Airport no longer works with my MacBooks. Help an old lady get wireless again!

First, I have to tell you that I'm as dense as granite when it comes to technology, so please talk to me in the simple terms you'd use with a dazed higher primate. Assume that I know nothing.
My story: I have the world's oldest MacBook Pro and am also using a new MacBook Air. I had a new Airport base station that was working fine with the MacBook Pro until I moved two years ago. I know nothing was dropped or mishandled, because I moved the electronics myself. But when I set up stuff in the new house, with Airport in a spare room and using the laptop in my bedroom where I have little room for anything but me, the MacBook would no longer recogize the Airport.
I tried moving Airport into the same room, thinking there might be something wierd with the walls of the house, but still no dice.
So I've been wired to the Comcast modem ever since. I trip over cables so often, I can do it in the dark.
Things are getting complicated now, because I've added a printer/scanner. Since I can't use it wirelessly and don't wish to trip over the cable every time I stand up, I hardly ever use the thing. Also, I'm shopping for a new TV and have dreams of being able to connect it with the Mac for watching movies, etc. The thought of using more cables makes me sad.
BTW, I'm currently using a borrowed MacBook Air, circa 6 months ago. It doesn't recognize Airport either. Airport is currently sitting in its box, bored and depressed.
Since nothing I own is under warranty any longer, I'm looking for free advice here instead of paying Apple by the hour.
Two questions:
(1) the ****? How do I get wireless again?
(2) Is Airport interchangeable with other wireless modems, like the one Comcast offers me?

When you connect your MacBook Pro to the Comcast modem using its Ethernet cable, you are establishing the same sort of connection with it that would be used by your AirPort sitting in the box. The modem does not care what is connected to it, but it can connect to only one device at a time. Most of them "remember" that device as long as it is powered up, and will refuse to communicate with anything else.
So the first thing to do is power down the modem. Unplug it. Then, connect your AirPort's WAN port to it (Extreme or Express, whichever one you have) and then power them both up. With any luck your MacBook Pro might just connect wirelessly like it used to in your last home.
If it does not, you probably need to reconfigure the AirPort Base Station again as if it were new. To do that, "hard reset" the AirPort Base Station by pressing its tiny reset button and holding it depressed long enough for its LED to flash rapidly. Then, the LED will glow solid amber for a moment or two, then it will begin to flash slowly. When that occurs select its network in your Mac's Wi-Fi menu. Its name will be "Apple Network nnnnnn" where nnnnnn = a code unique to your base station. Select it.
Then, launch AirPort Utility - it is in your Utilities folder - and it will detect that your AirPort base station has been reset. Click the Continue button, answer the questions, and it will reconfigure the AirPort to those settings. The questions should be self-explanatory. When you are finished you will be prompted to restart the AirPort.
The next step confuses people, because after restarting the AirPort Base Station the network name that you had been using to configure it immediately ceases to exist. AirPort Utility may as well just sit there forever so just quit AirPort Utility. You have to manually select the network you just created by selecting it in the Wi-Fi menu again.
If you run into problems and need more help, meaning you must communicate using the Internet again, just remember the first paragraph - power down the modem whenever you change what is connected to it. Make it a habit.

  • Apple 23" HD Cinema Display no longer working with new Macbook Pro

I bought a 23" used HD Cinema display the other day along with the ADC-DVI and DVI-Mini Display adapters. I had it hooked up and it was working perfectly for 3 days. Today my wife tried to connect her Macbook accidentally via the USB that is part of the ADC-DVI adapter which didn't work (why is that USB there anyway?). Then when she went to connect the external display back to my Macbook Pro it did not wake up after being connected. I have tried resetting the PRAM on the MBP and have disconnected and re-connected all connections but nothing will get the display working with the MBP anymore. When I connect and disconnect the mini-display plug into the MBP the MBP flashes the blue screen as it appears to be reacting, but that's it. I can't detect any display when I go into the display system preferences. Does anyone know how I can get the Apple Cinema display working again? Thanks for any help.

There are couple of long threads in the display section about problems with the power supplies on the 23" HD DVI. See this one for instance: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17981683#17981683
Mine one day just wouldn't turn on -- connected to an old G4 MDD and the Mini -- a bit of fiddling it would occasionally start up, sometimes not. Similar to what you described, the Macs would see it in System Profiler, but it just wouldn't turn on.
Based on that thread, I figured the problem was mostly likely the power supply. A local authorized repair place didn't have a spare for me to try, but the tech sniffed it and mentioned it the burnt electronics smell. LOL, I sniffed it and sniffed the power supply for my 20" DVI Cinema display -- indeed a weird smell.
Based on that thread, I decided to bite the bullet and buy a beefier 150" power supply for the 30" Cinema display, which Apple says in compatible with the 23". See: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2803
I hooked it up, crossed my fingers, and it fired up right away. It's been working fine for about 3 months now. Cheaper than buying a new monitor.

  • ICal sync from iPhone 3G no longer works with both MacBooks?

    Hi Group:
I've got an iPhone 3G, a previous gen MBP and a white MB, all running the latest software updates. For the past several months I have been able to enter iCal events on my MBP, sync to the iPhone using iTunes, and then sync the iPhone to the MB. For some reason I can't guess, that no longer works, and iCal events are not being transferred from the iPhone to my MB iCal app. Did this happen with the iPhone 3.0 software update (the timing seems about right)? I called Apple Care last night and they said only a .Me account would return that functionality, but denied this had anything to do with the iPhone 3.0 update. In fact, the rep said it never should have worked in the first place.
FWIW, here's the error messasge iTunes generates:
"iTunes could not sync calendar events to the iPhone because an error occurred while sending data from the iPhone."
That's the exact wording, and it doesn't really make perfect sense, either. So, is there a workaround for this, or a third-party app, perhaps? Did Apple make this change just to sell more .Me accounts? Finally, is there maybe an automated way to sync the iCal events between the MBP and MB across my Time Capsule network? Thanks in advance for any ideas.
    Dean

****, that was a brilliant solution. To be clear, what was happening is that I could no longer sync calendars from the iPhone to the MB, but never lost that ability on the MBP. I would not have guessed your solution, as I've never even opened the iSync app, and had no idea it was in any way involved. Thanks, and I wonder if there's some way Apple could add this solution to their database for the Apple Care reps?

  • AirPort no longer working with Comcast

I have had my Airport Extreme, working great with my cable modem for the last year, but a few night ago it decided to stop working. I get a error that it can not get a IP address.
If I wire direct from the cable to my imac the cable works fine.
If I go from cable to Airport I can not connect to the cable via Wifi.
I have reset the Airport, etc. and it still does not work.
Any ideas on how to get this going would be great.
    Thanks

    Joe,
There were a couple of things that lead me to fixing it.
First, I did call comcast, because it did appear that they were blocking systems coming off the wifi. The stated they do not do this, but I have a feeling they may have reset something after talking to them, because information started to propagate to the search domains field.
Second, I connected directly to the cable box with my imac, and got the correct DNS Server names. I did a hard reset on the wifi and unplugged the cable and wifi box.
On setup my first DNS server address we my incorrect on so I was able to put the correct one in.
The grayed out one for me was correct.
I hope something in there help you out.

  • Airport no longer works with WPA, WPA2 or WEP after 10.4.8 update.

    A little disappointing.
After updating to 10.4.8 (I first did Software Update, then read here that the downloaded is safer, so I downloaded, repaired permissions, rebooted, installed 10.4.8 again from the download, rebooted, repaired permissions once more)
Now when I try to use the Airport on my MacBook Pro 17" I cannot connect to my wireless router (DLINK-524) with any security turned on (WPA, WPA2 or WEP). The signal strenght flashes on full (I'm close to the router) and off and I do not connect.
Any clue how to fix this?
    Macbook Pro 17" Mac OS X (10.4.7)
    Macbook Pro 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I just did that - I tried a rollback with an "archive and install", and then stopped at 10.4.7. My problems persist... I'm actually quite amazed! Qurious if a clean install would solve the issue, but not curous enough to try. The way i see it, a re-install (even doing an "archive thingy") should include resetting all drivers. Well, either I am wrong and they are saved along with user settings - or else your explanation seems the only viable one; that there was a firmware upgrade included in this install. I admit - I did NOT read any readme. On the other hand, I tried my first install using the normal update.
    =)
Anyway, after deleting all system prefs, deleting and reconnecting networks, repairing disk permissions and key rings, deleting keyrings etc. etc. - doing it all over again in different orders etc., I tried "arhive and install" back to 10.4.7. When that doesn't solve it, I give up. I have now opened my network - disabled crypt, and settle for simple connection control on MAC adresses. That works.
I would REALLY appreciate a fix, ladies and gentlemen on Apple. I mean really as in I am gonna egg your house if you don't give me...

  • Aperture and DVD Player no longer work with NVIDIA 330M, help!

I recently got my computer back from the Apple Store, had the display switched because the glass kept falling off.
Anyways, since getting it back, I noticed DVD Player doesn't work anymore, it gives me:
    There was an initialization error
A valid video device could not be found for playback. [-70017]
And when I try to start Aperture 3.3:
    Error
The installed graphics card does not meet the minimum requirements for Aperture.
    I have a mid-2010 MBP i5 2.4Ghz with 8GB memory, running OSX 10.7.4.
    Things i have tried:
    Reset PRAM
    Reset SMC
Boot into recovery mode and fix permissions
    Boot into 32 bit kernel
    force fsck
Create new user and try from that account
Also my video conference software, Jabber gives an error and quits too.  Its something with the video.
Switching to Intel HD video, everything works fine.  Only with the NVIDIA 330M do I get this error.
Does anyone have any idea what this may be or what I could try?

I'm having exactly the same problem. Additionally, the DVDs I make aren't recognized by other Macs I've tried. All the Preferences are set correctly.
My dvd player no longer reads commercial movies or a
dvd project I just burned with it. Disks no longer
show on my desktop when they are inserted. When I
got to dvd player and manually press play it reads
    "not Permitted" for both.
The burner does work in as I played the dvd in my
    home dvd player.

HELP!!!! My Hotmail no longer works with Safari v. 5.0.6 and my Imac Leopard operating system 10.5.8.  Please help me with any suggestions on what to do.  Thank you.  I cannot find any new downloads for Safari that work with Leopard.  The newest ones only work with Lion.  My Firefox browser still works though but I would rather use Safari and cannot access any e-mails or send any e-mails via Safari.  This happened about 3 weeks ago and I thought it was just a glitch on Hotmail's site.  Now I realize Hotmail must have released an update that no longer works with Leopard 10.5.8.  PLEASE HELP ME!!!!  Thanks to anyone and everyone who reads this and attempts to help me.  I do not know what to do....

    Hi Sue,
What exactly happens when trying Safari?
They did change it to Outlook recently, but while not pretty, I can access mine with Safari 4.0 still...
You can also set it up in Mail so you don't need a browser at all if you want.

  • ISync no longer works with MacBook

I imported all data from my old Powerbook G4 into my new Intel MacBook 2.16 bu iSync no longer works with my phones. It starts the process then stops abut halfway through with an error message. I have tried all the solutions proposed in the discussion but the problem remains the same.

Fortunately Sony Ericsson phones are my particular area of expertise!
This is more than likely caused by some corruption in either one of your Contacts or one of your Calendars.
I have made a web-page with step-by-step instructions to go through to determine the cause of sync errors, and then what to do to resolve them:
    http://mobile.feisar.com/isync_tips.html
That page usually solves 99% of iSync issues.

There's a new driver bundle for OSX 10.6 that you might need to install, the HP link seems to be failing at the moment but there's a version of it here: HP_Installer_Scanjet_v2.4.3_Ph4.dmg
There's a piece on the HP Forum about it here (some folks have problems installing ...)

My Imac late 2012 running Yosemite does not recognise my Huawei 3g usb modem. itried to install Java bt still it does not although the same modem works with my MacBook pro . any help please

    Hey there mbarikiwa,
If your iMac still has not recognized the usb modem, I would use the troubleshooting for Yosemite USB issues in the following article:
OS X Yosemite: If a USB device isn’t working
If the device is connected to a USB hub:
Make sure the device and the hub are the same speed. Connect USB 3.0 SuperSpeed devices to a USB 3.0 SuperSpeed HUB, USB 2.0 Hi-Speed devices to a USB 2.0 Hi-Speed hub, and so on.
If the device doesn’t have a power cord and is plugged into another USB device that doesn’t have a power cord:
Try plugging the device directly into your computer’s USB port  or into a USB device that does have a power cord. You might need to disconnect and reconnect the other device as well, if it has stopped responding.
If you have many devices connected to your Mac:
Disconnect all USB devices except the device you’re testing, an Apple keyboard, and an Apple mouse. Make sure that the device is connected directly to the computer, and that any hubs or extension cables are disconnected. If you can use the device now, the problem may be with one of the other USB devices or hubs you had connected to your computer. Try reconnecting them, one by one, to your computer. When you find the device causing the problem, review its documentation for further troubleshooting steps.
Verify that the device appears in System Information:
Choose Apple menu > About This Mac. In the window that appears, click Overview, then click the System Report button to open System Information.
In the window that appears, see if the USB device is listed below Hardware in the Contents list. If the device appears but does not work, review the device’s documentation for further troubleshooting steps.
    Restart apps:
Quit and restart any apps that use the device.
    Restart your Mac:
    Choose Apple menu > Restart.
    Check your device’s USB connection
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • I have a Dell v715w printer and can't make it work with my macbook, need help

I have a Dell v715w printer and am having difficulty making it work with my MacBook Pro, need suggestions.

    Hi,
The printer do support AirPrint (the HP Deskjet 3525 is part of the 3520 Series).
Make sure your printer connected to the same router as your iPad and it shold be listed..
Be aware that you need iOS 4.2 or higher and your router should support Multicasting for AirPrint to work..
If the printer isn't listed please clarify your router brand and model, some routers don't offer Multicasting or have the protocol disabled by default.
