Allowing the caps lock working in the number row?

nt

From the bottom of http://www.vim.org/tips/tip.php?tip_id=1323 to do it generally in Linux.
On Linux you can remap 0...9 keys adding the following lines to your ~/.xmodmaprc file:
keysym 1 = exclam 1
keysym 2 = at 2
keysym 3 = numbersign 3
keysym 4 = dollar 4
keysym 5 = percent 5
keysym 6 = asciicircum 6
keysym 7 = ampersand 7
keysym 8 = asterisk 8
keysym 9 = parenleft 9
keysym 0 = parenright 0
I also mapped "[" to "{" and "]" to "}":
keysym bracketright = braceright bracketright
keysym bracketleft = braceleft bracketleft
There's great advice on how to do it in Vim only here also.

  • My MacBook Pro is apparently powered on, but no screen display and cannot power off.  Cap lock works so keyboard is working but trackpad not responding.

MacBook Pro is powered on but no screen display.  Track pad not working and cannot power off.  Have tried wireless mouse and no response.

Bring it to an Apple store or AASP. Power down by holding the power button down.

  • The 'caps lock indicator immediately truns off when any key is pressed.

I have a 6 week old system.  When I press(turn on) the 'CAPS LOCK' key it does lite up .  However it reverts to lower case - and lite turns off, immediately when ANY OTHER key is touched on the keyboatd.
I ran the anti virus program  and it appeared to be fixed.  However it does the same thing today, even after I run the anti VIrus program(s) again.

  • I got a external Apple Wired Keyboard (w/ NumPad), caps lock mapped to control doesn't work with tab + caps lock + shift

I got a external Apple Wired Keyboard (w/ NumPad) since I'm a developer. I have used control panel > keyboard > modifier keys to make the caps lock key the control key. I can't get it to work when I press caps lock (which maps to control) +shift + tab (which I use to change tabs backwards).
Any ideas? It works when I use the regular control key, and it works on my built-in MBPro keyboard. Thx!

Hi Steve, Welcome to apple discussions.
Hmm, that is a strange problem. Well, you've already done what I would suggest which is to go to the keyboard settings and click the "Restore defaults" button in the modifier keys window and try again. If that doesn't work then you can restart the computer and check. If that doesn't work you can try to reset the pram. Hold the optioncommand+PR buttons after you hear the startup chime, it should chime again, I let it chime a third time just for good measure and see if things look better.
If that fails then you can try making another account and seeing if the caps lock works in the new account. There might be some strange error on your account that would be corrected for in a new account. After that it gets more labor intensive. Do a system re-install, do an erase and install.
You might consider a trip to the apple genius bar there in Honolulu if can. The should be able to run through all that for you. You're still under warrantee so take advantage and get some help.
Oh, and just a disclaimer that I learned from Adam on the maccast podcast. Make a full, complete backup including a time machine and bootable (like superduper or carbon copy cloner) disk before you do any of the above or take the unit it for service.
    Hope this helps.

  • Caps Lock lights up but doesn't work in Mac OS (but does in Windows)

My Caps Lock button lights up but caps do not work in any Leopard programs. If I hold down the Shift key then caps will work.
However, I have Parallels and caps lock DOES work when running Windows.
I checked the Modifier Keys settings in keyboard preferences and they are set to the default.
I am new to Apple and have a Mac Book Pro that I bought in Spring 2008.
I searched the discussions but didn't see my situation...

  • Caps Lock LED not working in X unless I hold shift

Hi, I recently installed Arch, installed X and configured it as the wiki says, installed awesome and now I switched the language toggle to Caps Lock instead of Alt+Shift.
I hoped the LED would tell me what language I'm typing in. But I noticed the LED wasn't working (Num Lock LED does work however).
I looked on the forum and it said to use
    kbd_mode -u
to switch the keyboard to UTF-8 and it'll be fine.
Now Scroll Lock works too (it didn't before), but Caps Lock does something weird, it lights up for a split second then immediately turns back off. That unless I hold shift when I press Caps Lock, then it works fine, but I don't want to hold shift...
So how can I make it work?
EDIT: In the tty Caps Lock works fine.
    Thanks.

Standard troubleshooting procedures in order are power the iPhone off and on, Reset, Restore and if no change after and or all in order, call AppleCare (800) 694-7466 or make an appointment at an Apple Store if there is one nearby.
Although others may have experienced the same, this does not mean the majority have.

  • 200n Keyboard - Caps Lock inverted = no numbers + all files highlighted

Factory o/s Vista Home + recovery CD
Faults occurred sometime after installing wireless printer. Computer left unattended. Son heard lots of beeping.
Caps lock worked but text was inverted which also resulted in no numbers. Selecting a file from a list resulted in all files above being selected.
Many things tried, restored to previous point, keyboard checked with MS diagnostic tool OK. Eventually keyboard stopped working (same with external USB keyboard) and it was impossible to restore using Recovery disc.
Paid to have system restored to Factory settings.
Memory and HDD checked and refitted. On final update, no 20 of 27 - bleeping and small Filter Key window appeared and kept on appearing 10/20 times during updating. Still both problems occurred.
Purchased new HDD and Win 7 upgrade
Installed XP pro sp2, could not type numbers in product key
Clean installed Win 7, Caps lock inverted and no numbers with Keyboard, USB keyboard and On-line keyboard. Again all files highlighted.
System Trouble Shooting – No changes or updated necessary.
    System Restore – Error 0xC0003005
In Safe Mode – removed Norton leaving MS net 4, MS Silverlight, NVDIA driver.
    Wireless mouse works.
    Filter Key window appears sometimes.
Action Center – Richo memory stick controller incompatible, no card reader driver.
Can access msconfig but not mskey or msreg

  • Caps lock malfunction

Hi, I recently purchased a MacBook. I am encoutnering a problem with the Caps Lock Key. When in use it does not work on the number row and only displays the symbols. Is this posibly a hardware problem? Thanks in advance for your help!

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
    Try resetting the PRAM/NVRAM. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
If that doesn't help, try downloading and installing the 10.5.8 combo update available here.
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
If that doesn't help, how long have you had this MacBook?
Also, would you please click My Settings on the right side of this window and add the Mac OS X version number you are running to your profile. Much easier to trouble shoot with that information.
    Thanks!

  • [SOLVED]Switching Caps Lock with Shift_L

I have a broken left shift key, and it's a bit of a pain to type with. I often use an external keyboard, so this doesn't always bother me, but when I take my laptop with me somewhere, I would like to be able to quickly swap Caps and Left Shift. For a while, I've done that like this:
    xmodmap -e "keycode 66 = Shift_L NoSymbol Shift_L"
But xmodmap is deprecated, and causing problems with qt5 applications, so I want to ditch it and do the same thing with setxbmap instead. Now, xkb is really nice, it is full of built in options for common remaps, and a quick look around shows my I can use any one of these to change how caps lock works:
grp:caps_switch Caps Lock (while pressed), Alt+Caps Lock does the original capslock action
    grp:caps_toggle Caps Lock
    grp:shift_caps_toggle Shift+Caps Lock
grp:shift_caps_switch Caps Lock (to first layout), Shift+Caps Lock (to last layout)
    grp:alt_caps_toggle Alt+Caps Lock
    lv3:caps_switch Caps Lock
lv3:caps_switch_latch Caps Lock chooses 3rd level, acts as onetime lock when pressed together with another 3rd-level-chooser
    ctrl:nocaps Caps Lock as Ctrl
ctrl:swapcaps Swap Ctrl and Caps Lock
    grp_led:caps Caps Lock
    caps Caps Lock key behavior
caps:internal Caps Lock uses internal capitalization. Shift "pauses" Caps Lock
caps:internal_nocancel Caps Lock uses internal capitalization. Shift doesn't affect Caps Lock
caps:shift Caps Lock acts as Shift with locking. Shift "pauses" Caps Lock
caps:shift_nocancel Caps Lock acts as Shift with locking. Shift doesn't affect Caps Lock
caps:capslock Caps Lock toggles normal capitalization of alphabetic characters
caps:numlock Make Caps Lock an additional Num Lock
caps:swapescape Swap ESC and Caps Lock
caps:escape Make Caps Lock an additional ESC
caps:backspace Make Caps Lock an additional Backspace
caps:super Make Caps Lock an additional Super
caps:hyper Make Caps Lock an additional Hyper
caps:shiftlock Caps Lock toggles Shift so all keys are affected
    caps:none Caps Lock is disabled
caps:ctrl_modifier Make Caps Lock an additional Control but keep the Caps_Lock keysym
    compose:caps Caps Lock
compose:caps-altgr 3rd level of Caps Lock
    shift:breaks_caps Shift cancels Caps Lock
shift:both_capslock Both Shift-Keys together toggle Caps Lock
shift:both_capslock_cancel Both Shift-Keys together activate Caps Lock, one Shift-Key deactivates
None of those allow me to use caps lock as a normal shift. I'm trying to figure out how to rebind caps to work as a shift, but I want to have this in a script so that my external keyboard will stick with its default behavior, and I can just type "fixshift" when I unplug it. Basically, just manually switch the two with setxkbmap the way I did with xmodmap. Out of a long while searching, and /only/ finding advice to use one of the default options, and none on making my own, I've decided to come here.
    Any help, Arch-friends?

For the record, here's my solution:
This creates a custom key symbol to swap Caps and Shift:
    /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/custom
    partial modifier_keys
    xkb_symbols "swapcaps" {
    replace key <CAPS> { [ Shift_L ] };
    replace key <LFSH> { [ Caps_Lock ] };
This script prints a description of the keymap, adds the symbol to swap the two keys from that other file to the right line, and writes the new description to a temporary file... then compiles it!
    /usr/local/bin/fixshift
    #!/usr/bin/bash
    setxkbmap -print | sed '/xkb_symbols/ { s/"/+custom(swapcaps)"/2 }' > /tmp/fixshift
    xkbcomp /tmp/fixshift $DISPLAY > /dev/null 2>&1 &
Then I just set that program to run every time lightdm starts a session:
    /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf
    display-setup-script=/usr/local/bin/fixshift
    greeter-setup-script=/usr/local/bin/fixshift
    session-setup-script=/usr/local/bin/fixshift
And nothing more to it. Life is grand again.

  • Caps Lock - numbers

    Hi all,
I have Windows 7 installed with Bootcamp on a new MBP 15 inch. It is a Belgian Azerty keyboard. Problem is, when i activate the Caps-lock and type '1' , it displays a '&' instead (I use the Belgian(Apple) keyboard layout). With the other number keys, caps lock works just fine. Anyone know how to solve this?
    Thanks for any help.

  • Caps lock led light

Hi, my computer is notebook PC 2000-227CL, my caps lock work, but the led light does not turn on now? How do I fix this?

    There is this Apple note
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3909
but if it does not come on at all, there is probably a problem with the keyboard.
If you have not already, you might try removing the batteries from the keyboard for a few minutes, then putting them back in.

  • HT1338 My MacBook Pro (running Leopard 10.5.8) won't allow keyboard to type an upper case 'C' using the shift key...works fine with caps lock, or, with my Typinator workaround using double-typed lower case c (not always best). Any ideas?

My MacBook Pro keyboard won't type an upper case 'C' using the shift key... only with caps lock. Workaround has been to use Typinator by typing a double lower case c, not always the best solution. Mac is a refurbished model, which initially was fine. Apple tech helped me correct the quirk when it first appeared, but now it has returned and refuses fixes. Any ideas?

I'm willing to bet that this has something to do with iCloud.  I've been facing a frozen computer nearly every time I go into it.
In Activity Monitor I have seen two programs associate with iCloud that take up about 2.5 GB of memory (I only have 4 in the computer) -- causing everything to freeze.  One of these is called "iCloud Helper" and the other one is something like "Address Book Sync helper" -- I see parts of these names in the stuff you have posted.
I am at my wits' end with these and have written to Apple asking them to do away with these or fix them.  To get rid of the Address book sync thing I have gone into system preferences for iCloud and unchecked Contacts -- but then spontaneously it gets rechecked.  And oftentimes after I Force Quit the iCloud helper, it spontaneously turns on again.  My conclusion --- the iCloud is basically unusable.  It turns a Mac into the most useless, clogged, sluggish PC.  If this is happening to a lot of people's computers -- and I see no reason why yours or mine should be an exception -- these programs just might destroy Apple itself.
So -- I'm about to completely give up on iCloud, and I suspect that others will too unless this gets fixed.
    Cheers,
    Bob

  • Aluminum keyboard won´t work ? has the caps lock on !

i have a imac power g5 with 10.5.8 os x it have the key caps lock on but the imac won't recognize the keyboard and any key dont work so please i need help to fix it i don't have another keyboard right now
    Thank you everyones
    i have a imac powerPC G5
    processor 1.9 GHz
    memory 1.5GB
    version 10.5.8
and the keyboard aluminum model A1243

There were two versions of the model A1243 keyboard, and some G5 PowerMac (tower) users found that one of them worked, and the other didn't. There is an A version and a B version. And likely the same one which worked for the tower G5 would function with the iMac G5.
However this numbered designator is not an Aluminum keyboard
    Model Number
    A1243
    Order Number
    MB110LL/A, MB110LL/B
Or use a white USB keyboard from the early 2003-05 era such as those shipped with the iMac G4, and early iMac G5.
    This is an aluminum keyboard:
    Model Number
    A1242
    Order Number
    MB869LL/A
There were compact keyboards without numeric keypad, and with BTO computers, a full-size keyboard with numberic keypad were available only as an option. Several later model keyboards worked well with the Intel-based Mac computers of their era; so when there is an issue with an earlier PPC-based Mac, look into those keyboards fitted to the computer vintage.
So if the keyboard you have does not work, could be it was intended for use with a later Mac computer after 2005. I was sure to get at least one as-new spare Apple USB keyboard, to have on hand for my older Macs.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • What's wrong with the built-in keyboard on my macbook? The caps button does not work rite, no matter what letter button i push they all come out capitals and the number keys when pushed display the special characters instead of the numbers!

the built-in keyboard on my macbook is not functioning right, the number keys when pushed display the special characters instead of the numbers,
the caps button doesn't work at all, the letter buttons display capitals when pushed whether the caps button is on or off, the shift keys are also out of whack!!
It seems it somehow got relocated to the "0" button because if you push and hold the zero button down the keyboard seems to operate normally, the number keys display numbers when pushed the letter keys display lower case when pushed but release the zero button and your back in the twilight zone!! Can anybody help me resolve this issue? one more thing im using an external usb keyboard right now and it seems to function properly if that helps any.

You would do better in the actual macbook pro forums (this is not).
