Airports using PoE stop responding after a few days.

We have several Airport Extreme Base Stations distributed throughout the district and connected to Cisco Catalyst 3560 PoE switches. These switches are providing power to our Base Stations via their PoE capabilities. The problem we're having is that after a while, these base stations will stop responding and drop off my network such that I can no longer ping them and people in the areas can no longer use them for connectivity. The way I've been able to correct this issue, so far, is to instruct the switches to remove power from the interfaces the base stations are connected to, and then reapply power. The base stations, effectively, reboot themselves and all is well for the time being.
Naturally, I don't want to keep having to reboot these base stations every time they stop responding. Does anyone have any ideas on how I could fix this issue?

We had similar huge problems with a large AirPort installation over two separate schools (abou 100 total). We tracked it down to newer AirPort Base Station firmware: anything later than 5.5.1 (including the new 5.7) will eventually cause the AirPort Base Station to go unresponsive. High traffic or a large number of workstations connected to the base station make the problem happen faster.
We solved this problem completely by reverting to v5.5.1 firmware everywhere. They've all been rock solid since.
We tested v5.7 firmware when it came out, but it exhibited the same problem.
Apple is aware of the problem at the highest levels of engineering and is supposedly working on a fix. Here's hoping for v5.8...

    After importing workstations, remote control works fine. After a few
    days, remote ping might work but NOT remote control. Sometimes even remote ping errors out with the message that the "REMOTE MANAGEMENT

    IS NOT RUNNING"(when it appears it is). If I stop and start the
    "novell
    wuser agent" service, then I can usually remote control the
    workstation
    again. Occasionally, however, I get the message "The Remote
    Management
    agent was unable to locate the workstation in NDS". At which point I
    have
    to delete the workstation object and re-import the workstation to be
    able
    to remote control it again.

    I have a different server for each site(city) hosting the import
    services. There is only one variable allowed in DNS so all sites
    would
    try to get services and register to the same server.
    Using the container login script for each site to set the /s parameter
    was
    easier than changing the registry setting for each
    workstation...especially if that server changed. This way I would
    only
    have to change it one place.
    If the workstation has already been registered and imported AND I can
    remote control it, does it NEED to find the import server again if it
    hasn't been rebooted since the last time I remote controlled it?

  • Wiki does not respond after a few days

    Hi,
    I have set up the wiki server on a newly bought mac mini (winter 2011) running latest version of Snow Leopard. Authentication is performed through remote Open Directory and Active Directory servers. No third party software installed.
    Everything works just fine for a few days (1-2 weeks), but then the server starts to respond VERY slowly. This looked like a memory problem to me (busy processor, low ram, etc), but a quick look at the Activity Monitor shows me nothing's wrong there.
    I can reboot and it will go on for another few days, but I wonder if this does not hide another problem.
    I'm pretty sure this is a wiki related issue, because we have identical machines, but the ones without web services run smoothly without need for an occasional reboot. Also, I did many fresh install, and the problem always came back.
    Anyone has experienced something similar?

    This is quite a common problem. The usual cause is inadvertent use of the "mute speech" command via the Trackpad Commander.
    To toggle VO speech on and off using the Trackpad, tap twice with three fingers simultaneously.
    Otherwise, you can summon up the VoiceOver command menu using VO-H-H, type "PAR" (French for "SPEech" and press Return.
    For the Zoom problem, open System Preferences —> Universal Access and make sure you tick the "Zoom follows the keyboard focus" checkbox.
    You might also want to experiment with the Screen Image radio buttons lower down the window:
    • Continuously with pointer (some people find this makes them seasick);
    • Only when the pointer reaches an edge (usually preferred); and
    • So the pointer is at or near the center of the image (some people like this).

  • Remote stops working after a few days

    I've recently run into a problem at one of my sites. Nothing has been
    changed on the Netware server, and nothing was changed in ZenWorks,
    but I
    get a message stating, "The Remote management agent was unable to
    locate the
    workstation in NDS"
    The server is running eDir 85.27c, NW5.1 SP5, with Zenworks 3.2 sp1.
    I
    checked for NDS synchronization issues, and there are none. The
    server has
    a replica of the partition, and DSRepair comes up clean.
    If I delete the workstation and unregister it, then allow Zen to
    re-register
    and import the workstation, it will work again, for a few days.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • LDAP Stops working after a few days

    So I configured LDAP using the built in method and it works great. I then have a custom user_in_group function that checks against the ldap. Both of these work perfect for a while, after a day or so though, they stop working all together. Rebooting the server solves the problem, but seems a bit drastic on a nightly basis.
    Does anyone know where to even start looking? I can't find any error logs pertaining to LDAP authentication or authorization.
    Here is the user_in_group sub in case its doing something bad, it is authorizing agianst a local Active Directory server. We have two AD servers and changing the IP address here doesn't make it start working, only rebooting does. I have a feeling that there is a limited pool of LDAP connections and somehow they are getting used up and eventualy there are none left. No errors appear on either AD servers logs or anywhere i can find on Oracle. BTW I'm running oracle on RedHat Enterprise and it is oracle 10g with HTML DB 1.5

    Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

    you can purchase a replacement pair of grey installation DVDs for your MacBook Pro from either Apple or iFixit. If Startup Manager is only showing an OS X Installer volume, then it sounds like the Mavericks installer had a problem midway through its installation process. To fix this, you’re going to need to erase your internal disk and reïnstall your original version of OS X from the grey Mac OS X Install DVD, use Software Update  to get it back to 10.6.8 (presuming that your MacBook Pro originally came with Snow Leopard), and then restore from Time Machine.

    I'm not trying to belittle your issues; you're certainly having them and I know first hand how annoying an intermittent AirPort issue can be. (In fact, mine was due to an AirPort driver bug that no one else seemed to suffer from.)
    The single best diagnostic you could do is take your system running 10.5.7 to an Apple Store, and try using their in-store network.
    If your machine performs flawlessly, it may be a router issue.
    If your machine has connectivity issues there, it may be a hardware problem with your machine.
    There have been numerous people in multiple threads over the years who swore that an update was buggy because things used to work, but returned later to sheepishly admit that they took their machine in, a problem was found and fixed, and now their Mac works flawlessly with the newer software.
    But simply reinstalling 10.5.5 in no way means the explanation of how firmware bugs may be at play here is incorrect.
    In the context of that explanation, all you've done is possibly reinstall software that asks to add "2 + 3."

  • Admin console stops responding after a while

    We just upgraded to Weblogic 8.1.5 . We are having difficulties with the Administrator console. It stops responding after a while. There is no pattern. The restart seems to fix it but restart is very slow as it takes around 2 min to detect each server. So we have to wait for around 16 min (since we have 8 servers) for it to be operational again.
    Has anyone seen this problem and can suggest a resolution to this problem.

    I've never seen this and we've been running 8.1.5 for a while. Have you tried dumping threads to see what the admin server is doing? On UNIX, run 'kill -QUIT <admserv_pid>'. Can't remember if/how this can be done on Win32. I believe Console requests use the weblogic.admin.HTTP execute queue and it only has two threads. Could be that something is blocking those threads leading to this.
    I would also look into why your admin server takes 2 minutes to discover your managed servers. That seems unseemly long to me. Mine takes a few seconds at most. Since the Console does cause the admin server to talk to the managed servers, these two things might be related. Maybe you've got some kind of network/DNS lag that could be eliminated.
