All user folder icons showing as generic folder icon

Hi all,
I have an issue where all the folders in my User folder are the generic folder icon (e.g. not the pictures, music, desktop specific ones etc).
This seems to not just be in my user area, but an issue with Finder, as when viewing my Mac mini's folders from my iMac (the iMac is the one with the issue), the icons look generic also.  But on the Mac mini itself they're fine.

This only happens on the dock, when I set the managed preferences in WGM to show dock items like group folders applications folder, even the network home icon, (the little house), all these icons appear as question marks. If I follow this path from the sidebar like this:
network->servers->myserver->users->documents
or
I see that the users are saving their work on the server, this is really puzzling me!By the way, these are eMacs running 10.4.8.
This also may sound kiind of weird but when I click on managed preferences in dock items to add a group's folder and check the box an old folder from a deleted group comes up and not the group folder of that particular folder.

Your website has a link to a feed at
    http://feeds2.feedburner.com/CrossCultureCalvaryChapelPodcast?format=xml
This feed contains the itunes:new-feed-url tag, forwarding to a feed at
    http://calvarychapel.nl/index.php?option=comsermonspeaker&task=podcast&feed=RSS2.0&nohtml=1
This latter feed is what is being used when you click on the 'subscribe' button in the iTunes Store, and the result matches the feed. (The list you have under 'Podcasts' in your own iTunes application probably includes earlier episodes: removing them from the feed doesn't remove them once downloaded, but the removed episodes don't show for new subscribers).
However, the iTunes Store page lists 114 episodes, the last being 28-3-09, thus not showing later additions, and shows earlier episodes present in neither feed. Therefore the page has the correct feed link for subscribers but itself has not updated since March - since when you have changed the URL and deleted earlier episodes. Why this should be I can't say: there is usually a delay before changes show, but only a day or two. It's peculiar that it should have failed to update the Store page but has the correct link on the 'Subscribe' button, and I can only suggest you try contacting Support:

  • How to set permissions like "For all users" with Sandbox

    Hello!
    Hello!
I am using Sandbox for Mac OS X Leopard and I've got a question to you:
How can I set up a folder to behave like the For all users folder in the users directory?
    Greetings

Well, sandbox sets ACL's not posix permissions. The sticky bit is a posix permission. Sand box will allow you to do something similar to the sticky bit using ACL's, but the exact duplication of the sticky bit is not possible, but something just as useful or more useful can be easily implemented.
To set the sticky bit you will need an app called FileXaminer or the Terminal.app command line.
to set the sticky bit simply put "1" in front of the the permissions number when you run chmod on the command line, here is an example:
    chmod 1775 /users/data/shared #assigns permissions 775 and the sticky bit#
    chmod 775 /users/data/shared #assigns permissions 775 without the sticky bit#
note: note actual use of the chmod and chown commands will, in most cases require the sudo (super user do) command to be used with them. example:
    sudo chmod 1775 /users/data/shared #assigns temporary super user priviledge#
The way I set my shared user's directories with ACL's is this:
    first I created folder /users/data -permissions=777 (everyone).
I had three users so I created folders for each in /users/data:
    /users/data/user1 #this is just example-substitute real user name#
    /users/data/user2
    /users/data/user3 #etc,etc,#
set the posix permission on each user folder 700 (owner:read, write, execute)
set the owner and group on each one accordingly:
    chown user1:staff /users/data/user1 #substitute real user name#
    chown user2:staff /users/data/user2
    chown user3:staff /users/data/user3 #(etc,etc)#
Now each user has their own data folder they can read and write to at will (when they are logged in to their user account).
They can safely create and maintain their data and no one can delete it.
Since these are shared data accounts. other users will need to read the data, this is where the ACL's come in.
You will need to use Sandbox to place ACL's for each allowed user, on each of the user directories:
    0: user:joe inherited allow list,addfile,search,add_subdirectory,readattr,writeattr,readextattr,writeextattr,readsec urity,file_inherit,directoryinherit
    1: user:mary inherited allow list,addfile,search,add_subdirectory,readattr,writeattr,readextattr,writeextattr,readsec urity,file_inherit,directoryinherit
    2: user:sue inherited allow list,addfile,search,add_subdirectory,readattr,writeattr,readextattr,writeextattr,readsec urity,file_inherit,directoryinherit
Basically with the above ACL's the only thing the allowed user can't do is delete files. They can copy files, they can add files, etc. This behavior is somewhat similar to what can be accomplished with the sticky bit, but much more controlled and structured. That is the beauty of using ACL's.
Using SandBox you can taylor the permissions as you see fit for each every user. You can set permissions for an administrator to delete files as well. You can take away or add permissions for each user as you see fit. let your imagination be your guide.
ACL's weren't meant to replace posix permissions, but rather to allow administrators to fine tune user permissions.

My users folder has 140GB used on it, but I cannot find where it is getting that calculation. I went through all of my folders and opened them all in an info panel, and they all come out to about 30GBs. Where is the rest of the data? -Using Mountain Lion

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so.
Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then drag or copy — do not type — into the Terminal window:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Press return. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • How do I install a Thunderbird add-on for all users? Putting the XPI file into Extensions folder didn't work.

I'm trying to install Enigmail 1.8.2 for all users. I thought I read somewhere that you don't need to unpack the XPI file.
Whilst writing this, I did some experimenting and found a solution, but it's messy (see below). Is there an easier way?
Fresh install of Thunderbird 31.6 on Windows 7 x64. Have observed the following:
    1. If I install the extension for one user via the Add-Ons GUI (from the marketplace, not from a local file), it does work. The Appdata\Roaming\Mozilla\Extensions folder is empty. Folder {847b3a00-7ab1-11d4-8f02-006008948af5} is created in Appdata\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\extensions\staged\ and moved from staged to extensions when TB is restarted.
    2. If I download the XPI file from Enigmail site and copy it to Program Files(x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\Extensions folder, then Thunderbird's Extensions screen says "You don't have any add-ons of this type installed".
3a. If I rename the xpi to zip (e.g. enigmail-1.8.2-tb+sm.xpi.zip) then I can open it and see that the contents are similar to what was created at point (1). If I unzip the contents, then Thunderbird doesn't recognise the add-on, unless I rename the folder to the GUID above (which could be found in install.rdf or chrome.manifest, once you know what you're looking for).
Presumably I could also have done a per-user install, copied the folder from the profile, removed the extension, then pasted the copy into the program folder. That would save looking up the GUID but is only a little less fiddly.
3b. After renaming the folder and restarting TB, it gives me a new tab "Install Add-on" which says "Another program on your computer would like to modify Thunderbird with the following add-on: ... Location: C:\Program Files (x86)". Once I allow the add-on, it is listed in Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\extensions.ini.
Aside: Disabling the add-on simply removes the line from extensions.ini, so how does TB distinguish between an unapproved add-on and a disabled one? It seems to be in extensions.json.

Is Thunderbird already installed in the computers? If so, you could download the .xpi file and drag and drop it into the extensions window (after opening that) to install it in all the computers, following which you click the Install buttons when they become enabled, and you might have to restart Tbird afterwards.

  • My bookmarks are all still there, but 'Show all bookmarks' is empty and so is 'Bookmark this page Folder Choose'.

I have installed FF 4.0 on home and office PCs (both Windows XP). Bookmarks are synced between them using FF Sync 1.7. Until a couple of days ago, no problem. But now something weird has happened to the bookmarks on my home PC.
All the bookmarks are there - I can select them normally from the BM toolbar and the BM menu, and they are found by the address bar.
However, I can no longer organise my bookmarks. When I choose 'Show all bookmarks' the All Bookmarks folder appears completely empty. When I add a new bookmark, the Choose folder dialog shows a small, apparently random selection of my bookmark folders, and the Choose drop-down doesn't show any folders at all.
I have tried restoring bookmarks from several days ago and also from the office machine. In both cases restore worked fine, but it still only populates the Bookmark menu and not the Show all/Organise folder.

This looks like a duplicate of https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/835014#answer-201724
Backup of bookmarks, deletion of places.sqlite, and restoration of bookmarks solved it for me.

  • Powershell Command to permanently delete items in ALL users Deleted Items folder older than X days.

Does anyone know a powershell command that can be run on Exchange 2010 SP1 that will permanently delete mail in the deleted items folder older than X days for ALL users in a specific database? This should include any user created subfolders in deleted items

I know that seems bizarre to have user created subfolders in deleted items but we have found that users have discovered that if they create subfolders then their deleted items dont get purged at the regular retention period time.

  • HT4207 "archive" set to "off" and deleted notes still show in the "all mail" folder...

I have "archive" set to "off" and deleted notes still show up in the "all mail" folder, any solutions?

Sometimes the Junk Email rule is damaged.  An example of this can be seen here:
    http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/2655142/en-us
I would try a couple of things:
Try enabling the Junk Mail Filter, restart outlook, disable it again, and restart.
Or you may find that the just removing the junk mail rule manually using MFCMAPI may do what you want.
One last thing to look into...  Does the mailbox do Exchange ActiveSync with a Samsung Android device?  If so check here:

Showing the Library folder will not cause the problem you've described. Nevertheless:
    chflags hidden ~/Library

    chflags nohidden ~/Library
Note, there is no "/" after Library.

After using time machine my users folder cannot be seen, but all information is still intact. Where did it go?

This is a new feature or bug if you want to call it that in OS X 10.9.3
Until Apple fixes this, here is a temporary work around.
Copy and paste the following command in the Terminal and then hit Enter, followed by your password.
    sudo ln -s /Users /Users\ Folder; ln -s /Users/Shared /Users/Shared\ Folder
This will put a link to the Users folder called "Users Folder" on your Hard Drive and a link to the Shared folder called "Shared Folder" inside of the Users folder.

You do not mention it, but I will assume you are running OS 10.9.1.
Go to: Apple menu / System Preferences / Users & Groups. Click the padlock and enter your password.
Click the + (plus sign) and set up a new account for your wife. You have to enter a bunch of info. And then create the correct Login Options. Automatic login does not require a password from the selected user.
When that is done, verify the account works by restarting the computer and login as your wife.
Make sure that any applications in your own Users folder that will be needed are moved to the Applications folder in your wife's Users folder.
Now go back to Users and Groups, click the padlock and authenticate, select your own account, and hit the - (minus sign). This step cannot be reversed, so you might want to wait a few days before doing it.
When your wife is logged in, the App Store will know.

Yes, you can move your user directories to the HD and keep your OSX and Applications on the SSD drive.
Whether you partition your HD or not depends on how much data you have and how you propose to use your HD.
Are you planning to use your iMac as a Time Machine backup volume? If so, partition it off.
Do you have huge data files, eg video, music, photos?
How much of your 2tb drive will be "free" once it is loaded with all your data?
A little more information is required before the optimal configuration can be recommended for your use.

I would like to have Menu Editor installed for all users. I attempted to put the .xpi file in c:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\extensions with the expectation that the user would be prompted to install.

You need to rename the XPI file to the (GU)ID of the extension as listed in the file install.rdf or just install the extension in a profile and copy the file or folder from that profile to the extensions folder.
