Aluminium iMac connectivity issue

I have an aluminium iMac first revision and I have the aluminium bluetooth keyboard and wireless mighty mouse connected to it. However every so often the mouse will disconnect itself for 5-10 seconds then reconnect. This also happens with the keyboard, sometimes both disconnect at the same time and the mouse pointer lags on screen. Other times I have to switch the mouse on/off to get the mac to pick it up again. This has been happening since I first bought the iMac but thought it was just Leopard and an update would sort it out but this has not happened. Any ideas?
Also I tried to connect a bluetooth device, a Sony Ericsson W910i phone to transfer some photos/videos across to the iMac but the the phone would not connect to the iMac to even though I had registered the device on the mac and the iMac was set to discoverable. The phone says it has found the iMac but it will not let me transfer the photos/videos across and keeps saying "connection failed". I tried about 10 times and it failed everytime. I was in range as I was sitting right in front of the computer less than a metre away.
Could there be a problem with my bluetooth module?

Hello KYL. There could be, as you postulated, a BT module problem (I am assuming you have an internal BT module).
You might try resetting PRAM:

  • Aluminium iMacs – Heat Issue

    The Set Up
In our studio we have a mix of iMacs (G5, Intel), Mac Minis (Intel) and Mac Pros. We run 10.5 and 10.6 along with Adobe CS3 or CS5 on them.
What we found is, that amongst these machines, Intel aluminium iMacs are the least durable of the lot.
Those being older than two years are prone to freeze up, show graphic glitches or the optical drives work very unreliable.
We gave some of these machines to a qualified repair shop, but they were not able to reproduce the problems we experienced.
    Finding The Problem
While trying to get to the bottom of these issues I discovered smcFanControl which let's you monitor the temperature of internal components and adjust the respective cooling fans.
I installed it on nine machines and here is what I found.
A new iMac (i5, 27", less than 1 year) shows normal hard drive temperatures at around 30 - 35Cº.
Older machines (CoreDuo, Core2Duos, i7) were running their hard drives at around 45-50Cº (idle).
Those machines causing problems showed hard drive temperatures of 50 to 55 Cº in idle state.
Western Digital does not recommend to run its drives above 50C. Seagate does not recommend temperatures above 60Cº. In general it is assumed that a healthy working temperature for hard drives lies between 35 - 45Cº.
Please note, I was conducting these measurements in November.
My two year old 27" i7 has a problem with Spotlight, whose index seems to get corrupted frequently. Rebuilding the index every couple of month helps but the problem keeps coming back. During an export in After Effects I observed temperatures of up to 68Cº! In idle state I'm getting 45-50Cº.
Looking at the issues again – graphic glitches, non working or unreliable optical drives, slow or unstable performance – it all starts to make sense now.
    Preliminary Conclusion
The cooling layout in these slick machines is anything but robust. What I assume is, that over time you can expect dust to build up internally, blocking the ventilation and thus causing temperature hot spots.
What surprises me is, that OSX 10.6 (retail) does not seem to see the need of turning up the cooling fans even when a hard drive runs near it's terminal operating temperature.
    Further Steps
I will go ahead and give some of these machines an internal clean up. I might just as well give it a go and replace some of the battered hard drives with SSD's instead and see if this helps to keep temperatures in check.
I will let you know about my findings. I found so much useful help in this forum – was about time to give something back.

  • IMac connectivity issues

my friend recently purchased a intel based iMac computer earlier in the summer. he used it at home for a month or two with no internet connectivity problems (using airport). this past week we moved into an apartment to start the new school year and we had cable internet set up. we have a trendnet wireless router. i am having no problems connecting to the network and internet on my powerbook g4. my friend on the other hand, can not connect to the network with his iMac. the airport drop down menu shows our network name as well as the other networks in the area, but every time he tries to connect to the network he is given an error connecting message. we have been messing with the network settings on the iMac to no avail. he is unable to connect to the internet via ethernet as well, including when he went straight from the cable, bypassing the router. i believe the problem lies somewhere within the iMac's settings because my computer has no issues and the internet still did not work on the iMac when the router was based.
if anyone has any ideas what's going on with this and could provide some help it would be appreciated.
    thanks!

Hello pahoehoe13. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Let's first check your friend's AirPort settings on their iMac...
System Preferences > Network > Show > Network Port Configurations
o Verify that an AirPort option exists. If it does not, click "New" to create one.
o Verify that AirPort is "On" (checked)
o Verify that AirPort is at the top of the list. If it isn't, you can drag it to the top.
Systems Preferences > Network > Show > AirPort
    AirPort tab
    o By default, join: Automatic
    TCP/IP tab
    o Configure IPv4: Using DHCP
o Configure IPv6: Automatically or Off
    Proxies tab
    o Configure Proxies: Manually
o Select a proxy server to configure: <All proxies should be unchecked unless you specifically require a proxy for Internet access.>
    o Exclude simple hostnames (unchecked)
o Bypass proxy settings for these Hosts & Domains: <leave blank>
o Use Passive FTP Mode (PASV) (checked)

  • AEBS disconnecting/dropping iMac connection issues, anyone else?

my intel iMac 20" keeps dropping the wireless connection to my Airport. I have my MacBook Pro right beside it and its a solid connection. I called Apple tech support today, but they are closed due to Holiday in Canada.
Anyone else having these issues with the new iMac's. So many problems lately, wireless, freezing etc.. I don't know what to do. I reformatted my iMac to see if that new update 1.1 was the issue, but it still disconnects.
    THanks

    Tried the first several times.
Unistalling CC Desktop didn't help either.
Tried viewing the install logs as per this page:

    Nothing.

  • Macbook Pro to IMac connection issue

    Hi!
So, I'm trying to display my mid 2010 Macbook Pro to my Feb 2014 IMac. I have a mini displayport to HDMI (female) connected to the macbook and recently bought a cable which is a HDMI (male) to thunderbolt to connect to the IMac. I downloaded OSX to the Macbook because I thought there was a OS conflict and configured the IMac's keyboard so that I can press f2 to target the monitor but it still isn't working. My ultimate goal is to calibrate my IMac monitor. I'm using a i1 profiler which works on the MacBook but doesn't seem to work on the new IMac. I want to pull the software up on the MB, drag it over to the IMac screen, calibrate using a spectraphotometer then email myself that profile to use on the IMac.
Any help would be greatly apprecaited!
    thanks!

  • TS2972 Connection Issues with Macbook, iMac, and Apple TV 3

I have an Apple TV 3 (ATV3) and my iMac connects via Home Sharing just fine, but my MacBook running 10.6.8 doesn't show up, nor does it recognize the iMac in iTunes. All devices have Home Sharing turned on using the same AppleID. Any thoughts as to why my Macbook seems to be the odd one out?

I had this problem earlier and was able to solve it by checking the display setting in the System Prefrences. This link will help you. http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/index.html#chapter=B%26sec tion=4%26tasks=true

  • Multiple Internet Connection Issues

Hi there, long time reader first time poster.
I figured I should post this as, while having read through hundreds of similar posts I still can't figure out how to solve my connectivity issues.
I just bought a new iMac 21.5 inch 3.2Ghz i3 model and while I am happy with the machine overall, it is the second one in a month - the first had a faulty ethernet port and refused to connect to the internet out of the box. Apple replaced it without question - almost as if they knew.
The replacement has now seemingly developed the same issue.
Some background info. The computer was connected both through ethernet and through the TC I bought to back it up until yesterday. So I was getting both a wireless signal from the TC and one through ethernet.
I have a hub that has 5 devices connected to it ( Printer, Cable TV, iMac and TC - now a PS3 ) That hub is served a signal by a simple NTT modem connected to a phone line. That modem is now nearly 5 years old but has always given great net speeds so I don't believe the problem to be the modem - I could be wrong though.
I just bought a PS3 and tried connecting it yesterday but had multiple problems. Despite me entering the correct PPPoE information to the letter, the PS3 refused to connect, saying the password and username was incorrect. I could connect it via a Bluetooth signal but no hard wired connection would work.
So I unplugged everything from the hub, shut down all the machines, turned off the modem and let it sit for 10 minutes and then plugged the ethernet cable from the PS3 straight into the modem, giving it a direct line. Switched on modem, rebooted PS3 and tried again - this time it connected through ethernet. I still don't know how or why. I can guess but I'm sure you guys know much more about this than I do.
So then I tried connecting the iMac back to the net, reconnected all the hub, followed the same procedure. Off, sit for a bit, on etc. This time the PS3 has no connection and now the iMac has no connection either!
The TC gave a green light though so I was able to get wireless. I tried removing all net locations from the iMac, installing new ones, renewed the DHCP lease, but no matter what I did (PPPoE info 100% correct) it just refused to establish a connection.
The the bloody TC light flashed amber and I couldn't get wireless either despite being plugged into the hub and getting a signal! The PS3 is now working and the cable is fine so I am starting to think either I have cluster ****** the whole setup or something is wrong with the iMac.
I go away for an hour then come back and the stupid TC has somehow picked up a connection! The light is green again?! But now the time connected display is scrolling repeatedly. I've got net but what the **** is wrong with all this?
Bottom line - not ethernet connection for the iMac but TC seems to be working and all other devices have a connection.
Please help me if you can! I just can't figure any of this out.

Your description is a bit confusing, but I use English as a second language, so it may be just me.
    1. How is the hub connecting to your modem, by ethernet cable or wirelessly?
    2. Which device is negotiating the internet connection with your ISP, the modem?
    3. Does the device that negotiates the connection use PPPoE?
    4. How are the other devices being handed their internet connection? DHCP only?
Only one device should be connecting directly to your ISP using the PPPoE protocol and configured with your account username and password. This device is preferably the modem. This device should be configured to hand out internal IP addresses to the other devices on your LAN using DHCP. All of the other devices should be configured to request an IP from that device, whether by ethernet or wi-fi, just with DHCP.

  • I receive a not connected to the internet message several times daily on my iMac connected via airport to a time capsule which accesses the internet via cable modem.. When I input my password to enter network preferences, the connection re-establishes.

I receive a "not connected to the internet message" several times daily on my iMac connected via airport to a time capsule which accesses the internet via a cable modem. Software/firmware is up to date on the iMac (OSX 10.6.8)  and Tme Capsule(7.5.2). Browser is Safari 5.1.
When I input my password at the prompt to enter network preferences, all the lights go green (ie... ethernet, ISP etc.) and the connection re-establishes immediately and states "the connection appears to be working normally".
It more of a nuisance than anything and seems to have started ocurring over the past couple of months. I also have a windows XP box also connected to the same cable modem that I never have internet connectivity issues with. I've verified all the physical aspects of the connections and can't see any evidence of any actual drops in the modem logs. I suspect it is just an intermittent communication loss between the Imac and the Time Capsule, but I am not very familiar with Mac equipment yet.
Just wondering if anyone has experienced a similar problem and what you did (if anything) to resolve it?
    Thanks.

The AirPort Express will connect to your existing wireless network if the network is using WPA2 Personal or WPA/WPA2 Personal wireless security settings.
So, it can join the network as a client and then provide an Ethernet signal to your Time Capsule.
Be sure to configure the Time Capsule to operate in Bridge Mode so that it will be operating on the same network.

  • IPad2, Verizon 3G, VPN Connectivity Issues

Greetings all. I am the systems administrator for my corporation and have seen an issue that I wish to present to the community for discussion.
For those enterprise users that have an iPad2 with Verizons 3G, are you experiencing connectivity issues while trying to connect to your VPNs from the 3G network? If so, have you found any work around to allow connectivity or does it work fine for you?
Here's a summary of my issues:
We have a VPN server built on Debian Linux that has been in operation for over four years. It handles remote VPN connections from Windows, Linux,  Android, OS X, iOS, and from many different devices including multiple flavors of Apple products (iMacs, Minis, MacBooks, iPads, etc.). To date, it has performed flawlessly with assorted devices connecting to it through broadband and assorted 3G networks.
Recently I purchased an iPad2 with Verizon 3G. I was able to set up the VPN connection using PPTP and connect using a Wi-Fi connection. When I turned off the Wi-Fi and attempted the same connection via Verizon 3G, it fails. I then took an associates iPad1 using AT&T 3G, set up the same connection, and was able to connect. I don't have access to an iPad2 on AT&T 3G so, I can't speak for that.
Here's the logs from the VPN server while connecting from my iPad2:
    Wi-Fi
    Jul 27 05:20:43 localhost pppd[31694]: Plugin /usr/lib/pptpd/pptpd-logwtmp.so loaded.
    Jul 27 05:20:43 localhost pppd[31694]: pptpd-logwtmp: $Version$
    Jul 27 05:20:43 localhost pppd[31694]: pppd 2.4.4 started by root, uid 0
    Jul 27 05:20:43 localhost pppd[31694]: Using interface ppp2
    Jul 27 05:20:43 localhost pppd[31694]: Connect: ppp2 <--> /dev/pts/4
    Jul 27 05:20:46 localhost pppd[31694]: Unsupported protocol 'IPv6 Control Protocol' (0x8057) received
Jul 27 05:20:46 localhost pppd[31694]: found interface eth1 for proxy arp

    Jul 27 05:20:46 localhost pppd[31694]: remote IP address 192.168.1.82
    Jul 27 05:20:46 localhost pppd[31694]: pptpd-logwtmp.so ip-up ppp2 scott XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX (removed external IP for security reasons)
Quick connect, able to utilize VPN connection normally. No issues.
    Verizon 3G
    Jul 27 05:20:29 localhost pppd[31682]: Plugin /usr/lib/pptpd/pptpd-logwtmp.so loaded.
    Jul 27 05:20:29 localhost pppd[31682]: pptpd-logwtmp: $Version$
    Jul 27 05:20:29 localhost pppd[31682]: pppd 2.4.4 started by root, uid 0
    Jul 27 05:20:29 localhost pppd[31682]: Using interface ppp2
    Jul 27 05:20:29 localhost pppd[31682]: Connect: ppp2 <--> /dev/pts/4
Jul 27 05:20:32 localhost pppd[31682]: peer refused to authenticate: terminating link
    Jul 27 05:20:33 localhost pppd[31682]: Connection terminated.
    Jul 27 05:20:33 localhost pppd[31682]: Exit.
As you can see, the peer refuses to authenticate causing the link to be terminated while attempting to connect using Verizons network. This is with the same VPN connection settings on the iPad2 that just worked with WiFi connection from the same device.
Here's what I can verify with regards to 3G networks:
Older (<4) iPhones and iPad1 using AT&T can connect
Windows and OS X based laptops using Sprint 3G can connect
Android based smart phones using Sprint 3G can connect
I have not called Verizon or Apple Support yet but, that's next when I have the time. My initial conclusion is that there is something with Verizons 3G services that is causing the issue. It may be that Verizon is using some sort of data compression process that is problematic with VPN transmission. While the log shows an unsupported IPv6 protocol when connecting via Wi-Fi, it still negotiates a successful connection and I don't think that's the root cause for the disconnect. Thoughts?

    Hi Alexander,
I am running in to the exact same issue (although not with Linux).  Did you ever find a fix for this?  I have some support tickets open with my VAR's, but found your post and thought I would check.  If I find anything I will post.
    Thanks

  • IChat video connection issue, not related to router

I received a brand new 20" iMac Core 2 Duo just yesterday and intended to use iChat AV to video conference with my girlfriend, who has a 12" iBook G4 1.2GHz with an iSight and all system software up-to-date.
We both have DSL connections at home. We also both have wireless routers. The very first time we tried a video conference, it worked perfectly without a hiccup and everything just looked and sounded wonderful. At the time, she was connected wirelessly and I was connected both wirelessly and through Ethernet to my router's local network.
The second time we tried it (only a few hours later), seemingly without having changed any settings, it failed to work, and hasn't worked since. At first, we would get Error -22, saying something about how bandwidth is insufficient to maintain a video conference. However, I do not believe bandwidth is the real issue since all other network/internet tasks on both ends are spiffy as usual. We also both tried turning off Airport and just connecting through Ethernet to our routers' local network. Same problem.
To then determine if the problem was with one our routers, we both set them aside and plugged our DSL modems directly into our computers and connected to the internet with PPPoE. This appears to partially fix the problem: we are able to initiate a video conference, we both have audio, I can see her, but she can't see me; sort of a one-sided conference. On my screen, the image of myself freezes as soon as the conference is initiated. So unless I'm missing something, the ultimate cause of this problem doesn't appear to be the routers.
You can bet I tried a bunch of the common tips mentioned in this discussion forum before posting this question, such as changing the iChat port in the preferences, turning off Firewalls in the Sharing preferences and changing Quicktime streaming speed.
In summary, it worked once and hasn't worked since, and routers do not appear to be the cause of the issue. Does anyone have any further advice for me? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
    iMac 20" Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

First off I want to thank James for his willingness to help me test connections today. James has suggested I check into upping my Mother's connection. I will definitely look into that.
I wanted to update the thread that I tried the three test accounts at Apple (appleu3test01-3) and had success from all three on my home computer via my wireless configuration no less. This is what stumps me about my connection issues with my Mother - we can both connect to others but between us we get error -8's since iChat 3. I also find it odd that this is happening even though we are both Earthlink customers - I would chalk it up to routing tables or something if we were on different ISP's.

  • Messages App| connectivity issues since upgrading to Mavericks

is anyone having problems since upgrading to Mavericks with connectivity issues in the "Messages" app? Im on a 2011 MacBook Pro. I will start a desktop share session with my folks (IMAC) and within 2-3 minutes of having access to their desktop, I'm unable to control any longer and their system freezes.

    HI,
When iChat 3 came out someone tested whether it would work on the platform that was running iChat 2 and also tested whether iChat 2 would work on the later OS.
This eventually led to the Reinstall procedure for iChat 3 up to the iChat 5 version.
Since then the app has required either a Backup version from when it was working, a copy on another machine running the same OS and app version numbers (the two go hand in hand) or you have to Reinstall the whole OS which will always update you to the latest version of the OS (and in the case of Messages any updates it has had).

  • N8 Connectivity issues post Anna

I was wondering if anyone was having connectivity issues with your N8 after Anna has been installed. Ive dont the simple things with the settings in the search options.  I seem to still have issues getting a connection unless there is a 100% full signal.  Anything less, the phone just hangs.  Sometimes for 60-80 seconds before a webpage is loaded.  Is this a bug within Anna?
Thanks in advance for any help.  And Happy Holidays to everyone.

Have not tried with Direct Ethernet connection, but after restarting my iMac a couple times it strangely worked.  Updating software now, well still downloading @ this point.  Thought it was possibly the security type I was using, but I ended up back to WPA2 personal that I had originally started with. It was not even seeing my WiFi before, so I never even had a chance to enter a password.  Also using an older AirPort Extreme. May be time for some updated equipment, but at the same time it has made it this far.

  • IMac Memory Issues: "Your Mac OSX Startup Disk Has No More Space Available"

    Hi all,
I've done some extensive searching on my issue, and haven't been able to find a solid solution.  I was hoping that if I shared my specific problem, it might shed some light on what is going on.  My OS is current:  10.8.2  with plenty of HD space (over 250 GB) and 4 GB ram.
Over the past couple of days, my iMac has become very slow and laggy.  Most times I will eventually get the message:  "Your Mac OSX Startup Disk Has No More Space Available".  This is after it has been lagging for quite a while, sometimes several hours.
I will restart, things will be sufficiently fast for a few minutes, but once I start working in any application (including any browser, or adobe software) it starts to slow down until it is eventually to a crawl, with the spinny wheel showing up often, even when only one application is open at a time.  It doesn't take more than several minutes to start slowing down.  Even simple things like hovering over the dock start to really lag, or opening my applications folder or System Preferences can take upwards of 15-30 seconds, even several minutes sometimes.
Here's some steps I've taken so far:
    -  Checked the activity monitor and system memory seems fine.  No single app takes up more than 7% or so of memory at any given time.  1.65 GB active, 1.64 GB inactive, about 700 MB wired, free about 4 MB.  VM size is 247 GB, CPU also seems OK:  (%user around 10-20%, %System around 10%, Idle around 70-80%).  No single app seems to be taking up an excessive amount of Real Memory.
    -  Permissions repair (It found some things to fix, but never completely finished, seemed to freeze after several hours, tried it several times)
    -  Checked disk for repair (no problems found), did the S.M.A.R.T check and ran tests again using Onyx.
    -  Re-indexed Macintosh HD
    -  I saw a suggestion to reset the PRAM, so I did that.
I do have the system backed up via Time Machine.  Suggestions for further action are very much appreciated!

Ok, thanks.  Here's a screenshot from during when it was running to a near halt (took me a while even to take the screenshot):
Here's a second screenshot after restart.  All I did was open Chrome to post this:
At this exact moment I have about 500MB of memory free, but I have been watching it slowly count down starting from 2GB free when I first restarted.  So far it is running smoothly, but I am guessing that it will start to lag again once the free memory dials down.
In case there is any correlation:  I happened to have a strange issue with my internet connection.  My router seems to be working fine, and I have wi-fi connected around the house.  However, I did have my iMac connected via ethernet cable, and the wired connection was not working (was not finding a DNS address), but when I go to Wi-fi, it works.  Again, could be totally unrelated, but it started just before the slowdown.

  • Built in Airport Extreme location:  Where is it?  Connection issues

I have an iMac G5, the one prior to the iSight release with the built in Airport Extreme. I am having wireless connection issues where I either have an incredibly low signal or no connection at all. I also have an ibook G4 that has full signal strength when placed next to the imac. I have been told the antenna may be loose on the Airport card but alas when I opened the computer, there was no Airport Card to be found. I was e-mailed a diagram of the location of the Airport card and realized it was for the prior version of the imac that came with the Airport as an option. i was informed Airport is "built in". So does this mean there is no antenna that could inadvertently be knocked out? I scoured this forum for solutions and found a handful of people with identical issues but no solution. Just wondering if anyone has an answer to this problem as I am starting to lose hope. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Warren, you have what is referred to as Rev B or ALS (Ambient Light Sensor) Imac and yes the Airport Extreme is integrated on the system board and there is no antenna connection like on the Rev. A Imac. One of the first things to check is in System Preferences => Network => Network Port Configurations make sure Airport is at the top of the list, if not then drag it to the top. Another thing people have found out is Bluetooth devices can cause interferance, I can't comment with this as I don't have any Bluetooth but if you do you could try a wired keyboard and mouse and turn off Bluetooth in System Preferences to see if it changes. Good luck and post back with results, Bob :~))
