. This looks like a router firmware issue, I'm probably going to have to return the router - bummer - anybody have this issue or can help?

    Thanks for the idea, but my printer is connected by ethernet to the router and desktop computers - (I haven't tried wireless scanning with my laptops). I wouldn't think that wireless settings would impact the wired part of the router - but you never know.
    It is frustrating how many incompatibility there are from router to router I don't understand why there can't be a standard and everyone sticks to it. (another example, google maps detailed zooming in and out will always freeze my netgear router - which is one reason I went to the apple router!)

  • Airport Extreme Base Station Dual Band has WiFi problems.

    I can only connect my Droid X to the wifi network of my Apple Airport Extreme?  I have an Ipad and another computer with a wifi dongle but none of them will connect.  Only ethernet connected computers and my DroidX works. Any suggestions?

    I have the Airport set up to "connect via ethernet" and "share a public ip address"? (I don't understand what this means, share public ip as not computer literate).
    This would be the AirPort's default setting and what you will want 99.99% of the time. The "Share a public IP address" is referring to the fact that your AirPort provides a service that allow multiple clients on the local network to be able to access the Internet at the same time. This service is known as Network Address Translation or just NAT. Without NAT, only one computer could access the Internet and would be exactly what you would find if you connected the computer directly to the modem instead of the AirPort.
    Anyway, all is working OK with the internet and wireless etc, playstation 3 connects to the PS network with an open NAT which is what I wanted, but I am worried I have no firewall or security?
    Your AirPort's NAT service is one form of protection. The other is to enable wireless encryption (WEP, WPA, or WPA2) to prevent "uninvited guests" from accessing your wireless network ... and Internet connection.
    Should the Airport extreme not be set to "distribute a range of ip addresses", it seems to be doing this anyways, who is giving out the ip addresses then?
    No, you don't want to change the setting to "Distribute a range of IP addresses." This is intended for those unique situations where your ISP is providing you with one or more static IP addresses. This is typical with businesses, not consumers. In addition to NAT, your AirPort also provides another service: DHCP. This is how it provides IP addresses to clients on the local network.

    I have an "AirPort Extreme 802.11n (2nd Gen)" according to a serial number lookup here.
    I am not sure if this is the same as MB053LL/A which is mentioned is this archived thread. (Couldn't find a way to lookup the part number + couldn't find the tech specs at apple.com.)
    I was wondering if this base station has the capability to setup a guest network in addition to the primary network.
    According to the above mentioned Apple Discussions thread, the base station needs to have simultaneous dual band operation capability to make this possible. (Since I couldn't find the tech specs, I'm not sure what this base station has.)
    I would assume from this Knowledge Base Article that the 2nd generation AirPort Extreme is one generation too old:

    Hi, flips01. You are correct. Simultaneous dual-band was introduced with the 3rd generation.

  • Airport Extreme 802.11n should I WDS or Extend to Bridge ethernet?

    If I buy two Apple Airport Extreme Base Stations (dual-band 802.11n) can I set-up WDS without dropping speeds to G? I've read that if I have any 802.11b/g clients that the entire WDS clocks down to 802.11g. I'm wondering if that is true with the new simultaneous dual band models? Can't I WDS the 802.11n bands and offer 802.11g simultaneously to clients on the other band without bringing the WDS down? Do I want to?
    I would just "extend" but I don't want to have the wireless clients have to go through two "hops" to get out to the internet. As I understand it... all of my wireless clients would go through the relay, then to the main, then out the Internet instead of just connecting straight to the Main. My range doesn't need to be extended as far as coverage goes... one base station would cover my entire house. I'm basically just looking at the other AEBSn to act as a wireless to ethernet bridge to a part of my house where I several ethernet enabled devices out of hardwire range. Do I need the AEBSn or maybe just the new 802.11n AE?

    The simplest, which may also be the best way to do this is use an AEBS as your "main" router and configure an AirPort Express 802.11n to "join" the wireless network and enable the ethernet port. Then connect a simple 5 port switch to the port on the AirPort Express for your ethernet devices.
    Oddly, if you configure a second "remote" AEBS to "join", the ethernet ports +are not+ enabled on the AEBS. The ethernet ports are enabled, if you configure it to "extend a wireless network".

    Issue
    Please help as I'm having issues with my WDS network. I've setup using both the wizard and manual and also hard reset on both units to setup again but cannot get them both to communicate to one another. Both units are showing green LED under their configuration. For my last attempt, I've tried adding the Airport ID (MAC) of the Airport Express to the Access Control and also DHCP Reservations on the Airport Extreme but still no luck.
    The Airport Express (setup as remote) does not even show up in the Airport Extreme's Summary as Wireless Clients. In the WDS tab, the Airport Extreme is set up as WDS main, Allow wireless clients box checked and WDS Remotes has the Airport Express' AirPort ID in the list. On the Airport Express, WDS is set up as remote, with Allow wireless client box checked and the Airport ID of the Airport Express in the WDS Main.
    I can connect clients to both units. Both units are configured using the same Network Name and have the same WPA/WPA2 security key. The Airport Extreme (main) however is connected to my broadband so any devices or clients connected to it are able to get outside. Connected devices or clients are assigned IP address via DHCP with IP 10.0.x.x. If wifi devices or clients connect to the Airport Express (remote) they are assigned a completely different IP addresses 169.254.x.x, they are not able to browse the internet or talk to other clients connected on the 10.0.1.x network. The Internet Connection configuration on the Airport Express (remote) is Connect Using Airport (WDS) and Using DHCP. I've even tried manually and entered the IP address 10.0.1.199 that I had assigned to the Airport Express from the Airport Extreme and Router Address as IP of Airport Extreme (10.0.1.1).
    I think I've tried everything but I'm still having this problem. The remote Airport Express is not extending my existing Airport Extreme network. Any ideas???

    This may or may not be helpful, or it may be something you've already tried or are aware of so I apologize if that's the case.
    I have been researching ways to set up the Dual Band Network supported by the AEBS and came across your post. I've got an AEBS and (2) AirPort Express set-up currently (AEBS is main and the Express are participating in the WDS as remotes) and I'm trying to configure one of the Express to utilize a 802.11b/g compatible network while the AEBS runs a 5Ghz 802.11n Only network.
    AAR, since the AirPort Express are 2.4Ghz 802.11b/g ONLY (no support for 802.11n), you have to be sure to set-up your AEBS first and select "802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)" in the Radio Mode drop-down on the AEBS before you attempt to connect an AirPort Express. The AEBS should be set-up as your "WDS main" and the Express should be set-up as a "WDS remote" for the network you established when you set-up the AEBS.
    Bottom line here is the Express won't be seen by the AEBS unless the AEBS is 'looking' in the 802.11b/g 2.4Ghz frequency.

    You may want to try reinstalling Mavericks. Airport Utility installed by Mavericks may no longer connect to your older AEBS (though I've not heard that.) Installing the Old AirPort Utility (Version 5.6) on Mountain Lion | frank.is.
    Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
         Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
         COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
         after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
         Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
         Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
    After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
         Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Select ReinstallLion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from
         the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
         Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is
                    three times faster than wireless.

  • Installing Airport Extreme 802.11n card in eMac killed keyboard?

    Hello,
    I got an Airport Extreme 802.11n base station and card for my eMac (which I want to run in the next room from my new Mac Pro) from local Apple Store yesterday.
    I read and followed the card installation instructions exactly. - This included installing the software from the CD.* - But as soon as I installed the card, my mouse and keyboard lost contact with the eMac. (Totally unresponsive to key commands or mouse movement.)
    I shut down my eMac and my (new) Philips DSL modem: both of these have shown no symptoms up to the time of the card installation. I un-installed the card and waited 5-minutes. Modem and eMac came back normally and so did my keyboard and mouse.
    Just prior to installation, I ran DiskWarrior and Repair Permissions. Also: I unplugged and "re-plugged" the USB keyboard and mouse before shutting down of eMac & modem - this made no difference.
    * I did notice: The documentation for the base station says the eMac needs Airport Setup Assistant 5.2. The eMac has Airport Setup Assistant 4.2. Yet - when I ran the installation program, it recognized and reported as updated Airport Setup Assistant 4.2.
    Anyone have a solution to my loss of keyboard and mouse with card installed? Please - the Mac Pro arrives tomorrow.

    I'm answering my own question:
    I got around to simply trying a second time to install the Airport Extreme card in this eMac. This time - I shut it down before starting installation of the card.
    I suspected that shutting down would be a good idea - since it seems very likely that the System needs to load whatever drivers or extensions are needed to enable Airport. But the instruction either did not mention shutting down before installing the card or I missed mention of it in my haste to complete this and numerous other tasks before day's end.
    Anyway - that seems to be what happened because bootup was normal and the mouse cursor and keyboard worked as soon as the desktop appeared.
    Now - I proceed to setup the base station and test it on the eMac. If all goes as I hope - in 36 hours I'll have both this old eMac and the new Mac Pro living happily in their separate rooms.

    I now have 802.11g airport router and wish to up grade to n. I have a new Macbook Pro and MacBook Air with n capability. Also have a wireless printer, air express and a wi-fi sony blue ray player. Am I going to have problems switching all these over?

    In addition to Bob's remarks:
    If it works now on your "g" network, it will work on the new one. But: you don't want the down compatibility from n to g.
    Especially if you have the new Extreme with the 2 bands (2.4 and 5GHZ): the 5GHz band, although a somewhat lower sending power/reach is MUCH faster.
    Like Bob said (he is the WIFI master) the printer and bluray player may have their own "specialty" behaviour.
    The printer probably will not give a problem if you do not use its own wireless but connect it to the extreme with usb cable.
    The bluray player I don't know, you should try it connected to the extreme.
    Unlikely that, when connected directly, they will give problems.

    I travel a lot and need to use the AirPort Extreme both in the US and Europe. Can anyone who has it already tell me if it says on the bottom of the power adapter 100-240V, 50-60Hz before I buy one? It is not specified anywhere else on-line.

    But don't you think the Airport Express would make a better travel router? After all that's what it's designed for.

    802.11n refers to a speedy wireless connection. When
    you connect with a wire, you're not using 802.11 at
    all. You're using Ethernet, and your Core Duo mac
    will connect to the Airport Extreme at 100Mbs (a
    little faster than the top speed of 802.11n). Then
    The top speed of 802.11n is considerably faster than 100Mbps. In narrow band mode, the Airport Extreme cards are connecting to AE Base Stations (AEBS) at 130Mbs. In wide band mode, 270Mbs. In theory, that makes connecting to the new AEBS device wirelessly faster than via the wired ethernet. It's a design decision that just doesn't make sense in my opinion.

    When the new AirPort Extreme 802.11n was announced, Apple didn't specifically state which version of the 802.11n draft it was using.
    At the time of the announcement, version 2 of the 802.11n draft had not been submitted yet for approval.
    So my question is what version of the Draft-N spec is it using?
    1.0?
    2.0?

    As I understand it, the big change was going from a single 40 MHz channel to dual 20 MHz channels because some b/g base stations would get confused by 40 MHz channels, causing problems on their networks.

    The answer depends on what you need the TC to accomplish. If all you need it to do is perform Time Machine backups, simply have it join your existing network in client mode. It would be if it were to connect to your existing router (presumably your Extreme), not through an "extended" wireless network (presumably your Express).
    If you need the TC to "extend" your network so as to serve additional wireless clients, you can do that also. Configure it to "extend" the network created by your Extreme.
    As you can see it's quite versatile.

    This would be the correct setting if the AirPort Extreme is connected to a simple modem (one ethernet port).

    5 GHz name indicates that you have elected to use the option to assign a separate name to the 5 GHz network. This will allow you to "tell" compatible computers to connect to that network, rather than the slower 2.4 GHz network
    Use Wide Channels is recommended for 5 GHz operation.
    Interference Robustness often does more harm than good and should not be used unless you know you are in a area with a lot of wireless networks and you feel that your network is experiencing interference issues from a nearby network.
