All ports Timeout Cannot access system remotly

I have a few comuters in the office. My main tower is meant to be a DMZ. I usually have ports open for remote acces, screen sharing, file sharing, HTTP and FTP access.
Something has happened that has cause no external access to get to this box. Including screen sharing from behind the router. I have removed the Router AEBS and still not out side access. I changed my NAT setting temporarily to anothe box within my network "mac mini" external access was available via my WAN IP.
That said it seems to be an issue with permissions in my main tower.
I have tried preferances> security to turn on and off the firewall (currently off)
I have run disk utility to try to fix permissions that way.
I have flushed every cahe I could find.
I flush all my preferances.
Still no joy.
Any help with this situation would be greatly appreaciated.

Hi, I recently purchased a used MacBook a1181 and cannot access anything. I am new to Apple computers/laptops so I don't know if there is a simple solution or if it's maybe a HD problem? I tried to go into System Preferences and nothing happens. The dock (?) at the bottom also has a bunch of question marks. When I scroll over the question marks, I can see apps like Safari, iPhoto, etc. but I cannot open anything. I also tried to go to About this Mac and can't get anywhere either. Any ideas what could be wrong?

So usually that means that the applications are missing. It's like in a PC where the "Short Cut" link is broken.

So just like when shortcuts are broken and for the same reason: applications are moved, renamed etc.

What disks are you using? The originals would be Tiger and gray, 10.4.8 (Not the retail installer which would be 10.4.0.), Leopard, Snow Leopard. So 10.4.8 to 10.6.8 compatible.

I cannot access a remote app for quickbooks with firefox but can with IE?

Hi, I have recently installaed quickbooks online and the new version 2 of this remote app. Version 1 was working on firefox and when I called tech support at quickbooks they advised me to use Internet Explorer. I can access the remote app on IE, but would prefer to use firefox can you help?

Autofs timeout while accessing to remote NFS mount

Following Apple recommendations, I switched to "Directory Utility" to configure NFS mounts. As far as I understand, if you do so, the mounts are handled by automount which is itself called by autofs. The good thing of this is that autofs is unmounting unused mounts (after a timeout of 3600 seconds as defined in /etc/autofs.conf). Any time you need the remote drive (Finder call, ls in Terminal..., opening file), autofs is remounting ressource. This is a nice behaviour... in theory.
I'm using some codes (written in IDL) that are reading and writing on that remote NFS server once every 5 minutes. Theoretically, autofs should be detecting these accesses and should keep the drive mounted. This is unfortunately not the case. The drive is unmounted 3600 seconds after I last accessed the mount through the Finder or with any other Application.
There is apparently no way to remove this "automated unmounting" feature. I tried to set the timeout delay to a very large number (1 day) but it still disconnects me after this delay, if I don't do anything else than running my IDL code. If I mount the NFS share with the "mount_nfs" command, it works perfectly, as it is not handled by autofs.
I wonder then if there is any recommandation on Apple's side in such a case, other than going back to traditional mount_nfs.

As you have discovered, automount/autofs is also an "auto-unmounter" and there is no way to remove that feature. Contrary to what one might think, the auto unmounting does NOT happen after a period of "inactivity" of the mount. This is because autofs has no way of knowing when an automounted file system was last accessed. So, instead it periodically attempts to unmount it - if it is busy it won't get unmounted - if it isn't busy it will get unmounted.
You can't disable this - but you can make the periodic unmounting so infrequent as to effectively disable the feature. Try setting the AUTOMOUNT_TIMEOUT interval to something really large - like 315360000 (which would be 10 years).
However, in theory, this auto-unmounting should not be a problem because if it does get unmounted then the next access to that file system should cause it to get mounted again. And all this should happen without the code that is accessing the automount knowing that it isn't always mounted. It should always be there when it is accessed. So, the usual response to someone asking how to disable the auto-unmounting is to ask why they think it is a problem.
(Oh, and you don't have to use "mount_nfs" - just "mount" should work to manually mount an NFS file system (that saves a little typing).)

Cannot access system after dropping laptop - how to fix (don't have recovery disks)?

My wife dropped her L305-S5955 Satellite, Vista32 OS. Miraculously, case is perfectly fine, as is screen. Computer still powers on, too. At first it beeped - just now finding out that this is the "code" as to what is wrong, but we didn't know it then, and we can't remember how many beeps it was. Tried starting in safe mode and running the "Startup Repair", but the message "Windows cannot repair this computer automatically" and "startup repair cannot repair this computer authomatically"....viewing the diagnostic and repair details shows that a number of tests were run, and all of them but one were completed successfully (one failed). Successful was: "check for updates", "system check disk", "disk failure diagnosis", "disk metadata test", "target OS test" and "volume content check". The "root cause found" was "No OS files found on disk"....the "repair action" was "partition table repair" and the "result" was "failed". I read on another bulletin board that one could check whether one's hard drive was good at the command prompt by typing "chkdsk"....this was one of the first things I did, I should mention, and when I did it, it seemed to pass.
Ideally, of course we would like to have the thing working just as it did before, with all the files intact...but since we can't even get the OS running (she never did make those homemade bootable CD Roms I'm now finding out Toshiba buyers are encouraged to make), she will settle for just getting the computer working again and ultimately losing her files (we believe we have copies elsewhere of the important photos, etc)...but, I have 2 concerns:
1) I don't want to do this step of reinstalling the OS and overwriting everything IF there is ANY way to not have to do this (ie, pulling the hard drive and getting the files off some other cheap way), and
2) that there might be more than just ONE problem here (bad OS)....maybe the hard drive somehow IS also damaged...or something else is. It's true all the tests I mentioned seemed to pass my hard drive, but most of the comments on various bulletin boards I've checked give me pause here...they all seem to almost guarantee my hard drive is toast....some advise to find the make of the hard drive, go their website and download the special, specific diagnostic test software to thoroughly test the hard drive...could it be that doing this could in fact reveal a problem that other tests thus far have not..?! I'm not incredibly computer literate and Hitachi page seemed a bit confusing to me...not sure what to download. I also should mention that when I ran the "Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool" (also built into the Satellite, as one of the several recovery tools on the "System Recovery Options" page), it apparently passed that, too.
When I try to run "Windows Complete PC Restore", I get the mssg that "windows cannot find a backup on this computer"...."a valid backup location could not be found".
I am currenty trying to run "System Restore" (many different dates were shown)....but is it supposed to take a very long time (several hours or more??)....it has been going for 10 minutes already, saying it's restoring files, but
my wife said she tried this too, and that it ran for about 2 hours but she accidently bumped the computer and it stopped running (so we're not sure if it was successful or not).
Lastly, I wanted to mention that I already tried removing the back plates and checking the memory cards and hard drive to make sure they were securely seated (they seemed to be)...I even pulled them out slightly and reseated them to be sure....someone on a buletin board mentioned this can be the cause sometimes of things not loading after physical shock such as being dropped.
Hopefully this is enough info that someone might have a very good idea what the computer's issue is, and how to best fix it. Should I buy the bootable OS disks from Toshiba (someone wrote that they can be had for $25 or so?). Or can this be downloaded from Microsoft? It seems like it should be FREE, since it was already paid for when we bought the laptop! Should I use the "TOSHIBA Recovery Wizard" ? Again: if absolutely necessary (how to 100% verify this?), we'll overwrite the hard drive and lose our files, but I just want to be sure...and also that I'm not trying to load it onto a hard drive with some hidden problem.

Update: I tried the "Toshiba Recovery Wizard" after everything else either fizzled out or hung up. After going all the way thru the recovery process (up to 100%), I finally got an error message.....it didn't work. And now, when I fire up the computer, I don't even get to that menu with the recovery options....the only thing I can boot into is the screens with the various ways to run your OS (in "safe mode", "safe mode with networking", etc).
I'm not a techie, but I'm guessing at this point, the part of my hard drive that got damaged in the fall was, at the very least, the partition with the recovery data. Couple that with the fact that this cheapo Toshiba laptop didn't even come with recovery disk (or ANY kind of disk, even basic installation software!), I'm screwed: I don't see any way to get a workable computer now without some kind of disk to boot from. So NOW my concern is more about spending the $$ for a new OS and THEN finding out the hard drive has other problems too...is broken in some other way to boot.
How to check this? As I said, I did run "chkdsk" back when I could get into the recovery menu and run the fix-it programs. It didn't note any problems. Thinking of taking this opportunity to upgrade to Windows 7 from Vista (which I never liked), but I have to know that the computer is otherwise ok....how to be sure? Help!!

VPN clients cannot access to Remote location

I have setup the VPN remote access to ASA 5520. The login is working. The users can access to the local network. But they can't access to the remote network through the tunnel. Is it the NAT setting need to be set for the tunnel or the VPN client to allow the VPN client access to the remote network?

Can you post a descent config of your device?
Do you have multiple vlans in your network?
Did you implement routing for your remote vpn subnet to access the lan?
What is your topology like?

Cannot access system member lists after deleting unused currencies

I recently removed some unused currencies from the metadata file for an app.
The currencies I removed were not set as the default currency for any entities, and there was no stored data in the application using those currencies. The currencies removed were also not referenced in the rules file or the member list file.
The problem is that, after deleting the unused currencies, when I try to select either the "[Inputs]" or "[Totals]" system member lists for the Value dimension (within a grid), the system returns a "The parameter is incorrect" error message, and no list appears. All the other system member lists in the Value dimension work fine, and all other member lists in other dimensions are ok. I tried reloading a metadata file with the old currencies back in, but this did not resolve the issue. There are no special characters in any member names or descriptions.

delete the file homedirectory/library/preferences/com.apple.dock.plist and log out/in. this will reset your dock, spaces and exposé preferences to the defaults. set them up again.

Cannot access System Profiler

When I press the apple logo > About this Mac, More Info is greyed out.
I read that this goes to the system profiler, which is located in utilities, but it isn't in my utilities folder (there's only Adobe flash player and a folder labeled Contents).
There is a file called systemprofiler.plist in my preferences though.
Is this something I should be worried about, or should I just let it go?

It is normal to have systemprofiler.plist. If it isn't missing entirely, you may have inadvertently moved it. Get EasyFind and do a search for "System Profiler.app" to see where it might be located. Also enter "SystemProfiler" and make sure you're seeing SystemProfiler (a folder, not the app) in /System/Library. Don't go there, just confirm it exists at that location.
If it is completely missing, it can be reinstalled using Pacifist and the Install DVD.

I updated my iphoto then had an update, however when i did all this i cannot access my photo library

Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

RV042 - How to close all ports and leave some specific open

Here is the scenario of my network:
- A company with 20 branches in Rio de Janeiro area. The main servers are in a datacenter located in downtown.
Each branch has a RV042 router with firmware version 1.3.12.19-tm (Feb 13 2009 13:03:21) installed.
All users in this network have a proxy configuration pointing to proxy.[blah].com.br port 3128.
The HTTP/HTTPS traffic should go through proxy only.
The network settings for every RV042 are similar:
RV042 LAN IP = 172.16.***.1 /24.
RV042 WAN IP = 192.***.***.*** /30.

The problem:
- Some "smart" users were caught using Ultrasurf application, which changes the proxy settings to go through port 9666 or even 443.
In other machines, we've found some black proxies [for example: 212.46.27.142 port 8080].
My objective:
- To close all ports in Firewall -> Access Rules section and grant permission only to some selected and specified ports.
- To redirect all HTTP/HTTPS connections to go to proxy's IP address only.
Gentlemen, could you please tell me which Access Rules can I set in these RV042s in order to block and prevent these users to continue abusing this network? Is there anything else am I missing?
P.S.: The users who were caught using Ultrasurf were fired. ;-)

Thanks for your answer. But let me tell you better. In this scenario, all machines in LAN can use RDP and VNC normally.
I want to block everything else, just to avoid users to try using other ports.
You might want to try Deny all traffic out, except for the PC's you need to use RDP, and then only allow 80, and 443 to the proxy.[blah].com.br port 3128. This way all web traffic would have to pass through that proxy, otherwise it would be denied.
In this network, we use VNC to provide remote IT support to users in these branches.
They use RDP to access some servers in the datacenter.
I think that the rule below line 6 is letting users go and traverse the proxy.

I have Dreamweaver CS3 and have no trouble using it to access remote files. This is not a Dreamweaver CS3 issue.
Is your password correct.
Is your username is correct
Are you in the correct "root" directory for your website?
Is the server expecting SFTP (unlikely)?
Have you checked the Server Compatibility button and tried unchecking and checking FTP optimization and alternative FTP move method?
Has your hosting provider suddenly changed to IP v 6 (unlikely)?
Have you changed your firewall?
These are things to check out in Dreamweaver in the Remote Info panel in your Advanced Site Definition.

Cannot access internal network after Tiger upgrade

I've just upgraded an eMac (1.25GHz, 768MB) from 10.3.9 to 10.4.6. Although I can get online, access Mail and all applications, I cannot access the internal network at all.
I've updated to 10.4.9, but still no luck. I've restarted, logged in as a different user, logged out and in again, removed the 'com.apple.networkconfig.plist' file from the 'Library/Preferences' folder, but still doesn't work.
I can see all the aliases to the other machines on the network in the sidebar, but clicking on them brings up a message "The alias xxxx could not be opened, because the original alias could not be found.".
Other machines can see this on on the network. File Sharing is turned on.
Any thoughts, I'm tearing my hair out a bit!

Cannot access my blackberry hub nor make any settings/configurations to my device

Yesterday my device started giving me problems which I have never experienced before. It firstly deleted my call log, then when I restarted it completely two days later it reset itself. I cannot access my emails nor configure my mailbox, my contacts are all gone, I cannot access my blackberry hub as it has been saying "preparing blackberry hub" for almost the whole day and I cannot send text messages or anything. Even if I restart it-with or without extracting the battery. Nothing happens. I haven't done any software updates lately. PLEASE HELP!!!

I have a foxpro database sitting on remote server (netware server). the dbf folder is shared and I can access it using windows explore on my weblogic server (windows 2003). I created a system dsn for that. I can access the database from the a stand alone java program using
Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver");
Connection surgConn = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:odbc:FoxDB", " ", " ");
But when I use the same thing in my weblogic 8.1 application, I cannot access the database. I didn't config any data source in weblogic 8.1
Why?
When I try this on my own computer - windows 2000, weblogic 8.1 workshop. remote foxpro database dbf folder. it works.
Any idea?

should work OK (though I have a better way)... Be warned that the JDBC ODBC
bridge is specifically dangerous. It is not threadsafe.
