Alternative to native, dynamic sql to return a ref cursor to a client

I'm on Oracle 8.0.4, and would like to pass a string of values like '1,2,7,100,104' that are the primary key for a table. Then use something like:
procedure foo( MyCur RefCurType, vKey varchar2)
begin
open MyCur for
'select names from SomeTable' | |
' where ID in (' | | vKey | | ')'
end;
This would return a recordset to (in this case) a Crystal Reports report.
However, native dynamic SQL ain't available until 8.1.0. So can anyone think of a clever way to accomplish this, with a way to return a cursor? I can't figure out how to do this with DBMS_SQL, because open_cursor is just returning a handle, not a referene to a cursor that can be passed to a remote client.

Workaround for opening a strongly typed cursor using native dynamic SQL

Hi All,
In reading the PL/SQL documentation for Oracle 9i, I noted that the OPEN-FOR
statement with a dynamic SQL string only allows the use of weakly typed cursors.
I have verified this limitation with my own experimentation as follows:

Is there a workaround to the situation? Since I do not know the table name at run
time, I must use Native Dynamic SQL. I have a long and complex record type
that I wish to return through JDBC using the REFCURSOR Oracle type in order to
avoid having to register an inordinate number of OUT parameters. Moreover, I
would like to return potentially one or more results in a ResultSet. Using the
standard method of registering native SQL types for the IN and OUT bindings
can only return one result. Hence the reason I would like to return a strong
cursor type. Also, the type of query I am doing is complex, and needs to be
executed in a PL/SQL procedure for performance reasons. Therefore simply
executing a SELECT query dynamically built up on the the JDBC client won't
do the trick.
If anybody has experience with a similar problem and would like to volunteer
information on their workaround, I would really appreciate it.

We can use strongly-typed REF CURSORs in DNS, but the typing derives from a table e.g.
TYPE EmpCurTyp IS REF CURSOR RETURN emp%ROWTYPE;
so the problem is your use of "return rec_type" bit.
Forgive my bluntness but I think you have misunderstood strong and weak typing. You actually want to be using weakly-typed cursors. I mean this:
Moreover, I would like to return potentially one or more results in a ResultSet. suggests that the structure of your resultset may vary, which is precisely what a weakly-typed ref cursor allows us to do. Then we can use the JDBC metadata methods to interrogate the structure of the resultset, innit.

Using Native Dynamic SQL in Forms

Can Native Dynamic SQL be used in Forms 5.0 or Forms 6.0? (Database 8.1.6.0.0)
I have tried the following code (examples below) from the PL/SQL User's Guide and Reference Release 8.1.6 and the Metalinks Note: 62592.1 and the trigger/procedure (in Forms) will not compile. I appreciate any help given.

Once a cursor is opened you need to fetch the rows from it in order to get the data.
Also, have you checked that the query runs as plain non-dynamic SQL within SQL*Plus with the same parameters, to see that it returns data?
What is you purpose for using Dynamic SQL? If you clarify the requirement we may be able to show you how to do the same using non-dynamic SQL.

Usually your problem can be described with 'Who cares'. I mean, for what reason do you do this? I doubt that there's a business need to get 100 % accurate answers for this. Normally such things are used to get a picture about the growth of data.
Personally I would prefer to have up-to-date statistics for all tables and just query the number of rows from there. Sufficient for me in < 99 % of all cases.

In 10 this cannot be done with dbms_sql (to my knowledge). There are a couple of other options.
1) open the ref cursor for the dynamic statement using bind variables (or SYS_CONTEXT variables, which i prefer since they are much easier to deal with when you are dynamically adding predicates).

2) change the DBMS_SQL to do an insert into a global temporary table and return the ref cursor which select's * from GTT;
3) upgrade to Oracle 11 :)

Oracle Function returns a Ref Cursor to a ResultSet object - Performance

My program calls an Oracle PL/SQL function which returns a ref cursor to a ResultSet object. I know that the function runs to completion relatively quickly when i run it in an anonymous block but when the call is made through my Java application the resultset takes about 30 mins to return. Below is a snippet of my code:

reportRS = ((OracleCallableStatement) reportStmt).getCursor(1);
Through a debugger I see that the second last statement (reportStmt.execute()) runs quickly. It is only when I step into the last statement that the debugger takes up to 30 minutes.
Any thoughts?

Function call returned in ref cursor

We have a ref cursor that calls a function in a package. When ODP.NET reads the cursor, it can't see what the function is returning. OO4O works fine, and if I take the sql that populates the ref cursor and put it into a temporary table, then select from that temporary table to return the ref cursor to ODP, it works fine. Anyone else seen this issue? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Procedure to RETURN a REF CURSOR

Environment:
OWB10g Client on Windows XP Professional
Repository - 9.2.0.4 on UNIX (AIX 5.2)
Target - 9.2.0.4 on UNIX (AIX 5.2)
Is it possible to create a PROCEDURE in OWB that returns a REF CURSOR?
It was not one of the TYPEs available when specifying the procedure parameters.
Is this an enhancement that's coming if it's not possible today?

Don't know you specific requirements, but according to the explanation ("Table functions extend PL/SQL and are a new option in Oracle9i. This option allows a function to accept, process and return multiple rows.") it at least is capable of returning rowtypes.

i need to do a store that returns a cursor, but the expression of the cursor are genereted dynamicly. how can i do that?
something like this:
sql_stmt := 'SELECT * FROM ' || INTABLE || ' WHERE '|| inWhereClause;
EXECUTE IMMEDIATE sql_stmt into C1;
where c1 is a ref cursor( OUT variable of procedure)
it is possible or not?

How to update data returned using REF CURSOR

Hi all,
I am trying to update updated data in a gridview but the update button seem to do nothing as i retrieve data using REF CURSOR.
Let me describe the architecture of my application first. I'm trying to implement best practice whenever possible. I am following the data access tutorial published in www.asp.net , the only difference is that i have an Oracle (10g) database. So I split my application into three layers, data access, business logic, and presentation layer. I'm also writing all queries in an Oracle package.
So I have my Oracle packages that perform CRUD operations. Then I have an xsd file that define dataTable based on the package procedure. My business logic layer then calls functions defined in the xsd file. And finally a detailsView control that uses an ObjectDataSource to call business logic functions.
In a nutshell, I am just trying to update records retrieved using REF CURSOR. Your help is very much appreciated. Please let me know if further details are required. Cheers,

In the DataSet (xsd) where your DataTable is defined, you just need to add additional methods to the TableAdapter to handle insert, update and delete, either with SQL or by mapping to stored procedures.
Alternatively in code, create an OracleDataAdapter and supply its InsertCommand, UpdateCommand and DeleteCommand.

Returning a Ref cursor as an OUT Parameter

I have defined 2 Types and 2 Ref cursors as shown below.I have written a procedure having 2 IN and 2 OUT parameters which are of type Ref cursors and return records to the calling client. My question is how can i test for the output of the two cursors here in pl/sql?.. also i should not close the sursors.. right?..its the job of the calling client as per my knowledge....Please suggest
