Airport Extreme on 1ghz emac ?

I have a 1ghz emac whic his just under 4 years old.
Does anyone know if this is capable of taking an airport extreme card so that it can be wirelessly networked or how I can tell ?

Bontemps,
Where abouts in the world are you located? Cordless phones in the US have run in the 900 MHz, 2.4 GHz, and 5.8 GHz bands; I'm not aware of any location that uses 3 GHz phones. 2.4 GHz phones ccan interfere with WiFi networks. A commonly suggested workaround is to experiment with changing the WiFi base station's channel number to find one that minimizes interference.
(Or do what I've been going: keep using 900 MHz phones until the price of 5.8 GHz systems came down, and skip the 2.4 GHz phones entirely. I've noticed 5.8 GHz cordless dual handset answering machine / call ID models on sale for around US$35)

  • Airport Extreme card installed, eMac stuck on gray Apple screen at start-up

I just installed an Airport Extreme card on my eMac (USB 2.0). When I try to boot, it gets stuck on the gray Apple screen, with the spinning gray "spokes." The card is pushed as far as it will go into the slot, and the antenna is all the way in as well. When I take the card out, the computer boots up fine. I tried installing the software first, but it doesn't appear to be installed after it does the required restart for new software. I'm not sure if I have the software already...
At any rate, the biggest issue is that it won't boot past the gray screen. Any thoughts? (I have a version of Tiger, though I'm not sure exactly which because I'm sick of the un/install process at the moment, and am staring at the gray screen.)

Hi, I have a 1GHz eMac ATI and had a problem installing my Airport Extreme card as well. It would boot fine, but the card would not connect. It turned out that the card was not seated properly and maybe this is something for you to look at.
If you look at the Airport slot with the card and cover removed you will see the end of a black plastic guide bar on the right of the slot when viewed from the front of the machine. (Assuming the ATI eMac and USB 2.0 are the same in this regard) When the card and the aerial are fully seated home, the silver top of the aerial plug should be just about level with the front end of the black plastic bar, just a whisker or 2 sticking out. If it is more than this (more than say 1-2mm - 1/16th inch) then your card is not far enough in to be connected properly. Believe me I found this out through trial and error and there is not much difference between the right position and not.
It is not just a matter of pushing harder, you need to wiggle it slightly up and down and push firmly with 2 fingers, one on each side so that the force is evenly distributed. Mine needed just a smidgeon more force than what it took to slide the machine back - try it a little bit at a time. Put it up against a wall so it doesn't slide back, but don't apply excessive force. Part of the problem is that is hard to get your fingers in there to do the job.
    Hope this helps.

  • Airport extreme card for eMac Ati

Is it possible to make an Airport extreme card react like a Base statrion.

You can use Internet sharing and make your eMac act as a base station. Unfortunately it has no options and therefore isn't as useful as a dedicated base station.

  • Trying to Install Airport Extreme on 2003 eMac

Hi--the Airport Extreme Card that is compatible with eMac PowerPC G4 includes the CD installation disk for Airport Extreme 3.1.1. Obviously this is an ancient version. WHat should I do? Install 3.1.1 and then upgrade? Or will the card work with more recent versions?
    Luna Petuna

The drivers to access the AirPort Extreme Card are actually a part of the OS X operating system...and your Mac should "recognize" the new card once it's installed. The installation CD, typically, includes the AirPort administration utilities for AirPort base stations. In this case, if you're using the new 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), you will want to use the AirPort Utility that came on the CD with the base station itself.

  • How to install AirPort Extreme card in eMac?

I just recently acquired a 2005 G4 eMac (the top-of-the-line model with the SuperDrive and 160 GB hard drive), and I am trying to install an AirPort Extreme card into it. Apparently I think the instructions must differ from this one:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2596
Since this is for the older AirPort cards.
I pushed the card in all the way, logo facing downward, screwed in the antenna, etc., but the Mac still won't recognize it! What should I do to get it working?

Numerous eMac users who installed Airport Extreme cards in the past have brought up that the Extreme card is a very tight fit in the eMac Airport slot, especially compared to the original Airport card. Often, the card appears to be fully seated, but is actually some fraction of a millimeter out. After seating the card according to all the instructions, you have to push hard on the edge of the card to get it to really seat all the way, hard enough to just start to push the 50-lb eMac away from you (don't try this with the eMac on the very edge of the table or desk!). I ran into exactly that putting an Extreme card in my in-law's eMac, and I had already read other's warnings; that may give you some idea how firmly you really need to push the card once it feels as if it's seated.

  • Connecting eMac to Airport Extreme

I have a new desktop computer and a new Airport Extreme. I have moved my old eMac (operating system 10.3.9)downstairs. I am trying to pick up my WiFi from my Airport Extreme on my eMac. I can't seem to figure out how to locate it to connect to it (on the eMac). Can you please tell me where to go on my eMac to find my Airport so I can start logging in wirelessly to the internet.
    Thanks

Sorry, I can't remember very much about the older operating system that you are using, but you might try this:
Click the Apple icon at the upper left of the screen
    Select About this Mac
    Click More Info
Look down the list of items to see if you see any listing for AirPort or Network information. If you see AirPort listed, click to see more details on the right.
If you need to investigate further, you will probably do better to post in the 10.3.x Panther Forum for specific information about that operating system or the eMac Forum for info about available wireless cards, or how to enable a card if it is already installed.

  • Airport extreme card with G4 ATI emac (1GHZ)

I've purchased a previously used airport extreme card for my emac and installed it following the instalation guide on the apple website. But with the card inserted my emac wont boot. I just get the usual apple noise then a black screen and the caps lock lights up.
The card seems to be in properly as i got the "little click feeling" you have when something goes all the way in and the antena is also connected properly.
The emac boots up fine when the card is removed.
    any ideas?

Thanks, I think i'm going to send it back as i thought that it was the card at fault but thought i'd better check all options first.
The card was correctly installed and there's nothing wrong with my emac so it must be the card.

  • My eMac can't find installed airport Extreme card

    Hello everyone,
Having bought a netgear wireless modem for a wi-fi connection, I was told to install an airport extreme card on my eMac, which I did - several times. But the eMac says he can't find when I look for it, either in the internet setup or in the general information about the hard and software. I also installed the accompanying software. Why can this be ? Thanks for your advice!
    eMac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

It's an eMac (USB 2.0) model. I'm not certain I should try to push the card in more ? Are those cards defective frequently ?
Which eMac do you have? You can use KB 86325, eMac: How to locate the serial number
and identify your model to determine which model
    you have.
If your eMac is the "eMac (ATI Graphics)", "eMac (USB
2.0)", or "eMac (2005)" the AirPort Extreme card is the correct
    wireless card.
If your eMac is the "eMac", it requires the original
AirPort card and is not compatible with
    the AirPort Extreme card.
Assuming that your eMac is compatible with the AirPort Extreme card, one or more of
the following must be true if the eMac is not
    detecting the card.
    The card is not installed
    correctly.
    The card is defective.
    The
    eMac's motherboard is defective.

  • How do I find out how to upgrade eMac to airport or airport extreme?

    Hi,
I just bought a used eMac for our non profit theater ... it does not have the airport card. How do I find out if I need airport or airport extreme ... what do I need to do/know to upgrade to wireless
    Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Once you have identified your eMac, this page will tell you if Airport, or Airport Extreme is necessary:

If the original airport card is necesssary, Apple no longer sells this card, and you can find it here:

  • EMac - Airport or Airport Extreme

How do I know whether an eMac will take an Airport Extreme card or an original Airport card?

You can use the information in KB 86325, eMac: How to locate the serial number and identify your model to identify which eMac you have.
If it is an 'eMac' it requires the original AirPort card.
If it is an 'eMac (ATI Graphics)', 'eMac (USB 2.0)', or 'eMac (2005)' it requires the AirPort Extreme card.

  • Installing Airport Extreme 802.11n card in eMac killed keyboard?

    Hello,
I got an Airport Extreme 802.11n base station and card for my eMac (which I want to run in the next room from my new Mac Pro) from local Apple Store yesterday.
I read and followed the card installation instructions exactly. - This included installing the software from the CD.* - But as soon as I installed the card, my mouse and keyboard lost contact with the eMac. (Totally unresponsive to key commands or mouse movement.)
I shut down my eMac and my (new) Philips DSL modem: both of these have shown no symptoms up to the time of the card installation. I un-installed the card and waited 5-minutes. Modem and eMac came back normally and so did my keyboard and mouse.
Just prior to installation, I ran DiskWarrior and Repair Permissions. Also: I unplugged and "re-plugged" the USB keyboard and mouse before shutting down of eMac & modem - this made no difference.
    * I did notice: The documentation for the base station says the eMac needs Airport Setup Assistant 5.2. The eMac has Airport Setup Assistant 4.2. Yet - when I ran the installation program, it recognized and reported as updated Airport Setup Assistant 4.2.
Anyone have a solution to my loss of keyboard and mouse with card installed? Please - the Mac Pro arrives tomorrow.

    I'm answering my own question:
I got around to simply trying a second time to install the Airport Extreme card in this eMac. This time - I shut it down before starting installation of the card.
I suspected that shutting down would be a good idea - since it seems very likely that the System needs to load whatever drivers or extensions are needed to enable Airport. But the instruction either did not mention shutting down before installing the card or I missed mention of it in my haste to complete this and numerous other tasks before day's end.
Anyway - that seems to be what happened because bootup was normal and the mouse cursor and keyboard worked as soon as the desktop appeared.
Now - I proceed to setup the base station and test it on the eMac. If all goes as I hope - in 36 hours I'll have both this old eMac and the new Mac Pro living happily in their separate rooms.

  • Blank screen on my eMac after installing Airport Extreme Card

I just bought and installed (the right way, I checked) the Airport Extreme card on my eMac G4 desktop and at first the computer couldn't find it at all and after restarting several times, now the computer turns on but the screen is absolutely blank. I took the card out and restarted and it came on just fine. Can the card be affecting the screen? ANy help appreciated, I have no idea on this one.

This symptom is commonly seen when the Airport card is not FULLY seated into its socket. It can take a fair bit of force to do this.

  • Emac G4 problems with joining Airport Extreme network

I have an Airport Extreme network with two Airport Express base stations. The Airport Extreme is connected to the internet via ethernet/cable modem. The imac and the base stations work fine and I have no problem with my internet access on the imac, but I can't get internet access via the emac. It appears that the emac is connected to the network, but I get an error message ("Can't find server") when I try to access the internet. What have I done wrong?

  • Airport extreme for my 1 GHz eMac?

My eMac is a 1 GHz PowerPC G4 purchased November 2003. Can I put an airport extreme card in it? If I must use an airport card, is there a specific card and does anyone know a good vendor?

    Hello roam,
I just checked this thread because it's exactly what I'm working on now: getting my eMac (1 Ghz, ATi, combo drive, 10.3.9) connected using Airport Extreme.
I bought AE & a card for the eMac from the new Apple Store. But when I read the "Minimum Requirements" section of the instructions, it says that the eMac has to be running 10.4.x. Do you know if that's true?
BTW - I have installed the card which they gave me and it shows up on the eMac's System Profile. But when I checked using the "existing" Airport Utility, the app could not find the card. Could this be because of the need to upgrade to 10.4.x?
I should explain: I want the eMac on a wireless connection because I have it in one room and have my new Mac Pro connected (at the moment) directly to my DSL modem in the next room.
If I understand the setup directions, the Mac Pro can still be connected via Cat 5 Ethernet cable to the AE base station (which in turn is connected by Ethernet cable to the DSL modem). I just wanted to avoid the (possibly) unnecessary cost (of the OS upgrade) and will absorb the added cost of another Ethernet cable.
    Any advice? Thanks.

  • Can't get Airport Extreme to recognize my eMac.

I just invested in a MacBook and AirPort Extreme - I have the internet running on the MacBook but cannot get the older eMac (OS2.8) to recognize the wireless connection. I'm using a cable modem for internet connection. It looks like there is an AirPort Utility in the eMac but it doesn't recognize the MacBook as a base station. Would appreciate any help.

In the system profiler of the eMac there are two AirPort entries: AirPort Admin Utility and AirPort Setup Assistant (both files are from 2003). Does this mean that I have a wireless card?
No those are just applications used to configure one of Apple's base stations.
In System Profiler, look under Network and then click on "AirPort Card". Is there any information in the right column? If not, the wireless card is not installed.
If not, how can I reconnect the eMac to the cable service without shutting down the MacBook Base Station?
When you say "MacBook Base Station" I assume that you mean AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS). You can connect the eMac to the AEBS via Ethernet without shutting anything down.
