Always on top - Linux and Mac

Hi I'd like to know if there is some way to set a JFrame "always on top" in Unix. I've found libraries that do this on Windows. Can this be done on a Mac? If so please tell me how or even better if you have the code for it, please post.

For one, I want something that is basically a play count, but for the whole album.
I think for this one, Apple would have to add more properties to the Album besides just a rating. I suppose the best thing to do here is to submit your feedback to Apple.
http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html
Secondly, I'd like to be able to use the smart playlist options to create a playlist that excludes/includes all songs from an album that is/isn't on another playlist.
If I understand you correctly, you can already do that. Just add the criteria "Playlist is not Favorites".
Thirdly, and this is both an iPod than iTunes thing, when I browse by artist in the iPod music, all the albums are sorted alphabetically. I'd like to have them sorted by date/year [...]
Sorry, I don't have any ideas on how you might do that.

  • Web Start doesn't leave the gate on Linux and Mac

    I am evaluating Java Web Start to decide whether to recommend it as part of a government grant proposal. My initial impression of Web Start has been a sorry one. When I go to
    http://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart/demos.html
    and click on one of the demos, I am redirected to the page
    http://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart/needdownload.html
    which tells me that I need to download Java Web Start ("a one-time process"). Fine, I click on the download link, and instead of a download, what I get is a bug-report page:
    http://java.sun.com/webapps/bugreport
    I have seen this behavior on both Linux and Mac OS X. (My Windows machine already had Web Start installed from several months ago; I don't know if this reflects a superior Windows support relative to Linux or Mac OS X support, or a better download software several months ago.)
    This is a terrible first impression for one's software. Given these beginnings, any sane developer would run away as fast as possible from the Web Start technology. Clearly a lot of work has gone into Web Start, and to see squandered like this is surprising.
    Our software's user base (research biologists) has large Macintosh and Linux constituencies. My experience with Web Start suggests that Web Start would be a disastrous choice for us. I hope there is a simple way around these obstacles.
    Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    I haven't tested JWS before JRE 1.4 so I can't recommend you anything if you require JRE 1.3 or before, but if you can install JRE 1.4, specially JRE 1.4.2 or after, JWS works very good on Linux and Windows. In both platforms I use deploy applications using JWS and they all work very good. I have no experience on Mac OS X.
    Both platforms obviously require Java preinstalled. Also there is some ways to install Java automatically, this is something that must be done by an administrator as every other software that requieres installation and configuration on every PC. After that step, everything is very simple.
    On Linux if you click on a .jnlp file for the first time, at least mozilla ask if you want to save the file or open it, you can select the javaws executable inside your java installation as the program to open this file, mark that that's the action you always want to do with that kind of files, and that's all. Also you can manually register .jnlp files and application/x-java-jnlp-file mime tipe as handled by javaws as the last part of the java installation and this first step will not be necesary.
    On Windows the installer automatically register itself as insterested in handling jnlp files, so the previous step for linux is not required.
    Hope this helps.

  • Native Process Concerns on Linux and MAC

    I  have created an AIR application that has a feature to take screenshot  of the screen. I have used "senthil.jar" to support screenshot capture.

    Native Process is created and used. I have also created native installers like -
    exe for windows
    dmg for MAC
    rpm for linux
    on  windows everything works fine.But on linux and MAC one NativeProcess  event is dispatched i.e. Event.ACTIVITY. No other event is dispatched.

  • Lenovo Wireless Headset W770 compatibility with Linux and Mac

    Hi,
    Can someone provide me information on Lenovo Wireless Headset W770 compatibility with Linux and Mac distributions.  On the product overview page under Software Requirements, only Windows is mentioned.  http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?submit=true&componentID=1343112653906&DocID=PD...
    Please let me know if the headset can work with other distributions as well.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    I just received W770 and tried it on a PC and it worked. But when I plug the USB receiver in a macbook air (2011 MAC OS 10.6.8), it didn't work. The message I got is that MAC can't recognize the "keyboard" and asked me to press the shift button on the unrecognized keyboard- which I guess meant that the MAC treated the USB dongle as if it were a wireless keyboard of some sort. Anyway, would appreciate it if you could let me know how to make it work on MAC. The previous statement saying that it would work on any Lenovo machine regardless of OS is kinda of unclear - do you mean that it would also work on lenovo running MAC OS (is there any Lenovo running Mac OS?). Thanks.

    I can say with a high degree of certaintly that the answer is probably. Thats about 90% probably, which is a lot better than you will get with anything else. You may need to be careful of fonts and such, but GFI

  • Desk top mail and .Mac Mail

    I am using my desk top mail and my .Mac mail, when my .Mac Mail syncs it updates my .Mac desk top G4 and my .Mac power book lap top but it does not sync my mail account. Should Mail be automatically updated when I sync the .Mac address or do I have to updated Mail independently.
    Hope that makes sense
    Thanks
    Mike

    Hello Mike.
    A .Mac type account is really an IMAP type account and behaves in the same way.
    If you are accessing your .Mac account as a .Mac type account with the Mail.app on both Macs, messages in the account's Inbox mailbox on the server are kept synchronized with the account's Inbox mailbox with the Mail.app on both Macs automatically.
    With the Mail.app on both Macs, you can also store Drafts, Sent, Trash and Junk messages on the server and after doing so, these mailboxes/messages will also be kept synchronized with the server with the Mail.app on both Macs automatically.
    With the Mail.app on either Mac, if you move messages from the account's Inbox mailbox to a user created "On My Mac" location mailbox which is stored locally on the hard drive, this process saves the transferred messages locally on the hard drive and removes the messages from the server at the same time. Messages removed from a server stored mailbox to a locally stored mailbox will no longer be kept synchronized with the Mail.app on another Mac since the messages are no longer located in a server stored mailbox.

  • Anyway to dual boot either Linux and Mac OS X?

    Is there a way to dual boot Ubuntu and Mac OS X similar to Boot Camp?

    Here's where you start.
    As an alternative you can purchase either Parallels Desktop for Mac or VM Fusion which provide virtual machines in which you can run various operating systems concurrently with OS X. Both products run various versions of Windows, Linux, and Unix.

  • Networking Widnows 2000/XP, Mandrica/Slackware Linux and Mac OS 8

    Hello. I have a mixed local network at home I have 2 PC's using windows xp, and I have another running linux. I have no problem with those pcs accessing a network or getting an internet connection. My problem is I recently got an older mac because im interested in getting into the mac world. At anyrate i don't understand quite yet how macs work. I setup mac os 8 on a Preforma 6300CD PowerPC. I can't get an internet connection. OS 8 at least the install cd I have comes with netscape 3.01 I think. Do I have an old browser or is it something else? Im not entirely sure, but I dont think Im getting an IP address. I do have a dhcp server router. made bny linsys. This may be a stupid question, but are macs compatible with this hardware? Do I need to get something else to replace this that would also allow my other pcs on the net? I read on google on something called IpNetRouter. Apparently this as a software nat that would allow my mac to connect using MACIP. I have not installed this software yet, but would that solve the problem? I am a computer consultant, and PC Technician, and I can't figure this out I am not a mac user, but I have high rated skills, and I feel like a retard at his first day of school. Anyhow input you could give me I would just have fun with it! Thanks
    Power PC Preforma 6300 CD Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier

    That router should work fine with a Mac. The router does not care what is connected.
    Start with Apple menu > Control Panels > TCP/IP Control Panel. Set it for Connect via Ethernet and using DHCP. You Must have a working connection on a 6300 (like a Hub, Switch, or Router port) at startup, or you will not be able to select Ethernet in that Control panel.
    While it is open, choose user_mode from the menu and set the Advanced Option. Then you get an additional options button, choose "Open Transport Always Resident". Close the windows and choose to save the changes.
    Open the TCP/IP Control panel again. Got a valid Ethernet address? If it is 169.254.xxx.yyy, you are talking only to yourself. Check cables and connections. Got a light on the adapter card?

  • Sending email using system default mail client on linux and Mac

    Want to send e-mail using defalut mail client of Linux, Mac OSX, others.

    Your question may be about mail, and your question may be about Java,
    but the JavaMail library can't do what you're asking.
    I know of no platform-independent way to do what you're asking.
    You can write lots of platform-dependent code - to do it with Outlook
    on Windows, to do it with AppleMail on MacOS, to do it with Thunderbird
    on Linux - but I know of no way to do it with whatever mail client the
    user has configured on any system.
    Sorry.

  • What are analogous shared libraries that can be called using a call library function to user32.dll and lvtoolbox.dll when using Linux and Mac?

    I am wondering if anyone is familiar with how to get similar information with a LV program using a Linux shared library as well as the corrolate Mac library to the Windows user32.dll and lvtoolbox.dll.  I specifically am trying to get system metrics such as screen resolution information and cursor information as well as being able to set mouse position.   I am trying to convert a LV Windows program to these other operating systems and I am unfamiliar with these platforms.
    Thanks for your time - I really appreciate it.

    There is no simple answer to that. On Linux you will likely have to call into X Server, which would be a pain to do, due to various versions and implementations of that. On the Mac there would be the difficulty that you can't call into the native ObjectiveC API but would need to find a Carbon API or something like that to do what you want.
    If you seriously want to do something like this for multiplatform, you should bite the bullet and start coding an intermediate shared library in C. This library would export a LabVIEW friendly C API and access whatever system API you need to have for the particular functions. But multiplatform programming on this level is a pain in the ass, no matter what.

  • JPEG image fails to save on Linux and Mac

    Gentlemen,
    The following code extract works fine on windowsXP platform but fails for Linux with a java.lang.ClassCastException and gives a black picture as output on Mac OSX.
    Any ideas why?
    On Linux, I'm using Blackdown 1.4.2
      public void save_Image(String file) {
        try {
          if(file.toLowerCase().indexOf(".jpg")==-1 && file.toLowerCase().indexOf(".jpeg")==-1) file+=".jpg";
          FileOutputStream out = new FileOutputStream(file);
          BufferedImage image = (BufferedImage)createImage(getWidth(), getHeight());
          Graphics g = image.getGraphics();
          paint(g);
          JPEGImageEncoder encoder = JPEGCodec.createJPEGEncoder(out);
          JPEGEncodeParam jep = encoder.getDefaultJPEGEncodeParam(image);
          jep.setQuality(1.0f, false);
          encoder.setJPEGEncodeParam(jep);
          encoder.encode(image);
          g.dispose();
          out.close();
        }catch(FileNotFoundException fnfe) {
          System.err.println("File not found: " + file);
        }catch(IOException ioe){ System.err.println("Could not write file: " + file); }
      }The complete program can be found on http://impact.sf.net

    Hi,
    I copied the too lines but it gives me the same result as before.
    <% String resourcePath = request.getContextPath(); %>
    <.img height="21" width="39" src="<%=resourcePath%>/images/button_edit.gif"/>
    I dragged and dropped the image to my jsp to make sure I didn't make any syntax errors, but it looks similar ti the above and both give the same annoying error.
    <.img height="21" width="39" src="../../images/button_edit.gif"/>
    Any ideas?
    TIA
    p.s. I added the dot after the < character in this post so that the forum program won't treat the statement as html tag.

  • USB drive: what format for Linux and Mac?

    I'm wondering what's the best format for an external USB harddrive to be used both on Macs (Tiger and Leopard) and Linux . I'm familiar with Linux, but not much with Mac.
    I'd like to avoid vfat (the MS-DOS format) because symbolic links aren't allowed there.
    Regards,
    Ryo

    Following up my own question, I've formatted the USB drive in hfsplus and it works both on Macs and on my Linux box (Debian testing).
    One issue is that I had to turn off the journaling of the hfsplus filesystem, because (it seems) the Linux hfsplus driver doesn't support writing to the journaled hfsplus filesystem. The earliest discussion I found was from 2005 or 2006, and it's strange that the journaling support has still not been incorporated into the mainstream Linux kernels.
    Without journaling, I have to be extra careful when I remove the drive. This minor annoyance aside, it works.
    But, I'm still open to suggestions. For example, what's the situation of Mac OS X in supporting ext3 or reiserfs?
    Cheers,
    Ryo

  • School deployment with Windows, Linux and Mac Os

    Hi,
    we have a project with a school where they want to make a classroom with 20 imacs. The imacs will have 3 systems (Mac, Win and Linux) at the same time.
    They want the possibility to make something like the pc does with Rembo: When they need to format and reinstall the 20 imacs, do it over the network from a server.
    Is it possible on iMacs?
    Thank you very much for your help.

    I have no idea if Dell = best of PC (use to be IBM, DEC, HP, Compaq) but I hand build my own. And a Mac is never as good at Windows and has a number of shortcoming when it coems to running Windows natively.
    So I have to ask. Sometimes general purpose is the best of none and all the headaches.
    Paragon has tools to deploy and move OS from virtual to physical and back, and between hardware. There are enterprise editions and tools. Ideally you just boot off a server and get your own profile and image no matter where you are.
    OS X Server can run OS X Clients off VMs. And yes it would be nice to support any microcomputer or workstation or whatever. I am not the type to go for all in one anything iMac-ish. Give me a hard drive for each and don't try to mix Grub, MBR, GPT, NTFS along with HFS and EXT3.
    You do know that you are VERY limited in and pushing what falls in "supported" and what partition table will handle this, as well as keeping Windows booting on Mac.
    Boot Camp Assistant is not designed for such chores.

  • LINUX AND MAC....

    I WILL LIKE TO KNOW IF MY IBOOK G4 IS LINUX FRIENDLY?

    Hi LightBearer, you say that there aren't many things to do with an offline Mac. Although you will learn many new possibilities as you progress with the Mac, what I find amazing with OS X is the amount of things you can do when you are online. Plus, as long as you apply security updates (most recent being 2005-009), and that you practice "safe browsing" (which is, as of now, if not the only, at least the most effective way to stay protected from threats such as phishing), you do not have to fear malware like under Windows. There are no known viruses targeting Mac OS X out in the wild, as well as no spyware or similar software
    By the way, there are a lot of epople who will tell you that it is preferable not to run antivirus software on the Mac, and others who will say that you should. I prefer to say nothing about this and let you take your own decision. However, if you decide to run antivirus software on your Mac, or even use system utilities, stay away from Norton products, they are the best software when it comes to destroying a Mac. I've never used any but many people who did use their Mac products had to post on these boards to repair whatever Norton did to their system.
    If you want good system utilities, there are two main utilities that are often recommended, TechTool Pro and DiskWarrior. They're both pretty expensive, and even though Dsik Warrior is usually more successful than TechTool when it comes to damaged filesystems and similar stuff, it focuses on the software side of things, which makes TechTool Pro, that also focuses on the hardware, a must have app too.
    When it comes to Open Souce software, there are many available for the Mac, but here are my two favorites :
    NeoOffice/J (Mac OS X native version of OpenOffice.org)
    and
    Camino (web browser using the Gecko rendering engine - like Mozilla FireFox, which is also available for the Mac).
