Airport Extreme disconnects IChat

My AEBS is connected to a router which gets its WAN from a VOIP Wan connection. I had to put the VOIP box inbetween the cable modem and the router because it will only work correctly that way. My AEBS works fine for everything EXCEPT I cannot logon to IChat...if I connect the router directly to the modem..the IChat works fine. I have two PB g/4's and a desktop PMG4..none of the the IChat's can connect...

I like Neptunes configuration. I also have two
Airport Extreme N routers. One is set up for all the
hardwired (no wireless) stuff including the Vonage.
The other is in bridge mode and takes in all the
wireless Macs. No problems what so ver. I am
fortunate also..
Indeed. Set set up "bridge" mode, see the documentation indicating how to "extend your network". It is one check box in the main AE and one dropdown in the bridge AE. Do not try to set a WDS network for that purpose. It MUCH MORE difficult to get all settings right.

  • Airport Extreme disconnects when I unplug my Macbook Pro

I just got a new Airport Extreme and set it up in "BRIDGE" mode in order to be able to extend my WiFi from my basement office to the ground and upper floors.  Working fine BUT -- when I unplug my MacBook Pro the Airport Utility shows a yellow triangle with an exclamation point in it and it says the network is disconnected!  But I need to be able to disconnect my MBP and still have my other computers (one also ethernet connected; others and iPad WiFi)-- even when the MacBook Pro is disconnected.
I like having the bridge mode because I can use Printopia from ecamm to print to pdf wirelessly to my MBP even when the MBP is only connected via ethernet - not via wifi (that should work too)-- but is it the fact that I am in BRIDGE mode that is causing this warning in Airport Utility?
Any comments appreciated and I can work on this more later.
    THANKS!

I believe I understand this better now. When I unplug my MacBook Pro from the network including disabling Wi-Fi, then when I open AirPort Utility it of course shows and I am no longer connected to my home network on the MBP. All the other hardwired or Wi-Fi connected computers, printers, hard drives and iPads are still connected.

  • My Airport Extreme Disconnects From the Cable MoDem Every Few Minutes

    Hello,
I start a new topic as my previous title was wrong and there was no suitable answer.
I have had an Airport Extreme for 3 years and it sometimes disconnects after a few minutes. Actually, it more looks like that the Airport crashes: the "PC Link" light on the cable modem goes off, the Airport lights go off and I cannot find my Airport Network any more on my computer.
When this happens, I can either unplug it from the power and plug it back in, or simply move the Airport around a little bit, and it will re-start. Sometimes the problem does not re-occur for a few hours or days, sometimes it keeps happening every few minutes and of course drives me crazy...
    Is it because ... :
    - ... my Airport has a faulty connection and I should replace it?
    - ... there are power surges in my electricity installation (eg this seems to happen when I or my neighbors have air conditioners on, I live in one of those old New York buildings with old electricity installations), and I should get an anti-surge device, or a newer Airport would deal with this better?
    - ... of something else? I tried replacing the Ethernet cable between the MoDem and the Airport and it failed, there does not seem to be a source of interference around my place.
    Thanks for your help!

I have had similar problems. Not as bad as some of you but usually in the morning I discover that I have dropped onto someone elses wireless they are not as fast. Then I have to troop upstairs, unplug the Extreme, replug it and then everything is allright until the next morning. But it is sporadic. It has run fine now for a few days. This problem has persisted now for a year. And yes I have tried resetting it.
Next month I plan on going to the big city and I am going to take my Extreme to one of Genius' at the Apple Store. I am curious if anybody else has tried that solution and how much it might cost.

  • Airport Extreme Disconnecting Windows Computer

My roommate is getting disconnected from my Airport Extreme fairly regularly. I have everything updated, and I'm running WPA2 Personal security. He's running Vista, and as far as I know, everything is updated there too. It seems to happen every 5 minutes or so over a period of time. Then, it it will be fine for a while. It often seems to happen while he's playing World of Warcraft.

what version AE.. because the tall AC models cannot be configured from windows at all.
For Gen1-5 you can download airport utility for windows.

  • Airport Extreme disconnects wireless Windows 7 laptop

I have an Airport Extreme (both antennas enabled) and multiple Windows 7 laptops regularly lose connectivity to the base station. When the connectivity is lost, I can switch from one antenna band to the other (B/G to N or vice versa) to reconnect, and it'll work fine again for a period of time (sometimes 20 minutes, sometimes 3 hours). I do often notice connectivity disconnects when doing Lync VoIP, but not exclusively. Sometimes I'll be surfing the web, etc.
The base station is running 7.6, and I've reproduced this with 7.5.x as well. Multiple Windows machines show this behavior (Lenovo and HP I've tested). I've updated wireless drivers on the Windows machines. I can't reproduce this over a wired connection.
I have a Macbook Air that I so far haven't seen this issue on, and I don't recall seeing my connection reset on my iPad as I surf.
I did notice a couple lines in the log file of the base station:
Severity 5: (WAN) link state is down.
    then 7 seconds later
Severity 5: (WAN) link state is up.
I assume my internet provider is working fine because I can very quickly switch from one antenna band to the other and get my network service working again.
I found this thread, but it isn't clear if there is a modem problem because I can't reproduce this when connected to the AE via ethernet.
Any suggestions on how to better troubleshoot this would be appreciated.

Sorry, but Apple has not updated AirPort Utility for Windows for about 3 years.
You will need to use a Mac running Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion or Lion to administer the newer "ac" AirPorts.......or.....an iPad or iPhone with AirPort Utility for iOS installed on the device.

  • Airport Extreme disconnecting 2-4 times a day

I have a DSL 300-T ADSL Modem (not a router) bought from the Apple shop connected to an Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS). I live in the UK and am using a PPOA connection with Orange Broadband.
Unfortunately, there are frequent disconnections (probably at least 3 times a day). During all these times, the modem is connected to the internet, but the AEBS either remains green showing no problems even though it has self-assigned a private IP address for itself (169.xx.xx.x). At other times, the AEBS blinks amber and says ethernet unplugged when it isn't.To make matters worse, the Base station then cannot reconnect because it cannot scan it, even though it's 2 feet away from my MacBook. Ironically it scans for networks outside my house before mine!
I've tried many 'solutions' from the Apple Discussions pages but none has worked for me.
It's a curious problem, but it's very annoying not having a reliable AEBS connection. I was hoping the issue would have been resolved in Snow Leopard but the issue remains.

About 10 days ago I purchased a 15" MBP for my wife as an early Birthday and Christmas present.
Since that time we have experienced problems very similar to what other people are posting. Internet works fine but suddenly we lose connection to the Airport Extreme. All I have to do is unplug the Airport Extreme and wait 10-30 sec, re-plug and we are up and running again.
I have tried the power down everything from the cable (Time Warner) modem to the computer and restart. Still, get network shutdowns every 30 min to 4 hours. Very frustrating.
Currently we have 3 apple laptops, 2 iMacs, 2 Windows XP laptops and two video consoles that utilize the network.
Where should I read for the best information on changing my airport extreme network to a 192.168.1.x set-up? Honestly does not sound like fun but looks like I might need to do it.
    Thanks,

  • HELP - Airport Extreme Disconnect and Connection problems

    Hi everybody,
I recently (~2 months) got an Airport Extreme (Early 2009 Model). I was very happy with it, and everything worked fine, until a few weeks ago, when I started getting the following problems.
First, my iTouch wouldn't connect automatically anymore and when I tried connecting, it would say "Unable to Connect" around 5 times until I could connect, and then I would remain connected (full three bars) with internet for about 30 seconds, and then my connection would suddenly drop to 1 bar and my internet would stop working, and then it would eventually disconnect. May I just say that this was happening when I was sitting right next to the WiFi.
Secondly, all of the computers (both Windows and Mac) started having a similar problem: Connection Time Outs around five times until I can connect, and eventually signal dropping without the computer or anything moving. (BTW, the cable connections work fine, it's the the WiFi that doesn't work).
I tried changing channels, enabling Interference Robustness, and reverting to previous software updates, and also eventually Hard Reseting the box, without any results...
What could be my problem, and how could I fix it please?
    Thanks a lot...

Roger, you must be psychically broadcasting this because I just seconds ago posted the following on another thread...
I hope I am not "typing" too soon but I seem to have identified my wireless problem. After trying EVERYTHING in the world to try and figure out why my own network wouldn't work, I had a flash of inspiration. I changed the Channel setting in airport utility from "automatic" to 11. I just picked 11 because I liked the number - no other reason. Now, I am wirelessly connected again. I do not know why this worked; The channel setting has been on automatic for months and worked fine until late Friday night. So those of you who have been fighting this issue, give the channel fix a try. Your mileage may vary and may the force be with you.
(Will post this on another thread pertaining to this subject too. If I can keep just one soul from sacrificing many precious hours on this frustrating issue, then I will consider myself one good deed up on my Karmic calendar.)

  • Airport Extreme Airdisk's REALLY SLOW all of a sudden

I have my media hard drive connected via USB to my Airport Extreme. It serves all the media for my iTunes libraries etc. It's been working flawlessly for months, but now all of a sudden, it's cripplingly slow.
I've been trying to transfer one 800mb video file all night and it keeps saying "21 hours" and only transfers a few kb every minute or two.
I've restarted my Airport Extreme, disconnected and reconnected the USB HD and restarted the ADSL modem the AE connects to the internet through. I've also tried a variety of different files.
    No difference.
Any thoughts? I know I could completely reset my AE, but if a restart won't fix it, then I doubt a reset will.

chirhodesign, any update on the situation?
i'm helping my friend overseas with this exact same problem. she just bought a new hdd and as a shared network drive via airport extreme it's EXTREMELY SLOW, maybe around 100kbps transfer rate. we're pulling our hair out trying to troubleshoot this.
does anybody have a possible solution?

  • Constant Disconnection from Airport Extreme Networked iMac (late 2009)

I keep trying to copy fairly large files (2-7GB) over my Aiport Extreme (latest—5th generation) network from a early 2011 Macbook Pro to a 27" iMac (late 2009), and I keep getting disconnected from the iMac while the file is copying. I've tried repairing permissions on every computer in the house and restarting them, but I'm still having issues. I have no issues copying files to another late 2011 Macbook Pro in the house, so it seems to be happening only when I copy them to the iMac. The iMac is running Snow Leopard and the Macbook Pros are running Lion, so could that have something to do with it?
Additionally, I had been trying a wireless extended network with another previous generation Airport Extreme, but I found the connection wasn't much stronger with the extension, so I've just been leaving the second Airport Extreme unplugged. I've had that unplugged for months and haven't had any issues, so I don't think that's the problem.
I'm hoping this isn't a sign of something being wrong with the Aiport card in the iMac. Anyone have any ideas?

    Bump?

  • My network, based on modem, wifi router (Airport Extreme),Time Capsule and Airport Express simply disconnects with all the lights green on the modem and Extreme, but the other components offline, 5 or so times per day.  I suspect the Extreme.

I have a Cisco System3 modem, feeding an Airport Extreme, which connects wirelessly a Timecapsules and an Airport Express both of which extend the network, ie send out more WiFi signal.  The system worked well for a long time, say a year and a half and then it started dropping out.  All the lights on the modem and airport Extreme stay green, but the other two components are blinking yellow. I've tried limiting the channels, but there are few sources in my neighborhood.  I have tried resetting the Extreme which worked for a week and now it's back to its random disconnect behavior.  I have read some of these blogs and no one seems to know what to do, especially not Apple.  Do I just get another router or what?  What do I lose if I use a non Apple router and what would you suggest?

Welcome to the discussion area, Junkcanoe!
I don't have a setup like yours, but might be able to offer some assistance.
Basically I have two jacks, a TC and an AE and I'd like to create a roaming network. Both of them are set to bridge mode with the same SSID, WPA2 security, same password, etc.
This would be the normal way to set up a roaming network, but the wild card here is that we don't know anything about how the main router that supplies the ethernet connections (valid IP addresses) to the condos might be configured.
For example, most apartments, hotels, etc that provide ethernet jacks usually limit the number of devices that can connect to each jack. Hotels tend to limit this to one or two devices. I counted six devices that you say will work properly plus a few more. Since you have two separate ethernet jacks, you may be looking at a situation where each jack is allocated a total of 4 devices, or valid IP addresses.
The bottom line here is that we won't be able to make much progress until we know more how the main router there has been configured. Is it possible for you to ask the complex manager (who will probably need to ask the IT guy) how many devices are allowed to connect per ethernet jack? Another way to ask the same question is how may valid IP addresses will each ethernet jack allow?
If you can, could I ask you to perform an experiment? Rather than have both the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule each connect to a separate ethernet jack, can you temporarily move one device near the other and connect them together using an ethernet cable? (Or, use a long ethernet cable if you don't want to move either device) LAN <-> port on one to LAN <-> port on the other. In other words, you'll only be using one of the ethernet ports in the condo for this experiment.
Any difference in performance or number of devices allowed to connect?

  • HT4628 After installing the new OS from apple (10.8.2) my macbook pro keeps disconnecting from the internet.  I am connecting with an Airport Extreme and while it shows I am connected, every 20-45 seconds its searching for a wireless connection.  Any sugg

I guess I posted my question as a title but that is my issue.  My airport is connected via wireless yet it keeps searching for a wireless connection, hence I am experiencing bad latency and disconnection issues.  Anyone know a solution?

I have the same problem. And in my case it happens when i transfer "large" files over the WiFi. When i send an MP3 filer over Skype i loose connection. When i transfer updates between my iPhone 5 / iPad 3 and iMac with Mountain Lion i loose connection. When i have a video conference i loose connection. You get the idea.
There is usually like 30 people using their own router on the 2.4 GHz band near by. None on the 5 GHz band which i use. But when my WiFi freezes on ML i can only see my own router. And i am also connected to it. But all my neighbors WiFi routers are now invisble to me. My network stalled.
What i do is that i disconnect my WiFi and then reconnect it again. Thank fixes it. But all my transfers and what not has been dropped. And i have to start all over - and the WiFi will stall again.
While my WiFi is frozen on the iMac with ML i have no problem using the same router on the same 5 GHz band with my iPhone 5 or iPad 3.
Downgrading the AirPort Extreme to 7.6.1 from 7.6.3 helped a bit. Now i only loose connection a few times each day.
It is a software error in ML i am sure of. A driver maybe. But i am suspecting that it is either a speed-sync error or an energy saving error. Like the network card turns of in the middle of a file transfer to save enrgy - maybe.
When i stream movies from my iMac to my Apple TV or  3 there is no problem at all. It is so odd.

I have been unsuccessfully trying to extend the wifi of my Time 2T Capsule with an Airport Extreme 2nd Gen. It works for a while and then loses configuration. I have done everything possible, disconnected it, reset it but it keeps failing, what to do?

What model and firmware is the 2TB TC?
    What firmware is the AE?
Does the AE get good signal from the TC in its current location?
Signal can only be extended that is received intact.
Is it extending on 5ghz? As I remember it a Gen2 AE is only single band, although you can choose either 2.4ghz or 5ghz.
I am fairly sure you are going to tell me your TC is AC model..
I would do a couple of things..
    1. Fix the wireless name, make it short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
    2. Fix the wireless channel for 2.4ghz so it is not going to jump around.
    3. Get real results from the AE in its current location for signal strength.. this is really only possible on v5 utility. And that is a double pain with Mavericks because you cannot use it.
Apple have removed all the useful diagnostics from the airport utility. There is next to nothing left. So you need to use the computer and its diagnostics to find signal levels in the location.

  • How to disconnect drive from airport extreme

    Hi,
I have a gen5 airport extreme and have a number of hard disks  connected to it.
What is the best /safe way to disconnect the drives so I can unplug them when I want to.
    Thanks in advance
    Richard

    Bob,
So just like unmounting an external disk mounted to my MAC.
Unfortunately there are a couple of other users of the extreme (PC and MAC), so I would have to unmount these as well.
The reason I ask is after searching the web there were some concerns expressed.
In  previous version of the extreme there was an option to disconnect all users, it is not there in the latest version, however there is an option to disable file sharing, which was provided as an option as well.
I did ring local Mac store and they did not know.
Based on your approach does this seem reasonable, to be run from my MAC
    1, Start Airport extreme utility
    2. You can see what wireless clients are connected to it by clicking the extreme icon in the utility
    3. if none of the other  users could be accessing the drives (eg IPOD,IPAD) then proceed to 5
    4. Any users that could be accessing the drives then go and close them down
    5. Unmount the AIrport Extreme from my MAC as you suggested
    6. Unplug disks.
May be disabling file sharing would do he same
I have a a couple of disks hanging off, so would be good to be able to unmount just one device from Airport, seems like a good enhancement for that utility, I reckon.
    Thanks for help

  • Airport Extreme (Fast Ethernet) + Airport Express (WDS) = disconnects

I have an Airport Express configured as a WDS, bridging a wired device (a small PC running Linux) to an Airport Extreme (Fast Ethernet). Security is enabled (WPA).
Frequently, the Airport Express disconnects from the wireless network and I have to reboot the thing by unplugging it. I have it set up to log to the PC, but I'm not sure what I should be looking for in the log.
Any guidance? I'd like to hold on to the Express, but I can't if it's acting flakey like this.

More than likely you are experiencing RF interference from other devices operating at 2.4 GHz. You can use a tool like iStumbler to see what other networks are visible in your area. Then you can configure your 2 base stations to use a channel which is as far as possible from the channels used by other networks.

  • Disconnect Airport Extreme PPPoE Connection

    Hello!
    I'm using the current configuration:
DSL Link -> SpeedStream ADLS modem -> Airport Extreme -> Computers
My Airport Extreme is configured to establish the PPPoE connection (the modem is bridged).
However I don't find an option to disconnect the PPPoE of the airport if I wish to.
    The given options are:
-Always on (dials and stays connected forever)
-Automatic (dials on demand, and disconnect if idle)
    -Manual (does nothing...)
I though this Manual option should have some sort of Connect/Disconnect Button or menu option, but I can find nowhere... Oddly enough, if this option is set, the AEBS doesn't connect and I never get an IP...
My question is: how do I manually connect/disconnect my PPPoE connection?
It can also be an Applescript funcion, whatever works...
    thanks!!
PS: I tried to bridge the AEBS and relay the PPPoE to Mac OSX 10.5.4... but it can't find the PPPoE server in this case.
PS2: Mac OSX 10.4 had an Utility called Internet Connection, which supposedly had an option to disconnect the airport... but 10.5 removed this app.

    One last try...
Configure a computer located near the DSL modem to connect wirelessly to your network and by Ethernet cable to a switch sitting between the DSL modem and the router. Remotely control this computer and use it to change the configuration in the DSL modem when you want to disconnect or reconnect your network from the Internet without restarting the router.
