Airport / Lynksis / Timewarner problem

Hi all.
Setup: Macbook aluminum 13" 2.4GHz + Linksys wireless router + Time Warner modem.
Problem: At least twice a day (when I wake up and when I got back from work) my internet connection is gone. The airport is still connected to the wireless router but I have no internet connection. In order to fix it I have to click the airport icon, turn it off and then turn it on again. Problem solved, but it is very (extremely) annoying having to do that at least twice a day.
This is somehow related to the screen saver or some other power saving mode, because it only happens when I am away from the computer for a long period. There are also about 20+ networks in my range and I read somewhere that this may also be an issue. I also heard something related to changing the channel but I am not sure if this is my case.
Any help will be very very welcome.
Thanks.

I have the same problem using an airport express and Time Warner, but I have to turn off and on the airport every 2 - 10 min. I've talked to both Apple and Time Warner and they both blame the other. Very annoying. Anyone know the solution?

    Airport Internet Sharing Problem
    My setup is:
Cable Modem -> Mac Mini --> PC Laptop
... with the connection between the mac mini and the PC laptop being the built-in mac mini airport using internet sharing.
Hi, I've been trying to set up Airport internet sharing with the mini, to no avail. It works off & on, but invariably the internet connections drop after about 10 minutes. The only way to get it started again, is to go into internet sharing, turn off internet sharing, then turn it on again. It will work for another 10 minutes or so (slow) after gong back to the PC laptop and reconnecting, then it chokes again.
I've tried the connection both with & without WEP, same behavior. I read somewhere that OS X only plays well with using Channel 1, so I tried that. No luck. Tried with and without Interference Robustness, no luck.
Tried with WEP on and using 40 bit hex keys using a "$" prepend in the mac as suggested on this web page:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20030803030354585
Same behavior, works for 10 minutes, then it chokes again.
Tried with & without the firewall.
Yes, personal web sharing is on.
The PC laptop works fine with any number of other wireless routers out & about town, at my girlfriend's house, so forth.
Any chance I have a bum mac mini wireless card or antennae or something? The reception strength on the PC laptop is good.
Just don't know what to make of it. So stupid, it seems like something pretty basic that ought to work.
Yeah yeah tell me to get a wireless router, but I'm not going to do that, that's one major reason I bought the mini in the first place and it would be nice if it worked as advertised.
    Any other suggestions?

    Works better now...
this is me again. A week ago or so, I noticed there was an automatic update to the wireless on the mac mini.
Since then the performance is much improved. My PC laptop connection to the mac mini no longer drops spontaneously.
Much improved! Thank you very much!
Yes, on occasion, when I leave and then come back to use the wireless, the laptop will not reconnect after multiple attempts; I have to turn of internet sharing and flick it back on again, but then it works all evening fore hours and hours straight with no problems.
    Thanks Apple! It's usable now!

  • Fix for Airport Wireless Connection Problem stating Self-Assigned IP and not wanting to connect in Lion OSX.

Fix for Airport Wireless Connection Problem stating Self-Assigned IP and not wanting to connect in Lion OSX.
Bought my girlfriend the newest Macbook Pro 13" and began experiencing problems with my wifi the moment we got home. Her Macbook would not connect to our home Wi-Fi while my old Macbook Late 2008 running Snow Leopard connected without a problem. Airport would say that it had a Self-Assigned IP address (168.x.x.x). Did not realize it was a Lion problem until after using her Macbook Pro and becoming jealous of the new OSX, I upgraded. Soon after I was unable to go online. Luckily I had my iPad 2 and I began to scoure the net for help. Ran into allot of suggestions but it was not until I tried the following all together was I able to share the good new, from my Macbook. Hope this works:
First go to Preferences > Network and click on the cog next to the + and - on the sidebar and click Set Service Order
         - Move Wi-Fi to the top and click ok.
         - Set location to Automatic
         - Click Apply
         - Click Advanced
         - Click the "-" on the selected Wi-Fi router you wish to connect to
         - Click Apply
         - Click Lock to Prevent Further Changes
Go to your Mac's harddrive, (Macintosh)
         - Go to Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration >
         - Delete "com.apple.airport.preferences.plist" file
    Turn off your computer
         - push and hold Option+Command+R+P
         - turn on computer
         - when the grey screen turns on you will hear the OS X "ON" sound (for lack of a proper term) and it will momentarily restart.
         - you will once again hear the "ON" sound, let go of all keys.
         - this resets your PRAM
Go to Preferences > Network > Advanced > + sign
         - click Choose a Network
         - Select your network and enter password
Viola!!! I tried this on my Macbook Late 2008 and my girlfriends new Macbook Pro 2010

No you are clearly mistaken. The Self-Assigned IP address problem exists on many Macbook Pro models, including the current model, which I mentioned as being the original computer with the problem. While my 2008 Macbook is older it was working perfectly on Snow Leopard and didn't suffer issues until switching to Lion. So clearly the problem exists on the operating system and not so much the hardware.
I called Apple Support  and they had no fix for the problem and told me that this would hopefully be addressed in a subsequent update. It wasn't until I came accross the answer after trying many different methods that I got both of the Macbooks to connect to my router. Otherwise I wouldn't or could not have been surfing the internet for the last 4 months.
    Cheers.

  • Airport Extreme Printing Problem with HP Deskjet.

Hello ... I wonder if any helpful folks can assist me with my printing problem? I am using Tiger on a new Intel imac with a HP Deskjet 960C. This printer is listed as having the latest drivers included within Tiger and works perfectly when connected via USB so my problem I guess is not with the software....I have disconnected everything and plugged everything back together again. I also deleted the printer from the printer list within the Printer Setup Utility application.... The imac recognisies the printer and upon pressing the print button everything feels as though its just going to work. The blue barber shop scroll appears but the printer fails to kick into gear and I get the big red exclamation mark appearing in the status box .... I would really love to try and sort this annoying error ... Any ideas? Thanks. Book G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Hello jds17. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Unfortunately, not all USB printers are compatible with AirPort base stations.
Take a look at one of these iFelix Unofficial AirPort Printer Compatibility links, depending on which AirPort base station you have:
o 802.11g AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) or AirPort Express Base Station (AX)
o 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn)
If your printer isn't listed, it doesn't necessarily mean it won't work, but simply that it has not been verified. iFelix also provides the following workaround for printers not on the list that would certainly be worth a try.
Also, you may find the following Apple article helpful.

  • New Airport Extreme, new problems.

Hi all. I have just purchased and installed a new airport extreme and am having some issues with it already. Last night during install, When it got to the end of the setup process, the computer screen said that the Airport extreme was to restart. Well, that seemed to take forever, and then the airport that was visable from the Airport utility disappeared. The Green light on the unit was on, indicating no problems, but I was not able to access the internet. I played with it for a while, and tried resetting and going through the set up 2 more times, with the same result. I had given up and was going to contact apple in the morning when suddenly my Ipad received a message from my friend who had sent the message about an hour before. I assumed that the internet was now working, which I confirmed with my Ipad and my Imac. All seemed ok. I even downloaded the Airport app for my I pad and could see the device from the screen.
Today, my Ipad's airport app could not see the device, yet the network was working. Is this typical?
Also, can you hide the SSID (network name). My last wireless router had this feature, which I thought was nice.
Last thing. I can't seem to print from my wireless printer any more. My previous router worked fine for this. It now says it is not connected any more. The network name and password are the same with this Airport as my last router, so I figured it shoud work fine. In the manual, it doesn't seem to mention wireless printing, only printers connected to the Airport with a USB. Does it only work that way?
Sorry for all the questions. If This thing is not going to co-operate, it will be returned to the store. I normally love Apples products, but this one has me scratching my head in doubt.

First you can block the SSID, you need to go into Airport Utility and click on wireless then click the wireless network options and make sure the Create a closed network is selected.  Regarding the iOS Airport Utility that could have sometimes.  On your printer the Airport Extreme has a USB connector that you can connect a printer to it.  It you want to add the printer to the network wirelessly then you may need to go in to you printer setup.

  • Airport extreme connection problem after adding computer to network

just added new imac to my network and for some reason my older imac {dome desktop} seems to have stopped recognizing the AEBS. the older imac was hooked up to the AEBS by ethernet and when i moved it across the room it fails to read the AEBS. I had installed the airport card a few mos ago and i know it worked...although most recently was ethernet connected. I cannot be certain the new computer addition is even related but seems to be. Have checked all the airport utility settings and see no issues. I did fool around with some network sharing features on the imacs so ? if that can create issue sharing the AEBS. Interestingly the affected imac does detect the AEBS in the utility app but times out when attempting to connect. also think i may have done recent AEBS download upgrade and see threads related to that as poss issue . have reverted back to older AEBS software without success. new ibook and new imac detect/connect without problem. Any thoughts out there??? thx for any help.

Is your AEBS configured to create an 802.11g compatible network? It must be for the iMac G4 to connect.
What channel is the AEBS configured to use?
If the AirPort Extreme card in your iMac G4 is from the US it can only use the channels between 1 and 11. If your AEBS is from somewhere else in the world it can use other channels which are not available for use with equipment from the US.
If your AEBS is not using a channel between 1 and 11, change it and see if your iMac G4 can connect.

  • IMac G5 bluetooth + airport + power supply problems - oh and the dvd drive

Yeah, seems like a lot is going wrong with my mac lately. I bought the iMac G5(no isight) model last year around july. I had some power issues (i.e. leaving the house with it turned on to come home and find it off) For the last year though that was all that was wrong. Once I had to reinstall OS X because it would not find the OS X harddrive during one of these power losses, but that was it.
Then about two weeks ago, I came home to a turned off iMac. I thought the power had gone out in my apartment, but the clocks were all right, and to my surprise the iMac would not turned on. Because I am not under warranty I searched online and found an extended exchange program for my emc model. (http://www.apple.com/support/imac/powersupply/repairextension/) I made an appt at the apple store and they replaced the power supply.
I got the machine back two nights ago and my bluetooth hardware wasn't recognized. And I now had a new "ink" system preference panel in the hardware section which aparently is some sort of handwriting recognition tablet. It ticked me off, but I just wanted to use my computer.
Well today I came home from work and my computer was acting funny. Everywhere I clicked brought up dashboard. This had never happened before and I had no choice but to force a shutdown. Powered it back up and poof, there goes my airport card. No hardware recognized. Now I have a 25 ft cable running the floor of my apartment. This was cause enough to call apple. I was told to make another apointment to bring the computer in. The guy made it sound like it was no big deal to lug a 30 lb bulky computer 40 miles and through a crowded mall. He also made no promises that the repairs would be covered under the exchange program.
I just wanted to hear any suggestions before I decide whether or not its worth it to bring in the computer. Nothing shows up in system profiler under bluetooth or airport. Should I just lie to the "genius" and tell them that my computer still shuts down randomly? I think that way they would at least replace the logic board (which I think is the problem) before telling me to sell my kidney and pay for repairs. I've tried reseting the SMU, and I looked at the bluetooth and airport cards to see if they had been accidently disconnected during the PS replacement. They are actually screwed into the logic board so I think their connections are efficient.
Oh and about the DVD drive. I have to use two cd's in order to burn a single disc. The first disc I put in the drive NEVER works. It spins for about 30 seconds then starts buzzing like blender and spits the cd back out. The second blank disc I put in USUALLY works, but sometimes it takes three discs. This problem has always been there since day 1, but I don't burn enough cd's for it to be an issue.
Thank you for listening to my gripes. I really don't think I'll make the mistake of buying the first issue of a model.

OK, first thing -to restore your bluetooth, shut down, unplug for a few minutes and then reboot. Thay usually brings the BT back. You should also repair permissions. Reset your SMU nd your PRAM as well.
Try those four things and please post back,

  • Belkin wireless modem and Airport Express lan problems

Let me preface my problem by stating the obvious - I'm not very technically proficient!
That said, I've had an AirPort Express wireless lan connecting three computers on my home/office network for the past 8 months without any problems at all. All machines on the network have been able to access the internet via a Thomson SpeedTouch 530 ADSL1 modem that connects via an ethernet cable to the AirPort Express. No problems.
The network consists of my G5 iMac (ALS), my husband's Mac mini and my Sony VAIO laptop (XP Pro SP2).
I should also mention that half-way between my office and my husband's office there is a second AirPort Express that 'boosts' the signal to his office.
I recently changed ISPs to a provider that offers the faster ADSL2+ service. This meant that I had to get a new Belkin ADSL2+ modem. This is my problem. I cannot connect my AirPort Express network to the internet using the Belkin modem. The Belkin modem connects without any problem if I just have it connected via ethernet to my iMac but that's not what I want to do.
My existing AirPort details are -
    IPv4 Address: 10.0.1.3
Router 10.0.1.1 (this is the SpeedTouch 530 modem)
    Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
I thought I could change the new modem's address(?terminology?) from 10.1.1.1 (which is how it came) to 10.0.1.3 and that everything would work but it doesn't.
Belkin tech support said 'the problem is with your AirPort Express' (what else would they say)?
Do I have to keep the 10.1.1.1 and change my AirPort addresses? Or should I try to set up a new network?

  • Airport extreme configuration problem with Netgear DG834PN

    Good morning,
I have a problem. I bought an AEBS via the WAN port to connect to my Netgear DG834PN.
I turned off the WiFi on the Netgear, I connected the AEBS in bridge mode, but with the iMac and other iDevice there are no problems.
On the contrary my Acer Travelmate (Win 7) does not want to connect ... fact is connected, the card tells me that is connected and has access to the internet, but does not show mewhen I browse any web page, Skype does not connect ...
Do you have suggestions for configuring the Netgear or dell'AEBS?

The Windows Firewall may be blocking the connection attempt. I have not used Windows 7, but on an XP machine, the Firewall settings are in the Control Panel. Check to see if this might be the case so you can "Allow" an "Exception".
The anti-virus software may also be blocking the connection. You may need to turn it off for the configuration, then turn it back on.
It will often help to try to configure the device using Ethernet, not wireless. Connect a spare Ethernet cable from your PC to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme. Restart both the PC and AirPort Extreme, then open AirPort Utility again.
If still no luck, click the AirPort Utility File menu at the upper left hand corner of the screen and select Configure Other. Enter 10.0.1.1 into the address box and "public" (without the quotes) in the password box.

  • Airport extreme A1143 problem with mountain lion

what airport extreme software version works with mountain lion

I have an A1143 here and it works just fine with AirPort Utility 6.2 in Mountain Lion.
It also works fine with AirPort Utility 5.6, which I have on another Mac here.
All you can really do is try a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Extreme to clear out all the old....and possibly conlficting.....settings and try to configure it again.
If you continue to experience problems, I would suspect a less than perfect AirPort Extreme....although I am sure that the seller claimed it was perfect.

  • Airport Extreme Connection problem with new MacBook

    Help-
For the past 2 years, I have had no problems with my Airport Extreme. My MacBook Pro (2006), My wife's iBook G4 and two AirPort Express units used as remote speaker connections have been rock solid. Both iPhone and one iPod touch work like a charm.
I just got my wife a new MacBook and since it came in and was connected, my Air Port Extreme has been nothing but a problem, requiring a hard reset every couple of days. As long as that MacBook is not connected, everything is fine.
Anyone have any ideas? Only the MacBook is using 802.11n. It is so frustrating, that my wife want to use her old iBook so if this can't get fixed, the MacBook is going back to Apple.

    Welcome to the discussion area!
From your description, it sounds like the wireless communications between the AirPort Extreme and your wife's MacBook are picking up some sort of wireless interference from another source such as a cordless phone or another nearby security system.
I suggest that you try different channels for your wireless to see if you can find a setting with less interference. To do this, you would:
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the AirPort Extreme and then click Manual Setup below
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Look for the Radio Channel or Channel setting
You may need to hold down the option key as you click on the selection box to display all available choices.
Start at the highest channel and work your way down, or start at the lowest and work your way up.
Click Update at the lower right of the window to save your current setting and the AirPort Extreme will restart in 20-25 seconds.
It will take some time to find the optimum channel for your network, so proceed slowly and take a few notes as you go.

  • Airport Extreme Utility problem with Vista (works with XP, MacOS)

    Hi,
I just setup a new Airport Extreme network at my house, and most things are working fine. I have wirelessly connected at various points an Airport Express (using WDS), a MacBook Pro (OSX) and an IBM Thinkpad. I have several wired machines as well.
My problem: The wired machine I use to configure and setup everything is a Vista Ultimate machine. Unfortunately, the Airport Utility won't connect to the Airport Extreme (or Airport Express for that matter) from Vista. The utility works fine from XP or OSX, but not from Vista. Note that I'm using this in a wired capacity. The Vista machine is directly connected to the Airport Extreme, while several other machine are connected through a GBit switch.
Any help would be much appreciated? Is this a Vista security problem or an Airport Utility problem with Vista?

It's most likely a security issue with Windows Vista. Vista has the ability to set "compatibility modes" for applications.
    Try:
    1. right mouse clicking the Airport Utility's .exe file.
    2. Click the Compatibility tab. Change the Compatibility mode to Windows XP (Service Pack 2).
    3. Now go down to "Privilage Level" and check the "Run this program as an administrator"
Apple never tells you this but you must connect to the Airport Extreme wirelessly. Now run the Airport Utility. You should see it.

  • Airport Extreme printing problem w/ HP7 410 all-in-one

    I just purchased a HP officejet 7410 all-in-one.
I can print using USB cable connected to printer.
However, I CANNOT print connecting the USB cable from printer to Airport Extreme and using Bonjour printing? The print job spools than just stops?
    Any help would be appreciated....
macbook pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hello HevnLgh,
Thank you for your input. I tried to follow your instructions but had trouble right from the start. I got to HP uninstaller and clicked continue but there was no printer listed. It just said "device" and uninstall was greyed out. I decided to just continue so I reset the printing system and repaired the  disk permissions.
It took me a couple of tries to reinstall the printer from the Apple website because at first it couldn't find the device to add so I tried using the IP address on the next tab and that seemed to do something but it still wouldn't print. The printer was found after I  went back and tried again and everything seemed to work this time (whew).
I tried the update procedure on the printer itself and it still can't connect with the server, but the original problem with the duplicate copy on shut down seems to have resolved itself.
The bottom line is my printer is working like it's supposed to (for now anyway)  and I didn't get two copies of my printout so thank you again for your help.  It's good to know I can go somewhere for help when I have a problem.

  • Hard drive and airport extreme connection problem.

    Hi folks,
I have an airport extreme and a WD 1TB pasport for mac hard drive. I had it connected for ages and used it to load movies onto to keep my macbook empty. I had no problems accessing it wirelessly through Finder until today when i configured the extreme to run at 5ghz. When i try to connect now, it tells me that the ip address is wrong but im connected to the extreme for internet. Any clues or solutions?

your Airport Extremes ip address is the red square, Then your going to copy that
So in the red box instead of Http:// we are going to put ftp:// then you should get
a pop up say connecting to server and I hope you do get that.

  • Airport Time Capsule Problems Since Snow Leopard - Loses Connections

I did a straightforward install of Snow Leopard on the iMac 24 and it went fine. I have very few apps on it so nothing weird running to cause two issues:
1 - Time Machine backups to a Time Capsule have become slow and unreliable. Also, even 10-100 MB file transfers to a MacBook Pro 17", also on Snow Leopard, took the longest time.
2 - The Airport/WiFi icon will often go from being a static icon with full signal to one in which each curved concentric level bar flashes one by one up from the bottom dot to the topmost arc, and then back down, and back and forth. This often happens in the middle of Time Capsule backups. Holding down the mouse on the icon shows my network still connected, but the backup fails, and any web page attempted will also report there is no network.
I wonder if others have had similar problem(s).
    Imran

I am also having very strange problems with 10.6.1 and TC. The network disconnects for no apparent reason, frequently. It seems to be tying up both of the phone lines too, because once the TC reconnects to the network, the telephone no longer works (it says "line busy" and remains that way until and unless I unplug the TC). Plugging directly into the cable modem works fine, no problems at all with the telephones or with the network disconnecting at random. All three macs on my home network (macbook, MBPro and iMac) are updated to 10.6.1. At first I thought the problem might have been the modem itself but it works fine; it's only when the TC is connected that the weirdness happens.
