Alternative warranty options to AppleCare?

Hi guys.
I have a question.
Stupid me took too long to buy my AppleCare extension for my MBP unibody and I'm over my warranty exp by bout 2-3 weeks. (Money was an issue)
I know AppleCare cannot be bought once the original warranty expires.
Are there any alternative options to AppleCare that would get me near the same coverage for my MBP?
I still have an unresolved issue regarding a significant screen whine that was diagnosed while the computer was still under warranty and is still open in terms of its case. Apple has to send my MBP off to a repair lab to specifically find the issue (replaced both my screen and my Logic board and the issue still remains). I just never had the chance to do it because my daily life is very dependent on my laptop (school, work).
Another potential contributing factor, my father helped me pay for my MBP with his Amex card. Amex is good about supplying asset insurance and warranties as part of their buyer's protection policy. Should I also inquire with Amex in regards to another warranty?
Everyone tells me AppleCare is a no brainer and should be bought. But of course, that is no longer an option for me.
Any help = awesome! Thanks in advance all.

AMEX extends warranties on many consumer electroncis items (there is a value cutoff, something like the item must have retailed for a min. amount) for up to one additional year on all warranties of less than 5 years.
Plus, I would think in most states, if the issue is one that was unresolved from a previous warranty claim, then it would still be covered anyway. Otherwise, many companies would just stall claims until the end of the warranty period if they could then walk away.
I'd talk to Apple first, and remind them this is an issue that they failed to resolve while under warranty, If they balk at that, call up AMEX, who typically either refunds or replaces, at least that's been my experience with them the couple of times I've gone through them for claims.

  • Alternative querying options at BI

    Hello all!,
    Could you help me giving some information, links, notes, about alternative querying options at BI infoCubes. FYI: I don't want to use Query Designer o Web Application Designer or BEx Analyzer via excel based reports.
    Thanks in advance and best regards
    Bernardo

    With BI 7.0 there is an option of native Excel 2007 access.
    The SAP Business Objects tools can access BW - Crystal Reports, Web Intelligence, Voyager, and is SAP's future direction, replacing Analyzer and Web Qery Designer.
    Other 3rd party tools that should have decent OLAP capabilities.

  • [Helix 2nd gen] Alternative stylus options

    Hi all,
    Loving my Helix 2nd gen so far. Not happy with the palm rejection (only starts when very close; would love to double the range). But I guess I will just create a toggle button that deactivates the touch screen through the registry.
    Anyway, my question: Are there any alternative stylus options for the Helix 2nd gen? I found an older thread indicating that "penabled" Wacom styli(?) work, but I don't think this attribute is displayed on any of their current products.
    Any styli you can recommend for the current Helix? (Maybe even one that extends the palm rejection distance?)
    Thanks for your advice!
    Moritz

    I just tested the Stylus of the Lenovo X230T and it works without issues. Guess I have to calibrate it though. The thing I do not like with the Stylus of the Helix 2nd is that the click button is plan to the stylus. So it is allways hard to find and press if you have some bigger fingers.
    So - any other Lenovo Wacom Stylus should run, I guess.

  • IPhone 5 Pre-order but no option for AppleCare?

    Hi,
    I don't know if this is the right place to ask this, sorry if I'm wrong!
    I've pre-ordered my iPhone 5 from my carrier (Orange UK) but there was no option for AppleCare. Am I able to purchase this from the Apple Store once it has arrived?
    Thanks, Ben

    Yes, once you get the phone take it to an Apple Retail Store or call AppleCare in your country for your options.

  • Verizon warranty vs. Applecare

    So I ordered my iPhone and it should be arriving on Monday. Does the Apple care automatically come with the phone or is something I have to purchase separately? I guess what I really would like to know is what is the difference between the verizon warranty ($10.99) a month and the Apple care (which I'm guessing you have to pay for). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Best explanation I've seen of the differences:
    Both Extended Warranty and Wireless Phone Protection are products offered by Verizon. Total Equipment Coverage is the name of the two products bundled together.
    Extended Warranty is not Applecare. Verizon will also sell you Applecare if you want it. There are a couple of important differences between the two. Without Applecare, you get one complimentary call to Apple Tech support within the first 90 days of ownership, after that calls are $29.99. With Apple Care, you get free calls for the entire two years. The Extended Warrany sold by Verizon does not give you that. If you need a phone replaced under Applecare, you deal with Apple. If you need a phone replaced under warranty through the Extended Warranty, you deal with Verizon. They will not have replacement phones on site. You will be shipped a replacement overnight.
    Neither Applecare nor the Extended warranty cover loss, theft or damage. For that you need the Wireless Phone Protection , either by itself or bundled with the Extended Warranty in Total Equipment Coverage. If your phone is lost, stolen or damaged, you will get it replaced by Asurion. There is a deductible. You will be shipped a phone overnight.

  • Can Someone explain warranty options

    I'm not sure if this is specific to the Canadian site or not, but the Thinkpad waranty options are very confusing.  For instance:
    ThinkPlus 2 Year EasyServ Total for 1 Year EasyServ ThinkPad
    ThinkPlus 3 Year EasyServ Total for 1 Year EasyServ ThinkPad
    What on earth does that mean.  What's EasyServ Total and what's EasyServ ThinkPad?  What's 2 or 3 years and what's 1 year?
    Or:
    ThinkPlus 2 Year Onsite 9x5 Next Business Day Warranty and Maintenance Option
    What's the Maintenance Option?
    There is nothing that explains what any of this means.  There's a little "Help me Decide" popup, but it doesn't use any of these terms.  For instance, what option do I need to select to get the Accidental Damage Protection (ADP)?  It's not explicitely listed as an option anywhere I could see?
    Any help would be much appreciated.

    so far I'm enjoying my 400S - but my warranty situation has been a nightmare - I totally can relate to your frustration - back in October I purchased the machine and additionally purchased  " 1 year on site & 1 year Thinkpad protection" - around the end of last year Thinkpad protection was renamed ADP (i.e. accidental damage protection) and now there' s something called EZserv.
    my issue was that the internal Lenovo/IBM bureaucracy didn't acknowledge the above warranty - only depot.
    I called for weeks to get this rectified - even scanned and emailed an itemized listing that I saved when I completed the online purchase - was assured a month ago that the warranty/entitlement folks were aware of my warranty and I would in fact be getting a refund since that warranty now sells for $79 instead of the $119 that I paid.
    to date I haven't seen the refund and a few minutes ago the online warranty look-up shows EZserv/depot - what is EZserv ? is it 1 year onsite ? something else ?
    personally I think there remains an IBM vs Lenovo internal battle and customers are getting the short end.

  • Why is there no international warranty option for iPhone 5?

    Why is there not an option available to extend the iPhone warranty to an international warranty?
    Especially with a phone that you tend to take with you whenever you travel having to go to the country you bought it originally is a pain and sometimes not feasible.
    In my case : when I travelled from Hong Kong to a business trip in the Netherlands and then on to the US my iPhone 5 got stolen at the airport in Hong Kong. luckily I only had a prepaid SIM for Hong Kong in the iPhone so I went online and ordered a new simlock free  iPhone 5 at the Dutch online Apple store to be delivered in Amsterdam a few days later. So far, so good.
    I am currently in China and my iPhone 5 sleep button broke down. As I had to be in Hong Kong last week I thought I would stop by the Causeway Bay Apple Store after making a genius bar appointment. They checked the iPhone 5 and confirmed the sleep button was broken and it would be swapped for a new one. However on checking my serial number they told me I had to go back to The Netherlands to get it fixed.... So here is a problem, I am not planning on being there any time soon.
    Why is it not possible in the global economy we live in to get an international warranty?
    I called Apple Care and they suggested I could try in an Apple store in North Carolina where I am due in a few weeks, but they could not guarantee they would swap the phone.
    Now the end of July  I am due in the UK and from what I read now an iPhone bought in any EU country could be swapped in another EU country. so that would mean I could swap it in London?
    Very odd.  Always travel with my MacBook Air and MacBook Pro and these do have international warranty.

    I have a different story.
    I got my Hong Kong version of iPhone 5 A1429 GSM in Japan(yes, complex)
    It had a defective power button so I took it to an Apple Store in Japan and they gave me a replacement. Altough at first they refused to service this one so I had to try at a different Apple Store, but no problem getting serviced.
    And the replacement had a battery drain issue so I had it swapped in Australia, with no problem.
    And I got this iPhone stolen, so I bought US GSM version(A1428) in Australia(again, complex).
    This one apparently had a problem starting up, got stuck at Apple logo even after so many restores.
    I took it to an Apple Store in Australia, they refused to service this one, stating this one was made for US market only and was a different model.
    So from what I understand, if it's unlocked and your local Apple Store has the same model, they still do the repair/replacement under warranty.

  • Used Mac Options for AppleCare

    Yes.

  • My sleep/wake button is stuck, out of warranty options?

    Alright, my iPhone 4's sleep/wake button became stuck last Sunday, and hasn't popped out at. I have an appointment on Sunday with the Geniuses but since my phone is out warranty, I'm expecting my wallet to take a hit. Are there any options available in relation to repairing my phone instead of paying $200 for an out-of-warranty replacement?

    you can always google to see if there's an iPhone repair shop near you and see what they charge.....

    . I will not be able to tell you if the Digital Music is available for repair or not. I am sorry but this is not something I have control over. Parts and support policies differs country to country, in your case you will need to work things out with the distributor.

  • Alternative query options

    I am an assisting a co-worker on trying to improve an ugly query and I can't come up with good suggestions, based on all the business rules that have been applied.
    The main rule is to try and convert everything from the production system into the data warehouse and if it cannot be converted, create a log for it.
    Here is a short test case.
    CREATE TABLE ATTY (atty_id number, nme varchar2(20));
    INSERT INTO atty VALUES (1, 'Bob');
    INSERT INTO atty VALUES (2, 'Perry');
    INSERT INTO atty VALUES (3, 'Ben');
    CREATE TABLE PHN (phn_id number, atty_id number, phn_no varchar2(15));
    INSERT INTO phn VALUES (10,1,'800-555-1234');
    INSERT INTO phn VALUES (11,2,'800-555-7890');
    INSERT INTO phn VALUES (12,3,'800-555-6541');
    CREATE TABLE ATTY_CASE_XREF (atty_id number, pers_id number, case_id number);
    -- The attorney representing a person on a case.  Could be multiple people and/or attornies per case.
    INSERT INTO atty_case_xref VALUES (2, 30, 40);
    INSERT INTO atty_case_xref VALUES (2, 31, 40);
    INSERT INTO atty_case_xref VALUES (3, 32, 41);
    INSERT INTO atty_case_xref VALUES (2, 33, 41);
    INSERT INTO atty_case_xref VALUES (1, 34, 42);  -- yes this points to nothing (aka bad data to deal with)
    CREATE TABLE case (case_id number, docket varchar2(20));
    -- Due to bad data, may not always have case for each reference above.
    INSERT INTO case VALUES (40, '2013-abcdefg');
    INSERT INTO case VALUES (41, '2013-pouyfbkjo');
    COMMIT;
    The test case query (a simplified version of the real one but captures the concepts)
    SELECT ap.atty_id,
           ap.nme,
           p.phn_no,
           c.docket
      FROM atty ap
           INNER JOIN phn p
              ON ap.atty_id = p.atty_id
           INNER JOIN atty_case_xref acx
              ON ap.atty_id = acx.atty_id
           LEFT OUTER JOIN case c
             ON acx.case_id = c.case_id
    UNION
    SELECT ap.atty_id,
           ap.nme,
           p.phn_no,
           NULL
      FROM atty ap
           INNER JOIN phn p
              ON ap.atty_id = p.atty_id
           INNER JOIN atty_case_xref acx
              ON ap.atty_id = acx.atty_id;
    The desired output (and what is output by the above SQL statement is) (order does not matter)
    Atty_ID
    NME
    PHN_NO
    DOCKET
    1
    Bob
    800-555-1234
    2
    Perry
    800-555-7890
    2013-abcdefg
    2
    Perry
    800-555-7890
    2013-pouyfbkjo
    2
    Perry
    800-555-7890
    3
    Ben
    800-555-6541
    2013-pouyfbkjo
    3
    Ben
    800-555-6541
    Basically, the first part (above the union) creates a record for each attorney on a case, even if a case record is not loaded.
    The second part converts just a generic non case record for each unique attorney.
    If attorney 1 is listed on 10 cases, need to create 11 records. One for each case and one with no case information
    The data warehouse table the data is loaded into serves two purposes.  It is a normal data table, but also acts as a code table.  That way if someone wants a list of all attorneys, they don't have to do a distinct, but can just query for a certain type of record (don't ask why).
    The cost for the real version of this query is 248 Billion and was killed after several days of running as it was still building the result set.  The explain plan image I have shows the following row counts, ATTY = 96,255, PHN = 3,284,444, ATTY_CASE_XREF = 11,553,888, CASE = 14,421772.  We are looking for options that turn this into a one-pass run (or just reduce the cost) so it would complete in a reasonable time.
    Any suggestions need to work on 10.2.  This seems like a good place for a MODEL clause, but I still struggle with that syntax.
    And the cleanup
    DROP TABLE atty purge;
    DROP TABLE phn purge;
    DROP TABLE atty_case_xref purge;
    DROP TABLE case purge;

    Glad you asked because I found out a couple of assumptions were no longer valid.  The code was developed on 10.2.0.4, and a copy still exists there, but apparently the client had upgraded their DB since I helped out many months ago.

    The NOT EXISTS are there to prevent this record from being loaded twice into the data warehouse.  On the initial load, this will not be an issue and we are discussing removing it from the initial load run.  For function f_remove_site(), I have come up with a few lines of SQL that will replace what that function does, in order to remove the SQL -> PL/SQL -> SQL context switches.
    We do not have access via SQL*Plus to do trace/explain plan info so the following is taken from PL/SQL Developer (the format looked good in the pre block)

    As stated, the big question is, can we avoid the full table scan twice on the DMS_ATTY, DMS_ATTYPHN, and DMS_PHN tables.  That was my reason for creating the simple example, based on this larger complex query.

  • Apps rejected. I'm crushed. Any alternatives or options?

    Apple rejected our apps and wrote:
    "We've reviewed your applications. We have determined that the applications are of limited utility to the broad iPhone and iPod touch user community, and will not be published to the App Store."
    I can't tell you how crushed and disappointed I am. We thought they were fun applications and would sell and would have at least liked a chance to TRY.
    Has anybody ever successfully appealed such a decision?
    Are there any other alternatives for selling the apps?
    I am so disappointed I can't barely put it in words.

    Hi Doug,
    I sympathize with your frustration. One thing I think is worth commenting about is that when Apple write "We have determined that the applications are of limited utility to the broad iPhone and iPod touch user community", they might not mean that in a literal sense -- it might be a very subtle way of saying that they think that your apps would be offensive or controversial to some users and that therefore they do not wish to carry them on the App Store. So your arguing that your app is actually more useful than other election-content apps might not be such a winning argument. I hope you'll succeed in getting them approved the second time around, but maybe you should rethink the content of your apps before trying again? Or maybe contact Apple and ask them to specify what kind of changes they would like to see in your apps in order to approve them?

  • Alternative deployment option for custom xpath- 10.1.2

    Hi,
    BPEL ver: 10.1.2
    What is the best way to deploy custom xpath classes?
    Here is the list of location that I know that it works
    1. Copy extracted classes files in %BPEL_HOME%/integration/orabpel/system/classes with package hierarchy
    2. Copy jar file in %BPEL_HOME%/integration/jdev/j2ee/home/applib
    Somone said in the forum, approach 2 does not work any more in 10.1.3. But our sysadmin team does not like the approach 1 at all because it is in system area.
    Is there an alternative to these deployment that can also work in 10.1.2?
    Thanks for your help,
    ibyon

    The demo is not available through OTN. It ships with jheadstart 10.1.2.2 which is only available for licensed Jheadstart users.
    Please visit the FAQ on our Jheadstart Product Center for information on how to obtain a Jheadstart license:

  • Alternative Printing Options for Books?

    Can you all point me to any and all web sites that offer printing of iPhoto books either through a plug-in of some sort or from PDF files? I know of 4: MyPublisher, Shutterfly, Lulu, and Sharedink.
    Any others? Thanx very much.

    Yes thats exactly what I am trying to narrow down - the sites that cater specifically in some way to iPhoto users for printing books either with a plug-in like MyPublisher, or sending a straight PDF saved from iPhoto. Although I suppose most of these printers probably take printable PDF files since even Apples and MyPublisher are being uploaded a PDF file out of iPhoto anyway. The plug-in and "Buy Book" button just automates the upload and purchase process.

  • Alternative Selection Options:

    Hello,
    I searched through the questions and did not find a question comparable to what i am looking for.
    I want to have a radio button selection screen. Based on the radio button they choose,
    then display further selection criteria for that button( plant, material, etc...). Seems like this event would
    occur after initialization and before start-of-selection.
    If there are questions just like this, please forward them link to me.
    Thanks so much!!!
    Steve

    First, in order it works smoothly (without pressing ENTER after choosing one of radiobuttons) you have to assing function code to your radiobuttons.
    parameters: pa_1 radiobutton group rad USER-COMMAND fcode,
                        pa_2 radiobutton group rad.
    This will force triggerring PAI ( AT SELECTION-SCREEN ) every time you change your selection from pa_1 to pa_2 and vice versa.
    Now you can have two different solutions:
    - in PAI call different selection screens, i.e. one would have certain parameters, whereas the other would have different ones on it.
    "first selection screen
    SELECTION-SCREEN BEGIN OF SCREEN 110.
    PARAMETERS: pa ...
    SELECTION-SCREEN END OF SCREEN 110.
    "second one, with different parameters
    SELECTION-SCREEN BEGIN OF SCREEN 120.
    parameters: pa....
    SELECTION-SCREEN END OF SCREEN 120.
    DATA: flag_disp TYPE c VALUE 'X'.
    AT SELECTION-SCREEN OUTPUT.
      "first we need to call selection screen 110 - we do it only once (that's why I am using this flag and clearing it afterward)
      IF flag_disp = 'X'.
        CLEAR flag_disp.
        CALL SELECTION-SCREEN 110.
      ENDIF.
    AT SELECTION-SCREEN.
      "now depending on radiobutton selection....
      IF pa_1= 'X'.
        SET SCREEN 0.   "...first we leave current call sequence
        CALL SELECTION-SCREEN 110.  "then we call new selection screen
        LEAVE PROGRAM.
      ELSE.
        SET SCREEN 0.
        CALL SELECTION-SCREEN 120.
        LEAVE PROGRAM.
      ENDIF.
    The other solution (simpler one) would be placing all the fields (parameters) on selection screen and by default make them all disabled. Now depending on radiobutton selection you make them back input ready.
    "first you place all the parameters you want
    parameters: pa_plant ...
                        pa_matnr...
    AT SELECTION-SCREEN OUTPUT.
       loop at screen.
          case screen-name.
            when 'PA_PLANT'.
               if pa_1 = 'X' . "first radiobutton selected
                  screen-input = 0.  "disable PLANT
               else.
                  screen-input = 1.  "enable PLANT
               endif.
            when 'PA_MATNR'.
               if pa_1 = 'X' .
                  screen-input = 1. "disable MAT
               else.
                  screen-input = 0. "enable MAT
               endif.
          endcase.
          modify screen.
       endloop.
    Regards
    Marcin
