Alignment question

In a multiple question form, when I move the separator between the question and the answer section of the item, it moves the divider for all of the other items on the form.  Is there an alternative to this?  If so, how can I just change the alignment of one of the questions / answers?

The first fields on each row share the same label width across the form by design. The other fields on the row have their own label witdh.
You can move the labels to be on Above as opposed to be on the left or you can try the trick I mentioned in this thread : http://forums.adobe.com/message/5754311#5754311
Hope this helps

• JMenuItem icon/Text verticle alignment question

hello,
can some one help with my question:
I got 5 JMenuItems in a JMenu, some JMenuItems have icon, some not, I want to align them with icon and text in a neat format, like those in Sun's Forte IDE's Menu:
but I can only do it like this:
icon1 open..
save As..
icon2 new..
Exit..
(above each line represent a JMenuItem, I need to make "save as" ,"Exit" to in line with "open" and "new" in verticle direction,NOT with the icon)
sb suggest always set an icon for each JMenuItem, set an transparent Icon for alignment those without icons.
but this sounds not so attractive, are there any other ways? thanks a lot.

Create a method to do the icons. One can have one parameter (menu text) and the other could have two parameters (icon name, menu text). Have the one with just one parameter set up a default transparent icon.

you can always take a mort drastic action by subclassing MenuItem and
overriding the painting method.
But I belive that the first suggestion is faster.

• All in one 3512 alignment question

How can I re-use the alignment page and not print a new one every time I change a cartridge?  I'm tired of wasting ink and paper with this nonsense. Is there a workaround?

Hello nogoodusernames, and welcome to the HP Forums.
I see you are looking into bypassing the alignment after changing your cartridge.  Due to the design of the printer, there is no way to bypass this.  When a new cartridge is put in, the alignment is automatic to ensure the cartridge prints properly, and everything is set up and calibrated to avoid any print quality issues.

• Paragraph Alignment question - is it possible with scripting?

Hello. I am working on a business card template that has a paragraph alignment problem. I have asked in other forums if it was possible, they pointed out that it might be, with scripting.
I need to know if it is, so I can dig further.
Here is the problem: I have a name and title on seperate line that need to be aligned to the right margin (the longest line touches the right margin) but centered above or below themselves. The text box is set to receive a large amount of characters. This is an automated system using InDesign Server so no manual adjustments are being made once the information has been submitted.
Is this possible?

Again, I don't know anything about ID Server, but you can try this. Label the text frame 'card' (select the frame, go to Window > Automation > Script label and enter a 'card' -- without the quotes).
try
       tf = app.activeDocument.textFrames.item ('card');
       p0 = tf.paragraphs[0];
       p1 = tf.paragraphs[1];
       p0.justification = Justification.rightAlign;
       p1.justification = Justification.rightAlign;
       p0left = p0.insertionPoints[0].horizontalOffset;
       p1left = p1.insertionPoints[0].horizontalOffset;
       if (p1left > p0left)
          p1.rightIndent = (p1left-p0left)/2
       else
          p0.rightIndent = (p0left-p1left)/2;
catch(_){}
This one doesn't rely on a selection.

• Text alignment question

Hi guys
Just wondering if there is a way to keep two sentences in one string on the same line, but one aligned left, the other right using html or TLF?
So...
left margin>FIRST SENTENCE             SECOND SENTENCE<right margin
The string is being injected into a textflow, so it would need to work with either TEXT_FIELD_HTML_FORMAT or TEXT_LAYOUT_FORMAT.
I've imported css via a formatResolver, and have a class that colors and aligns the font. The color works, but aligning it does nothing.
Thanks for taking a look.

Forgot to mention it's for an AIR desktop app.  Here's the guts of the code from AS3CSSSample.as - some of the tags don't seem to work...

Some of them, built years ago, and long deserted, with weeds growing in the vacant round of the interior, which is open to the sky, and grass and wild-flowers rooting themselves into the chinks of the stones, look already like relics of antiquity, and may yet be overspread with the lichens of centuries to come. Others, where the lime-burner still feeds his daily and nightlong fire, afford points of interest to the wanderer among the hills, who seats himself on a log of wood or a fragment of marble, to hold a chat with the solitary man. It is a lonesome, and, when the character is inclined to thought, may be an intensely thoughtful occupation; as it proved in the case of Ethan Brand, who had mused to such strange purpose, in days gone by, while the fire in this very kiln was burning.</span></p>"

At frequent intervals, he flung back the clashing weight of the iron door, and, turning his face from the insufferable glare, thrust in huge logs of oak, or stirred the immense brands with a long pole. Within the furnace were seen the curling and riotous flames, and the burning marble, almost molten with the intensity of heat; while without, the reflection of the fire quivered on the dark intricacy of the surrounding forest, and showed in the foreground a bright and ruddy little picture of the hut, the spring beside its door, the athletic and coal-begrimed figure of the lime-burner, and the half-frightened child, shrinking into the protection of his father's shadow. And when again the iron door was closed, then reappeared the tender light of the half-full moon, which vainly strove to trace out the indistinct shapes of the neighboring mountains; and, in the upper sky, there was a flitting congregation of clouds, still faintly tinged with the rosy sunset, though thus far down into the valley the sunshine had vanished long and long ago.</span></p>"

• Basic Alignment Question

Hi,
For years I've avoided designing web sites that have a column
for banner ads along the left and right hand sides of a main
content area because of alignment problems. But I have to do it
this time. When I add content to one column, the spacing at the top
or bottom of the other is effected, and vice versa, creating
unwanted single spaces that appear differently in IE than Mozilla.
Here is
the test page example (I know the design is disgusting... but
the customer loves it!!)
It's now one centered table with three columns. Each column
has a centered table with a background image, with a navigation
table in the left one. Banner Ads and content will go in both
columns, which screws up the spacing. You can see a little space
above the navigation menu. When I add even a half table return
below it to nudge it up, the bottom of the right column tiles an
equal amount of space.
I tried using layers, but they always seem to display
differently in customers' browsers.
I would really appreciate any help! Thank you!
MFitz

Selector Class and ID names should describe where the element is being used - not what color it is. You may want to change your colors later and you would be stuck with "caption_green" that displays blue text.  etc...   In some respects, the less complicated your CSS is, the more freedom you have to mix things up in different combinations.
In this example, I have everything I need to position different colored captions all over my page.  I'm not saying you should or shouldn't do it this way.  I'm just showing how a few simply defined selectors can be re-used in multiple ways.
CSS:
p {font: 13px/1em Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; padding:10px; }
a {text-decoration: none} /**removes underlines from all links and anchor tags**/
.left {text-align:left}
.center {text-align:center}
.right {text-align:right}
.caption1,.caption2,.caption3 {font-weight:bold}
.caption1 {color: green}
.caption2 {color:red}
.caption3 {color:maroon}
HTML:
<p class="center caption1"> here is some centered green text</p>
<p class="right caption2"> here is some right aligned red text</p>
<p class="left caption3"> here is some left aligned maroon text</p>

• Page Alignment Question?

Hi,
I know how to "center" a page. But how does one both center
horizontally and vertically, so there is equal blank space around
the centered page on all sides?. Below is an example of what I'm
trying to say. No matter what the size of the monitor is, the page
is always centered, and middle aligned.

• Adobe 7.0.8 Standard - Alignment Question

I create PDFs through an application named PlanetPress for a billing process.  The PDF product is a standard PDF in a standard billing format.  I am unable to accurately edit information in columns through Adobe 7.0.8 Standard using the touch up tool.  All the data is orinally right-aligned and when I change a number (ex. 476.09 to 1476.09), the number with an extra character doesn't stay right aligned.  It looks like the following
$476.09
$1476.09
$389.09
Hope this makes sense, any help would be appreciated!

You need to go back to the original. Acrobat is not a very good editor and was not designed for that purpose.

• Alignment questions

I want to align various layers to different parts of my document. I have noticed in the past that alignment options sometimes display at the top of the screen, though they are not doing it for me now and I can not find an alignment panel.
1. How can I access the alignment options?
2. From a graphic designer's perspective, should text cenetered on a document generally only be used for formal style invites?
Thanks in advance.

Move Tool and the various vector tools have alignment and distribution controls in the Options bar. There's also Smart Guides (magenta lines appear when layers are dragged into alignment) which can be enabled in the View menu.

• Laying out buttons in a panel

I have a panel with 4 buttons. The panel is added to the main window using BorderLayout.SOUTH so that the buttons are at the bottom of the window. Now I want to align the buttons on the right side of the panel, like so:

----- ----- ----- -----
| | b1| | b2| | b3| | b4| |
----- ----- ----- -----

The obvious thing to do here is use
myPanel.setAlignmentX(Component.RIGHT_ALIGNMENT);
But it doesn't work. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Jason

Any idea why the
panel.setAlignmentX(Component.RIGHT_ALIGNMENT)
wouldn't do the trick?Because the panel is using a BorderLayout. Any inherent behavior specified by the panel would be overshadowed by the behavior specified by the BorderLayout layout manager.
By the way you also asked a component alignment question here: http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=57&thread=352465
If any of the replies answered your question then you should award the duke dollar.

• Engineer question: The limitations of auto-align

I have a question about the capability limitations of auto-align that I'm hoping one of the Photoshop engineers - or perhaps another qualified member of the community - might be able to field.
I've been trying, unsuccessfully, to use PS CS5 to precisely align groups of star photographs, as many people do with other apps. I need to align all of the images in a group exactly - to a pixel-level of precision - and combine them into a single flattened image. I have to do this with hundreds of groups consisting of thousands of individual image files, so when CS5 announced the auto-stack and auto-align features, this seemed like a nearly ideal solution.
Yet after stacking the different images together, and despite the fact that each layer is very nearly identical to the others, PS always rejects them with the standard dialogue that it couldn't find sufficent overlap ("Needs to have at least 40% overlap", etc). I've tried this with dozens of different star groups, each >99% identical in visual content, and always get the same rejection.
One immediate line of thought I had was whether Photoshop was having too much trouble distinguishing individual stars from the noise typical in astrophotos like these. It doesn't help to apply Noise Reduction first: when PS digs into the images to find alignable content or shapes, it might see them as more different than they appear to the eye, and PS may be having trouble seeing stars as not noise. I just don't know enough about the auto-align function to really say what's failing here.
There are many other specialty apps that perform this function (PixelInsight, Registax, etc etc), but as a dedicated professional user of the Master Collection products, I was hoping to find out from an engineer whether this type of image does in fact exceed the native image recognition capabilities of auto-align. Alternately, if there are additional steps or preliminary adjustments that might assist the algorithm in its processing, I'd be interested to hear about those. I'm also willing to post reference images if that's an aid to analysis.
Many thanks.

Thanks for the quick reply, Chris.
Is there any current workaround here, or, from your vantage, do you feel that the existing capabilities aren't there yet?
Lastly, and without meaning to ask you to reveal anything about future release specifics, do you feel that a functionality capable of handling star alignment at the pixel level is a likely near-term possibility, a far-off possibility, or simply off the table?

• Question About Multiple Choice/True/False Answer Alignment

When I insert a multiple choice or true/false question, The second response (answer B for either question type, is mis-aligned with it's radio button:
The Master Slide for these questions looks like this:
I can't figure out how to align the answer with its radio button.  Any ideas?
I'm using CP 7.0.1.237 on Windows 7.

This is indeed a very random issue. I have seen this in earlier versions of Captivate as well. I always create my template files from the blank theme, so I don't think it is specific to the theme.
As for solutions, sometimes changing the quality of slide to high worked, other times just reopening Captivate worked. Here are some of the solutions I have found on these forums:
1.  Create one more answer than I need (ie for a 4 answer question, create 5 answers) and then delete answer B.
2.  Uninstalled/reinstalled my Captivate 6 software

• Align to Artboard:  A quick and stoopid question

I've clicked on it. I've set the stage for something interesting to happen. I've looked in manuals; looked online. Swear to god I haveI'll say it right to yer face. But I still I cannot find a one-line answer to the question,
"What does the 'Align to Artboard' button do?"

it aligns the selected object to the artboard. ;)
You probably are not fully engaging it if you do not see anything happening.
First you have to select the align to artboard option, then you have to punch the button. Then, with one or more object selected, if you click on an align option. The object should align itself to the corresponding edge (or center) of the artboard.
I am describing CS3 behavior. I assume CS4 is similar, but do not know. CS2 and earlier behave a bit differently.
