Alternate to long long in Solaris 10
Hi,
Is there an alternate to long long data type in Solaris? We aren't able to find one.
We have tried using xarch=v9 and something like xsupport=ultra; But we can't execute it on a 32-bit machine.
Hence we need a substitute for long long data type to compile and execute on a 32-bit machine.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Chakra
Type long long is supported in 32-bit programs on Solaris, using Sun compilers. Example:
#include <stdio.h>
int main()
long long ll = 123456789;
long long xx = ll * ll;
printf("result = %lld\n", xx);
return 0;
You can compile this code with the C or C++ compiler with no special options.
What kind of alternative did you have in mind?
The -xarch=v9 option sets the target architecture, not just the sizes of data types. When you compile -xarch=v9, you get code that runs only on a v9 system, and you cannot mix it with 32-bit code.

Shockwave standalone installers ("alternates") no longer available?
The situation is basically one where I can still easily
download the standalone alternates for Flash Player, but I cannot
for Shockwave player. I'd write Adobe about this but they have no
e-mail, and seemingly no way to contact them about this issue. I
did write their webmaster however.
For example, here's the page for flash player:
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14266&sliceId=1
The pages for the Shockwave alternates no longer worked as of
yesterday but today they fixed the page.
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/alternates/#sp
However when I go to the page, I want to download the
Internet Explorer full version of Shockwave player while in
Firefox. It just redirects me to the Get Shockwave page instead of
giving me the actual download.
All I'm trying to do is download -- while in firefox -- the
IE version of Shockwave 11 as a standalone installer, instead of
having to install Shockwave from in Internet Explorer. Am I missing
something here?
Thanks guysI'm pretty sure there's no difference between the IE and
Netscape
variants of the installers. Try:

How long for Solaris 10 6/06 CDs?
How long before Sun will have the Solaris Media Kit containing the latest release 6/06 for purchase? Just curious.
Thanks.I've seen this before. Sometimes the installation doesn't prompt for a root password, and you can't login as root. Just power-off the system and start in failsafe mode. Then mount the root partition(it asks you if you'd like to do that) and edit /[mountpoint]/etc/shadow and remove the encrypted passwd string:
root:R1yP.BOK1xTeU:6445::::::
becomes
root:::::::
Then reboot, choose command-line login and log in as root.

Converting a Wide String to unsigned long long?
Hi there,
I am looking for a way to convert a string to unsigned long long on
Solaris. On AIX and Linux, there is wcstoull. However, I do not find
that in solaris. So, I plan to use swscanf ( str, L"%llu", &val).
However, running thru Rational Purify, each call to swscanf leaks 1
byte.
Anyone has a 3rd solution other than the two above? Or maybe there
is fix to the swscanf leak?
Thanks in advance,

Hi!
Can anyone tell me where do I download Solaris 8 for Intel?
When I can use Solaris for SPARC will I have any problems

Thanks
TomYou can no longer download Solaris for Intel. You can order it @

When you get it sucessfully installed you should not see any difference in command set from The SPARC version. -
XGL/XIL graphics in future Solaris
I am aware that the xgl and xil libraries are not going to be supported long for Solaris. (An initialization call to xil actually sends a warning to stdout to this effect)
Does anyone know what a good migration plan away from these libraries is? I'm thinking OpenGL may be viable to replace xgl, but what about xil?
Any thoughts on this matter are much appreciated!
Robert QuinnWell, anything with "Demo" or "Source" in the title you can delete usually without any problems.
It looks like everything in your list is X11 related. Its really a question for you. If you plan to perform TOTAL CLI type administration on this machine, you can delete the X11 stuff completely. This of course assumes there in nothing in the SunONE application software suite which doesn't require X11 capabilities for configuration. I've never used the SunONE app server but I SERIOUSLY doubt it does. More then likely its administration is browser based.
BUT, if you want to perform some limited X11 display back stuff from time to time, you're going to need the X11 stuff. -

Thank you,
Philip SpiegelI'm affraid you should say Solaris bye-bye. Oracle will no longer supports Solaris Intel. Install Linux and you are welcome.

Flash 8 vs. FLash MX 2004
This is a Flash 8 vs. Flash MX 2004 issue...
Anyone else noticing a difference saving files over a network
from Flash 8. I have never had a problem with Flash MX 2004 saving
over a network, but now saving a 14 MB flash file to a Mac OS X
Server is taking up to 2 minutes over AFP!! Server is a Sawtooth G4
running Jaguar Server 10.2.8 - long in the tooth I know!
An odd thing about this is that my first save will take 15
seconds, my second about 2 minutes, the third around 15 seconds,
the fourth around 2 minutes and so on... A "Save as" will take
about 40 seconds consistently.
That is:
0:15 - 1st save
2:00 - 2nd save
0:15 - 3rd save
1:56 - 4th save
Again that is using AFP, but even using SMB I notice this
alternate short/long save time. Using SMB a "Save as" takes 16
seconds on the same 14 MB file. Then the first save will take 3
seconds and the second about 13 seconds, the third save will take 3
seconds the fourth save will take 14 seconds etc...
Now this looks like a good case for using SMB over AFP (but
that is a topic for another forum). However, it is clearly a Flash
8 vs. Flash MX 2004 issue. When I go back to using Flash MX 2004
saves pretty consistently take about 2-3 seconds and "Save As"
takes about 10 seconds. This is using AFP or SMB (SMB is a bit
faster).
I called Macromedia (Adobe) support for help and their only
answer is that "saving over a network is not reccommended or
supported" (neither is this documented, even though some of their
tutorial examples use network workflows). I told them that Flash MX
2004 (and previous) NEVER gave me this problem which has apparently
been introduced with Flash 8 Professional.
Anyone else have this issue?
Thanks
Jflyyou should search this forum the past 2 days - been a few

Good day to all.
I'm trying to install Solaris 10 (11/06) on my pentium D box. I have 1 SATA hdd (primary master) and 1 DVD-RW drive. The hdd have 2 primary partitions - 1st - win-xp, ntfs, 2nd - for Solaris OS and 1 logical partition. During installation process I have an error - installboot failed - failed to install boot block.
After that I boot in single user shell disagreed to mount found solaris partition on /a and entered command - /sbin/installgrub stage1 stage2 /dev/dsk/c1d0s0 and got an error - cannot open/stat device /dev/dsk/c1d0s2
I don't understand why installgrub trying to use c1d0s2 instead of c1d0s0?
By the way, mount /dev/dsk/c1d0s0 /a works fine.
Pls help!Hi,
I have a disk with 2 partitions. 1st partition I installed solaris2 filesystem/slices. 2nd partition I created via fdisk from within solaris.
I assigned 2nd partition to a zpool. Creating the zpool trashed my MBR, and I could no longer boot Solaris off the hard drive.
booting into singleuser mode off the install cd, solaris detected the 1st partition, and mounted it at /a. Running installgrub gave me the same error message.
Trick I tried:
Copy stage1 and stage2 files off /a/boot/grub into /tmp.
unmount /a.
re-run installgrub
violla installgrub has no problem writing to device. The MBR was restored! Horray! -
Problem with f5 key, problem with f5 key
I have an I Mac( 2.5 GHz Intel Core I5) with an operating system version 10.8.2. Today while watching a video on MKV player I have pressed F5 key which decreases the decibels. I have pressed the key repeatedly and it reached zero level. Since then I am not able to listen to the audio in MKV player while watching the video, though I am able to listen to the sound of key board and other sounds. I am unable to restore it to the previous level. Please suggest me how to increase the decibles by pressing F5 key or any other alternate way.
Long shot, but...
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back -
S L O W Saves from Flash 8 over network??

Viewing the responses on other forums, opening & saving files over the network is being strongly discouraged.
I've never heard of this being an issue and in fact it is something that we have been doing without problem for ten years here. It's only until Flash 8 that I have even questioned it.
Any other opinions out there?

Exporting to Media Browser & Chapters etc
Hi People,
I just finished editing my wedding video in iMovie 08 and everything looks great. I need to add chapters so that my relatives can skip to different locations in the movie. I read that the only way to add chapters is to add it to the media browser and then send it into garage band.....create the chapters there and then export it to iDVD. I tried this with a short test movie with only about 2 minutes of footage and it works fine. When I try to add my wedding video to the media browser it starts off and says it will take about 350 minutes to export...it exports for a few hours and then fails with an error (I think the error code might have been -43 but cant remember..and refers to startup disk, I think being too full..)
My wedding video is huge.. being 3 hours the raw files were about 50 or 60 gig. I have done all of my editing from an external drive that has about 70 gig free and ideally this is where I would want to export the finished movie to. I do not have more than about 6gb left on my MacBook Pro...
1: Is there a way to make chapters without using media browser?
2: If media browser is the only option for chapters how can I get media browser to use the external drive when it is exporting.
Thanks - Justin1: Is there a way to make chapters without using media browser?
Yes. Garageband should be able to chapter any QT compatible video you can bring into it whether brought in via the Media Browser, the Finder, or "drag 'n dropped" from the desktop. Further, the Media Browser employs H.264/AAC compression as the export default, so while the files are small, it can take hours to compress very long files. You could, for instance, export your project to your hard drive via the "Using QT" export option to a less compressed format such as DV or AIC to your 70 GBs space with an AIC/Linear PCM probably requiring 30 plus GBs or a DV taking closer to 40 and I would normally expect this export to be quicker than H.264/AAC. However, if you still prefer the H.264/AAC built-in preset, use the "Export Movie..." option to select the same size file using the same Media Browser settings, but place the file on your external drive where you want it.
2: If media browser is the only option for chapters how can I get media browser to use the external drive when it is exporting.
Media Browser files are stored in a folder within a project's "package." Since these files are stored on the start-up drive by default and there is no user preference to relocate them, I would not normally recommend the average user attempt to set up the console workaround described elsewhere in this forum when so many other easier solutions are open to you in this case.
ADDITION NOTES: Don't know if you are burning to dual-layer device or not. (I.e., iDVD will not write a single-layer 3-hour DVD.) If not, you will need to consider burning you DVD content in two parts or using an alternate allowing longer burns and use of AC3 audio rather than iDVD's PCM. -
Oracle on *BSD systems?
Well, since Oracle has been ported to Linux (Thank you, Oracle!)
I'm curious if it will ever be available on BSD? The BSD (Free,
Open, Net) group is supposed to be much better server environment
than Linux is. I know that it is possible to run Linux binaries
on *BSD, but somehow I think that's not very optimal?
Any ideas?

Sun Java Toolkit 1.0 for CDC on Linux
I am looking to develop of my system to run on a PDA or one of the other more powerful J2ME platforms. From what I've read the Toolkit for CDC is what I need. I would like to use swing (if possible) and the platform must have WiFi access to a server (which will be running the J2EE (JBoss) application). So my target device must support J2EE client functionality.
The download site only as a Windows EXE, but as a long time Solaris (and now Linux) hack I don't have a Window system to develop upon. Is Sun planning a version of the toolkit for Linux?
If not is there a way I could bring the J2ME Wireless Toolkit up to the specification I need? I download that and had little problem developing a MIDlet that I deployed to my Mobile phone. I even played with the emulator and created a generic target device with a QVGA screen as I haven't got any target hardware yet.
Thanks for any and all help
SteveI'm also interested in how to develop CDC applications under linux...
