All users and settings lost on Security Update PRAM reset lost all

Just did a security update and on reboot, login window accepted my user and password, however, screen started to boot into normal desktop and would go back to login screen again. This would happen everytime.
Only option was to reset PRAM. Upon reboot, lost all users for email and all accounts are gone.
Can I rebuild the accounts without re-entering them all.

What OS version
Is the machine stand alone or an OD master/replica?
Were your missing users in LDAP?
When you say 'lost all users for email and all accounts are gone', explain where you are looking to discover the missing accounts.
What type of backup do you have?

Lost User Account Settings After OSX Security Update

After loading the security update, the system booted up into OSX and into my account without asking for a password. Other than having the same dock icons and applications, my account seems to have been cleared. I have no files on my desktop and all my programs are reset, each one asking me to set it up, find registration and serial numbers, etc. The dock was at its default position on the bottom also.
I found my user account and the settings for it under Shared users on my MacIntosh HD. I don't know how it got there, but all my information is there...I just don't know hot to get OSX to use it instead of the bare bones settings it seems to have chosen.
Can anyone help me with this? I am still running OSX 10.3.9 on a Mac G4.

The system would not allow me to do this because some files were in use in the account into which I was trying to copy. I had already been looking in the accounts prior to having a response and decided to do the following:
1) create a new account with a different name - I used "owner"
2) copy all the information from the old account which I found under shared into the new "owner" account
3) log out of the account I was on (the labotomized version of my original account) and log on to new "owner" account. Verify links, files, etc...everything was good, just like it had been.
4) rename the offending account.
5) rename new owner account back to the old name.
6) log out and back in the old account name...everything was back with my original account name.
Might not have needed all those steps, but I can't believe that worked. I was quite happy it worked, but still confused at to how that happened in the first place.

Help! I downloaded and installed the a security update for safari last night and after it rebooted my system quit recognizing my password and quit working, taking me to a utilities window.

I let my system download and install the latest security update for Safari yesterday, 28 Apr 14, and when it rebooted, it wouldn't let me login. Instead it took me to a utilities windown that allowed me to verify my h/d then told me it couldn't be repaired so I would need to save all of my documents (not sure how since it won't boot up) and reinstall OS X. Help!

if you’ve been making regular backups to date, then you could just restore from the last update which you’d made before installing the most recent Safari update. If you haven’t been making regular backups to date, you can try the method provided on this Apple page, in the “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility” section. If you’re not already making regular backups, then I’d highly recommend purchasing an external disk for use as a Time Machine backup destination once you’ve gotten this resolved, so that this sort of problem would be more easily resolved in the future.

Keep receiving "USB Over Current Notices" since updating to OSX 10.6.8. I have no devices plugged into my Imac and running everything wireless. SMB/PRAM resetting did not work. Does anyone have some advice or can help?

Pretty strange, but...
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, does it happen in Safe Mode? Reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

Menu Bar Icons Disappeared and other issues after Security Update 2006-001

I was really affraid when i've heard about the Safari vulnerability, so I was really happy to see the Security Update 2006-001.
But after installing it, I'm having regrets:
* mouse speed turned to default settings
* system preferences crashes when i try to access to Mouse & Keyboard
* all the menu bar icons disappeared: Bluetooth, Airport, Time, EVEN Spotlight
* Finder is slower...
I've repaired disk permissions but: nothing happens....
What should I do please?
Should I wait?

I'm gonna tell you a secret, just like i said my problem wasn't due to the Security Update but because of Front Row.
How? Because, I've hacked my iMac (without iSight) to install FrontRow (with an update), and i've installed the Security Update at the same time. Restarted my computer, and thought the problem was due to the Security Update.
If you did the same thing, here's the trick to remove Front Row:
Delete Front Row (/System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app)
Install/reinstall the the latest Mac OS X Update Combo.
This article assumes you haven’t tried installing Front Row before without the use of Enabler. If you have used one of the very early versions of Front Row (ones installed without Enabler):
Delete Front Row (/System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app)
Delete the preference file (/System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.frontrow.plist)
Remove any Login Items that launch Front Row (System Preferences >Accounts >User >Login Items)
Disable any shortcuts managed by third-party applications that launched Front Row.
Reboot and reinstall.

ClamAV and DNS Failure with Security Update 2010-005

Hey everyone, got a bit of an issue.
I'm running Leopard Server 10.5.8 and I've noticed a very odd issue with the latest security update, (2010-005).
Since the update, whenever ClamAV goes out to check for new definitions and database updates, all of my DNS clients lose connection during the few minutes that it's working. I've verified this by watching the logs as the updates happen. Everything is fine, and the second that ClamAV starts running, DNS fails on all the clients, then starts again after the update process.
Anyone else notice this? And more importantly, how should I go about disabling ClamAV, since I don't run a mail server off this particular server.

Mail.app and attachments issues after security update

just installed latest security update (via software update) and now when i try to attach any file to an email, I get the spinning beach ball.
have tried rebooting and zapping the pram
anyone experienced similar or have an idea what might have happened?

Hi ben.
This could be caused by some Launch Services cache or preferences corruption. The following article describes how to manually reset Launch Services -- the notes at the bottom of the article also provide information about the side effects of deleting each of the files involved:

If you prefer using a cache cleaning utility instead of following the manual procedure described in the previous article, this other article provides links to some utilities that can be used for troubleshooting and cache cleaning:

It seems that the most appropriate utility for solving this particular problem is Tiger Cache Cleaner, but you may also want to consider other utilities, such as OnyX, or Cache Out X, which are free. Whatever utility you choose, be sure to read this first:

As an example, this is how you should proceed with OnyX:
1. Quit all applications.
2. Launch OnyX and enter your administrator password.
3. Click Maintenance. In the Reset section, check LaunchServices database.
4. You may uncheck any other pre-checked options if you wish.

6. Restart the computer.

Issue with Safari and / or 2011-02 Security Update???

Updated our iMac and Macbooks to above. Since that point, Airport Utility (AU) can not find the Airport Extreme (AE) from either Macbook. The Macbooks can attach to the AE - just that AU can not find it. However, our iMac AU - hard wired ethernet connection - can find the AE. I reloaded the AE 7.5.2 firmware - still same problem. Also having issues with connecting to the TM backup from the MB- seems related to the AE. Reloaded AE with 7.5.2 - no change. Never a problem until this latest update. No other changes have been made.
Has anyone else encountered this problem or have a suggestion on how I might fix it.

Rod - Thanks for the suggestion - I ended up not trying it.
I reverted Airport Extreme (via my AU through the hard-wired iMac) to 7.4.2 from 7.5.2.
Note - 7.5.2 had been working fine until the Safari and 2011-02 Security update were installed. Seems as if it caused something to go wrong in 7.5.2.
I can now see AE via AU via the wifi Macbooks - and TM is working again from the Macbooks. The TM disk is actually on the iMac.

Mail and Safari crashes after Security Update 2007-006 and update 10.4.10

I just installed Security Update 2007-006 (Universal) and Mac OS X Update (Intel) 10.4.10 and now neither Mail nor Safari (nor sometimes Microsoft Messanger) will start. They just crash immediately after starting. Safari started working for a short while, but now, again, it won't start either, and Mail has not opened once since installing these two updates without immediately crashing. Does anyone have any idea why that might be so or how I can fix it?

Thank you very much for your quick answer. I never installed Safari 3 beta. I ran the repair disk and repair permissions from my install DVD, and did it did find and fix errors. I also deleted com.apple.safari.plist as suggested, but neither Safari nor Mail will open yet without crashing immediately (I've also rebooted since doing so). Additionally, I found a suggestion on another website to try installing "Mac OSX Update Combo 10.4.10"--Software Update installed the non-combo version, whatever that means, but the Combo installer app also crashes when I try to start it. Do you have any other suggestions? What other information can I give that could help? These problems only occurred after my reboot this morning after installing the OSX and security updates. Anyway, thanks for your help.

For my computers, though some of them support BlueTooth devices and accessories,
my preference and economy of standard, is to have wired USB and also use powered
USB hubs for accessories.
I've used USB wired keyboards and mouse products; and some I've bought from the
original owners who had upgraded to BT, and never used the new Apple USB model;
so I have spares of these on-hand since they seldom fail, but do work when BT won't.
{A SMC reset should not cause a problem, or seldom has; but can solve some.}
In my opinion, the wired USB keyboard is an essential accessory, if not a necessary
primary means of user access on a continuous basis. At least until the wires fail...!

Slow and erratic connection after security update

Any ideas? Since the latest software update I have had problems with broadband connection - takes forever to load safari and send/receive e-mails - sometimes, but not always, asking for password and telling me its incorrect. Have checked settings with ISP and they are fine.......... a PC windows user in the house is having no trouble with broadband from the same livebox so its appears to be a problem with my mac

External Interface and Apple OS X Security Updates since 28 July 2010

Ever since the OS X and Safari updates from 28 July onward, we have been unable to send data from Flash player to Javascript and out to Unity 3D. From the alert() statements I have made, it appears as if the communication is being blocked at the Flash level. In other words, the browser is either no longer accepting the external interface calls from Flash, or Flash is blocking them internally. Calls from the browser to Flash are still functional.
The Flash version number is 10.1.82.76 on both old (non updated machines) and newly updated (doesn't work). Our application works on Windows fine. On OS X systems that have not had the updates, it also works fine.
We purchased a new iMac tonight to test and the communication works fine:
Mac OS X 10.6.3
Safari 4.0.5 (6531.22.7)
On another machine the system worked fine a week ago:
Mac OS X 10.6.4
Safari 5.0 (6533.16)
After the update to the following, it does not work:
Mac OS X 10.6.4
Safari 5.0.1 (6533.17.8)
Anyone experiencing anything like this? Anyone experiencing ANY trouble with Flash and those updates?
Any and all information will help.

Upgrade from 2012 to 2012 R2 DNS, DNS Role and settings lost

I tried to ugrade a 2012 Server Core to 2012R2 Core.
After the Upgrade the server booted, but for some reason the DNS server Role wasn't installed anymore.
Installed the DNS Rolle with Server Manager after the upgrade, hopping that maybe the DNS configuration would still exist and load. But after the successful DNS Role installation it just locked like a fresh DNS Installation. I had to apply the pre upgrade chekpoint
since without the DNS a lot of services (webpages, exchange etc.) couldn't be accessed anymore.

DNS and IIS roles installed.
No it was not a DC.
DNS Zone Transfers to a second DNS server.
I tried the upgrade on both DNS, same result. Since I never before had this problem with a DNS role (going form 2012 to 2012R2) I didn't check the DNS and upgraded the second server too at which point I got reports about the DNS resolution not working anymore
and roleld both servers back to the old checkpoint.
I don't have the update log anymore since I had to revert to an old checkpoint.
I'm not sure what to tell you about the update process. I'm not aware that there really are any options.
I started setup.exe, told the setup to search for updates before starting the installation process.
Selected the upgrade option.
Setup did finish, server rebooted.
If noone can give an input without the log I can try it again and save the log.
