Airport Extreme card installed, eMac stuck on gray Apple screen at start-up

I just installed an Airport Extreme card on my eMac (USB 2.0). When I try to boot, it gets stuck on the gray Apple screen, with the spinning gray "spokes." The card is pushed as far as it will go into the slot, and the antenna is all the way in as well. When I take the card out, the computer boots up fine. I tried installing the software first, but it doesn't appear to be installed after it does the required restart for new software. I'm not sure if I have the software already...
At any rate, the biggest issue is that it won't boot past the gray screen. Any thoughts? (I have a version of Tiger, though I'm not sure exactly which because I'm sick of the un/install process at the moment, and am staring at the gray screen.)

Hi, I have a 1GHz eMac ATI and had a problem installing my Airport Extreme card as well. It would boot fine, but the card would not connect. It turned out that the card was not seated properly and maybe this is something for you to look at.
If you look at the Airport slot with the card and cover removed you will see the end of a black plastic guide bar on the right of the slot when viewed from the front of the machine. (Assuming the ATI eMac and USB 2.0 are the same in this regard) When the card and the aerial are fully seated home, the silver top of the aerial plug should be just about level with the front end of the black plastic bar, just a whisker or 2 sticking out. If it is more than this (more than say 1-2mm - 1/16th inch) then your card is not far enough in to be connected properly. Believe me I found this out through trial and error and there is not much difference between the right position and not.
It is not just a matter of pushing harder, you need to wiggle it slightly up and down and push firmly with 2 fingers, one on each side so that the force is evenly distributed. Mine needed just a smidgeon more force than what it took to slide the machine back - try it a little bit at a time. Put it up against a wall so it doesn't slide back, but don't apply excessive force. Part of the problem is that is hard to get your fingers in there to do the job.
Hope this helps.

  • How to install AirPort Extreme card in eMac?

I just recently acquired a 2005 G4 eMac (the top-of-the-line model with the SuperDrive and 160 GB hard drive), and I am trying to install an AirPort Extreme card into it. Apparently I think the instructions must differ from this one:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2596
Since this is for the older AirPort cards.
I pushed the card in all the way, logo facing downward, screwed in the antenna, etc., but the Mac still won't recognize it! What should I do to get it working?

Numerous eMac users who installed Airport Extreme cards in the past have brought up that the Extreme card is a very tight fit in the eMac Airport slot, especially compared to the original Airport card. Often, the card appears to be fully seated, but is actually some fraction of a millimeter out. After seating the card according to all the instructions, you have to push hard on the edge of the card to get it to really seat all the way, hard enough to just start to push the 50-lb eMac away from you (don't try this with the eMac on the very edge of the table or desk!). I ran into exactly that putting an Extreme card in my in-law's eMac, and I had already read other's warnings; that may give you some idea how firmly you really need to push the card once it feels as if it's seated.

  • Airport Extreme Card Install

I recently inherited a PowerMac G5 (approx. 5 years old) that does not register having an airport card. After purchasing an airport extreme card and opening the box to install it, I found a card already in the slot that does not look like the card I bought and is bolted in and cannot be removed. Does anyone know what this is and how I can remove it?

    Hi-
I found a card already in the slot that does not look like the card I bought and is bolted in and cannot be removed. Does anyone know what this is and how I can remove it?
From your machine profile (11,2) you have a dual core 2.0 GHz machine which uses a special Airport Extreme/Bluetooth card on a runway card:

Don't remove it unless you have the card from the kit that I linked. You can't use a regular Airport Extreme card.
    This is the card needed:

  • Airport extreme card for eMac Ati

Is it possible to make an Airport extreme card react like a Base statrion.

You can use Internet sharing and make your eMac act as a base station. Unfortunately it has no options and therefore isn't as useful as a dedicated base station.

  • Powerbook will not startup with airport extreme card installed

I have a 2 year old powerbook using 10.3.9 an djust of late when my airport card is in, The computer just sends me to the open Firmware right after i turn it on.when i type mac-boot it comes up with a broken folder icon. however when i take my card out i dont have a problem. is there a wa i can ues my computer and the airport at the same time? what do you think i should do.

it is a 867 mhz g4 with 256 mb ddr ram. 40 gb hd and
a combo drive. i hope that is helpfull.
This PowerBook requires the original Airport card, you can not use the Airport Extreme card in that PowerBook, any attempt to do so could result in damage to both the card and the PowerBook.
Either change the AE card for an original Airport or use a third party 802.11g card in the cardbus slot.

  • G4 Quicksilver stuck on gray Apple Screen

My trusty tower started showing problems with a spinning beach ball of death when I wasn't even using iPhoto 5. It happened with Mail. I had to do a hard shut off a couple or three times because I couldn't even get to the force quit menu by any means.
Now it won't move past the gray Apple screen. I've read about and followed through with checking all my connections, unplugging the power source and resetting PRAM. Prior to the Option, Command, P, R on start up I was able to eject the DVD tray. Now nothing on my keyboard seems to work.
I'm not saavy enough to open up my computer to reset the PMU or take the battery out. I've got an appointment at the Apple store tomorrow. Oh how I wish I had an Apple store in my town!
I hope it's an easy fix and I can bring my computer home with me so I don't have to make another trip.
I want to buy a new computer but not until I get another bill or two paid off.
If anyone has suggestions I should try before I head south, I don't have to be there until early afternoon.

Thanks for the links and your suggestions. The genius at the Apple Genius bar was unable to start my computer either until he hooked up an ex-hard drive. Once he started through his drive and saw all my contents still on my computer, he did the tests and nothing was flagged as a problem. He sent me home with instructions to re-install my Tiger OS.
When I got home and fired it up, it opened right to my desktop like normal. I had to run an errand so I just put it on sleep. When I got back I clicked on System Preferences to change my desktop and I got the spinning beachball of death. I'd already put my Tiger DVD in the tray. I had to do a hard shut down once again. When I powered back up it showed my OS DVD so I refreshed my memory on selecting the "Install and Archive" process.
Reinstalling Tiger is underway right now, then I will do the fsck and other recommended steps before opening or reconnecting anything else.

  • Airport extreme card install in 2008 mac pro

How do i install the airport extreme internal card in 2008 mac pro 2.8 dual?

Done, your link was ok!:) difficult to plug the tiny wires...on a Mac Pro early 2008, you must plug wire 1 and 3, the longer one at the bottom, the smaller one at the top....worked right away....p.s : take a little time to clean your Mac, you'll be amazed with the amount of dust !

  • G4 will power on, but is stuck on gray Apple screen

I've read several posts regarding starting-up the G4 but can't seem to find anyone with a similar issue. Before I had this problem, I installed a DVD to Mp4 converter program. I suspect that this could be the culprit but am not sure. And I'm not sure how to get back to my main operating system. On start-up the gray Apple logo appears, but no circle to indicate continued booting. Any ideas?
    Thanks!
PowerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)   Added USB 2.0 PCI Card

I'm having the same issue in that I get the gray apple. If I wait long enough, the screen eventually turns pale blue and then freezes.
I am unable to boot up in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key down, and when I use the DVD, the system boots up in OS-9 format making OSX unaccessible.
Could it be that I need to reinstall OSX software? If so,do I need to remove any existing programs first, and if so, how do I get "at" it, since I can't boot up into OSX.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Stuck on gray apple screen since 10.4.6 update

My G4 800MHz iMac will not get past the gray apple/spinning gear screen since updating to 10.4.6. I have tried booting into safe mode, reseting xxRAM (don't know the nomenclature), unplugging unnecessary peripherals, and power cycling, all to no avail. The screen stays up for a long time (like overnight), so its not that I'm not patient. Quick note: My 12" PowerBook took a little longer to boot after the .6 update, but seems to be working fine (upon which I write this plea).
    Help please.

    Hello K_OS:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
You might try a couple of things.
Run repair disk from your software install DVD.
If you have it on your other system, run the combo updater.
    Do an archive and install:

  • Stuck at gray Apple screen... mount point problem?

I'm trying to fix a MacBook for someone-- apparently it crashed in iMovie-- I assume the owner did a hard shut down by holding the power button, and now it won't get past the gray apple/spinning-gear screen. I tried starting up from an install CD, but I don't think it's the right version of OS X and it says it cannot be installed on the computer.
So I ran Disk First Aid on the drive-- it said nothing was wrong with the disk, but it did repair a few permissions. Still, nothing. I cleared the PRAM-- no luck. Took out the battery and put it back in, and still, nothing.
I did notice, though, that Disk Utility shows the HD to be named "VC"-- maybe it was renamed by the owner-- but the mount point is /Volumes/VC-- on my own working MacBook, the HD mount point is simply /.
Is that relevant to the problem? Can anyone think of anything else to try before I get the original OS install disk and see if I can archive/reinstall?
    Thanks!

What booting with the shift key depressed does is start you Mac in the safe mode.

  • No boot  with airport extreme card installed

a little history have had the no chime, no lower slot, memory problem fixed once under applecare. they replaced the logic board. much later the same problem has returned, but now i'm way out of warranty. so i removed the 500 mb sticks from both slots and installed a 1 gig in the upper slot. chime returned and computer normally until now. suddenly it will only boot if at all once in ten times to firmware and gives me the choice to type shut down or mac-boot. typing the latter also shuts down the computer. I learned that removing the airport card returns the computer to normal operation but with wifi of coarse. i can plug directly into the cable modem and internet then also works. i have tried all an known good airport with the same results. removing the airport card seems to be the only way to get it to boot. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Since there seems to be a hardware problem where your Powerbook won't work with even a good Airport card, you could take it out and install a separate wireless card in the card slot accessible from the outside of the Powerbook. If you google "cardbus mac wireless card" you'll find some choices.

  • Mac Pro Airport Extreme Card Install

So I've read just about every thread that I can find on this, and there's been so much discrepancy on which antenna wires to connect. I've tried just about every combination, and the card is showing up in the system profiler (en2), but when I click "Turn Airport On" in Network Preferences, nothing happens. At all. Anyone have any suggestions? Is there an airport update that I need to download? Thanks!

You probably don't need an update. But you have to enable it before you can turn it on. I suggest you do the following:
    * Reboot and clear PRAM (CMD-OPT-p-r at boot time).
    * Open the Network Preferences panel and highlight the Airport.
    * Click on the gear icon below the list and make the airport active.
    * Reboot.
This will probably solve your problem.

  • Bluetooth and Airport Extreme card install

Are these user installable options? I am getting a new Mac Pro as an insurance replacement for an older Mac wrecked in a flood. They will only replace with a new Mac if they purchase through their supplier at their reduced cost, but I get the feeling their new replacement will ship to me without these options preinstalled. Is there a way to buy them and install them myself? I have seen documentation for hard drive and PCI card etc. replacement, but not these options. Nor does they seem to be covered in the "working in your Mac" portion of the user manual.
If I can't do it myself, is it possible to have these installed by Apple, or are these options only available when initially ordering your Mac?

I bet most people would say, they could do the installtion thats easy, so true however, lets say you broke somthing on the mother-board would,nt that be so easy and there goes your warranty throught the window its now void, now clap yourself, or even smack yourself, can't believe you,ve even shock yourself. If you buy the parts Apple will do do the installation for about $45-$50 say you take it to the apple store, in the U.K. at the apple store its £25, for installation of Air-port, or air-port /blue-port is the same or a bit more, they done mine it was less than an hour wait, on a busy day, have fun with your new toy.
