Alot of issues. bad harddrive?

i have a 30gb 5th gen ipod,
and there are many things wrong with it.
first it responds very slowly when using it,
it will play a few songs, but then it will freeze, the back of it gets very hot, and i hear strange clicking noises coming from it, and if i don't reset it, it will literally start shaking on the table.
i don't know much about how ipods are built, but could this have something to do with the harddrive being messed up?
also, i just got a new computer because my old one crashed completely.
and i do not have my library backed up.
i tried numerous times to copy it to this computer using software such as yumipod and sharepod, but it will only do a few songs before the program stops responding, and i have to close it and restart my computer and try it again,
it does the same thing with every program.
i was going to restore the ipod to see if that helps,
but i don't want to do that without a back up of my music.
is there any other way to save my music?
i was thinking about taking it to the apple store but with previous ipods i've owned that had any problems, all that they would do is tell me it is corrupted and hand me a replacement one,
and if that happens i will still lose all of my music..
does anybody know what i can do to try to save my ipod, and most importantly my music?
or should i just give up hope on this thing..?
thankyou:)

All Apple refurbished products carry a 1 year warranty.  This implies they are fit for purpose.  Excepting minor damage like scratches and abrasions, everything else should be in order with the device itself.  Exchange or ask for a refund.  If still not happy then you can always take the matter up with a consumer group or trading standards.
I would be a little bit wary of any device that had an ill fitting case, it might be due to something not being positioned correctly.  Apple have a good reputation on the warranty side, so dont be afraid to exercise your consumer rights.
Personally, I would take it back for another.

Just want to avoild spending hours migrating everything across....

Yes, I can read but just can't write DVD's. I get:
This disc can’t be verified and might be unreliable. Try again using a new blank disc (error code 0x80020063).

  • Beige G3 boot from **** problem; open firmware issues; bad motherboard?

    Dear all,
I'm having huge boot/startup problems with my beige G3 that had been happily running OSX 10.3.9, but for purposes of this discussion we can (mostly) revert to OS 9. Originally, the machine was a G3 @300; was upgraded more than a year ago to a ZIF G4 @500.
To make a long story short, it won't boot from any hard drives, will not boot from any OS X CD, and will only occasionally boot from a 9.x startup CD (whether Apple or Norton Utilities). I think it's an open firmware issue, possibly caused by a bad motherboard (rev. 2).
All this started happening after I used techtool pro, but I think that's coincidence (even though I acknowledge that, for cops and computer users, there are no coincidences.) Also, as discussed below, I'm having the same problems with an HD that wasn't even in the computer when all these things began.
Here are some of the things I've done.
--repeatedly reset PRAM, both with key combinations and removing battery. The only time it will boot from a 9.x CD is after resetting PRAM.
    --removed all add-on PCI cards.
    --removed additional VRAM
--removed all memory cards and tried replacing one at a time.
--disconnected both existing hard drives and replaced with an older OS 9.x hard drive (approx 60 mb) that I'd used before. Also tried different ribbon cables.
    --unplugged floppy drive
--disconnected PCI ATA disk controller that I'd been using for running a large (1.8 gb) hard drive.
--regarding open firmware: readenv usually shows totally normal default AND installed settings. Using reset-all works fine -- at least it makes the machine reboot, but doesn't solve the problem. reset-nvram does NOT work -- says it's an "unknown word."
--using startup keys like holding down the option key, or shift key, or X key or cmd-option plus two others I can't remember, has no effect. Again, after I've tried any kind of reboot, the ONLY way to get the C-key at startup to boot the CD is by resetting the pram (key combination). Otherwise, the usual result of these experiments is a dark screen on startup -- nothing at all (and the LCD monitor tells me "no input.")
--regarding OSX: sometimes (and I emphasize sometimes) I can get the machine to start booting from an OSX 10.2 CD, but it won't complete the process. Sometimes I get a "prohibited" (as in no-parking, no-smoking) icon; sometimes it will start booting (grey screen, OS X Apple icon), then crash (horizontal grey and white jagged bars); sometimes it will show the OS 9 start icon (the tiny smiling Mac SE), but not boot at all.
--when I get the mac successfully booted with an OS 9.x CD (again, this works sometimes, but not always), the old hard drive with two partitions does show on the desktop and can be accessed. Using either disk repair or Norton Utilities shows the 9.2 system partition on the hard drive to be fine. But if I go to the startup disk control panel, confidently set the 9.2 partition as my startup disk, then reboot, there's no change. It won't boot and I'm back at square one.
--even when I do get successfully booted with 9.x, the machine will still occasionally crash for no reason -- ie when I'm moving a Window.
--the only thing I haven't done is slowed down the processor. It's a ZIF G4 bought more than a year ago from XLR8 your Mac. I'm running at the default 500 mhz, and it's never given me any trouble.
So I think it's a bad motherboard or ROM. Thoughts?
    Thanks.

The beige Mac is now operating happily again. My original tentative diagnosis remains the same (although still tentative): corrupted PRAM from bad battery, compounded by bad cables that wrote corrupted data to hard drives, and also (possibly) allowing Tech Tool Pro (a utility that I now regard with deep suspicion) to create a "virtual" startup partition.
A few things I've learned along the way that hopefully may be useful:
--remember that the Ex Post Facto utility can be used to help OS X startup, not just installation. This applies to hard drives, emergency CDs, installation CDs, etc. If you can boot into any working hard drive partition (OS 9 or a backup OS 10), then run Ex Post Facto (same program runs on either OS 9 or X -- don't ask me how) and tell it what system you want to start up from. Also, the utility has sometimes told me that the startup extensions on the disc that I wanted to boot up from were bad, and offered to fix them (which works).
--at least on my Mac (beige, v. 2 motherboard), resetting the CUDA button, resetting the PRAM, resetting Open Firmware and "draining" the memory by unplugging the computer and disconnecting the battery for several hours ALL DO DIFFERENT THINGS.
Specifically, if I'm having trouble booting (from a hard drive or a CD), the FIRST thing I do is restart and resetting the PRAM on the fly -- holding down command, option, P and R at startup, and waiting for the chimes (preferably at least 3-4 times).
If I do that and DON'T hear the chimes, that's my cue for my SECOND action -- restarting into open firmware (command, option O and F keys on startup). That should bring up the black text on white background open firmware screen. View other posts or apple support for details, but if you do PRINTENV and see a bunch of weird gibberish after the default/installed lists, you know that it was messed up and you need to clear it through reset nvram and reset all commands. Be aware some of these commands do or do not work depending upon what version of Open Firmware you have.
After I've rebooted with Open Firmware, then on restart I should be able to reset the PRAM on the fly. If that works, then either let the machine run and see what happens, or hold down the C command and see if it will boot from the CD
Usually, if I've fixed everything as above, the machine will boot into whatever version of OS 9 it finds on a hard drive. That's fine with me -- at that point, use Ex Post Facto to reboot into your OS X. (Before I forget: I used the shareware startup CD creator program BootCD to make an emergency boot CD based on OS 10.2.8 (which theoretically will support a beige mac in native fashion) and Disk Warrior, the god of disk repair utilities. Even though the CD should boot just by holding down the C key on startup, it doesn't -- but if I use Ex Post Facto to boot it, no problems (although the process is very slow -- be patient). Then I can fix almost anything using Disk Warrior.)
If none of the above works, then I'll try resetting the CUDA (on my beige minitower, it's a very small black button inconveniently located between a PCI slot and the side of the computer housing). Hold it down for 15 seconds. That should REALLY clear the PRAM. I know this does something different from the previous steps because this is the only action (except the battery disconnect -- next) that clears the date and time from the memory.
If all else fails, I will unplug the computer and disconnect the battery, then push the CUDA button for 15 seconds and let the machine sit overnight.
One final finding -- I thought I'd fixed everything, but both my hard drives suddenly quit working, I discovered that during all this repeated connect/disconnect of things, one of the male pins inside one of the connectors on my Acard ATA PCI card had broken off. Not good. Fortunately, the card had a second connector, which works fine. And I did some extensive shaking of the computer to make sure (I hope) that the broken pin hadn't landed on a circuit board.
All this took more than two weeks, and the advice of this board was much appreciated. Now I'm on to my next adventure -- trying to figure out why a combo Firewire/USB PCI card won't mount an external drive on Firewire, but will on USB. I've tried two cards with same result -- but a Firewire-only card works just fine.)
    Regards to all,

  • Z77A-GD65 power issue/bad system board?

Looking for advice. I am afraid its a bad board, but some symptoms point at power which also makes no sense.
This is what the WHOLE system should look like.
    MSI Z77A-GD65 system board
    Intel 3770K 3.5Ghz
    Anted Kuhler H20 620
    G.Skills RipJaws 16GB 1600Mhz DDR3 F3-14900CL9Q-16GBXL (on the test list)
Asus nVidia GTX 680 video card
    OCX Vertex 3 256MB SSD
    Seagate 500GB data drive
    Razer Lycosa Keyboard
    Razer DeathAdder Mouse
Antec Sonata IV case with Neo ECO 620W power supply
It seems to me that 620W should be more than enough. According to my calculations thats roughly 330W of power draw against a 620W powersupply.
I am not currently over clocking.
So what the system does look like is:
If I connect the 500GB drive then windows starts rebooting as soon as the Windows logo comes up.
If I place all four sticks of RAM in the system windows starts rebooting as soon as the Windows logo comes up.
If I leave the 500GB standard sata drive off and only use 3 sticks of RAM... well we get a solid system and I am writing this message on it.
3 sticks of ram appear to work in any 3 slots and allow the system to boot, except 1,3,4. That combo also resulted in the reboots at the windows logo.
I first thought it was RAM, originally I was using Corsair Vengeance. I saw some posts here about people having the same problem, and noted that the Corsiar RAM was not tested and switch to a the tested G.Skill instead.
Any ideas? It does not completely seem like a System board issue, but it certainly should not be power. All heat levels are well within normal and as I said the system works great if I leave off the drive and one stick of RAM.
    Thanks guys....

System torn down, and put back together. (Found out I was out of Thrermal Compound, so I had to run to the store to get some.)
No long leads, only 9 stand offs matching each mount point on the systemboard.
Back together... problem is the exact same.
However, back to the hard drive issue. I decided to play with that since I was getting no where with 4 sticks of RAM.
What I have discovered is that with NO sata cable connecting the drive to the system board, if I try to power the two 250GB standard sata drives the system reboots just as the Windows logo should come up.
The fact that this behavior is so close to the RAM behavior... I am back to thinking its a power issue, though system board is still a chance... its just easier to buy a new better power supply than the Antec Neo Power 620 that came with the case. (I have not ever had a problem with Antec before, and will likely just buy one of their higher end power supplies to replace it, but I think I will try it next, just in case.)
I am not seeing any strange behavior power wise as far as any monitor shows... but connecting power to a sata drive that is NOT connected with a sata cable and causing a reboot just screams power at me.
Anymore thoughts today. In the mean time off to play Secret World with just the SSD and two sticks of RAM, which still runs rock solid.

  • Known issue : Bad CASE definition files?

    Hey guys,
Surprised there isn't a topic on this already.
Since early this morning I have noticed almost all of our e-mails being dropped by CASE - customer e-mails, test e-mails, basically everything externally coming in.
Called Cisco support and apparently they have had a 6-7 tickets with customers complaining about the same thing.
Until that happens, I have change positively identified spam = quarantine instead of dropping.
I suspect a bad CASE definitions file - typo in the regex probably ;)

This should have been pushed and corrected.  Please run 'antispamupdate ironport force' from the CLI on the appliance(s), and assure that you are seeing a current time stamp on the rules.
This would have affected 8.5+ revisions, from the information I was provided earlier today.

  • PRICING ISSUE BADI ME_DEFINE_CALCTYPE- URGENT

    Hi Guys,
My requirement was to trigger new pricing on change of Delivery Date. I have to retrigger pricing only if there is any change in fields EKKO-INCO1, EKKO-INCO2, EKPO-MATNR and EKPO-ADRNR.
For the same I have implemented three badi's and one pricing routine.
    BADI's are -
<b>ME_DEFINE_CALCTYPE</b> - <b><u>Method DEFINE_CALCTYPE</u></b> : Setting the Flag CH_X_LF_CALCTYPE If there is difference between the old value and new value of Fields mentioned above.
<b>ME_CHECK_ALL_ITEMS</b> - <b><u>Method RECALCULATE_ITEMS</u></b> Setting the Flag CH_X_RECALCULATE.  If there is change in the Incoterms field at PO Header.
In these BADI's I am checking if there is any change in the above mentioned fields. It retrigger the Pricing.
I have implemented one more <b>BADI (ME_PROCESS_PO_CUST-Method PROCESS_SCHEDULE)</b> which will trigger the pricing process, If we change the delivery date. This will pick the current delivery date and EXPORT it to memory ID which will be later IMPORTED to pass on this date to pricing header based on which the Pricing will be done on the changed delivery date. ( I hope I am correct here )
I have a pricing routine for one of the condition type in pricing. I am exporting the changed delivery date to the routine and replacing the value of KOMK-PRSDT with this new delivery date.
The issue is, When I do changes for the first time the pricing is working correctly. And I am able to see the PO field values for which the condition record is matched in the pricing analysis .But when I am saving the PO and again changing the values of Delivery date and any one of the fields mentioned. Pricing Analysis shows the same old values of PO fields for which the condition records were matched on last pricing cycle.
Please let me know where I am wrong or where I can correct to display the current values of PO fields for which the condition records matched in the Pricing Analysis.

  • Satellite M115-S1061 - display issue - bad colors

According to my daughter, her Satellite laptop running XP-SP2 suddenly went dim. At first I thought it might be the backlight inverter so I obtained a replacement but changing that failed to make any improvement.
Experimenting with the display settings it became apparent that many of the display colors were not what they should have been and I began to think something had happened to the LCD or its cabling causing the loss of one of the primary colors i.e.: blue however, upon rebooting I observed plenty of blue from the diplay until XP fully booted.
While changing themes and setting in an attempt to obtain a mere usable display, it became increasingly obvious that there is some type of video inversion going on.
That said, I can find no setting that would could cause this or any similar report of this malady. I have swept for any virus and gone back several restore points with no findings or imprivement.
The driver has not been updated so there is no ability to rollback to an earlier iteration and a search for an update indicates the current dirver is the latest.
Also, as noted, during initial boot-up the display appears to be of relatively normal brightness and the colors are as they should be...
It is not until the XP desktop launches that things go astray.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as school is back in session and I either get this resolved and get a new laptop!
    TIA,
    Bob

    Hi
    > Also, as noted, during initial boot-up the display appears to be of relatively normal brightness and the colors are as they should be... It is not until the XP desktop launches that things go astray.
According to your description I believe that this might be a graphic card problem.
I would really recommend connecting an second, external display/monitor to this notebook to check if the same bad colors would be visible on the external monitor.
If the same bad colors would appear at the same time on the second monitor then the issue could be really related to a bad GPU chip
In such case a replacement (motherboard) would be necessary

  • Rejected Mail Issue - Bad return address

    All,
I am getting a small precentage of mail from my server returned with to my users with the error:
Your message was not delivered because the return address was refused.
The return address was '<[email protected]>'
I cant find much more detail in the error logs, but Im assuming this mail is being rejected by the mail server of the intended recipient which is not in the same domain as mine. Is there anyway to verify which server is rejecting the mail? Is there anything I can do to fix this issue as both the sender and recipient are valid accounts. TIA>
    Pete Serafin

I have looked in the headers, but there isnt anything that looks bad in them. I should also state that this issue is only on replies. Original emails sent to these addresses that are being bounced get through without any problem. Also and maybe more importantly, it is only on replies to certain domains ( such as AOL ). Any other ideas?

  • HR custom authorization issues/BADI to be used for some customization

We can develop custom authorization object in HR and run RPUACG00 to generate include MPAUTCON.Is it possible to include some customizations to the MPAUTCON program to accomplish some of our requirements.
If not can you please suggest me a BADI/User exit which can be used to develop some customization on a specific field, which can be called at the times the HR Master data is being changed/displayed/created.
Thanks in adavnce for the answers.

    Hi Kiranm,
the MPPAUTCON program (or MPPAUTZZ in non-contextual mode) is automatically generated by the RPUACG00 report.
But you can modify it to add custom controls.

  • Flash Pro CC to CS6 fla issue - Bad library items and new library items with unicode names

I've noticed a strange issue when opening fla files in Flash Pro CS6 that have been edited in Flash Pro CC. If there are library items in the fla with names that include symbols such as ">" or ".", unicode named symbols are created and the original symobls are unuseable. There are many symbols that cause the issue and the symbols just have to be a part of the name.
    Steps to reproduce:
    1) Create an fla file in Flash Pro CC.
    2) Add a single movieclip to the library with a symbol name of ">".
    3) Save the file.
    4) Open the file in Flash Pro CS6.
    Results:
Library contains 2 symbols, one named ">" and one named "&#062".
    Expected:
There's one library symbol named ">".
After that double clicking the symbol named ">" will do nothing and instances of the symbol will have all their content removed.
This issue is breaking a JSFL script I wrote that loops the library items. When the script attempts to access item.layerCount the script errors out. My team is blocked from using Flash Pro CC in combination with Flash Pro CS6 because of this issue. The only good solution I can think of is to all switch to CC at the same time to avoid converting our fla files to CS6 from CC.
Any info on a fix for this issue would be appreciated.

The dialog you get when you open the FLA in CS6 is that new features may not be available in CS6 so you should save it to a new file to avoid corruption. There's no "save down" from CC to CS6 (yet). So opening the file in CS6 isn't advisable in the first place.
That said, library items are supported between them both so to your point, yes, I get the same exact behavior. A single symbol named ">" in CC produces 2 library items in CS6 named ">" and "&#062", and the original item is lost. Although I'm not sure where I'd classify this issue being you shouldn't be opening a newer version file from an older version of the application. I did also try XFL, same issue. If they decide to create a save-down to CS6 and this still exists, I'd consider it a bug.
As for a fix, I think about the only thing that comes to mind is identify the characters causing issues and run a JSFL in CC to rename the library item temporarily to something you know will work fine. Then once back in CS6, run the JSFL opposite to convert them back to what you want. e.g. "this > that" to "this XYZ that" in CC, then "this XYZ that" to "this > that" in CS6. Shouldn't be too hard to map as long as the replacement is unique.

  • OpenSSH 4.3p1 Compile Issues (Bad OpenSSL Headers)

I was upgrading the version of OpenSSH on my other systems and thought I would also upgrade it on my Mac. The distributed version was OpenSSH 3.8p1 IIRC. First I find that the version of Zlib is out of date. Not surprising and very excusable. So I fix that and find that the installed OpenSSL library is 0.9.7i current and secure but, the OpenSSL header files don't match the library. The installed headers are for OpenSSL 0.9.7b. This means that I can't correctly compile anything that uses OpenSSL. The fix was easy and I just built OpenSSL 0.9.7i and copied the headers to /usr/include. Now how do I report this to Apple support so they will distribute the right headers, and possible an updated OpenSSH, at the next update?

Lone_Wolf, I don't think there's a need for that bright-yellow highlighter. I'm using the default forum theme and it stands out a bit too much.
It's used for [ ins ] i.e. insertion. It's useful to show where somebody made a typo or to highlight my own edit.
I think the issue has been solved anyway.

  • New upload issue - bad photo rotation on homepage upload

When I upload my homepage from iPhoto 5.02 to Homepage, some (but not all) the photos that I had rotated to portrait format have reverted to their original landscape format - so they are displayed sideways. They are all on the correct orientation in the page that iPhoto displays as you compose - it must be a problem somewhere in the upload.
Can anyone offer any help? Am I missing something? Or is this a new glitch in the upload process?
    Paul G,
    Tasmania

Further to this - a bit of perusal of the discussions under the searches "photo rotation" and "photo orientation" show a varying bunch of problems relating to differences of photo orientation between the full-size and the original. (I have checked, and my photos that Homepage is displaying wrongly also display wrongly within iPhoto in edit mode). They all seem to crop up in May - none before, with one exception; issues of photo rotation when syncing to iPod Photo, which crop up from Feb/March.
So my guess is that there was a fix for the iPod sync problem, that has thrown everything else out. Homepage uploads, slideshows, possibly photo-albums, export to iDVD - all the things that work off the (incorrectly oriented) full-size, rather than the correctly oriented thumbnail. (I expect the preview of Homepage works from the thumbnail, whereas the actually uploaded page is processed from the full-sized image).
Another factor might be that all (?) that specify their camera are using Canon, models that automatically embed camera orientation. They note that iPhoto used to orient the photos automatically on import, but now they need to manually rotate. Could just mean a lot of Apple users choose Canon though...
I've reported it as a bug, so I guess we just wait for 5.0.3. In the meantime, faulty homepages are an unfortunate public advertisement of an embarrassing Apple iGlitch.

Is there a way to load the running system you already paid for onto a new harddrive??

Recovery Disks can be use to install original software on a new hdd when you boot from them. But as Big_Dave mentions we need more info on what is not going right, what model of PC you have and which hdd you bought. For instance some models have trouble wth very large hdd's.

  • Speed Stepping Issue - bad  performance on MBP 2.4

    Hi,
My MBP 2.4 with 4 GB of Ram running 10.4.11 never really ran as fast as it should. My macbook 2.0 continuously performed better when running audio apps such as Logic 7 & 8 as well as Ableton Live. I was having many audio drop outs and error messages, while watching the CPU meter in both programs continually go through the roof. Checking Activity monitor showed no abnormal signs. My local Apple store has said there is nothing wrong with my computer. It seems crazy, when even my 4 year old G5 performs better and achieves more tracks.
Then I found this thread (http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=610592#610592) at the Ableton Live forum and used Coolbook to monitor my Speed Stepping and sure enough I found my problem. When the CPU is under a lot of stress from programs it doesn't step-up in speed. I'm noticing my CPU jumping between 1200mHz - 1800mHz but very rarely reaching it's potential of 2400mHz. So I registered Coolbook and have set a few steps and sure enough it's working very well. I'm getting the performance I've always hoped for. Running the Live 7 performance test, it's scoring on par with Windows laptops with the same chip and a significantly better score than running it without Coolbook.
Running XP under Bootcamp works very well with Ableton Live showing simlar results to OSX with Coolbook suggesting this speed stepping problem is OSX.
There are many people with this problem on many audio forums ... I don't want to resort to a 3rd party app to get the performance my machine should give me out of the box. Is there anybody out there with the Santa Rosa chip that isn't seeing this problem?

I too am having major issues with my 2.2Ghz Macbook pro.. as is my friend who has the exact same set up as I do.
Ableton hits 50% CPU load then goes crazy and starts stuttering and popping when it hits a heavy CPU load spike for a fraction of a second, obviously caused by the speed stepping problem. It's not helping. The fact that running the same software in bootcamp under windows removes this isssue, is very poor form.
PLEASE Apple, can you work with the guys at Ableton to sort this issue out. Can you PLEASE release a patch for Macbook Pro Santa Rosa owners so that we can disable the speed stepping while specific applications are open, or completely.
We know for a fact that the CPU cycles down to around 800Mhz with speed stepping.... and then it has to ramp back up to 2200Mhz for heavy CPU load times... unfortunately it's just not doing it quickly enough.. and causing Ableton to splutter and stutter and cough it's way through our tracks that we are producing!
PLEASE HELP! I know you can!

  • Fan or hard disc issue/bad noise and lock up

    Hi!
I have got this really annoying problem. After some time on, my powerbook spins up. I do not know if it is the fan or the hard disc. Then the computer goes thinking and I can not do anything just right after. Then I have to turn it off. I have tried resetting pmu and reinstalling mac os X without success. Anyone have an idea what could be the problem or if I should hand it over to technicians as it might be a hardware problem?
    Powerbook G4 1.5ghz Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Hi, kefas. Your 1.5GHz Powerbook is Aluminum, not Titanium. For the best suggestions from other people who are familiar with your model, you will want to repost in the 15" Aluminum PB discussions area. Good luck!
