All Images in Folder Changed to No Preview

At my company we have different work stations with our files stored on a XServe.
Sometimes when a new folder is created onto the XServe and images are dropped into this folder, all of the images are changed to No Preview. Example, a photoshop image is saved with Preview: Macintosh (8 bits/pixel). It will show the preview when saved and placed in a folder if you were to view the file in the folder. Even, placing in InDesign or Quark it will show the image preview. However, if you were to move the image file into a newly created folder, the image is changed to Preview: None. It doesn't always happen, but it is happening on certain occasion for some reason.
The only way we been able to fix this is to reopen the image in Photoshop or Illustrator and resave the file again with Preview. We would like to avoid having to do this. So what is causing the images to change to Preview: None when moved to a different folder?
Apple G5 and XServe   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

First thing to note that the file preview that you see in the finder has nothing to do with the preview that you see in layout programs like InDesign and Quark. They make their own preview from the actual image based on your layout preview and performance setting inside the program.
If all of your files are created with icon previews, then this may be a sign that the xServer is having drive/directory problems. Make sure you files are backed up and diagnose the health of the drives and Repair Permissions on the startup disk.

  • Need advice on how to export ALL images including any changes (Versions)

I have well over 15000 RAW ORF Olympus images in Aperture with approximately 10000 of them in the database and the rest as references to the file on the file system.
    My problem is 'many' fold...
First I am frustrated with using Aperture only because it doesn't seem to perform well anymore either because I have too many files, the database is corrupted, DB IO is slow... I don't know but its not performing as it did when I started using it and I don't know what to do to fix it... so with that said here are a few options I am pursuing and the problems I am having doing so.
I am moving to Adobe Bridge and Photoshop CS4, however with most of the files in the Aperture database I need to have them exported... however the only options are Master and or Version, which is frustrating because if I choose Master I get the original RAW file less all the changes done to any versions and if I choose the version I get customized JPEG's less the RAW master file. huh! I would like if possible some other options but I can understand if they don't exist.
    1. One option would be to get all the masters (which I can do now) but only if they are in the database and not referenced.
    2. Second option only would be to get all the versions if the RAW was modified and not export a version for a selected image if it does not exist.
    3. Third, have some way to only selected actual modified version images and not every image in a folder or in the database.
    4. Export to Photoshop .psd format with layers instead of versions?
    5. Filter by files in the database and files that are referenced.
    6. ... I'm open to other suggestions.
Is there a way to move all the database files back to file referenced to shrink the Database or do I need to export everything and then re-import them as references?
The export process for so many files is killing me as its taking me days and days and I have no way to cross check to ensure all the files and versions are retained when exported - I'm not sure what I have or how to rebuild them in Aperture at a later time once exported?
I am exporting the sidecar file with every image but am not sure the value or significances of this file - can this file help when moving to Photoshop/Bridge?
BTW. Another reason I wish to move from having Aperture manage my files in its database is I have now lost a few hundred unrecoverable pictures for no known reason in aperture, once after a trap as I was processing a image, I lost all of my sisters funeral shots - so so sad.
    Help!!!

Something is very very very wrong - 15,000 images are nothing, unless you have them all in one project. I have 300,000+ with no issues in performance. Another indicator is days to export 15,000. Don't blame Aperture - you have a giant problem.
I am not going to address how to do what you want exactly because I do not have the time but here are some hints -
You can search for adjusted versions, and you can search for managed vs. referenced (file status). You may want to think about using relocate master with some clever subfolder options/selections to put all of you original masters and any external edited masters (PSD, etc) into a nice neat hierarchy for you to browse via bridge - Aperture is fantastic at reorganizing directory structures via relocate masters.
There is no way to export adustments+RAW that Photoshop can interpret. If you want the Aperture non-destructive adjustments you must export versions end of story.
Personally I would figure out why you are having such issues with Performance - there is a cause and it will probably give you issues no matter what you are using down the road.

  • Will not export all images to folder

We are having a problem with LR not exporting all of the images when saving to a folder. It errors on some images and will not save them. All of the images are available and LR will export a web photo gallery with all of the images without any problems. Am I missing something?
    Thanks,
    C

Updated to 1.2 and all is well.

  • Export All images with Folder Hierarchy?

    Hi,
I use Lightroom all the time but would like to have all my photos available on my Iphone but it is not compatible with raw files. Is there a way that I could export all my images but keep their folder hierarchy intact so I would end up with a duplicate set of folders the same as I have in lightroom but the new set would only contain jpegs?
    Thanks
    Matt

I do just that with a free tool that has been published on "another" forum.
I'm not so sure if I can put th elink down here, but search for
Preserving Folder Tree Hierarchy using Export Plugins in 2.0
and you'll find a solution. Read the thread to the end, there are a number of improvement that never got into the "official" release.

  • All images read when changing keyword property

I have been altering some top-level keywords by editing them and clearing the "include on export" setting. Every time I change a keyword in this way, it seems that LR2 insists on reading all my image files! With a 35K image library, this takes forever, effectively making it impossible to alter the export setting on top level keywords of my keyword hierarchy.
"Automatically write changes to XMP" is NOT enabled.
Has anyone seen anything like this happening? Is there a work-around?

Thanks, Ian. Turns out my histogram window was already closed, so I don't think that's a workaround. It appears that LR is reading all files with that keyword or any child of that keyword. Of course, I had started with the keyword with the most photos. Lots and lots of patience got me through it....

  • Project not displaying all images.

In the project pane each project has a number beside it showing the quantity of images it contains.I have a Project called 2007 for all images from 2007 this contains 3830 images, if i click on the closed project ,without opening it, all images in the project become available in the browser pain ie 3830 images, this appears to be correct behavior.+However my 2006 project contains 2541 images, when I click on this without expanding it only 15 images become available in the browser+, how can I fix this.
I have since started organising each month into its own project with individual folders for each day to keep each project size down. All images are referenced.
Command;"update previews for project" has no positive effect.
Within each annual project I have brown folders for each month containing blue folders for each day.

in between the browser and viewer panes is a little search box ... click in it to change ... or if there is an 'x' in click it ... somehow you set a filter on that project ...

  • Web gallery synchronisation uploads all images each time.

It is just me, or is web gallery synchronisation clunky ? It seems to upload ALL images whenever a change is made (e.g., if I add an image to a web gallery, it uploads all of them again).
    Paul

I wonder if an upload is taking place. I see it taking much less time. I believe that the file is being checked for changes, and if the file is unchanged, then Aperture moves on to the next file. This is only a guess, but seems like a reasonable explanation.
For my part, I made synchronization manual. With an old mini, it is cumbersome to wait for sync everyday. Hope this helps.

  • How do i change the file preview image for mp4 files?  I replaced the image but it doesnt show in my dock, instead it shows the first still of a movie

pls help. i change the file preview of a movie file, and it shows that i have changed the preview in finder but when i open the folder on my dock, it shows the still of the movie instead.
the image shows the film the hangover as an example. the movie poster is visible in finder, but reverts to a default movie still from the dock. this only seems to occur for mp4 files.

its nothing to do with itunes, its movies form the internet. i got the file preview by taking an image off the internet, pressing command c and pasting it on top of the small icon in the get info section

  • RH HTML 9-chm file How to change the Shared Path of all images in entire project.

    Dear alll,
Previously, I inserted all images to my project from a shared folder with path A. But now I could not access to path A anymore, so I created a folder with the same name in path B which have the same images.
Now I need to update images and I cannot synchronize them from the current folder with path B.
I right-click an image in Project Manager pod, select Properties and then I saw this image has an attribute Shared Path is path A. There is any way to change this Shared Path to path B for all images in the project at a time ?
Anyone experiments it, please help me. Thanks.

Given you posted on the weekend, I would expect everyone to be off doing weekend-y things, rather than work-related things.
I don't use shared resources, but perhaps this topic, specifically the Replace Link entry might help?

  • Photos 1.0 not showing all images from Photos Library.photoslibrary folder/file after update install

I installed the update that changed my iPhoto to Photos 1.0, and the new Photos program is not showing all images from Photos Library.photoslibrary file/folder (not sure to call it file or folder since it is actually a folder with all my pics but it acts more like a file) after update install.  The Photos Library.photoslibrary file/folder shows to be 55 gb in size, and it shows to be loaded into the photos program, but there are maybe a few weeks of pictures showing instead of a few years.  Lots of pictures in the 55 gb are not showing for some reason.

No - iPhotos has not replaced anything - it is new and an addition - iPhoto is still on your system in the applications folder and still works just fine
Outlook is not supported by Photos - not sure if the support must come form Apple or MS as Photos uses a different interface to external packages than iphoto did

  • Image Colors Change in Bridge Preview Window

I edited some images first in Camera Raw and then Photoshop (CS5), all working in sRGB color space, and saved them as JPEGs.  If I select one of these images in the Bridge content pane, minimize the Bridge window, then maximize the Bridge window, the image appears correctly in the Bridge content pane but the colors are incorrect in the Bridge preview pane.  If I resize the view in the content pane, the image colors in the preview pane get corrected within a couple seconds.  Likewise, if I click on another image and then back, the image colors are correct in the preview pane, but if I again minimize then maximize the Bridge window, the image colors in the preview pane are incorrect again.
Windows Explorer displays the image colors correctly.  ZoomBrowserEX (browser software provided with Canon camera) displays the same image (same file) with incorrect colors.  When I upload these JPEGs to my web photohosting site (PictureTrail), the images appear there with incorrect colors.  That is where this issue becomes most problematic because with the colors being off, the images are useless for posting to online forums or classifieds.
It seems that the color in the JPEG is being read differently by different software, and is even being read differently under different circumstances within Photoshop (Bridge).  Is there a setting somewhere that I need to change?  Or some other issue?  Thanks.....

I have a fair understanding of color profiles and color management.  My monitor is a Dell UltraSharp U3011 set to the factory-calibrated sRGB display mode.
What makes me certain that this is not a simple matter of different color management in different applications is that Bridge is displaying the same JPEG file/image in two panes on the screen simultaneously and the colors do not match.  Furthermore, the incorrect colors in the preview pane image change to the correct colors if I resize the thumbnails in the content pane, or click on another image and then back; and the colors in the preview pane go back to incorrect if I minimize then maximize the Bridge window.  Seems to me that there must be something within that JPEG that is being interpreted differently in different circumstances that results in the "two versions" displayed within the same application (Bridge) on the same screen at the same time, and that other apps are interpreting one way or the other.

Exploring a bit further, I've realized that the same color display issue exists with the original JPEGs from my camera (Canon T1i, shooting in sRGB color space).  So it seems the issue did not originate with settings etc. in Photoshop.... but Photoshop (Bridge) IS displaying "two versions" on same screen at same time, and so must be doing something different with the JPEG info in one pane vs. the other.

  • My iPHOTO is empty but the photos appear in the Finder "all images" folder

Yesterday my iPhoto '08 was fine, then today, when it came out of sleep mode, there was a Finder window showing two folders: one named 445555 and the other named iPhoto Library. I clicked on the 445555 and the iPhoto opened empty, with no photos, like new. I closed it and tried to reopen from the Dock but it was still empty. Also tried to open from the iPhoto Library folder with the same result. After some despair i found the photos in the "all images" folder in the Finder main window, so i suppose they are OK and in my computer.
How can i restore my iPhoto or at least make a back up of the most recent photos that i don't still have a back up?
    Thanks for the help.

    Jeff
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and point it at the iPhoto Library Folder - which is in your Pictures Folder. If iPhoto sees a valid library there it will open it.
If, however, it does not see a valid library there then your database file is corrupted:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
    Regards
    TD

  • Image Quality Changes After First Preview

I've only been using Aperture for a few weeks but seem to have a problem when I preview any newly imported RAW images.
After I import any new RAW files, I'll select one for preview and for no more then a second the image looks great. Then all of a sudden the quality/brightness/sharpness reduces in front of me.
This only happens the once for each image, after that all images remain at this lower quality once previewed.
It's almost like Aperture is processing the image when I click to preview, but not in a good way.
It there a setting I should be looking for? I thought Aperture processed the image at the point of import, not when you first preview the image?

There can be other causes for this effect than are described above.  On the 5DMK3, if you have the in-camera Picture Styles set to anything other than Standard or Neutral, the Picture Style will be applied to the JPEG but Aperture's Raw converter will not apply the Picture Style adjustments when it processes the image.  Thus you will see some kind of shift in colour and/or contrast.
So either shoot only in JPEG mode if you want the Picture Styles applied to your images, or change the camera Picture Style to Standard or Neutral.
