Alt attributes: used or ignored or penalized by Google?

I've never been a hard-core SEO person. Mainly just sticking
with good
markup and good content and passing the buck when clients
what true SEO
consulting (mainly telling them to hire a SEO consultant for
that).
I got into a discussion a while ago regarding the effects,
either pro or
con, of using alt attributes as your main headings.
I know that Header tags are relatively important for Search
Engine rankings.
You want decent keywords in your headers.
On many of the sites I build, I reserve the H1 Tag for the
site logo, which
is usually an image:
<h1><img src="WidgetsInc.gif" alt="Widgets Inc.:
Quality Widget Provider for
the Greater NorthWest" /></h1>
And when I do HTML production for other graphic designers,
they often want
at least the H2 tags to also be image-based.
IMO, I've always considered the above completely valid and a
good way to
handle things. Since alt attributes are truly supposed to be
content (if for
no other reason than it's proper accessibility), google
should read them and
treat it as it would text wrapped in the H1 tags.
The counter argument I heard was that google ignores alt
attributes because
they could be spoofed. The example being something like:
<h1><img src="CocaCola.gif" alt="CocaCola rules,
Pepsi sucks!" /></h1>
And, I thought, hmm...that's actually a valid point. What's
everyone's
thoughts on this? Any known data regarding this? Does Google
ignore alt
attributes?
If it does, would image replacement techniques be any more
valid?
Specifically the practice of using a background image to show
the image, and
moving the actual text off-screen using something like left:
-999. That
would produce the same visual result and be (almost) as
accessible. However,
I was under the impression that Google ignores negative
positioned items for
the same reason as the above argument regarding alt
attributes (they can be
spoofed with fake keywords).
Thoughts? Opinions? Suggestions? Conspiracy Theories?
-Darrel

Hi Darrel,
I actually have 6 identical pages in a test folder of mine
where I
eventually will know for sure... I think.
The 3 pages are done with different methods as in the one you
describe
(negative text indent) and one that uses an image with an alt
attribute
and one that uses Thierry's perfect IR. They have the exact
same short
content. The last 3 pages uses the above methods but without
any alt or
title attributes.
It's only a week since I uploaded the pages so it's too early
to say
which will work better if any difference at all. I see the
folder has
been visited by googles spiders but no results yet.
Not much help I know but I also didn't knew for sure... thats
why :)

  • Add Alt Attribute Info to a Custom Button

    I have created an alternative to editing the
    “whtbar.js” file to give an image alt attribute
    information. We have a custom button in our help file that needed
    alt information, but we had already incorporated the text into the
    button’s image and did not want to add the text label. We
    also did not like the visual border treatment that adding a text
    label did to the button.
    I wrote this JavaScript function that will not only
    accomplish this, but it will also capture the functionality that
    RoboHelp creates for the OnClick event handler and duplicates it in
    an OnKeyPress event handler for that same button. I have
    successfully tested this script in both IE (IE 6.0) and Mozilla
    (Firefox 1.5), and it appears to work fine.

    The OP probably tried to attach it to their post, but it was stripped by the forum software. Hopefully they can show a screenshot image (using the camera icon in the web interface) to display the coding.

  • SPRY GALLERY STATIC - main image caption from alt attribute?????

    I have been searching and digging for an answer to this question, but nothing comes up... the web , discussions, spry documentation... there is no joy to be had where the static gallery is concerned.
    Please, could someone here enlighten me? I am trying to figure out how to add captions with static links. I have a working version of the gallery with thumbnails embedded on the page, but am stuck trying to bring the ALT attribute into the main image.
    I have just finished a redesign of my boyfriend’s site, which is image heavy and uses the dynamic gallery in many of its pages (no problem with captions there). I am trying to replace the XML with static content for usability, tracking and general search engine issues.  I could post a link to my static version if this helps clarifying the problem.
    Help would be hugely appreciated.

    Please read what I am writing to you.

    Thank you Ben, for your informative reply and link!
    I can see the advantages of an html dataset, it makes a lot of sense, but the problem I am trying to solve right now is due to the fact that the spry gallery static does not use any dataset at all, which is actually great, but I can’t find any information on how to add titles to the main images.
    Maybe this will clarify... my test page < http://www.theoland.com/art/spryGalleryStatic.htm > is based on this example:
    < http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/spry/demos/gallery_pe/static/china.html > - here, the embedded thumbnails are linked directly to the main images... no xml, no dataset... but, unfortunately, no titles either... are there any scripts that would help solve this? Can the gallery_init.js be modified to grab the alt or title tag?
    The site has validated as it is (gallery test not included), but the dynamic pages are definitely not search engine friendly. The static gallery_pe would be a lovely alternative.
    Can you help?
    Even though you might not think so, your static gallery does have a database of sorts albeit in the form of images placed in a folder. This is called a flat database because it does not have the different relationship tiers of the likes of MySQL.
    To update your database, you simply add/remove/change an image and to link that data to your web page you add/remove/change the link; exactly the same process as with MySQL.
    The problem that you are faced with is that, except for the name, width, height, size, encode type, there is no information attached to the image that you can use for a caption or title.
    That is why I suggested using an HTML table so that you can marry your image up to some useful information. No JavaScript required! These sorts of tables have been in use for more two decades to show the same as what you are showing in your static gallery; but without the fancy features that JavaScript (in our case Spry) adds.
    These pages give us the ultimate in search engine intimacy.
    Having established the above, we make use of the HTML table to create a Spry dataset on the same page. Nothing else changes.The Spry dataset can then be used to incorporate the fancy features that you so desparately want all without XML.
    JavaScript (in our case Spry) data is not search engine friendly, but because we already have the data in our static HTML table we do not have to wory about that.
    The end result is a good looking site that is search engine friendly.

  • Oracle 10.1.2 - HTML; assigning alt attributes to tabs

    I have created a template that uses tabs for navigation but the <alt> value for each tab only appears when the tab itself is not selected - the <alt> attribute is shown on rollover but if the tab is clicked on, no <alt> value displays. The tab region is within the #BODY of the page's UI but has no Oracle classes or IDs assigned to it (so I can't target anything using CSS).
    How can I assign an <alt> value to an active (selected) tab?

    So I understand that we can get all the (portal) functionality of Portal 10.1.4 by upgrading the application server from 10.1.2.0.0 to 10.1.2.1.0. But I'm curious what is the application server functionality that one gets with 10.1.2.0.2 and not with 10.1.2.1.0? Is it (just) Reports, Forms and Bi Beans?
    I'd love a link to someplace that states this explicitly.

  • Dynamically created "alt" attribute not displaying

    Hi, I have created a details page for our company product, which is diplayed dynamically. I have on this page a dynamic image as well thats pulled from my database. As with any image on the web, I want to set the alt attribute, but of course this has to be dynamic as well. I have done this it seems, as I view my source code from a browser, I can see that the alt has a value there and that it is the correct value. My question is, why doesnt this display when I mouse over the image? Is there something I am forgetting to add? Is this attribute deprecated? here is my code for the alt cfoutput:
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    <cfoutput>
              <table align="center">
                <tr>
                  <td><cfif rsDetails.image1 NEQ "">
                      <a href="images/#rsDetails.image1#" target="_blank"><img src="images/#rsDetails.image1#" alt="#rsDetails.item#" /></a>
                    </cfif></td>
                </tr>
              </table>
            </cfoutput>
    Here is the source code from the browser that shows there is an alt value:
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    <table align="center">
        <tr>
           <td>
             <a href="images/60K19DL.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="images/60K19DL.jpg" alt="60K19/DL" /></a>
           </td>
        </tr>
    </table>
    I hope this is easy to understand without going into lengthy detail. Thanks for any help!

    Ok I understand what you're saying now. lol I did try my code without the <a> tag but still didn't work. SO thats kinda weird.
    However, until you pointed it out, I didn't realize his site didn't have the mouse tips in firefox or that other browsers didn't support it, so I guess its not that important after all...the tips I mean.
    I hate IE too! but unfortunately when dealing with an online wholesale site, I must use and develop for IE.
    Anyway, thanks for the help! I may try the title attribute, but I think as long as I have the alt for SEO then I am fine.

  • Populating CRM marketing attributes using the APD

    Hi Experts
    We are having problems with populating CRM marketing attributes using the APD. When we run our process we get the error message:
    CRMBW_ATTR_WRITE005: Error when processing function module CRMBW_UPDATE_BPMKT_5. Message no. RSAN_MDL024
    As you can see, we are using the new function module CRMBW_UPDATE_BPMKT_5 since the old CRMBW_UPDATE_BPMKT did not work either.
    Do we have to add a reference to a infoobject in transaction CRMBWTARGETS? We have not done this because the marketing attribute in CRM doesn’t have decimals and all the objects in BI have. Could this be the cause of the error?
    Kind regards
    Erik

    Hi Ramesh,
    Thanks for quick reply.
    I have already followed the procedure you have described. Since there is not common objects between ODS and Bpatner infoobject, i am not able to do mapping.
    for eg. my ZBPARTNER infoobject has attributes like zfooty, ztennis and zrugby but my ODS has char name , char value, counter for multiple values infoobjects.
    I am following the example in the demo content to work out the process but could not understand how the data is getting uploaded from ODS to Business partner.

  • Is this possible???? (About Image alt attribute)

    I have been assigned a wierd task for my project. We have alt
    attributes in the image tag which seems to be throwing up some
    issues with our clients. For the same reason, I have to remove alt
    attribute from all the image tags. The client wants something
    globally i.e instead of manually opening the jsp files, searching
    for image tags & removing the same, He wants me to check if
    Dreamweaver has any feature which will remove alt attribute from
    all the image tags in the project. This is to save time. (since
    there are around 700 pages!!!!)
    Any ideas??

    Alt attribute values cannot cause problems.
    What *is* the nature of the issue?

  • List of SQL tables and attributes used in SSRS reports

    Hi,
    I have around 450-500 reports deployed in SSRS reporting server.
    All these reports are built on SQL from multiple databases, and these databases are having unnecessary tables and attributes.
    My requirement is to clean the unused tables and attributes from the databases. For this, I need the list of SQL tables and attributes used in these 450-500 SSRS reports.
    Is there any way to get this data?
    Regards,
    RK

    Hi RK,
    According to your description, you want to get a list of the tables and attributes used in all reports.
    In your scenario, you can query the ReportServer.dbo.Catalog table to get Report name, data source name, dataset name, and query used in the dataset with query below:
    WITH XMLNAMESPACES ( DEFAULT 'http://schemas.microsoft.com/sqlserver/reporting/2010/01/reportdefinition', 'http://schemas.microsoft.com/SQLServer/reporting/reportdesigner' AS rd )
    SELECT ReportName = name
    ,DataSetName = x.value('(@Name)[1]', 'VARCHAR(250)')
    ,DataSourceName = x.value('(Query/DataSourceName)[1]','VARCHAR(250)')
    ,CommandText = x.value('(Query/CommandText)[1]','VARCHAR(250)')
    ,Fields = df.value('(@Name)[1]','VARCHAR(250)')
    ,DataField = df.value('(DataField)[1]','VARCHAR(250)')
    ,DataType = df.value('(rd:TypeName)[1]','VARCHAR(250)')
    --,ConnectionString = x.value('(ConnectionProperties/ConnectString)[1]','VARCHAR(250)')
    FROM ( SELECT C.Name,CONVERT(XML,CONVERT(VARBINARY(MAX),C.Content)) AS reportXML
    FROM ReportServer.dbo.Catalog C
    WHERE C.Content is not null
    AND C.Type = 2
    ) a
    CROSS APPLY reportXML.nodes('/Report/DataSets/DataSet') r ( x )
    CROSS APPLY x.nodes('Fields/Field') f(df)
    ORDER BY name
    For more information, please refer to this similar thread:

  • It seems you cannot clone objects with attributes using lazy loading in JPA

    I have an entity with an attribute using lazy loading:
    @Entity
    public class B {
    @ManyToOne(fetch=FetchType.LAZY)
    private A a;
    @Entity
    public class A {
    Assume the following code:
    A a1 = new A();
    A a2 = new A();
    B b1 = EntityManager.find(B.class, ...);
    b1.setA(a1);
    B b2 = b1.clone();
    b2.setA(a2);
    Now with lazy loading enabled I get b1.getA() == a2 instead of b1.getA() == a1. Moreover, the debugger displays the same value holder in b1 and b2 for the attribute a. It appears as if cloning does not make a (deep) copy of the value holder managing the attribute a.
    How can I create a copy b2 of b1, such that the value holder managing a in b1 is a different object as the value holder managing a in b2?
    Thanks, Thomas.

    I have filed a bug to have this addressed in Oracle TopLink 11gR1. I would recommend you file a bug against TopLink Essentials in GlassFish or if you have a support contract report the issue to metalink to have the issue resolved.
    If this is urgent I did try fixing the issue with a small helper method using some reflection. This method is simplified through its throwing of Exception. If you wish to use something like this I would recommend proper error handling.
         * Helper method for cloning an entity and fixing the woven value-holders to
         * complete a proper shallow cloning.
        public static Employee clone(Employee entity) throws Exception {
           Employee clone = entity.clone();
           // Now fix the cloned ValueHolder references
           Field[] fields = entity.getClass().getDeclaredFields();
           for (int index = 0; index < fields.length; index++) {
               Field field = fields[index];
               if (field.getName().startsWith("_toplink_")) {
                   field.setAccessible(true);
                   ValueHolderInterface vhi = (ValueHolderInterface)field.get(entity);
                   Object value = vhi.isInstantiated() ? vhi.getValue() : null;
                   field.set(clone, new ValueHolder(value));
           return clone;
        }Doug

    Can I grant permission to write in specific attribute "comment attribute " using security groups "Domain User "??

    Hi,
    Open Active Directory Users and Computers.
    On the View menu, select Advanced Features.
    Right-click the object for which you want to assign, change, or remove permissions, and then click Properties.
    On the Security tab, click Advanced to view all of the permission entries that exist for the object.
    To assign new permissions on an object or attribute, click Add.
    Type the name of the group, computer, or user that you want to add, and then clickOK.
    In the Permission Entry for ObjectName dialog
    box, on the Object and Properties tabs,
    select or clear the Allow or Deny check
    boxes, as appropriate.

  • Oracle scheduler : Setting job attributes using Enterprise Manager

    Hi,
    I have created below job and set the attribute "'raise_events" using the dbms_scheduler.set_attribute procedure.
    begin
    dbms_scheduler.create_job
    ( 'ebj_A', job_action =>
    '/tmp/job_A.ksh',
    job_type => 'Executable',
    enabled => false ,
    auto_drop =>false) ;
    dbms_scheduler.set_attribute
    ( 'ebj_A' , 'raise_events' , dbms_scheduler.job_run_completed);
    end;
    Now I am creating the same job using the Enterprise Manager (GUI).
    I donot see any where to set the attribute (Raise_events) using GUI.
    Please can you tell me can we set that attribute using the Enterprise manager or not.
    If yes please let me know how.
    Thanks in advance.
    Sreenath.

    Hi ,
    I am modified my question.
    We could set the value for "raise_events" attribute using Dbms_Scheduler.Set_Attribute.
    Can we also set the value for the "raise_events" attribute using the EM.(GUI).
    Please let me know.
    Thanks in advance.
    Sreenath.
